The Righteous Reign of the Branch

11 There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of (A)Jesse,
    and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit.
And (B)the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him,
    the Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
    the Spirit of counsel and might,
    the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.
And his delight shall be in the fear of the Lord.
(C)He shall not judge by (D)what his eyes see,
    or decide disputes by (E)what his ears hear,
but (F)with righteousness he shall judge the poor,
    and decide with equity for the meek of the earth;
and he shall (G)strike the earth with the rod of his mouth,
    and (H)with the breath of his lips (I)he shall kill the wicked.
Righteousness shall be the belt of his waist,
    and (J)faithfulness the belt of his loins.

(K)The wolf shall dwell with the lamb,
    and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat,
and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together;
    and a little child shall lead them.
The cow and the bear shall graze;
    their young shall lie down together;
    and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.
The nursing child shall play over the hole of the cobra,
    and the weaned child shall put his hand on the adder's den.
(L)They shall not hurt or destroy
    in all (M)my holy mountain;
(N)for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord
    as the waters cover the sea.

10 In that day (O)the root of (P)Jesse, who shall stand as (Q)a signal for the peoples—of him shall the nations inquire, and his resting place shall be glorious.

11 (R)In that day the Lord will extend his hand yet a second time to recover the remnant that remains of his people, (S)from Assyria, (T)from Egypt, from (U)Pathros, from (V)Cush,[a] from (W)Elam, from (X)Shinar, from (Y)Hamath, and from (Z)the coastlands of the sea.

12 He will raise (AA)a signal for the nations
    and will assemble (AB)the banished of Israel,
and gather the dispersed of Judah
    from the four corners of the earth.
13 (AC)The jealousy of Ephraim shall depart,
    and those who harass Judah shall be cut off;
Ephraim shall not be jealous of Judah,
    and Judah shall not harass Ephraim.
14 (AD)But they shall swoop down on the shoulder of the Philistines in the west,
    and together they shall plunder (AE)the people of the east.
They shall put out their hand (AF)against (AG)Edom and (AH)Moab,
    and (AI)the Ammonites shall obey them.
15 And the Lord will utterly destroy[b]
    (AJ)the tongue of the Sea of Egypt,
and will wave his hand over (AK)the River[c]
    with his scorching breath,[d]
and strike it into seven channels,
    and he will lead people across in sandals.
16 And there will be (AL)a highway from Assyria
    for the remnant that remains of his people,
(AM)as there was for Israel
    when they came up from the land of Egypt.

The Lord Is My Strength and My Song

12 You[e] will say (AN)in that day:
“I will give thanks to you, O Lord,
    for though you were angry with me,
(AO)your anger turned away,
    that you might comfort me.

“Behold, God is my salvation;
    I will trust, and will not be afraid;
for (AP)the Lord God[f] is my strength and my song,
    and he has become my salvation.”

(AQ)With joy you[g] will draw water from the wells of salvation. (AR)And you will say in that day:

(AS)“Give thanks to the Lord,
    call upon his name,
(AT)make known his deeds among the peoples,
    proclaim (AU)that his name is exalted.

(AV)“Sing praises to the Lord, for he has done gloriously;
    let this be made known[h] in all the earth.
Shout, and sing for joy, O inhabitant of Zion,
    for great (AW)in your[i] midst is (AX)the Holy One of Israel.”

The Judgment of Babylon

13 The oracle concerning (AY)Babylon which (AZ)Isaiah the son of Amoz saw.

On a bare hill (BA)raise a signal;
    cry aloud to them;
wave the hand for (BB)them to enter
    the gates of the nobles.
I myself have commanded my consecrated ones,
    and have summoned my mighty men to execute my anger,
    my proudly exulting ones.[j]

The sound (BC)of a tumult is on the mountains
    as of a great multitude!
The sound of an uproar of kingdoms,
    of nations gathering together!
(BD)The Lord of hosts is mustering
    a host for battle.
(BE)They come from a distant land,
    from the end of the heavens,
the Lord and the weapons of his indignation,
    to destroy the whole land.[k]

(BF)Wail, for (BG)the day of the Lord is near;
    as destruction from the Almighty[l] it will come!
Therefore all hands will be feeble,
    and every human heart (BH)will melt.
They will be dismayed:
    (BI)pangs and agony will seize them;
    (BJ)they will be in anguish like a woman in labor.
They will look aghast at one another;
    their faces will be aflame.

Behold, (BK)the day of the Lord comes,
    cruel, with wrath and fierce anger,
to make the land a desolation
    and (BL)to destroy its sinners from it.
10 (BM)For the stars of the heavens and their constellations
    will not give their light;
(BN)the sun will be dark at its rising,
    and the moon will not shed its light.
11 I will punish (BO)the world for its evil,
    and the wicked for their iniquity;
I will (BP)put an end to the pomp of the arrogant,
    (BQ)and lay low the pompous pride of the ruthless.
12 I will make (BR)people more rare than fine gold,
    and mankind than the (BS)gold of Ophir.
13 Therefore (BT)I will make the heavens tremble,
    and the earth will be shaken out of its place,
at the wrath of the Lord of hosts
    in the day of his fierce anger.
14 And like a hunted gazelle,
    or like sheep with none to gather them,
(BU)each will turn to his own people,
    and each will flee to his own land.
15 Whoever is found will be thrust through,
    and whoever is caught will fall by the sword.
16 (BV)Their infants will be dashed in pieces
    before their eyes;
their houses will be plundered
    and their wives ravished.

17 Behold, (BW)I am stirring up the Medes against them,
    who have no regard for silver
    and do not delight in gold.
18 (BX)Their bows will slaughter[m] the young men;
    they will have no mercy on the fruit of the womb;
    their eyes will not pity children.
19 And Babylon, (BY)the glory of kingdoms,
    the splendor and pomp of the Chaldeans,
will be (BZ)like Sodom and Gomorrah
    when God overthrew them.
20 (CA)It will never be inhabited
    or lived in for all generations;
no (CB)Arab will pitch his tent there;
    no (CC)shepherds will make their flocks lie down there.
21 But (CD)wild animals will lie down there,
    and their houses will be full of howling creatures;
there (CE)ostriches[n] will dwell,
    and there wild goats will dance.
22 Hyenas[o] will cry in its towers,
    and (CF)jackals in (CG)the pleasant palaces;
its time is close at hand
    and its days will not be prolonged.

The Restoration of Jacob

14 (CH)For the Lord will have compassion on Jacob and will again choose Israel, and (CI)will set them in their own land, and (CJ)sojourners will join them and will attach themselves to the house of Jacob. And (CK)the peoples will take them and bring them to their place, and the house of Israel will possess them in the Lord's land (CL)as male and female slaves.[p] (CM)They will take captive those who were their captors, (CN)and rule over those who oppressed them.

Israel's Remnant Taunts Babylon

When the Lord has given you rest from your pain and turmoil and the hard service with which you were made to serve, you will take up this (CO)taunt against the king of Babylon:

“How the oppressor has ceased,
    (CP)the insolent fury[q] ceased!
The Lord has broken the (CQ)staff of the wicked,
    the (CR)scepter of rulers,
(CS)that struck the peoples in wrath
    with unceasing blows,
that ruled the nations in anger
    with unrelenting persecution.
The whole earth is at rest and quiet;
    (CT)they break forth into singing.
(CU)(CV)The cypresses rejoice at you,
    (CW)the cedars of Lebanon, saying,
‘Since you were laid low,
    no woodcutter comes up against us.’
Sheol beneath is stirred up
    to meet you when you come;
it rouses the shades to greet you,
    all who were leaders of the earth;
it raises from their thrones
    all who were kings of the nations.
10 (CX)All of them will answer
    and say to you:
‘You too have become as weak as we!
    You have become like us!’
11 Your pomp is brought down to Sheol,
    the sound of your harps;
maggots are laid as a bed beneath you,
    and worms are your covers.

12 “How (CY)you are fallen from heaven,
    O Day Star, (CZ)son of Dawn!
How you are cut down to the ground,
    you who laid the nations low!
13 You said in your heart,
    (DA)‘I will ascend to heaven;
above the stars of God
    (DB)I will set my throne on high;
I will sit on the mount of assembly
    in the far reaches of the north;[r]
14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds;
    I will make myself like the Most High.’
15 (DC)But you are brought down to Sheol,
    to the far reaches of the pit.
16 Those who see you will stare at you
    and ponder over you:
‘Is this (DD)the man who made the earth tremble,
    who shook kingdoms,
17 who made the world like a desert
    and overthrew its cities,
    (DE)who did not let his prisoners go home?’
18 All the kings of the nations lie in glory,
    each in his own tomb;[s]
19 but you are cast out, away from your grave,
    like a loathed branch,
(DF)clothed with the slain, those pierced by the sword,
    who go down to the stones of the pit,
    like a dead body trampled underfoot.
20 You will not be joined with them in burial,
    because you have destroyed your land,
    you have slain your people.

“May (DG)the offspring of evildoers
    nevermore be named!
21 Prepare slaughter for his sons
    (DH)because of the guilt of their fathers,
lest they rise and possess the earth,
    and fill the face of the world with cities.”

22 “I will rise up against them,” declares the Lord of hosts, “and will cut off from Babylon name and (DI)remnant, (DJ)descendants and posterity,” declares the Lord. 23 “And I will make it a possession of the (DK)hedgehog,[t] and pools of water, and I will sweep it with the broom of destruction,” declares the Lord of hosts.

An Oracle Concerning Assyria

24 The Lord of hosts has sworn:
(DL)“As I have planned,
    so shall it be,
and as I have purposed,
    so shall it stand,
25 that (DM)I will break the Assyrian in my land,
    and on my mountains trample him underfoot;
and (DN)his yoke shall depart from them,
    and (DO)his burden from their shoulder.”

26 This is the purpose that is purposed
    concerning the whole earth,
and this is (DP)the hand that is stretched out
    over all the nations.
27 (DQ)For the Lord of hosts has purposed,
    and who will annul it?
(DR)His hand is stretched out,
    and who will turn it back?

An Oracle Concerning Philistia

28 In the year that (DS)King Ahaz died came this (DT)oracle:

29 Rejoice not, (DU)O Philistia, all of you,
    that (DV)the rod that struck you is broken,
for from the serpent's root will come forth an adder,
    and its fruit will be a (DW)flying fiery serpent.
30 And the firstborn of (DX)the poor will graze,
    and (DY)the needy lie down in safety;
but I will kill your root with famine,
    and your remnant it will slay.
31 (DZ)Wail, O (EA)gate; cry out, O city;
    melt in fear, (EB)O Philistia, all of you!
(EC)For smoke comes out of the north,
    and there is no straggler in his ranks.

32 What will one answer the messengers of the nation?
(ED)“The Lord has founded Zion,
    and in her the afflicted of his people find refuge.”

A Prophecy Against Babylon

13 A prophecy(CK) against Babylon(CL) that Isaiah son of Amoz(CM) saw:(CN)

Raise a banner(CO) on a bare hilltop,
    shout to them;
beckon to them
    to enter the gates(CP) of the nobles.
I have commanded those I prepared for battle;
    I have summoned my warriors(CQ) to carry out my wrath(CR)
    those who rejoice(CS) in my triumph.

Listen, a noise on the mountains,
    like that of a great multitude!(CT)
Listen, an uproar(CU) among the kingdoms,
    like nations massing together!
The Lord Almighty(CV) is mustering(CW)
    an army for war.
They come from faraway lands,
    from the ends of the heavens(CX)
the Lord and the weapons(CY) of his wrath(CZ)
    to destroy(DA) the whole country.

Wail,(DB) for the day(DC) of the Lord is near;
    it will come like destruction(DD) from the Almighty.[f](DE)
Because of this, all hands will go limp,(DF)
    every heart will melt with fear.(DG)
Terror(DH) will seize them,
    pain and anguish will grip(DI) them;
    they will writhe like a woman in labor.(DJ)
They will look aghast at each other,
    their faces aflame.(DK)

See, the day(DL) of the Lord is coming
    —a cruel(DM) day, with wrath(DN) and fierce anger(DO)
to make the land desolate
    and destroy the sinners within it.
10 The stars of heaven and their constellations
    will not show their light.(DP)
The rising sun(DQ) will be darkened(DR)
    and the moon will not give its light.(DS)
11 I will punish(DT) the world for its evil,
    the wicked(DU) for their sins.
I will put an end to the arrogance of the haughty(DV)
    and will humble(DW) the pride of the ruthless.(DX)
12 I will make people(DY) scarcer than pure gold,
    more rare than the gold of Ophir.(DZ)
13 Therefore I will make the heavens tremble;(EA)
    and the earth will shake(EB) from its place
at the wrath(EC) of the Lord Almighty,
    in the day of his burning anger.(ED)

14 Like a hunted(EE) gazelle,
    like sheep without a shepherd,(EF)
they will all return to their own people,
    they will flee(EG) to their native land.(EH)
15 Whoever is captured will be thrust through;
    all who are caught will fall(EI) by the sword.(EJ)
16 Their infants(EK) will be dashed to pieces before their eyes;
    their houses will be looted and their wives violated.(EL)

17 See, I will stir up(EM) against them the Medes,(EN)
    who do not care for silver

    they will have no mercy(ER) on infants,

    or lived in through all generations;
there no nomads(EZ) will pitch their tents,
    there no shepherds will rest their flocks.
21 But desert creatures(FA) will lie there,
    jackals(FB) will fill her houses;
there the owls(FC) will dwell,
    and there the wild goats(FD) will leap about.
22 Hyenas(FE) will inhabit her strongholds,(FF)
    jackals(FG) her luxurious palaces.
Her time is at hand,(FH)
    and her days will not be prolonged.(FI)

14 The Lord will have compassion(FJ) on Jacob;
    once again he will choose(FK) Israel
    and will settle them in their own land.(FL)
Foreigners(FM) will join them
    and unite with the descendants of Jacob.
Nations will take them
    and bring(FN) them to their own place.
And Israel will take possession of the nations(FO)
    and make them male and female servants in the Lord’s land.
They will make captives(FP) of their captors
    and rule over their oppressors.(FQ)

On the day the Lord gives you relief(FR) from your suffering and turmoil(FS) and from the harsh labor forced on you,(FT) you will take up this taunt(FU) against the king of Babylon:(FV)

How the oppressor(FW) has come to an end!
    How his fury[h] has ended!
The Lord has broken the rod(FX) of the wicked,(FY)
    the scepter(FZ) of the rulers,
which in anger struck down peoples(GA)
    with unceasing blows,
and in fury subdued(GB) nations
    with relentless aggression.(GC)
All the lands are at rest and at peace;(GD)
    they break into singing.(GE)
Even the junipers(GF) and the cedars of Lebanon
    gloat over you and say,
“Now that you have been laid low,
    no one comes to cut us down.”(GG)

The realm of the dead(GH) below is all astir
    to meet you at your coming;
it rouses the spirits of the departed(GI) to greet you—
    all those who were leaders(GJ) in the world;
it makes them rise from their thrones—
    all those who were kings over the nations.(GK)
10 They will all respond,
    they will say to you,
“You also have become weak, as we are;
    you have become like us.”(GL)
11 All your pomp has been brought down to the grave,(GM)
    along with the noise of your harps;(GN)
maggots are spread out beneath you
    and worms(GO) cover you.(GP)

12 How you have fallen(GQ) from heaven,
    morning star,(GR) son of the dawn!
You have been cast down to the earth,
    you who once laid low the nations!(GS)
13 You said in your heart,
    “I will ascend(GT) to the heavens;
I will raise my throne(GU)
    above the stars of God;
I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly,(GV)
    on the utmost heights(GW) of Mount Zaphon.[i]
14 I will ascend above the tops of the clouds;(GX)
    I will make myself like the Most High.”(GY)
15 But you are brought down(GZ) to the realm of the dead,(HA)
    to the depths(HB) of the pit.(HC)

16 Those who see you stare at you,
    they ponder your fate:(HD)
“Is this the man who shook(HE) the earth
    and made kingdoms tremble,
17 the man who made the world a wilderness,(HF)
    who overthrew(HG) its cities
    and would not let his captives go home?”(HH)

18 All the kings of the nations lie in state,
    each in his own tomb.(HI)
19 But you are cast out(HJ) of your tomb
    like a rejected branch;
you are covered with the slain,(HK)
    with those pierced by the sword,(HL)
    those who descend to the stones of the pit.(HM)
Like a corpse trampled underfoot,
20     you will not join them in burial,(HN)
for you have destroyed your land
    and killed your people.

Let the offspring(HO) of the wicked(HP)
    never be mentioned(HQ) again.
21 Prepare a place to slaughter his children(HR)
    for the sins of their ancestors;(HS)
they are not to rise to inherit the land
    and cover the earth with their cities.

22 “I will rise up(HT) against them,”
    declares the Lord Almighty.
“I will wipe out Babylon’s name(HU) and survivors,
    her offspring and descendants,(HV)
declares the Lord.
23 “I will turn her into a place for owls(HW)
    and into swampland;
I will sweep her with the broom of destruction,(HX)
    declares the Lord Almighty.(HY)

24 The Lord Almighty has sworn,(HZ)

“Surely, as I have planned,(IA) so it will be,
    and as I have purposed, so it will happen.(IB)
25 I will crush the Assyrian(IC) in my land;
    on my mountains I will trample him down.
His yoke(ID) will be taken from my people,
    and his burden removed from their shoulders.(IE)

26 This is the plan(IF) determined for the whole world;
    this is the hand(IG) stretched out over all nations.
27 For the Lord Almighty has purposed,(IH) and who can thwart him?
    His hand(II) is stretched out, and who can turn it back?(IJ)

A Prophecy Against the Philistines

28 This prophecy(IK) came in the year(IL) King Ahaz(IM) died:

29 Do not rejoice, all you Philistines,(IN)
    that the rod that struck you is broken;
from the root of that snake will spring up a viper,(IO)
    its fruit will be a darting, venomous serpent.(IP)
30 The poorest of the poor will find pasture,
    and the needy(IQ) will lie down in safety.(IR)
But your root I will destroy by famine;(IS)
    it will slay(IT) your survivors.(IU)

31 Wail,(IV) you gate!(IW) Howl, you city!
    Melt away, all you Philistines!(IX)
A cloud of smoke comes from the north,(IY)
    and there is not a straggler in its ranks.(IZ)
32 What answer shall be given
    to the envoys(JA) of that nation?
“The Lord has established Zion,(JB)
    and in her his afflicted people will find refuge.(JC)

The Earthly Holy Place

Now even the first covenant had regulations for worship and (A)an earthly place of holiness. For (B)a tent[a] was prepared, the first section, in which were (C)the lampstand and (D)the table and (E)the bread of the Presence.[b] It is called the Holy Place. Behind (F)the second curtain was a second section[c] called the Most Holy Place, having the golden (G)altar of incense and (H)the ark of the covenant covered on all sides with gold, in which was (I)a golden urn holding the manna, and (J)Aaron's staff that budded, and (K)the tablets of the covenant. Above it were (L)the cherubim of glory overshadowing (M)the mercy seat. Of these things we cannot now speak in detail.

These preparations having thus been made, (N)the priests go regularly into the first section, performing their ritual duties, but into the second only (O)the high priest goes, and he but (P)once a year, and not without taking blood, (Q)which he offers for himself and for the unintentional sins of the people. By this the Holy Spirit indicates that (R)the way into the holy places is not yet opened as long as the first section is still standing (which is symbolic for the present age).[d] According to this arrangement, gifts and sacrifices are offered (S)that cannot perfect the conscience of the worshiper, 10 but deal only with (T)food and drink and (U)various washings, regulations for the body imposed until the time of reformation.

Redemption Through the Blood of Christ

11 But when Christ appeared as a high priest (V)of the good things that have come,[e] then through (W)the greater and more perfect tent ((X)not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) 12 he (Y)entered (Z)once for all into the holy places, not by means of (AA)the blood of goats and calves but (AB)by means of his own blood, (AC)thus securing an eternal redemption. 13 For if (AD)the blood of goats and bulls, and the sprinkling of defiled persons with (AE)the ashes of a heifer, sanctify[f] for the purification of the flesh, 14 how much more will (AF)the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit (AG)offered himself without blemish to God, (AH)purify our[g] conscience (AI)from dead works (AJ)to serve the living God.

15 Therefore he is (AK)the mediator of a new covenant, so that (AL)those who are called may (AM)receive the promised eternal inheritance, (AN)since a death has occurred that redeems them from the transgressions committed under the first covenant.[h] 16 For where a will is involved, the death of the one who made it must be established. 17 For (AO)a will takes effect only at death, since it is not in force as long as the one who made it is alive. 18 Therefore not even the first covenant was inaugurated (AP)without blood. 19 For when every commandment of the law had been declared by Moses to all the people, he took (AQ)the blood of calves and goats, (AR)with water and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people, 20 saying, (AS)“This is the blood of the covenant that God commanded for you.” 21 And in the same way he sprinkled with the blood both (AT)the tent and all the vessels used in worship. 22 Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and (AU)without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.

23 Thus it was necessary for (AV)the copies of the heavenly things to be purified with these rites, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. 24 For Christ has entered, not into holy places (AW)made with hands, which are copies of the true things, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God (AX)on our behalf. 25 Nor was it to offer himself repeatedly, as (AY)the high priest enters (AZ)the holy places every year with blood not his own, 26 for then he would have had to suffer repeatedly since the foundation of the world. But as it is, (BA)he has appeared (BB)once for all (BC)at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. 27 And just as (BD)it is appointed for man to die once, and (BE)after that comes judgment, 28 so Christ, having been offered once (BF)to bear the sins of (BG)many, will appear (BH)a second time, (BI)not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly (BJ)waiting for him.

Worship in the Earthly Tabernacle

Now the first covenant had regulations for worship and also an earthly sanctuary.(A) A tabernacle(B) was set up. In its first room were the lampstand(C) and the table(D) with its consecrated bread;(E) this was called the Holy Place.(F) Behind the second curtain was a room called the Most Holy Place,(G) which had the golden altar of incense(H) and the gold-covered ark of the covenant.(I) This ark contained the gold jar of manna,(J) Aaron’s staff that had budded,(K) and the stone tablets of the covenant.(L) Above the ark were the cherubim of the Glory,(M) overshadowing the atonement cover.(N) But we cannot discuss these things in detail now.

When everything had been arranged like this, the priests entered regularly(O) into the outer room to carry on their ministry. But only the high priest entered(P) the inner room,(Q) and that only once a year,(R) and never without blood,(S) which he offered for himself(T) and for the sins the people had committed in ignorance.(U) The Holy Spirit was showing(V) by this that the way(W) into the Most Holy Place had not yet been disclosed as long as the first tabernacle was still functioning. This is an illustration(X) for the present time, indicating that the gifts and sacrifices being offered(Y) were not able to clear the conscience(Z) of the worshiper. 10 They are only a matter of food(AA) and drink(AB) and various ceremonial washings(AC)—external regulations(AD) applying until the time of the new order.

The Blood of Christ

11 But when Christ came as high priest(AE) of the good things that are now already here,[a](AF) he went through the greater and more perfect tabernacle(AG) that is not made with human hands,(AH) that is to say, is not a part of this creation. 12 He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves;(AI) but he entered the Most Holy Place(AJ) once for all(AK) by his own blood,(AL) thus obtaining[b] eternal redemption. 13 The blood of goats and bulls(AM) and the ashes of a heifer(AN) sprinkled on those who are ceremonially unclean sanctify them so that they are outwardly clean. 14 How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit(AO) offered himself(AP) unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences(AQ) from acts that lead to death,[c](AR) so that we may serve the living God!(AS)

15 For this reason Christ is the mediator(AT) of a new covenant,(AU) that those who are called(AV) may receive the promised(AW) eternal inheritance(AX)—now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant.(AY)

16 In the case of a will,[d] it is necessary to prove the death of the one who made it, 17 because a will is in force only when somebody has died; it never takes effect while the one who made it is living. 18 This is why even the first covenant was not put into effect without blood.(AZ) 19 When Moses had proclaimed(BA) every command of the law to all the people, he took the blood of calves,(BB) together with water, scarlet wool and branches of hyssop, and sprinkled the scroll and all the people.(BC) 20 He said, “This is the blood of the covenant, which God has commanded you to keep.”[e](BD) 21 In the same way, he sprinkled with the blood both the tabernacle and everything used in its ceremonies. 22 In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood,(BE) and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.(BF)

23 It was necessary, then, for the copies(BG) of the heavenly things to be purified with these sacrifices, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. 24 For Christ did not enter a sanctuary made with human hands that was only a copy of the true one;(BH) he entered heaven itself,(BI) now to appear for us in God’s presence.(BJ) 25 Nor did he enter heaven to offer himself again and again, the way the high priest enters the Most Holy Place(BK) every year with blood that is not his own.(BL) 26 Otherwise Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world.(BM) But he has appeared(BN) once for all(BO) at the culmination of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself.(BP) 27 Just as people are destined to die once,(BQ) and after that to face judgment,(BR) 28 so Christ was sacrificed once(BS) to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time,(BT) not to bear sin,(BU) but to bring salvation(BV) to those who are waiting for him.(BW)
