Isaiah Sent to King Ahaz

In the days of (A)Ahaz the son of Jotham, son of Uzziah, king of Judah, (B)Rezin the king of Syria and (C)Pekah the son of Remaliah the king of Israel came up to Jerusalem to wage war against it, but could not yet mount an attack against it. When the house of David was told, (D)“Syria is in league with[a] (E)Ephraim,” the heart of Ahaz[b] and the heart of his people shook as the trees of the forest shake before the wind.

And the Lord said to Isaiah, “Go out to meet Ahaz, you and (F)Shear-jashub[c] your son, at the end of (G)the conduit of the upper pool on the highway to the Washer's Field. And say to him, (H)‘Be careful, (I)be quiet, do not fear, and do not let your heart be faint because of these two (J)smoldering stumps of firebrands, at the fierce anger of Rezin and Syria and (K)the son of Remaliah. Because Syria, with Ephraim and (L)the son of Remaliah, has devised evil against you, saying, “Let us go up against Judah and terrify it, and let us conquer it[d] for ourselves, and set up the son of Tabeel as king in the midst of it,” thus says the Lord God:

(M)“‘It shall not stand,
    and it shall not come to pass.
For the head of Syria is (N)Damascus,
    and the head of Damascus is Rezin.
And within sixty-five years
    Ephraim will be shattered from being a people.
And the head of Ephraim is Samaria,
    and the head of Samaria is (O)the son of Remaliah.
(P)If you[e] are not firm in faith,
    you will not be firm at all.’”

The Sign of Immanuel

10 Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz: 11 “Ask (Q)a sign of the Lord your[f] God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven.” 12 But Ahaz said, “I will not ask, and I will not put the Lord to the test.” 13 And he[g] said, “Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary men, that you (R)weary my God also? 14 Therefore the (S)Lord himself will give you a sign. (T)Behold, the (U)virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name (V)Immanuel.[h] 15 He shall eat (W)curds and honey when he knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good. 16 (X)For before the boy knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good, the land whose two kings you dread will be (Y)deserted. 17 (Z)The Lord will bring upon you and upon your people and upon your father's house such days as have not come since the day that (AA)Ephraim departed from Judah—the king of Assyria!”

18 In that day the Lord will (AB)whistle for the fly that is at the end of the streams of Egypt, and for the bee that is in the land of Assyria. 19 And they will all come and settle in the steep ravines, and (AC)in the clefts of the rocks, and on all the thornbushes, and on all the pastures.[i]

20 In that day (AD)the Lord will (AE)shave with a razor that is (AF)hired beyond (AG)the River[j]—with the king of Assyria—the head and the hair of the feet, and it will sweep away the beard also.

21 (AH)In that day a man will keep alive a young cow and two sheep, 22 and because of the abundance of milk that they give, he will eat curds, for everyone who is left in the land will eat (AI)curds and honey.

23 In that day every place where there used to be a thousand vines, worth a thousand shekels[k] of silver, will become (AJ)briers and thorns. 24 (AK)With bow and arrows a man will come there, for all the land will be briers and thorns. 25 (AL)And as for all the hills that used to be hoed with a hoe, you will not come there for fear (AM)of briers and thorns, but they will become a place where cattle are let loose and where sheep tread.

The Sign of Immanuel

When Ahaz(A) son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, was king of Judah, King Rezin(B) of Aram(C) and Pekah(D) son of Remaliah(E) king of Israel marched up to fight against Jerusalem, but they could not overpower it.

Now the house of David(F) was told, “Aram has allied itself with[a] Ephraim(G)”; so the hearts of Ahaz and his people were shaken,(H) as the trees of the forest are shaken by the wind.

Then the Lord said to Isaiah, “Go out, you and your son Shear-Jashub,[b](I) to meet Ahaz at the end of the aqueduct of the Upper Pool, on the road to the Launderer’s Field.(J) Say to him, ‘Be careful, keep calm(K) and don’t be afraid.(L) Do not lose heart(M) because of these two smoldering stubs(N) of firewood—because of the fierce anger(O) of Rezin and Aram and of the son of Remaliah.(P) Aram, Ephraim and Remaliah’s(Q) son have plotted(R) your ruin, saying, “Let us invade Judah; let us tear it apart and divide it among ourselves, and make the son of Tabeel king over it.” Yet this is what the Sovereign Lord says:(S)

“‘It will not take place,
    it will not happen,(T)
for the head of Aram is Damascus,(U)
    and the head of Damascus is only Rezin.(V)
Within sixty-five years
    Ephraim will be too shattered(W) to be a people.
The head of Ephraim is Samaria,(X)
    and the head of Samaria is only Remaliah’s son.
If you do not stand(Y) firm in your faith,(Z)
    you will not stand at all.’”(AA)

10 Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz, 11 “Ask the Lord your God for a sign,(AB) whether in the deepest depths or in the highest heights.(AC)

12 But Ahaz said, “I will not ask; I will not put the Lord to the test.(AD)

13 Then Isaiah said, “Hear now, you house of David!(AE) Is it not enough(AF) to try the patience of humans? Will you try the patience(AG) of my God(AH) also? 14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you[c] a sign:(AI) The virgin[d](AJ) will conceive and give birth to a son,(AK) and[e] will call him Immanuel.[f](AL) 15 He will be eating curds(AM) and honey(AN) when he knows enough to reject the wrong and choose the right, 16 for before the boy knows(AO) enough to reject the wrong and choose the right,(AP) the land of the two kings you dread will be laid waste.(AQ) 17 The Lord will bring on you and on your people and on the house of your father a time unlike any since Ephraim broke away(AR) from Judah—he will bring the king of Assyria.(AS)

Assyria, the Lord’s Instrument

18 In that day(AT) the Lord will whistle(AU) for flies from the Nile delta in Egypt and for bees from the land of Assyria.(AV) 19 They will all come and settle in the steep ravines and in the crevices(AW) in the rocks, on all the thornbushes(AX) and at all the water holes. 20 In that day(AY) the Lord will use(AZ) a razor hired from beyond the Euphrates River(BA)—the king of Assyria(BB)—to shave your head and private parts, and to cut off your beard(BC) also.(BD) 21 In that day,(BE) a person will keep alive a young cow and two goats.(BF) 22 And because of the abundance of the milk they give, there will be curds to eat. All who remain in the land will eat curds(BG) and honey.(BH) 23 In that day,(BI) in every place where there were a thousand vines worth a thousand silver shekels,[g](BJ) there will be only briers and thorns.(BK) 24 Hunters will go there with bow and arrow, for the land will be covered with briers(BL) and thorns. 25 As for all the hills(BM) once cultivated by the hoe, you will no longer go there for fear of the briers and thorns;(BN) they will become places where cattle are turned loose and where sheep run.(BO)

10 Woe to those who (A)decree iniquitous decrees,
    and the writers who (B)keep writing oppression,
to turn aside the needy from justice
    and (C)to rob the poor of my people of their right,
that widows may be their spoil,
    and that they may make the fatherless their prey!
What will you do on (D)the day of punishment,
    in the ruin that will come (E)from afar?
To whom will you flee for help,
    and where will you leave your wealth?
Nothing remains but to crouch among the prisoners
    or fall among the slain.
(F)For all this his anger has not turned away,
    and his hand is stretched out still.

Judgment on Arrogant Assyria

Woe to Assyria, (G)the rod of my anger;
    the staff in their hands is my fury!
Against a (H)godless nation I send him,
    and against the people of my wrath I command him,
to take (I)spoil and seize plunder,
    and to (J)tread them down like the mire of the streets.
But he (K)does not so intend,
    and his heart does not so think;
but it is in his heart to destroy,
    and to cut off nations not a few;
for he says:
(L)“Are not my commanders all kings?
(M)Is not (N)Calno like (O)Carchemish?
    Is not (P)Hamath like (Q)Arpad?
    (R)Is not (S)Samaria like Damascus?
10 As my hand has reached to (T)the kingdoms of the idols,
    whose carved images were greater than those of Jerusalem and Samaria,
11 shall I not do to Jerusalem and (U)her idols
    (V)as I have done to Samaria and her images?”

12 (W)When the Lord has finished all his work on Mount Zion and on Jerusalem, (X)he[a] will punish the speech[b] of the arrogant heart of the king of Assyria and the boastful look in his eyes. 13 (Y)For he says:

“By the strength of my hand I have done it,
    and by my wisdom, for I have understanding;
I remove the boundaries of peoples,
    and plunder their treasures;
    like a bull I bring down those who sit on thrones.
14 My hand has found like a nest
    the wealth of the peoples;
and as one gathers eggs that have been forsaken,
    so I have gathered all the earth;
and there was none that moved a wing
    or opened the mouth or chirped.”

15 Shall (Z)the axe boast over him who hews with it,
    or the saw magnify itself against him who wields it?
As if a rod should wield him who lifts it,
    or as if a staff should lift him who is not wood!
16 Therefore the Lord God of hosts
    will send wasting sickness among his (AA)stout warriors,
and under his glory (AB)a burning will be kindled,
    like the burning of fire.
17 (AC)The light of Israel will become a fire,
    and (AD)his Holy One a flame,
and (AE)it will burn and devour
    his thorns and briers (AF)in one day.
18 The glory of (AG)his forest and of his (AH)fruitful land
    the Lord will destroy, both soul and body,
    and it will be as when a sick man wastes away.
19 The remnant of the trees of his forest will be so few
    that a child can write them down.

The Remnant of Israel Will Return

20 (AI)In that day (AJ)the remnant of Israel and the survivors of the house of Jacob will no more (AK)lean on him who struck them, but (AL)will lean on the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, in truth. 21 A remnant will return, the remnant of Jacob, (AM)to the mighty God. 22 (AN)For though your people Israel be as the sand of the sea, (AO)only a remnant of them will return. (AP)Destruction is decreed, overflowing with righteousness. 23 For the Lord God of hosts will make a full end, as decreed, in the midst of all the earth.

24 Therefore thus says the Lord God of hosts: “O my people, (AQ)who dwell in Zion, (AR)be not afraid of the Assyrians when they strike with the rod and lift up their staff against you as (AS)the Egyptians did. 25 For (AT)in a very little while my fury will come to an end, and my anger will be directed to their destruction. 26 And (AU)the Lord of hosts will wield against them a whip, as when he struck (AV)Midian (AW)at the rock of Oreb. And his staff will be over the sea, and he will lift it (AX)as he did in Egypt. 27 And in that day (AY)his burden will depart from your shoulder, and (AZ)his yoke from your neck; and the yoke will be broken because of the fat.”[c]

28 He has come to Aiath;
he has passed through (BA)Migron;
    at Michmash he stores (BB)his baggage;
29 they have crossed over (BC)the pass;
    at (BD)Geba they lodge for the night;
(BE)Ramah trembles;
    (BF)Gibeah of Saul has fled.
30 Cry aloud, O daughter of (BG)Gallim!
    Give attention, O Laishah!
    O poor (BH)Anathoth!
31 Madmenah is in flight;
    the inhabitants of Gebim flee for safety.
32 This very day he will halt at (BI)Nob;
    he will shake his fist
    at the mount of (BJ)the daughter of Zion,
    the hill of Jerusalem.

33 Behold, the Lord God of hosts
    (BK)will lop (BL)the boughs with terrifying power;
the great in height will be hewn down,
    and the lofty will be brought low.
34 He will cut down (BM)the thickets of the forest with an axe,
    and (BN)Lebanon will fall by the Majestic One.

The Righteous Reign of the Branch

11 There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of (BO)Jesse,
    and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit.
And (BP)the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him,
    the Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
    the Spirit of counsel and might,
    the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.
And his delight shall be in the fear of the Lord.
(BQ)He shall not judge by (BR)what his eyes see,
    or decide disputes by (BS)what his ears hear,
but (BT)with righteousness he shall judge the poor,
    and decide with equity for the meek of the earth;
and he shall (BU)strike the earth with the rod of his mouth,
    and (BV)with the breath of his lips (BW)he shall kill the wicked.
Righteousness shall be the belt of his waist,
    and (BX)faithfulness the belt of his loins.

(BY)The wolf shall dwell with the lamb,
    and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat,
and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together;
    and a little child shall lead them.
The cow and the bear shall graze;
    their young shall lie down together;
    and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.
The nursing child shall play over the hole of the cobra,
    and the weaned child shall put his hand on the adder's den.
(BZ)They shall not hurt or destroy
    in all (CA)my holy mountain;
(CB)for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord
    as the waters cover the sea.

10 In that day (CC)the root of (CD)Jesse, who shall stand as (CE)a signal for the peoples—of him shall the nations inquire, and his resting place shall be glorious.

11 (CF)In that day the Lord will extend his hand yet a second time to recover the remnant that remains of his people, (CG)from Assyria, (CH)from Egypt, from (CI)Pathros, from (CJ)Cush,[d] from (CK)Elam, from (CL)Shinar, from (CM)Hamath, and from (CN)the coastlands of the sea.

12 He will raise (CO)a signal for the nations
    and will assemble (CP)the banished of Israel,
and gather the dispersed of Judah
    from the four corners of the earth.
13 (CQ)The jealousy of Ephraim shall depart,
    and those who harass Judah shall be cut off;
Ephraim shall not be jealous of Judah,
    and Judah shall not harass Ephraim.
14 (CR)But they shall swoop down on the shoulder of the Philistines in the west,
    and together they shall plunder (CS)the people of the east.
They shall put out their hand (CT)against (CU)Edom and (CV)Moab,
    and (CW)the Ammonites shall obey them.
15 And the Lord will utterly destroy[e]
    (CX)the tongue of the Sea of Egypt,
and will wave his hand over (CY)the River[f]
    with his scorching breath,[g]
and strike it into seven channels,
    and he will lead people across in sandals.
16 And there will be (CZ)a highway from Assyria
    for the remnant that remains of his people,
(DA)as there was for Israel
    when they came up from the land of Egypt.

The Lord Is My Strength and My Song

12 You[h] will say (DB)in that day:
“I will give thanks to you, O Lord,
    for though you were angry with me,
(DC)your anger turned away,
    that you might comfort me.

“Behold, God is my salvation;
    I will trust, and will not be afraid;
for (DD)the Lord God[i] is my strength and my song,
    and he has become my salvation.”

(DE)With joy you[j] will draw water from the wells of salvation. (DF)And you will say in that day:

(DG)“Give thanks to the Lord,
    call upon his name,
(DH)make known his deeds among the peoples,
    proclaim (DI)that his name is exalted.

(DJ)“Sing praises to the Lord, for he has done gloriously;
    let this be made known[k] in all the earth.
Shout, and sing for joy, O inhabitant of Zion,
    for great (DK)in your[l] midst is (DL)the Holy One of Israel.”

The Judgment of Babylon

13 The oracle concerning (DM)Babylon which (DN)Isaiah the son of Amoz saw.

On a bare hill (DO)raise a signal;
    cry aloud to them;
wave the hand for (DP)them to enter
    the gates of the nobles.
I myself have commanded my consecrated ones,
    and have summoned my mighty men to execute my anger,
    my proudly exulting ones.[m]

The sound (DQ)of a tumult is on the mountains
    as of a great multitude!
The sound of an uproar of kingdoms,
    of nations gathering together!
(DR)The Lord of hosts is mustering
    a host for battle.
(DS)They come from a distant land,
    from the end of the heavens,
the Lord and the weapons of his indignation,
    to destroy the whole land.[n]

(DT)Wail, for (DU)the day of the Lord is near;
    as destruction from the Almighty[o] it will come!
Therefore all hands will be feeble,
    and every human heart (DV)will melt.
They will be dismayed:
    (DW)pangs and agony will seize them;
    (DX)they will be in anguish like a woman in labor.
They will look aghast at one another;
    their faces will be aflame.

Behold, (DY)the day of the Lord comes,
    cruel, with wrath and fierce anger,
to make the land a desolation
    and (DZ)to destroy its sinners from it.
10 (EA)For the stars of the heavens and their constellations
    will not give their light;
(EB)the sun will be dark at its rising,
    and the moon will not shed its light.
11 I will punish (EC)the world for its evil,
    and the wicked for their iniquity;
I will (ED)put an end to the pomp of the arrogant,
    (EE)and lay low the pompous pride of the ruthless.
12 I will make (EF)people more rare than fine gold,
    and mankind than the (EG)gold of Ophir.
13 Therefore (EH)I will make the heavens tremble,
    and the earth will be shaken out of its place,
at the wrath of the Lord of hosts
    in the day of his fierce anger.
14 And like a hunted gazelle,
    or like sheep with none to gather them,
(EI)each will turn to his own people,
    and each will flee to his own land.
15 Whoever is found will be thrust through,
    and whoever is caught will fall by the sword.
16 (EJ)Their infants will be dashed in pieces
    before their eyes;
their houses will be plundered
    and their wives ravished.

17 Behold, (EK)I am stirring up the Medes against them,
    who have no regard for silver
    and do not delight in gold.
18 (EL)Their bows will slaughter[p] the young men;
    they will have no mercy on the fruit of the womb;
    their eyes will not pity children.
19 And Babylon, (EM)the glory of kingdoms,
    the splendor and pomp of the Chaldeans,
will be (EN)like Sodom and Gomorrah
    when God overthrew them.
20 (EO)It will never be inhabited
    or lived in for all generations;
no (EP)Arab will pitch his tent there;
    no (EQ)shepherds will make their flocks lie down there.
21 But (ER)wild animals will lie down there,
    and their houses will be full of howling creatures;
there (ES)ostriches[q] will dwell,
    and there wild goats will dance.
22 Hyenas[r] will cry in its towers,
    and (ET)jackals in (EU)the pleasant palaces;
its time is close at hand
    and its days will not be prolonged.

The Restoration of Jacob

14 (EV)For the Lord will have compassion on Jacob and will again choose Israel, and (EW)will set them in their own land, and (EX)sojourners will join them and will attach themselves to the house of Jacob. And (EY)the peoples will take them and bring them to their place, and the house of Israel will possess them in the Lord's land (EZ)as male and female slaves.[s] (FA)They will take captive those who were their captors, (FB)and rule over those who oppressed them.

Israel's Remnant Taunts Babylon

When the Lord has given you rest from your pain and turmoil and the hard service with which you were made to serve, you will take up this (FC)taunt against the king of Babylon:

“How the oppressor has ceased,
    (FD)the insolent fury[t] ceased!
The Lord has broken the (FE)staff of the wicked,
    the (FF)scepter of rulers,
(FG)that struck the peoples in wrath
    with unceasing blows,
that ruled the nations in anger
    with unrelenting persecution.
The whole earth is at rest and quiet;
    (FH)they break forth into singing.
(FI)(FJ)The cypresses rejoice at you,
    (FK)the cedars of Lebanon, saying,
‘Since you were laid low,
    no woodcutter comes up against us.’
Sheol beneath is stirred up
    to meet you when you come;
it rouses the shades to greet you,
    all who were leaders of the earth;
it raises from their thrones
    all who were kings of the nations.
10 (FL)All of them will answer
    and say to you:
‘You too have become as weak as we!
    You have become like us!’
11 Your pomp is brought down to Sheol,
    the sound of your harps;
maggots are laid as a bed beneath you,
    and worms are your covers.

12 “How (FM)you are fallen from heaven,
    O Day Star, (FN)son of Dawn!
How you are cut down to the ground,
    you who laid the nations low!
13 You said in your heart,
    (FO)‘I will ascend to heaven;
above the stars of God
    (FP)I will set my throne on high;
I will sit on the mount of assembly
    in the far reaches of the north;[u]
14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds;
    I will make myself like the Most High.’
15 (FQ)But you are brought down to Sheol,
    to the far reaches of the pit.
16 Those who see you will stare at you
    and ponder over you:
‘Is this (FR)the man who made the earth tremble,
    who shook kingdoms,
17 who made the world like a desert
    and overthrew its cities,
    (FS)who did not let his prisoners go home?’
18 All the kings of the nations lie in glory,
    each in his own tomb;[v]
19 but you are cast out, away from your grave,
    like a loathed branch,
(FT)clothed with the slain, those pierced by the sword,
    who go down to the stones of the pit,
    like a dead body trampled underfoot.
20 You will not be joined with them in burial,
    because you have destroyed your land,
    you have slain your people.

“May (FU)the offspring of evildoers
    nevermore be named!
21 Prepare slaughter for his sons
    (FV)because of the guilt of their fathers,
lest they rise and possess the earth,
    and fill the face of the world with cities.”

22 “I will rise up against them,” declares the Lord of hosts, “and will cut off from Babylon name and (FW)remnant, (FX)descendants and posterity,” declares the Lord. 23 “And I will make it a possession of the (FY)hedgehog,[w] and pools of water, and I will sweep it with the broom of destruction,” declares the Lord of hosts.

An Oracle Concerning Assyria

24 The Lord of hosts has sworn:
(FZ)“As I have planned,
    so shall it be,
and as I have purposed,
    so shall it stand,
25 that (GA)I will break the Assyrian in my land,
    and on my mountains trample him underfoot;
and (GB)his yoke shall depart from them,
    and (GC)his burden from their shoulder.”

26 This is the purpose that is purposed
    concerning the whole earth,
and this is (GD)the hand that is stretched out
    over all the nations.
27 (GE)For the Lord of hosts has purposed,
    and who will annul it?
(GF)His hand is stretched out,
    and who will turn it back?

An Oracle Concerning Philistia

28 In the year that (GG)King Ahaz died came this (GH)oracle:

29 Rejoice not, (GI)O Philistia, all of you,
    that (GJ)the rod that struck you is broken,
for from the serpent's root will come forth an adder,
    and its fruit will be a (GK)flying fiery serpent.
30 And the firstborn of (GL)the poor will graze,
    and (GM)the needy lie down in safety;
but I will kill your root with famine,
    and your remnant it will slay.
31 (GN)Wail, O (GO)gate; cry out, O city;
    melt in fear, (GP)O Philistia, all of you!
(GQ)For smoke comes out of the north,
    and there is no straggler in his ranks.

32 What will one answer the messengers of the nation?
(GR)“The Lord has founded Zion,
    and in her the afflicted of his people find refuge.”

  23. Isaiah 14:23 Possibly porcupine, or owl

10 Woe(A) to those who make unjust laws,
    to those who issue oppressive decrees,(B)
to deprive(C) the poor of their rights
    and withhold justice from the oppressed of my people,(D)
making widows their prey
    and robbing the fatherless.(E)
What will you do on the day of reckoning,(F)
    when disaster(G) comes from afar?
To whom will you run for help?(H)
    Where will you leave your riches?
Nothing will remain but to cringe among the captives(I)
    or fall among the slain.(J)

Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away,(K)
    his hand is still upraised.

God’s Judgment on Assyria

“Woe(L) to the Assyrian,(M) the rod(N) of my anger,
    in whose hand is the club(O) of my wrath!(P)
I send him against a godless(Q) nation,
    I dispatch(R) him against a people who anger me,(S)
to seize loot and snatch plunder,(T)
    and to trample(U) them down like mud in the streets.
But this is not what he intends,(V)
    this is not what he has in mind;
his purpose is to destroy,
    to put an end to many nations.
‘Are not my commanders(W) all kings?’ he says.
    ‘Has not Kalno(X) fared like Carchemish?(Y)
Is not Hamath(Z) like Arpad,(AA)
    and Samaria(AB) like Damascus?(AC)
10 As my hand seized the kingdoms of the idols,(AD)
    kingdoms whose images excelled those of Jerusalem and Samaria—
11 shall I not deal with Jerusalem and her images
    as I dealt with Samaria and her idols?(AE)’”

12 When the Lord has finished all his work(AF) against Mount Zion(AG) and Jerusalem, he will say, “I will punish the king of Assyria(AH) for the willful pride(AI) of his heart and the haughty look(AJ) in his eyes. 13 For he says:

“‘By the strength of my hand(AK) I have done this,(AL)
    and by my wisdom, because I have understanding.
I removed the boundaries of nations,
    I plundered their treasures;(AM)
    like a mighty one I subdued[a] their kings.(AN)
14 As one reaches into a nest,(AO)
    so my hand reached for the wealth(AP) of the nations;
as people gather abandoned eggs,
    so I gathered all the countries;(AQ)
not one flapped a wing,
    or opened its mouth to chirp.(AR)’”

15 Does the ax raise itself above the person who swings it,
    or the saw boast against the one who uses it?(AS)
As if a rod were to wield the person who lifts it up,
    or a club(AT) brandish the one who is not wood!
16 Therefore, the Lord, the Lord Almighty,
    will send a wasting disease(AU) upon his sturdy warriors;(AV)
under his pomp(AW) a fire(AX) will be kindled
    like a blazing flame.
17 The Light of Israel will become a fire,(AY)
    their Holy One(AZ) a flame;
in a single day it will burn and consume
    his thorns(BA) and his briers.(BB)
18 The splendor of his forests(BC) and fertile fields
    it will completely destroy,(BD)
    as when a sick person wastes away.
19 And the remaining trees of his forests(BE) will be so few(BF)
    that a child could write them down.

The Remnant of Israel

20 In that day(BG) the remnant of Israel,
    the survivors(BH) of Jacob,
will no longer rely(BI) on him
    who struck them down(BJ)
but will truly rely(BK) on the Lord,
    the Holy One of Israel.(BL)
21 A remnant(BM) will return,[b](BN) a remnant of Jacob
    will return to the Mighty God.(BO)
22 Though your people be like the sand(BP) by the sea, Israel,
    only a remnant will return.(BQ)
Destruction has been decreed,(BR)
    overwhelming and righteous.
23 The Lord, the Lord Almighty, will carry out
    the destruction decreed(BS) upon the whole land.(BT)

24 Therefore this is what the Lord, the Lord Almighty, says:

“My people who live in Zion,(BU)
    do not be afraid(BV) of the Assyrians,
who beat(BW) you with a rod(BX)
    and lift up a club against you, as Egypt did.
25 Very soon(BY) my anger against you will end
    and my wrath(BZ) will be directed to their destruction.(CA)

26 The Lord Almighty will lash(CB) them with a whip,
    as when he struck down Midian(CC) at the rock of Oreb;
and he will raise his staff(CD) over the waters,(CE)
    as he did in Egypt.
27 In that day(CF) their burden(CG) will be lifted from your shoulders,
    their yoke(CH) from your neck;(CI)
the yoke(CJ) will be broken
    because you have grown so fat.[c]

28 They enter Aiath;
    they pass through Migron;(CK)
    they store supplies(CL) at Mikmash.(CM)
29 They go over the pass, and say,
    “We will camp overnight at Geba.(CN)
Ramah(CO) trembles;
    Gibeah(CP) of Saul flees.(CQ)
30 Cry out, Daughter Gallim!(CR)
    Listen, Laishah!
    Poor Anathoth!(CS)
31 Madmenah is in flight;
    the people of Gebim take cover.
32 This day they will halt at Nob;(CT)
    they will shake their fist(CU)
at the mount of Daughter Zion,(CV)
    at the hill of Jerusalem.

33 See, the Lord, the Lord Almighty,
    will lop off(CW) the boughs with great power.
The lofty trees will be felled,(CX)
    the tall(CY) ones will be brought low.(CZ)
34 He will cut down(DA) the forest thickets with an ax;
    Lebanon(DB) will fall before the Mighty One.(DC)

The Branch From Jesse

11 A shoot(DD) will come up from the stump(DE) of Jesse;(DF)
    from his roots a Branch(DG) will bear fruit.(DH)
The Spirit(DI) of the Lord will rest on him—
    the Spirit of wisdom(DJ) and of understanding,
    the Spirit of counsel and of might,(DK)
    the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord
and he will delight in the fear(DL) of the Lord.

He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes,(DM)
    or decide by what he hears with his ears;(DN)
but with righteousness(DO) he will judge the needy,(DP)
    with justice(DQ) he will give decisions for the poor(DR) of the earth.
He will strike(DS) the earth with the rod of his mouth;(DT)
    with the breath(DU) of his lips he will slay the wicked.(DV)
Righteousness will be his belt(DW)
    and faithfulness(DX) the sash around his waist.(DY)

The wolf will live with the lamb,(DZ)
    the leopard will lie down with the goat,
the calf and the lion and the yearling[d] together;
    and a little child will lead them.
The cow will feed with the bear,
    their young will lie down together,
    and the lion will eat straw like the ox.(EA)
The infant(EB) will play near the cobra’s den,
    and the young child will put its hand into the viper’s(EC) nest.
They will neither harm nor destroy(ED)
    on all my holy mountain,(EE)
for the earth(EF) will be filled with the knowledge(EG) of the Lord
    as the waters cover the sea.

10 In that day(EH) the Root of Jesse(EI) will stand as a banner(EJ) for the peoples; the nations(EK) will rally to him,(EL) and his resting place(EM) will be glorious.(EN) 11 In that day(EO) the Lord will reach out his hand a second time to reclaim the surviving remnant(EP) of his people from Assyria,(EQ) from Lower Egypt, from Upper Egypt,(ER) from Cush,[e](ES) from Elam,(ET) from Babylonia,[f] from Hamath(EU) and from the islands(EV) of the Mediterranean.(EW)

12 He will raise a banner(EX) for the nations
    and gather(EY) the exiles of Israel;(EZ)
he will assemble the scattered people(FA) of Judah
    from the four quarters of the earth.(FB)
13 Ephraim’s jealousy will vanish,
    and Judah’s enemies[g] will be destroyed;
Ephraim will not be jealous of Judah,
    nor Judah hostile toward Ephraim.(FC)
14 They will swoop down on the slopes of Philistia(FD) to the west;
    together they will plunder the people to the east.(FE)
They will subdue Edom(FF) and Moab,(FG)
    and the Ammonites(FH) will be subject to them.(FI)
15 The Lord will dry up(FJ)
    the gulf of the Egyptian sea;
with a scorching wind(FK) he will sweep his hand(FL)
    over the Euphrates River.(FM)
He will break it up into seven streams
    so that anyone can cross over in sandals.(FN)
16 There will be a highway(FO) for the remnant(FP) of his people
    that is left from Assyria,(FQ)
as there was for Israel
    when they came up from Egypt.(FR)

Songs of Praise

12 In that day(FS) you will say:

“I will praise(FT) you, Lord.
    Although you were angry with me,
your anger has turned away(FU)
    and you have comforted(FV) me.
Surely God is my salvation;(FW)
    I will trust(FX) and not be afraid.
The Lord, the Lord himself,(FY) is my strength(FZ) and my defense[h];
    he has become my salvation.(GA)
With joy you will draw water(GB)
    from the wells(GC) of salvation.

In that day(GD) you will say:

“Give praise to the Lord, proclaim his name;(GE)
    make known among the nations(GF) what he has done,
    and proclaim that his name is exalted.(GG)
Sing(GH) to the Lord, for he has done glorious things;(GI)
    let this be known to all the world.
Shout aloud and sing for joy,(GJ) people of Zion,
    for great(GK) is the Holy One of Israel(GL) among you.(GM)

A Prophecy Against Babylon

13 A prophecy(GN) against Babylon(GO) that Isaiah son of Amoz(GP) saw:(GQ)

Raise a banner(GR) on a bare hilltop,
    shout to them;
beckon to them
    to enter the gates(GS) of the nobles.
I have commanded those I prepared for battle;
    I have summoned my warriors(GT) to carry out my wrath(GU)
    those who rejoice(GV) in my triumph.

Listen, a noise on the mountains,
    like that of a great multitude!(GW)
Listen, an uproar(GX) among the kingdoms,
    like nations massing together!
The Lord Almighty(GY) is mustering(GZ)
    an army for war.
They come from faraway lands,
    from the ends of the heavens(HA)
the Lord and the weapons(HB) of his wrath(HC)
    to destroy(HD) the whole country.

Wail,(HE) for the day(HF) of the Lord is near;
    it will come like destruction(HG) from the Almighty.[i](HH)
Because of this, all hands will go limp,(HI)
    every heart will melt with fear.(HJ)
Terror(HK) will seize them,
    pain and anguish will grip(HL) them;
    they will writhe like a woman in labor.(HM)
They will look aghast at each other,
    their faces aflame.(HN)

See, the day(HO) of the Lord is coming
    —a cruel(HP) day, with wrath(HQ) and fierce anger(HR)
to make the land desolate
    and destroy the sinners within it.
10 The stars of heaven and their constellations
    will not show their light.(HS)
The rising sun(HT) will be darkened(HU)
    and the moon will not give its light.(HV)
11 I will punish(HW) the world for its evil,
    the wicked(HX) for their sins.
I will put an end to the arrogance of the haughty(HY)
    and will humble(HZ) the pride of the ruthless.(IA)
12 I will make people(IB) scarcer than pure gold,
    more rare than the gold of Ophir.(IC)
13 Therefore I will make the heavens tremble;(ID)
    and the earth will shake(IE) from its place
at the wrath(IF) of the Lord Almighty,
    in the day of his burning anger.(IG)

14 Like a hunted(IH) gazelle,
    like sheep without a shepherd,(II)
they will all return to their own people,
    they will flee(IJ) to their native land.(IK)
15 Whoever is captured will be thrust through;
    all who are caught will fall(IL) by the sword.(IM)
16 Their infants(IN) will be dashed to pieces before their eyes;
    their houses will be looted and their wives violated.(IO)

17 See, I will stir up(IP) against them the Medes,(IQ)
    who do not care for silver
    and have no delight in gold.(IR)
18 Their bows(IS) will strike down the young men;(IT)
    they will have no mercy(IU) on infants,
    nor will they look with compassion on children.(IV)
19 Babylon,(IW) the jewel of kingdoms,(IX)
    the pride and glory(IY) of the Babylonians,[j]
will be overthrown(IZ) by God
    like Sodom and Gomorrah.(JA)
20 She will never be inhabited(JB)
    or lived in through all generations;
there no nomads(JC) will pitch their tents,
    there no shepherds will rest their flocks.
21 But desert creatures(JD) will lie there,
    jackals(JE) will fill her houses;
there the owls(JF) will dwell,
    and there the wild goats(JG) will leap about.
22 Hyenas(JH) will inhabit her strongholds,(JI)
    jackals(JJ) her luxurious palaces.
Her time is at hand,(JK)
    and her days will not be prolonged.(JL)

14 The Lord will have compassion(JM) on Jacob;
    once again he will choose(JN) Israel
    and will settle them in their own land.(JO)
Foreigners(JP) will join them
    and unite with the descendants of Jacob.
Nations will take them
    and bring(JQ) them to their own place.
And Israel will take possession of the nations(JR)
    and make them male and female servants in the Lord’s land.
They will make captives(JS) of their captors
    and rule over their oppressors.(JT)

On the day the Lord gives you relief(JU) from your suffering and turmoil(JV) and from the harsh labor forced on you,(JW) you will take up this taunt(JX) against the king of Babylon:(JY)

How the oppressor(JZ) has come to an end!
    How his fury[k] has ended!
The Lord has broken the rod(KA) of the wicked,(KB)
    the scepter(KC) of the rulers,
which in anger struck down peoples(KD)
    with unceasing blows,
and in fury subdued(KE) nations
    with relentless aggression.(KF)
All the lands are at rest and at peace;(KG)
    they break into singing.(KH)
Even the junipers(KI) and the cedars of Lebanon
    gloat over you and say,
“Now that you have been laid low,
    no one comes to cut us down.”(KJ)

The realm of the dead(KK) below is all astir
    to meet you at your coming;
it rouses the spirits of the departed(KL) to greet you—
    all those who were leaders(KM) in the world;
it makes them rise from their thrones—
    all those who were kings over the nations.(KN)
10 They will all respond,
    they will say to you,
“You also have become weak, as we are;
    you have become like us.”(KO)
11 All your pomp has been brought down to the grave,(KP)
    along with the noise of your harps;(KQ)
maggots are spread out beneath you
    and worms(KR) cover you.(KS)

12 How you have fallen(KT) from heaven,
    morning star,(KU) son of the dawn!
You have been cast down to the earth,
    you who once laid low the nations!(KV)
13 You said in your heart,
    “I will ascend(KW) to the heavens;
I will raise my throne(KX)
    above the stars of God;
I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly,(KY)
    on the utmost heights(KZ) of Mount Zaphon.[l]
14 I will ascend above the tops of the clouds;(LA)
    I will make myself like the Most High.”(LB)
15 But you are brought down(LC) to the realm of the dead,(LD)
    to the depths(LE) of the pit.(LF)

16 Those who see you stare at you,
    they ponder your fate:(LG)
“Is this the man who shook(LH) the earth
    and made kingdoms tremble,
17 the man who made the world a wilderness,(LI)
    who overthrew(LJ) its cities
    and would not let his captives go home?”(LK)

18 All the kings of the nations lie in state,
    each in his own tomb.(LL)
19 But you are cast out(LM) of your tomb
    like a rejected branch;
you are covered with the slain,(LN)
    with those pierced by the sword,(LO)
    those who descend to the stones of the pit.(LP)
Like a corpse trampled underfoot,
20     you will not join them in burial,(LQ)
for you have destroyed your land
    and killed your people.

Let the offspring(LR) of the wicked(LS)
    never be mentioned(LT) again.
21 Prepare a place to slaughter his children(LU)
    for the sins of their ancestors;(LV)
they are not to rise to inherit the land
    and cover the earth with their cities.

22 “I will rise up(LW) against them,”
    declares the Lord Almighty.
“I will wipe out Babylon’s name(LX) and survivors,
    her offspring and descendants,(LY)
declares the Lord.
23 “I will turn her into a place for owls(LZ)
    and into swampland;
I will sweep her with the broom of destruction,(MA)
    declares the Lord Almighty.(MB)

24 The Lord Almighty has sworn,(MC)

“Surely, as I have planned,(MD) so it will be,
    and as I have purposed, so it will happen.(ME)
25 I will crush the Assyrian(MF) in my land;
    on my mountains I will trample him down.
His yoke(MG) will be taken from my people,
    and his burden removed from their shoulders.(MH)

26 This is the plan(MI) determined for the whole world;
    this is the hand(MJ) stretched out over all nations.
27 For the Lord Almighty has purposed,(MK) and who can thwart him?
    His hand(ML) is stretched out, and who can turn it back?(MM)

A Prophecy Against the Philistines

28 This prophecy(MN) came in the year(MO) King Ahaz(MP) died:

29 Do not rejoice, all you Philistines,(MQ)
    that the rod that struck you is broken;
from the root of that snake will spring up a viper,(MR)
    its fruit will be a darting, venomous serpent.(MS)
30 The poorest of the poor will find pasture,
    and the needy(MT) will lie down in safety.(MU)
But your root I will destroy by famine;(MV)
    it will slay(MW) your survivors.(MX)

31 Wail,(MY) you gate!(MZ) Howl, you city!
    Melt away, all you Philistines!(NA)
A cloud of smoke comes from the north,(NB)
    and there is not a straggler in its ranks.(NC)
32 What answer shall be given
    to the envoys(ND) of that nation?
“The Lord has established Zion,(NE)
    and in her his afflicted people will find refuge.(NF)

An Oracle Concerning Moab

15 An (A)oracle concerning (B)Moab.

Because (C)Ar of Moab is laid waste in a night,
    Moab is undone;
because (D)Kir of Moab is laid waste in a night,
    Moab is undone.
He has gone up to the temple,[a] and to (E)Dibon,
    to the high places[b] to weep;
over (F)Nebo and over (G)Medeba
    Moab (H)wails.
On every head is (I)baldness;
    every beard is shorn;
in the streets they wear sackcloth;
    on the housetops and in the squares
    everyone wails and melts in tears.
(J)Heshbon and (K)Elealeh cry out;
    their voice is heard as far as (L)Jahaz;
therefore the armed men of Moab cry aloud;
    his soul trembles.
My heart cries out for Moab;
    her fugitives flee to Zoar,
    to (M)Eglath-shelishiyah.
For at the (N)ascent of Luhith
    they go up weeping;
on the road to (O)Horonaim
    they raise a cry of destruction;
the waters of (P)Nimrim
    are a desolation;
the grass is withered, the vegetation fails,
    the greenery is no more.
(Q)Therefore the abundance they have gained
    and what they have laid up
they carry away
    over the Brook of the Willows.
For a cry has gone
    around the land of Moab;
her wailing reaches to Eglaim;
    her wailing reaches to Beer-elim.
For the waters of (R)Dibon[c] are full of blood;
    for I will bring upon Dibon even more,
(S)a lion for those of Moab who escape,
    for the remnant of the land.
16 (T)Send the lamb to the ruler of the land,
from (U)Sela, by way of the desert,
    to the mount of the daughter of Zion.
Like fleeing birds,
    like a scattered nest,
so are the daughters of Moab
    at (V)the fords of the Arnon.

“Give counsel;
    grant justice;
(W)make your shade like night
    at the height of noon;
shelter the outcasts;
    do not reveal the fugitive;
let (X)the outcasts of Moab
    sojourn among you;
be a shelter to them[d]
    from the destroyer.
When the oppressor is no more,
    and destruction has ceased,
and he who tramples underfoot has vanished from the land,
(Y)then a throne will be established in steadfast love,
    and on it will sit in faithfulness
    in the tent of David
one who judges and seeks justice
    and is swift to do righteousness.”

(Z)We have heard of the pride of Moab—
    how proud he is!—
(AA)of his arrogance, his pride, and his insolence;
    in his idle boasting he is not right.
Therefore let Moab wail for Moab,
    (AB)let everyone wail.
Mourn, utterly stricken,
    for the (AC)raisin cakes of (AD)Kir-hareseth.

For the fields of Heshbon languish,
    and (AE)the vine of Sibmah;
the lords of the nations
    have struck down its branches,
which reached to Jazer
    and strayed to the desert;
its shoots spread abroad
    and passed over the sea.
Therefore (AF)I weep with (AG)the weeping of Jazer
    for the vine of Sibmah;
I drench you with my tears,
    O Heshbon and Elealeh;
for over (AH)your summer fruit and your harvest
    the shout has ceased.
10 (AI)And joy and gladness are taken away from (AJ)the fruitful field,
and in the vineyards no (AK)songs are sung,
    no cheers are raised;
no (AL)treader treads out wine (AM)in the presses;
    I have put an end to the shouting.
11 Therefore (AN)my inner parts moan like a lyre for Moab,
    and my inmost self for Kir-hareseth.

12 And when Moab presents himself, when (AO)he wearies himself on (AP)the high place, when he comes to his sanctuary to pray, he will not prevail.

13 This is the word that the Lord spoke concerning Moab (AQ)in the past. 14 But now the Lord has spoken, saying, “In three years, (AR)like the years of a hired worker, the glory of Moab will be brought into contempt, in spite of all his great multitude, and those who remain will be (AS)very few and feeble.”

An Oracle Concerning Damascus

17 An (AT)oracle concerning (AU)Damascus.

Behold, Damascus will cease to be a city
    and will become a heap of ruins.
The cities of (AV)Aroer are deserted;
    they will be for flocks,
    which will lie down, and (AW)none will make them afraid.
The fortress will disappear from (AX)Ephraim,
    and the kingdom from (AY)Damascus;
and the remnant of Syria will be
    like (AZ)the glory of the children of Israel,
declares the Lord of hosts.

And in that day (BA)the glory of Jacob will be brought low,
    and (BB)the fat of his flesh will grow lean.
And it shall be (BC)as when the reaper gathers standing grain
    and his arm harvests the ears,
and as when one gleans the ears of grain
    in (BD)the Valley of Rephaim.
(BE)Gleanings will be left in it,
    as when an olive tree is beaten—
two or three berries
    in the top of the highest bough,
four or five
    on the branches of a fruit tree,
declares the Lord God of Israel.

(BF)In that day man will look to his Maker, and his eyes will look on the Holy One of Israel. (BG)He will not look to the altars, the work of his hands, and he will not look on what his own fingers have made, either the (BH)Asherim or the altars of incense.

(BI)In that day their strong cities will be like the deserted places of the wooded heights and the hilltops, which they deserted because of the children of Israel, and there will be desolation.

10 For (BJ)you have forgotten the God of your salvation
    and have not remembered the (BK)Rock of your refuge;
therefore, though you plant pleasant plants
    and sow the vine-branch of a stranger,
11 though you make them grow[e] on the day that you plant them,
    and make them blossom in the morning that you sow,
yet the harvest will flee away[f]
    in a day of grief and incurable pain.

12 Ah, (BL)the thunder of many peoples;
    they thunder like the thundering of the sea!
Ah, the roar of nations;
    they roar like the roaring of mighty waters!
13 (BM)The nations roar like the roaring of many waters,
    (BN)but he will rebuke them, and they will flee far away,
chased (BO)like chaff on the mountains before the wind
    and (BP)whirling dust before the storm.
14 (BQ)At evening time, behold, terror!
    Before morning, they are no more!
This is the portion of those who loot us,
    and the lot of those who plunder us.

An Oracle Concerning Cush

18 Ah, land of (BR)whirring wings
    that is beyond the rivers of (BS)Cush,[g]
which (BT)sends ambassadors by the sea,
    in vessels of papyrus on the waters!
Go, you swift messengers,
    to a nation (BU)tall and smooth,
to a people feared near and far,
    a nation (BV)mighty and conquering,
    whose land the rivers divide.

All you inhabitants of the world,
    you who dwell on the earth,
when (BW)a signal is raised on the mountains, look!
    When a trumpet is blown, hear!
For thus the Lord said to me:
“I will quietly look (BX)from my dwelling
    like clear heat in sunshine,
    like a cloud of dew in the heat of harvest.”
(BY)For before the harvest, when the blossom is over,
    and the flower becomes a ripening grape,
he cuts off the shoots with pruning hooks,
    and the spreading branches he lops off and clears away.
(BZ)They shall all of them be left
    to the birds of prey of the mountains
    and to the beasts of the earth.
And the birds of prey will summer on them,
    and all the beasts of the earth will winter on them.

(CA)At that time tribute will be brought to the Lord of hosts

from a people (CB)tall and smooth,
    from a people feared near and far,
a nation mighty and conquering,
    whose land the rivers divide,

to (CC)Mount Zion, the place of the (CD)name of the Lord of hosts.

An Oracle Concerning Egypt

19 An (CE)oracle concerning (CF)Egypt.

Behold, the Lord (CG)is riding on a swift cloud
    and comes to Egypt;
and (CH)the idols of Egypt will tremble at his presence,
    and the heart of the Egyptians will (CI)melt within them.
And I will stir up Egyptians against Egyptians,
    (CJ)and they will fight, each against another
    and each against his neighbor,
    city against city, kingdom against kingdom;
and the spirit of the Egyptians within them will be emptied out,
    and I will confound[h] their (CK)counsel;
and they will inquire of the idols and the sorcerers,
    and (CL)the mediums and the necromancers;
and I will give over the Egyptians
    into the hand of (CM)a hard master,
and a fierce king will rule over them,
    declares the Lord God of hosts.

And the waters of the sea will be dried up,
    and the river will be dry and parched,
and its canals will become foul,
    and the branches of Egypt's Nile will diminish and dry up,
    reeds and rushes will rot away.
There will be bare places by the Nile,
    on the brink of the Nile,
and all that is sown by the Nile will be parched,
    will be driven away, and will be no more.
The (CN)fishermen will mourn and lament,
    all who cast a hook in the Nile;
and they will languish
    who spread nets on the water.
The workers in (CO)combed flax will be in despair,
    and the weavers of white cotton.
10 Those who are the (CP)pillars of the land will be crushed,
    and all who (CQ)work for pay will be grieved.

11 The princes of (CR)Zoan are utterly foolish;
    the wisest counselors of Pharaoh give stupid counsel.
How can you say to Pharaoh,
    “I am a son of the wise,
    a son of ancient kings”?
12 Where then are your (CS)wise men?
    Let them tell you
    that they might know what the Lord of hosts has purposed against Egypt.
13 The princes of (CT)Zoan have become fools,
    and the princes of (CU)Memphis are deluded;
those who are the (CV)cornerstones of her tribes
    have made Egypt stagger.
14 The Lord has mingled within her (CW)a spirit of confusion,
and they will make Egypt stagger in all its deeds,
    (CX)as a drunken man staggers in his vomit.
15 And there will be nothing for Egypt
    that (CY)head or tail, palm branch or reed, may do.

Egypt, Assyria, Israel Blessed

16 In that day the Egyptians will be (CZ)like women, and (DA)tremble with fear before the hand that the Lord of hosts shakes over them. 17 And the land of Judah will become a terror to the Egyptians. Everyone to whom it is mentioned will fear because of the purpose that the Lord of hosts has purposed against them.

18 (DB)In that day there will be (DC)five cities in the land of Egypt that (DD)speak the language of Canaan and swear allegiance to the Lord of hosts. One of these will be called the City of Destruction.[i]

19 In that day there will be an (DE)altar to the Lord in the midst of the land of Egypt, and a (DF)pillar to the Lord at its border. 20 (DG)It will be a sign and a witness to the Lord of hosts in the land of Egypt. When they cry to the Lord because of oppressors, (DH)he will send them a savior and defender, and deliver them. 21 (DI)And the Lord will make himself known to the Egyptians, and the Egyptians will know the Lord in that day (DJ)and worship with sacrifice and offering, and they will make vows to the Lord and perform them. 22 (DK)And the Lord will strike Egypt, striking and healing, and they will return to the Lord, and he will listen to their pleas for mercy and heal them.

23 (DL)In that day there will be a highway from Egypt to Assyria, and Assyria will come into Egypt, and Egypt into Assyria, (DM)and the Egyptians will worship with the Assyrians.

24 In that day Israel will be the third with Egypt and Assyria, (DN)a blessing in the midst of the earth, 25 whom the Lord of hosts has blessed, saying, “Blessed be Egypt (DO)my people, and Assyria (DP)the work of my hands, and (DQ)Israel my inheritance.”

A Sign Against Egypt and Cush

20 In the year that (DR)the commander in chief, who was sent by Sargon the king of Assyria, came to (DS)Ashdod and fought against it and captured it— at that time the Lord spoke by Isaiah the son of Amoz, saying, “Go, and loose the sackcloth from your waist and take off your sandals from your feet,” and he did so, walking (DT)naked and barefoot.

Then the Lord said, “As my servant Isaiah has walked naked and barefoot for three years (DU)as a sign and a portent against Egypt and Cush,[j] so shall the (DV)king of Assyria lead away the Egyptian captives and the Cushite exiles, both the young and the old, naked and barefoot, with buttocks uncovered, the nakedness of Egypt. (DW)Then they shall be dismayed and ashamed because of Cush their hope and of Egypt their boast. And the inhabitants of (DX)this coastland will say in that day, ‘Behold, this is what has happened to those in whom we hoped and (DY)to whom we fled for help to be delivered from the king of Assyria! And we, how shall we escape?’”

Fallen, Fallen Is Babylon

21 The (DZ)oracle concerning the wilderness of (EA)the sea.

(EB)As whirlwinds in the Negeb sweep on,
    it comes from the wilderness,
    from a terrible land.
A stern vision is told to me;
    (EC)the traitor betrays,
    and the destroyer destroys.
Go up, O (ED)Elam;
    lay siege, O (EE)Media;
all the (EF)sighing she has caused
    I bring to an end.
Therefore my loins are filled with anguish;
    (EG)pangs have seized me,
    like the pangs of a woman in labor;
I am bowed down so that I cannot hear;
    I am dismayed so that I cannot see.
My heart staggers; horror has appalled me;
    (EH)the twilight I longed for
    has been turned for me into trembling.
(EI)They prepare the table,
    they spread the rugs,[k]
    they eat, they drink.
Arise, O princes;
    (EJ)oil the shield!
For thus the Lord said to me:
“Go, set a watchman;
    let him announce what he sees.
When he sees riders, horsemen in pairs,
    riders on donkeys, riders on camels,
let him listen diligently,
    very diligently.”
Then he who saw cried out:[l]
(EK)“Upon a watchtower I stand, O Lord,
    continually by day,
and at my post I am stationed
    whole nights.
And behold, here come riders,
    horsemen in pairs!”
(EL)And he answered,
    (EM)“Fallen, fallen is Babylon;
(EN)and all the carved images of her gods
    he has shattered to the ground.”
10 O (EO)my threshed and winnowed one,
    what I have heard from the Lord of hosts,
    the God of Israel, I announce to you.

11 The (EP)oracle concerning (EQ)Dumah.

One is calling to me from (ER)Seir,
    “Watchman, what time of the night?
    Watchman, what time of the night?”
12 The watchman says:
“Morning comes, and also (ES)the night.
    If you will inquire, (ET)inquire;
    come back again.”

13 The (EU)oracle concerning (EV)Arabia.

In the thickets in (EW)Arabia you will lodge,
    O (EX)caravans of (EY)Dedanites.
14 To the thirsty bring water;
    meet the fugitive with bread,
    O inhabitants of the land of (EZ)Tema.
15 For they have fled from the swords,
    from the drawn sword,
from the bent bow,
    and from the press of battle.

16 For thus the Lord said to me, “Within a year, (FA)according to the years of a hired worker, all the glory of (FB)Kedar will come to an end. 17 And the remainder of the archers of the mighty men of the sons of (FC)Kedar will be few, (FD)for the Lord, the God of Israel, has spoken.”

An Oracle Concerning Jerusalem

22 The (FE)oracle concerning (FF)the valley of vision.

What do you mean that you have gone up,
    all of you, to the housetops,
you who are full of shoutings,
    tumultuous city, (FG)exultant town?
Your slain are (FH)not slain with the sword
    or dead in battle.
(FI)All your leaders have fled together;
    without the bow they were captured.
All of you who were found were captured,
    though they had fled far away.
Therefore I said:
“Look away from me;
    (FJ)let me weep bitter tears;
do not labor to comfort me
    concerning the destruction of the daughter of my people.”

(FK)For the Lord God of hosts has (FL)a day
    of tumult and (FM)trampling and (FN)confusion
    in (FO)the valley of vision,
a battering down of walls
    and a shouting to the mountains.
And (FP)Elam bore the quiver
    with chariots and horsemen,
    and (FQ)Kir uncovered the shield.
Your choicest valleys were full of chariots,
    and the horsemen took their stand at the gates.
He has taken away (FR)the covering of Judah.

In that day you looked to (FS)the weapons of the House of the Forest, and you saw that (FT)the breaches of the city of David were many. (FU)You collected the waters of the lower pool, 10 and you counted the houses of Jerusalem, and you broke down the houses to fortify the wall. 11 (FV)You made a reservoir between (FW)the two walls for the water of (FX)the old pool. But (FY)you did not look to him who did it, or see him who planned it long ago.

12 In that day (FZ)the Lord God of hosts
    called for weeping and mourning,
    for (GA)baldness and (GB)wearing sackcloth;
13 and behold, joy and gladness,
    killing oxen and slaughtering sheep,
    eating flesh and drinking wine.
(GC)“Let us eat and drink,
    for tomorrow we die.”
14 The Lord of hosts (GD)has revealed himself in my ears:
“Surely (GE)this iniquity will not be atoned for you (GF)until you die,”
    says the Lord God of hosts.

15 Thus says the Lord God of hosts, “Come, go to this steward, to (GG)Shebna, who is over the household, and say to him: 16 What have you to do here, and whom have you here, (GH)that you have cut out here a tomb for yourself, you (GI)who cut out a tomb on the height and carve a dwelling for yourself in the rock? 17 Behold, the Lord will hurl you away violently, O you strong man. (GJ)He will seize firm hold on you 18 and whirl you around and around, and throw you like a ball into a wide land. There you shall die, and there shall be (GK)your glorious chariots, you shame of your master's house. 19 (GL)I will thrust you from your office, and you will be pulled down from your station. 20 In that day I will call my servant (GM)Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, 21 and (GN)I will clothe him with your robe, and will bind your sash on him, and will commit your authority to his hand. And he shall be (GO)a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and to the house of Judah. 22 And I will place (GP)on his shoulder (GQ)the key of the house of David. (GR)He shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open. 23 And I will fasten him (GS)like a peg in a secure place, and he will become (GT)a throne of honor to his father's house.

A Prophecy Against Moab(A)

15 A prophecy(B) against Moab:(C)

Ar(D) in Moab is ruined,(E)
    destroyed in a night!
Kir(F) in Moab is ruined,
    destroyed in a night!
Dibon(G) goes up to its temple,
    to its high places(H) to weep;
    Moab wails(I) over Nebo(J) and Medeba.
Every head is shaved(K)
    and every beard cut off.(L)
In the streets they wear sackcloth;(M)
    on the roofs(N) and in the public squares(O)
they all wail,(P)
    prostrate with weeping.(Q)
Heshbon(R) and Elealeh(S) cry out,
    their voices are heard all the way to Jahaz.(T)
Therefore the armed men of Moab cry out,
    and their hearts are faint.

My heart cries out(U) over Moab;(V)
    her fugitives(W) flee as far as Zoar,(X)
    as far as Eglath Shelishiyah.
They go up the hill to Luhith,
    weeping as they go;
on the road to Horonaim(Y)
    they lament their destruction.(Z)
The waters of Nimrim are dried up(AA)
    and the grass is withered;(AB)
the vegetation is gone(AC)
    and nothing green is left.(AD)
So the wealth they have acquired(AE) and stored up
    they carry away over the Ravine of the Poplars.
Their outcry echoes along the border of Moab;
    their wailing reaches as far as Eglaim,
    their lamentation as far as Beer(AF) Elim.
The waters of Dimon[a] are full of blood,
    but I will bring still more upon Dimon[b]
a lion(AG) upon the fugitives of Moab(AH)
    and upon those who remain in the land.

16 Send lambs(AI) as tribute(AJ)
    to the ruler of the land,
from Sela,(AK) across the desert,
    to the mount of Daughter Zion.(AL)
Like fluttering birds
    pushed from the nest,(AM)
so are the women of Moab(AN)
    at the fords(AO) of the Arnon.(AP)

“Make up your mind,” Moab says.
    “Render a decision.
Make your shadow like night—
    at high noon.
Hide the fugitives,(AQ)
    do not betray the refugees.
Let the Moabite fugitives stay with you;
    be their shelter(AR) from the destroyer.”

The oppressor(AS) will come to an end,
    and destruction will cease;(AT)
    the aggressor will vanish from the land.
In love a throne(AU) will be established;(AV)
    in faithfulness a man will sit on it—
    one from the house[c] of David(AW)
one who in judging seeks justice(AX)
    and speeds the cause of righteousness.

We have heard of Moab’s(AY) pride(AZ)
    how great is her arrogance!—
of her conceit, her pride and her insolence;
    but her boasts are empty.
Therefore the Moabites wail,(BA)
    they wail together for Moab.
Lament and grieve
    for the raisin cakes(BB) of Kir Hareseth.(BC)
The fields of Heshbon(BD) wither,(BE)
    the vines of Sibmah(BF) also.
The rulers of the nations
    have trampled down the choicest vines,(BG)
which once reached Jazer(BH)
    and spread toward the desert.
Their shoots spread out(BI)
    and went as far as the sea.[d](BJ)
So I weep,(BK) as Jazer weeps,
    for the vines of Sibmah.
Heshbon and Elealeh,(BL)
    I drench you with tears!(BM)
The shouts of joy(BN) over your ripened fruit
    and over your harvests(BO) have been stilled.
10 Joy and gladness are taken away from the orchards;(BP)
    no one sings or shouts(BQ) in the vineyards;
no one treads(BR) out wine at the presses,(BS)
    for I have put an end to the shouting.
11 My heart laments for Moab(BT) like a harp,(BU)
    my inmost being(BV) for Kir Hareseth.
12 When Moab appears at her high place,(BW)
    she only wears herself out;
when she goes to her shrine(BX) to pray,
    it is to no avail.(BY)

13 This is the word the Lord has already spoken concerning Moab. 14 But now the Lord says: “Within three years,(BZ) as a servant bound by contract(CA) would count them,(CB) Moab’s splendor and all her many people will be despised,(CC) and her survivors will be very few and feeble.”(CD)

A Prophecy Against Damascus

17 A prophecy(CE) against Damascus:(CF)

“See, Damascus will no longer be a city
    but will become a heap of ruins.(CG)
The cities of Aroer(CH) will be deserted
    and left to flocks,(CI) which will lie down,(CJ)
    with no one to make them afraid.(CK)
The fortified(CL) city will disappear from Ephraim,
    and royal power from Damascus;
the remnant of Aram will be
    like the glory(CM) of the Israelites,”(CN)
declares the Lord Almighty.

“In that day(CO) the glory(CP) of Jacob will fade;
    the fat of his body will waste(CQ) away.
It will be as when reapers harvest the standing grain,
    gathering(CR) the grain in their arms—
as when someone gleans heads of grain(CS)
    in the Valley of Rephaim.(CT)
Yet some gleanings will remain,(CU)
    as when an olive tree is beaten,(CV)
leaving two or three olives on the topmost branches,
    four or five on the fruitful boughs,”
declares the Lord, the God of Israel.

In that day(CW) people will look(CX) to their Maker(CY)
    and turn their eyes to the Holy One(CZ) of Israel.
They will not look to the altars,(DA)
    the work of their hands,(DB)
and they will have no regard for the Asherah poles[e](DC)
    and the incense altars their fingers(DD) have made.

In that day their strong cities, which they left because of the Israelites, will be like places abandoned to thickets and undergrowth.(DE) And all will be desolation.

10 You have forgotten(DF) God your Savior;(DG)
    you have not remembered the Rock,(DH) your fortress.(DI)
Therefore, though you set out the finest plants
    and plant imported vines,(DJ)
11 though on the day you set them out, you make them grow,
    and on the morning(DK) when you plant them, you bring them to bud,
yet the harvest(DL) will be as nothing(DM)
    in the day of disease and incurable(DN) pain.(DO)

12 Woe to the many nations that rage(DP)
    they rage like the raging sea!(DQ)
Woe to the peoples who roar(DR)
    they roar like the roaring of great waters!(DS)
13 Although the peoples roar(DT) like the roar of surging waters,
    when he rebukes(DU) them they flee(DV) far away,
driven before the wind like chaff(DW) on the hills,
    like tumbleweed before a gale.(DX)
14 In the evening, sudden(DY) terror!(DZ)
    Before the morning, they are gone!(EA)
This is the portion of those who loot us,
    the lot of those who plunder us.

A Prophecy Against Cush

18 Woe(EB) to the land of whirring wings[f]
    along the rivers of Cush,[g](EC)
which sends envoys(ED) by sea
    in papyrus(EE) boats over the water.

Go, swift messengers,
to a people tall and smooth-skinned,(EF)
    to a people feared far and wide,
an aggressive(EG) nation of strange speech,
    whose land is divided by rivers.(EH)

All you people of the world,(EI)
    you who live on the earth,
when a banner(EJ) is raised on the mountains,
    you will see it,
and when a trumpet(EK) sounds,
    you will hear it.
This is what the Lord says to me:
    “I will remain quiet(EL) and will look on from my dwelling place,(EM)
like shimmering heat in the sunshine,(EN)
    like a cloud of dew(EO) in the heat of harvest.”
For, before the harvest, when the blossom is gone
    and the flower becomes a ripening grape,
he will cut off(EP) the shoots with pruning knives,
    and cut down and take away the spreading branches.(EQ)
They will all be left to the mountain birds of prey(ER)
    and to the wild animals;(ES)
the birds will feed on them all summer,
    the wild animals all winter.

At that time gifts(ET) will be brought to the Lord Almighty

from a people tall and smooth-skinned,(EU)
    from a people feared(EV) far and wide,
an aggressive nation of strange speech,
    whose land is divided by rivers(EW)

the gifts will be brought to Mount Zion, the place of the Name of the Lord Almighty.(EX)

A Prophecy Against Egypt

19 A prophecy(EY) against Egypt:(EZ)

See, the Lord rides on a swift cloud(FA)
    and is coming to Egypt.
The idols of Egypt tremble before him,
    and the hearts of the Egyptians melt(FB) with fear.

“I will stir up Egyptian against Egyptian—
    brother will fight against brother,(FC)
    neighbor against neighbor,
    city against city,
    kingdom against kingdom.(FD)
The Egyptians will lose heart,(FE)
    and I will bring their plans(FF) to nothing;(FG)
they will consult the idols and the spirits of the dead,
    the mediums and the spiritists.(FH)
I will hand the Egyptians over
    to the power of a cruel master,
and a fierce king(FI) will rule over them,”
    declares the Lord, the Lord Almighty.

The waters of the river will dry up,(FJ)
    and the riverbed will be parched and dry.(FK)
The canals will stink;(FL)
    the streams of Egypt will dwindle and dry up.(FM)
The reeds(FN) and rushes will wither,(FO)
    also the plants(FP) along the Nile,
    at the mouth of the river.
Every sown field(FQ) along the Nile
    will become parched, will blow away and be no more.(FR)
The fishermen(FS) will groan and lament,
    all who cast hooks(FT) into the Nile;
those who throw nets on the water
    will pine away.
Those who work with combed flax(FU) will despair,
    the weavers of fine linen(FV) will lose hope.
10 The workers in cloth will be dejected,
    and all the wage earners will be sick at heart.

11 The officials of Zoan(FW) are nothing but fools;
    the wise counselors(FX) of Pharaoh give senseless advice.(FY)
How can you say to Pharaoh,
    “I am one of the wise men,(FZ)
    a disciple of the ancient kings”?

12 Where are your wise men(GA) now?
    Let them show you and make known
what the Lord Almighty
    has planned(GB) against Egypt.
13 The officials of Zoan(GC) have become fools,
    the leaders of Memphis(GD) are deceived;
the cornerstones(GE) of her peoples
    have led Egypt astray.
14 The Lord has poured into them
    a spirit of dizziness;(GF)
they make Egypt stagger in all that she does,
    as a drunkard staggers(GG) around in his vomit.
15 There is nothing Egypt can do—
    head or tail, palm branch or reed.(GH)

16 In that day(GI) the Egyptians will become weaklings.(GJ) They will shudder with fear(GK) at the uplifted hand(GL) that the Lord Almighty raises against them. 17 And the land of Judah will bring terror to the Egyptians; everyone to whom Judah is mentioned will be terrified,(GM) because of what the Lord Almighty is planning(GN) against them.

18 In that day(GO) five cities(GP) in Egypt will speak the language of Canaan and swear allegiance(GQ) to the Lord Almighty. One of them will be called the City of the Sun.[h](GR)

19 In that day(GS) there will be an altar(GT) to the Lord in the heart of Egypt,(GU) and a monument(GV) to the Lord at its border. 20 It will be a sign and witness(GW) to the Lord Almighty in the land of Egypt. When they cry out to the Lord because of their oppressors, he will send them a savior(GX) and defender, and he will rescue(GY) them. 21 So the Lord will make himself known to the Egyptians, and in that day they will acknowledge(GZ) the Lord. They will worship(HA) with sacrifices and grain offerings; they will make vows to the Lord and keep them.(HB) 22 The Lord will strike(HC) Egypt with a plague;(HD) he will strike them and heal them. They will turn(HE) to the Lord, and he will respond to their pleas and heal(HF) them.

23 In that day(HG) there will be a highway(HH) from Egypt to Assyria.(HI) The Assyrians will go to Egypt and the Egyptians to Assyria. The Egyptians and Assyrians will worship(HJ) together. 24 In that day(HK) Israel will be the third, along with Egypt and Assyria,(HL) a blessing[i](HM) on the earth. 25 The Lord Almighty will bless(HN) them, saying, “Blessed be Egypt my people,(HO) Assyria my handiwork,(HP) and Israel my inheritance.(HQ)

A Prophecy Against Egypt and Cush

20 In the year that the supreme commander,(HR) sent by Sargon king of Assyria, came to Ashdod(HS) and attacked and captured it— at that time the Lord spoke through Isaiah son of Amoz.(HT) He said to him, “Take off the sackcloth(HU) from your body and the sandals(HV) from your feet.” And he did so, going around stripped(HW) and barefoot.(HX)

Then the Lord said, “Just as my servant(HY) Isaiah has gone stripped and barefoot for three years,(HZ) as a sign(IA) and portent(IB) against Egypt(IC) and Cush,[j](ID) so the king(IE) of Assyria will lead away stripped(IF) and barefoot the Egyptian captives(IG) and Cushite(IH) exiles, young and old, with buttocks bared(II)—to Egypt’s shame.(IJ) Those who trusted(IK) in Cush(IL) and boasted in Egypt(IM) will be dismayed and put to shame.(IN) In that day(IO) the people who live on this coast will say, ‘See what has happened(IP) to those we relied on,(IQ) those we fled to for help(IR) and deliverance from the king of Assyria! How then can we escape?(IS)’”

A Prophecy Against Babylon

21 A prophecy(IT) against the Desert(IU) by the Sea:

Like whirlwinds(IV) sweeping through the southland,(IW)
    an invader comes from the desert,
    from a land of terror.

A dire(IX) vision has been shown to me:
    The traitor betrays,(IY) the looter takes loot.
Elam,(IZ) attack! Media,(JA) lay siege!
    I will bring to an end all the groaning she caused.

At this my body is racked with pain,(JB)
    pangs seize me, like those of a woman in labor;(JC)
I am staggered by what I hear,
    I am bewildered(JD) by what I see.
My heart(JE) falters,
    fear makes me tremble;(JF)
the twilight I longed for
    has become a horror(JG) to me.

They set the tables,
    they spread the rugs,
    they eat, they drink!(JH)
Get up, you officers,
    oil the shields!(JI)

This is what the Lord says to me:

“Go, post a lookout(JJ)
    and have him report what he sees.
When he sees chariots(JK)
    with teams of horses,
riders on donkeys
    or riders on camels,(JL)
let him be alert,
    fully alert.”

And the lookout[k](JM) shouted,

“Day after day, my lord, I stand on the watchtower;
    every night I stay at my post.
Look, here comes a man in a chariot(JN)
    with a team of horses.
And he gives back the answer:
    ‘Babylon(JO) has fallen,(JP) has fallen!
All the images of its gods(JQ)
    lie shattered(JR) on the ground!’”

10 My people who are crushed on the threshing floor,(JS)
    I tell you what I have heard
from the Lord Almighty,
    from the God of Israel.

A Prophecy Against Edom

11 A prophecy against Dumah[l]:(JT)

Someone calls to me from Seir,(JU)
    “Watchman, what is left of the night?
    Watchman, what is left of the night?”
12 The watchman replies,
    “Morning is coming, but also the night.
If you would ask, then ask;
    and come back yet again.”

A Prophecy Against Arabia

13 A prophecy(JV) against Arabia:(JW)

You caravans of Dedanites,(JX)
    who camp in the thickets of Arabia,
14     bring water for the thirsty;
you who live in Tema,(JY)
    bring food for the fugitives.
15 They flee(JZ) from the sword,(KA)
    from the drawn sword,
from the bent bow
    and from the heat of battle.

16 This is what the Lord says to me: “Within one year, as a servant bound by contract(KB) would count it, all the splendor(KC) of Kedar(KD) will come to an end. 17 The survivors of the archers, the warriors of Kedar, will be few.(KE)” The Lord, the God of Israel, has spoken.(KF)

A Prophecy About Jerusalem

22 A prophecy(KG) against the Valley(KH) of Vision:(KI)

What troubles you now,
    that you have all gone up on the roofs,(KJ)
you town so full of commotion,
    you city of tumult(KK) and revelry?(KL)
Your slain(KM) were not killed by the sword,(KN)
    nor did they die in battle.
All your leaders have fled(KO) together;
    they have been captured(KP) without using the bow.
All you who were caught were taken prisoner together,
    having fled while the enemy was still far away.
Therefore I said, “Turn away from me;
    let me weep(KQ) bitterly.
Do not try to console me
    over the destruction of my people.”(KR)

The Lord, the Lord Almighty, has a day(KS)
    of tumult and trampling(KT) and terror(KU)
    in the Valley of Vision,(KV)
a day of battering down walls(KW)
    and of crying out to the mountains.
Elam(KX) takes up the quiver,(KY)
    with her charioteers and horses;
    Kir(KZ) uncovers the shield.
Your choicest valleys(LA) are full of chariots,
    and horsemen are posted at the city gates.(LB)

The Lord stripped away the defenses of Judah,
    and you looked in that day(LC)
    to the weapons(LD) in the Palace of the Forest.(LE)
You saw that the walls of the City of David
    were broken through(LF) in many places;
you stored up water
    in the Lower Pool.(LG)
10 You counted the buildings in Jerusalem
    and tore down houses(LH) to strengthen the wall.(LI)
11 You built a reservoir between the two walls(LJ)
    for the water of the Old Pool,(LK)
but you did not look to the One who made it,
    or have regard(LL) for the One who planned(LM) it long ago.

12 The Lord, the Lord Almighty,
    called you on that day(LN)
to weep(LO) and to wail,
    to tear out your hair(LP) and put on sackcloth.(LQ)
13 But see, there is joy and revelry,(LR)
    slaughtering of cattle and killing of sheep,
    eating of meat and drinking of wine!(LS)
“Let us eat and drink,” you say,
    “for tomorrow we die!”(LT)

14 The Lord Almighty has revealed this in my hearing:(LU) “Till your dying day this sin will not be atoned(LV) for,” says the Lord, the Lord Almighty.

15 This is what the Lord, the Lord Almighty, says:

“Go, say to this steward,
    to Shebna(LW) the palace(LX) administrator:(LY)
16 What are you doing here and who gave you permission
    to cut out a grave(LZ) for yourself(MA) here,
hewing your grave on the height
    and chiseling your resting place in the rock?

17 “Beware, the Lord is about to take firm hold of you
    and hurl(MB) you away, you mighty man.
18 He will roll you up tightly like a ball
    and throw(MC) you into a large country.
There you will die
    and there the chariots(MD) you were so proud of
    will become a disgrace to your master’s house.
19 I will depose you from your office,
    and you will be ousted(ME) from your position.(MF)

20 “In that day(MG) I will summon my servant,(MH) Eliakim(MI) son of Hilkiah. 21 I will clothe him with your robe and fasten your sash(MJ) around him and hand your authority(MK) over to him. He will be a father to those who live in Jerusalem and to the people of Judah. 22 I will place on his shoulder(ML) the key(MM) to the house of David;(MN) what he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open.(MO) 23 I will drive him like a peg(MP) into a firm place;(MQ) he will become a seat[m] of honor(MR) for the house of his father.
