² Let me ask you only this: ^(A)Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by ^(B)hearing with faith?

¹⁶ But ^(A)they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, ^(B)“Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?” ¹⁷ So ^(C)faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

¹⁴ so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might ^(A)come to the Gentiles, so that ^(B)we might receive ^(C)the promised Spirit^[a] through faith.

² And he said to them, ^(A)“Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” And they said, “No, ^(B)we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” ³ And he said, ^(C)“Into what then were you baptized?” They said, “Into ^(D)John's baptism.” ⁴ And Paul said, ^(E)“John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people ^(F)to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, Jesus.” ⁵ On hearing this, ^(G)they were baptized in^[a] the name of the Lord Jesus. ⁶ And ^(H)when Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and ^(I)they began speaking in tongues and ^(J)prophesying.

⁸ And God, ^(A)who knows the heart, ^(B)bore witness to them, ^(C)by giving them the Holy Spirit just as he did to us,
