An Oracle Concerning Tyre

23 The [a]oracle concerning (A)Tyre.

Wail, O (B)ships of (C)Tarshish,
For Tyre is destroyed, without house or [b](D)harbor;
It is revealed to them from the land of [c](E)Cyprus.
(F)Be silent, you inhabitants of the coastland,
You merchants of Sidon;
[d]Your messengers crossed the sea
And were on many waters.
(G)The [e]grain of [f](H)Shihor, the harvest of the Nile was her revenue;
And she was the nations’ (I)gain.
Be ashamed, O (J)Sidon;
For the sea speaks, the strong defense of the sea, saying,
“I have neither travailed nor given birth;
I have neither brought up choice men nor reared virgins.”
When the report reaches Egypt,
They will be in (K)travail at the report of Tyre.
Pass over to (L)Tarshish;
Wail, O inhabitants of the coastland.
Is this your (M)exultant city,
Whose origin is from days of old,
Whose feet used to lead her to sojourn in distant places?

Who has counseled this against Tyre, (N)the bestower of crowns,
Whose merchants were princes, whose traders were the honored of the earth?
(O)Yahweh of hosts has counseled it, to (P)defile the pride of all beauty,
To make contemptuous all the (Q)honored of the earth.
10 [g]Overflow your land like the Nile, O daughter of Tarshish;
There is no more [h]restraint.
11 He has (R)stretched His hand out (S)over the sea;
He has (T)made the kingdoms tremble;
Yahweh has given a command concerning Canaan to (U)demolish its strong defenses.

12 So He said, “(V)You shall exult no more, O crushed virgin daughter of Sidon.
Arise, pass over to [i](W)Cyprus; even there you will find no rest.”

13 Behold, the land of the Chaldeans—this is the people which was not; (X)Assyria established it for (Y)desert creatures—they erected their siege towers, they stripped its palaces, (Z)they made it a ruin.

14 Wail, O (AA)ships of Tarshish,
For your strong defense is destroyed.

15 Now it will be in that day, that Tyre will be forgotten for (AB)seventy years like the days of one king. At the end of seventy years it will happen to Tyre as in the song of the harlot:

16 Take your harp, walk about the city,
O forgotten harlot;
Pluck the strings skillfully, sing many songs,
That you may be remembered.

17 And it will be at (AC)the end of seventy years that Yahweh will visit Tyre. Then she will go back to her harlot’s wages and will (AD)play the harlot with all the kingdoms [j]on the face of the earth. 18 And her (AE)gain and her harlot’s wages will be (AF)set apart to Yahweh; it will not be treasured up or hoarded, but her gain will become sufficient food and choice attire for those who inhabit the presence of Yahweh.

Prophesy Against Tyre

26 Now it happened in the eleventh year, on the first of the month, that the word of Yahweh came to me saying, “Son of man, because (A)Tyre has said concerning Jerusalem, ‘Aha, the (B)gateway of the peoples is broken; it has [a](C)opened to me. I shall be filled, now that she is laid waste,’ therefore thus says Lord Yahweh, ‘Behold, I am against you, O Tyre, and I will bring up (D)many nations against you, as the (E)sea brings up its waves. They will (F)make the walls of Tyre a ruin and pull down her towers; and I will scrape her dust from her and make her a bare rock. She will be a place for the spreading of nets in the midst of the sea, for I have spoken,’ declares Lord Yahweh, ‘and she will become (G)plunder for the nations. Also her (H)daughters who are [b]on the mainland will be killed by the sword, and they will know that I am Yahweh.’”

For thus says Lord Yahweh, “Behold, I will bring upon Tyre from the north Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, (I)king of kings, with horses, (J)chariots, horsemen, and an assembly, a great number of people. He will kill your daughters [c]on the mainland with the sword; and he will make (K)siege walls against you, cast up a (L)ramp against you, and raise up a large shield against you. The blow of his battering rams he will direct against your walls, and with his swords he will tear down your towers. 10 Because of the abundance of his (M)horses, the fine dust raised by them will cover you; your walls will (N)shake at the noise of horsemen and [d]wagons and chariots when he (O)enters your gates as men enter a city that is breached. 11 With the hoofs of his (P)horses he will trample all your streets. He will kill your people with the sword; and your strong pillars will (Q)come down to the ground. 12 Also they will make a spoil of your wealth and a plunder of your (R)merchandise, and (S)pull down your walls and tear down your (T)desirable houses, and [e]throw your stones and your timbers and your debris (U)into the water. 13 So I will cause the tumult of your (V)songs to cease, and the sound of your (W)harps will be heard no more. 14 I will make you a bare rock; you will be a place for the spreading of nets. You will be (X)built no more, for I (Y)Yahweh have spoken,” declares Lord Yahweh.

15 Thus says Lord Yahweh to Tyre, “Shall not the (Z)coastlands (AA)shake at the sound of your downfall when the wounded groan, when the killing occurs in your midst? 16 Then all the princes of the sea will (AB)go down from their thrones, remove their robes, and strip off their embroidered garments. They will (AC)clothe themselves with [f]trembling; they will sit on the ground, (AD)tremble every moment, and be appalled at you. 17 They will take up a (AE)lamentation over you and say to you,

(AF)How you have perished, O inhabited one,
From the seas, O city that was praised,
Which was (AG)strong on the sea,
She and her inhabitants,
Who [g]imposed [h]her terror
On all her inhabitants!
18 Now the (AH)coastlands will tremble
On the day of your downfall;
Yes, the coastlands which are by the sea
Will be dismayed at your (AI)departure.’”

19 For thus says Lord Yahweh, “When I make you a city laid waste, like the cities which are not inhabited, when I (AJ)bring up the deep over you and the great waters cover you, 20 then I will bring you down with those who (AK)go down to the pit, to the people of old, and I will make you inhabit the (AL)lower parts of the earth, like the ancient waste places, with those who go down to the pit, so that you will not [i]be inhabited; but I will set (AM)glory in the land of the living. 21 I will [j]bring (AN)terrors on you, and you will be no more; though you will be sought, (AO)you will never be found again,” declares Lord Yahweh.

Lament over Tyre

27 Moreover, the word of Yahweh came to me saying, “Now as for you, son of man, (AP)take up a lamentation over Tyre and say to Tyre, (AQ)who inhabits the [k]entrance to the sea, a (AR)trader of the peoples to many coastlands, ‘Thus says Lord Yahweh,

“O Tyre, you have said, ‘I am perfect in beauty.’
Your borders are in the heart of the seas;
Your builders have perfected your beauty.
They have [l]made all your planks of fir trees from (AS)Senir;
They have taken a cedar from Lebanon to make a mast for you.
Of (AT)oaks from (AU)Bashan they have made your oars;
With ivory they have [m]inlaid your deck of boxwood from the coastlands of (AV)Cyprus.
Your [n]sail was of fine embroidered linen from Egypt
So that it became your [o]standard;
Your [p]awning was [q](AW)blue and purple from the coastlands of (AX)Elishah.
The inhabitants of Sidon and (AY)Arvad were your rowers;
Your (AZ)wise men, O Tyre, were [r]aboard; they were your pilots.
The elders of (BA)Gebal and her wise men were with you repairing your seams;
All the ships of the sea and their sailors were with you in order to deal in your merchandise.

10 (BB)Persia and (BC)Lud and (BD)Put were in your military force, your men of war. They hung shield and helmet in you; they set forth your majesty. 11 The sons of Arvad and your military force were on your walls, all around, and the [s]Gammadim were in your towers. They hung their small shields on your walls all around; they perfected your beauty.

12 “Tarshish was your customer because of the abundance of all kinds of wealth; with silver, iron, tin, and lead they paid for your wares. 13 (BE)Javan, (BF)Tubal, and (BG)Meshech, they were your traders; with the (BH)lives of men and vessels of bronze they paid for your merchandise. 14 Those from (BI)Beth-togarmah gave horses and war horses and mules for your wares. 15 The sons of (BJ)Dedan were your traders. Many coastlands were [t]customers at your hand; (BK)ivory tusks and ebony they brought as your payment. 16 (BL)Aram was your customer because of the abundance of your [u]goods; they paid for your wares with (BM)emeralds, purple, (BN)embroidered work, fine linen, coral, and rubies. 17 Judah and the land of Israel, they were your traders; with the wheat of (BO)Minnith, [v]cakes, honey, oil, and balm they paid for your merchandise. 18 (BP)Damascus was your customer because of the abundance of your [w]goods, because of the abundance of all kinds of wealth, because of the wine of Helbon and white wool. 19 Also Vedan and Javan paid for your wares [x]from Uzal; wrought iron, cassia, and [y]sweet cane were among your merchandise. 20 (BQ)Dedan traded with you in saddlecloths for riding. 21 (BR)Arabia and all the princes of Kedar, they were [z]customers at your hand for (BS)lambs, rams, and goats; for these, they were your customers. 22 The traders of (BT)Sheba and Raamah, they traded with you; they paid for your wares with the best of all kinds of (BU)spices and with all kinds of precious stones and gold. 23 Haran, Canneh, (BV)Eden, the traders of Sheba, Asshur, and Chilmad traded with you. 24 They traded with you in choice garments, in clothes of [aa]blue and embroidered work, and in carpets of many colors and tightly wound cords, which were among your merchandise. 25 The (BW)ships of Tarshish were [ab]the carriers for your merchandise.

And you were filled and were very [ac]glorious
In the heart of the seas.

26 “Your rowers have brought you
Into (BX)great waters;
The (BY)east wind has broken you
In the heart of the seas.
27 Your wealth, your wares, your merchandise,
Your sailors and your pilots,
Your repairers of seams, your dealers in merchandise,
And all your men of war who are in you,
With all your assembly that is in your midst,
Will fall into the heart of the seas
On the day of your downfall.
28 At the sound of the cry of your pilots
The pasture lands will (BZ)shake.
29 All who handle the oar,
The (CA)sailors and all the pilots of the sea,
Will come down from their ships;
They will stand on the land,
30 And they will (CB)make their voice heard over you
And will cry bitterly.
They will (CC)cast dust on their heads;
They will (CD)wallow in ashes.
31 Also they will make themselves (CE)bald for you
And (CF)gird themselves with sackcloth;
And they will (CG)weep for you in bitterness of soul
With bitter mourning.
32 Moreover, in their wailing they will take up a (CH)lamentation for you
And lament over you:
‘Who is like Tyre,
Like her who is silent in the midst of the sea?
33 When your wares went out from the seas,
You satisfied a great number of peoples;
With the (CI)greatness of your wealth and your merchandise
You enriched the kings of earth.
34 [ad]Now that you are (CJ)broken by the seas
In the depths of the waters,
Your (CK)merchandise and all your assembly
Have fallen in the midst of you.
35 All the (CL)inhabitants of the coastlands
Are appalled at you,
And their kings are horribly horrified;
They are troubled in countenance.
36 The merchants among the peoples (CM)hiss at you;
You have become [ae]terrified,
And you (CN)will cease to be forever.’”’”

Prophesy Against the King of Tyre

28 The word of Yahweh came again to me, saying, “Son of man, say to the ruler of Tyre, ‘Thus says Lord Yahweh,

“Because your heart is lofty
And you have said, ‘(CO)I am a god;
I sit enthroned in the seat of [af]gods
In the heart of the seas’;
Yet you are a (CP)man and not God,
Although you make your heart like the heart of God—
Behold, you are wiser than (CQ)Daniel;
There is no secret that is a match for you.
By your wisdom and understanding
You have acquired (CR)wealth for yourself
And have acquired gold and silver for your treasuries.
By your great wisdom, by your (CS)trade
You have increased your wealth,
And your (CT)heart is lofty because of your wealth—

Therefore thus says Lord Yahweh,

‘Because you have (CU)made your heart
Like the heart of God,
Therefore, behold, I will bring (CV)strangers upon you,
The (CW)most ruthless of the nations.
And they will draw their swords
Against the beauty of your wisdom
And defile your splendor.
They will bring you down to the pit,
And you will die the (CX)death of those who are slain
In the heart of the seas.
Will you still say, “I am a god,”
In the presence of the one who kills you,
Though you are a man and not God,
In the hands of those who slay you?
10 You will die the death of the (CY)uncircumcised
By the hand of strangers,
For I have spoken!’ declares Lord Yahweh!”’”

Lament over the King of Tyre

11 Again the word of Yahweh came to me saying, 12 “Son of man, (CZ)take up a lamentation over the king of Tyre and say to him, ‘Thus says Lord Yahweh,

“You [ag]had the seal of perfection,
Full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.
13 You were in (DA)Eden, the garden of God;
(DB)Every precious stone was your covering:
The (DC)ruby, the topaz, and the diamond;
The beryl, the onyx, and the jasper;
The [ah]lapis lazuli, the turquoise, and the emerald;
And the gold, the workmanship of your [ai](DD)settings and [aj]sockets,
Was in you.
On the day that you were created
They were prepared.
14 You were the (DE)anointed cherub who [ak]covers,
And I placed you there.
You were on the holy (DF)mountain of God;
You walked in the midst of the (DG)stones of fire.
15 You were (DH)blameless in your ways
From the day you were created
Until (DI)unrighteousness was found in you.
16 By the (DJ)abundance of your trade
[al]You were internally (DK)filled with violence,
And you sinned;
Therefore I have cast you as profane
From the mountain of God.
And I have destroyed you, O [am]covering cherub,
From the midst of the stones of fire.
17 Your heart was lofty because of your (DL)beauty;
You (DM)corrupted your wisdom by reason of your splendor.
I cast you to the ground;
I put you before (DN)kings,
That they may see you.
18 By the abundance of your iniquities,
In the unrighteousness of your trade
You profaned your sanctuaries.
Therefore I have brought out (DO)fire from the midst of you;
It has consumed you,
And I have turned you to (DP)ashes on the earth
In the eyes of all who see you.
19 All who know you among the peoples
Are appalled at you;
You have become [an](DQ)terrified,
And you will cease to be (DR)forever.”’”

Prophesy Against Sidon

20 And the word of Yahweh came to me saying, 21 “Son of man, (DS)set your face toward (DT)Sidon, prophesy against her 22 and say, ‘Thus says Lord Yahweh,

“Behold, I am against you, O Sidon,
And I will [ao]be glorified in your midst.
Then they will know that I am Yahweh when I (DU)execute judgments in her,
And I will manifest My holiness in her.
23 For (DV)I will send pestilence to her
And blood to her streets,
And the (DW)wounded will [ap]fall in her midst
By the sword upon her on every side;
Then they will know that I am Yahweh.

24 And there will be no more for the house of Israel a (DX)prickling brier or a painful thorn from any round about them who scorned them; then they will know that I am Lord Yahweh.”

Israel Regathered

25 ‘Thus says Lord Yahweh, “When I (DY)gather the house of Israel from the peoples, among whom they are scattered, and will manifest My holiness in them in the sight of the nations, then they will (DZ)live in their [aq]land which I gave to My servant Jacob. 26 They will (EA)live in it securely; and they will (EB)build houses, plant vineyards, and live securely when I (EC)execute judgments upon all who scorn them all around them. Then they will know that I am Yahweh their God.”’”

Since you have (D)taken My silver and My gold, brought My desirable [a]treasures to your temples, and sold the (E)sons of Judah and the sons of Jerusalem to the sons of the [b]Greeks in order to remove them far from their borders, behold, I am going to (F)rouse them from the place where you have sold them and return your recompense on your head.
