Fate of Ananias and Sapphira

5 But a man named Ananias, with his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property, ² and ^(A)kept back some of the price for himself, with his wife’s ^[a]full knowledge, and bringing a portion of it, he ^(B)laid it at the apostles’ feet. ³ But Peter said, “Ananias, why has ^(C)Satan filled your heart to lie ^(D)to the Holy Spirit and to ^(E)keep back some of the price of the land? ⁴ While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not ^[b]under your control? Why is it that you have ^[c]conceived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to men but ^(F)to God.” ⁵ And as he heard these words, Ananias ^(G)fell down and breathed his last; and ^(H)great fear came over all who heard of it. ⁶ The young men got up and ^(I)covered him up, and after carrying him out, they buried him.

⁷ Now there elapsed an interval of about three hours, and his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. ⁸ And Peter responded to her, “Tell me whether you sold the land ^[d](J)for such and such a price?” And she said, “Yes, ^[e]that was the price.” ⁹ Then Peter said to her, “Why is it that you have agreed together to ^(K)put ^(L)the Spirit of the Lord to the test? Behold, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out as well.” ¹⁰ And immediately she ^(M)fell at his feet and breathed her last, and the young men came in and found her dead, and they carried her out and buried her beside her husband. ¹¹ And ^(N)great fear came over the whole church, and over all who heard of these things.

^12 [f]At the hands of the apostles many ^(O)signs and wonders were taking place among the people; and they were all with one accord in ^(P)Solomon’s portico. ¹³ But none of the rest dared to associate with them; however, ^(Q)the people held them in high esteem. ¹⁴ And all the more ^(R)believers in the Lord, multitudes of men and women, were constantly ^(S)added to their number, ¹⁵ to such an extent that they even carried the sick out into the streets and laid them on cots and pallets, so that when Peter came by ^(T)at least his shadow might fall on any one of them. ¹⁶ Also the ^[g]people from the cities in the vicinity of Jerusalem were coming together, bringing people who were sick ^[h]or afflicted with unclean spirits, and they were all being healed.

Imprisonment and Release

¹⁷ But the high priest rose up, along with all his associates (that is ^(U)the sect of ^(V)the Sadducees), and they were filled with jealousy. ¹⁸ They laid hands on the apostles and ^(W)put them in a public jail. ¹⁹ But during the night ^(X)an angel of the Lord opened the gates of the prison, and taking them out he said, ²⁰ “Go, stand and ^[i]speak to the people in the temple ^[j](Y)the whole message of this Life.” ²¹ Upon hearing this, they entered into the temple ^(Z)about daybreak and began to teach.

Now when ^(AA)the high priest and his associates came, they called ^(AB)the ^[k]Council together, even all the Senate of the sons of Israel, and sent orders to the prison house for them to be brought. ²² But ^(AC)the officers who came did not find them in the prison; and they returned and reported back, ²³ saying, “We found the prison house locked quite securely and the guards standing at the doors; but when we had opened up, we found no one inside.” ²⁴ Now when ^(AD)the captain of the temple guard and the chief priests heard these words, they were greatly perplexed about them as to what ^[l]would come of this. ²⁵ But someone came and reported to them, “The men whom you put in prison are standing in the temple and teaching the people!” ²⁶ Then ^(AE)the captain went along with ^(AF)the officers and proceeded to bring them back without violence (for ^(AG)they were afraid of the people, that they might be stoned).

²⁷ When they had brought them, they stood them ^[m]before ^(AH)the Council. The high priest questioned them, ²⁸ saying, “We gave you ^(AI)strict orders not to continue teaching in this name, and ^[n]yet, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and ^(AJ)intend to bring this man’s blood upon us.” ²⁹ But Peter and the apostles answered, “^(AK)We must obey God rather than men. ^30 (AL)The God of our fathers ^(AM)raised up Jesus, ^[o]whom you had ^(AN)put to death by hanging Him on a ^[p]cross. ^31 (AO)He is the one whom God exalted ^[q]to His right hand as a ^[r](AP)Prince and a ^(AQ)Savior, to grant ^(AR)repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins. ³² And we are ^(AS)witnesses ^[s]of these things; and ^(AT)so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey Him.”

Gamaliel’s Counsel

³³ But when they heard this, they were ^(AU)cut ^[t]to the quick and intended to kill them. ³⁴ But a Pharisee named ^(AV)Gamaliel, a ^(AW)teacher of the Law, respected by all the people, stood up in ^(AX)the Council and gave orders to put the men outside for a short time. ³⁵ And he said to them, “Men of Israel, take care what you propose to do with these men. ³⁶ For some time ago Theudas rose up, ^(AY)claiming to be somebody, and a group of about four hundred men joined up with him. ^[u]But he was killed, and all who ^[v]followed him were dispersed and came to nothing. ³⁷ After this man, Judas of Galilee rose up in the days of ^(AZ)the census and drew away some people after him; he too perished, and all those who ^[w]followed him were scattered. ³⁸ So in the present case, I say to you, stay away from these men and let them alone, for if this plan or ^[x]action ^(BA)is of men, it will be overthrown; ³⁹ but if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them; or else you may even be found ^(BB)fighting against God.”

⁴⁰ They ^[y]took his advice; and after calling the apostles in, they ^(BC)flogged them and ordered them not to ^[z]speak in the name of Jesus, and then released them. ⁴¹ So they went on their way from the presence of the ^[aa](BD)Council, ^(BE)rejoicing that they had been considered worthy to suffer shame ^(BF)for His name. ^42 (BG)And every day, in the temple and ^[ab]from house to house, they ^[ac]kept right on teaching and ^[ad](BH)preaching Jesus as the ^[ae]Christ.

Choosing of the Seven

6 Now ^[af]at this time while the ^(BI)disciples were ^(BJ)increasing in number, a complaint arose on the part of the ^[ag](BK)Hellenistic Jews against the native ^(BL)Hebrews, because their ^(BM)widows were being overlooked in ^(BN)the daily serving of food. ² So the twelve summoned the ^[ah]congregation of the disciples and said, “It is not desirable for us to neglect the word of God in order to serve tables. ³ Therefore, ^(BO)brethren, select from among you seven men of good reputation, ^(BP)full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may put in charge of this task. ⁴ But we will ^(BQ)devote ourselves to prayer and to the ^[ai]ministry of the word.” ⁵ The statement found approval with the whole ^[aj]congregation; and they chose ^(BR)Stephen, a man ^(BS)full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and ^(BT)Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas and ^[ak]Nicolas, a ^[al](BU)proselyte from ^(BV)Antioch. ⁶ And these they brought before the apostles; and after ^(BW)praying, they ^(BX)laid their hands on them.

^7 (BY)The word of God kept on spreading; and ^(BZ)the number of the disciples continued to increase greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests were becoming obedient to ^(CA)the faith.

⁸ And Stephen, full of grace and power, was performing great ^(CB)wonders and ^[am]signs among the people. ⁹ But some men from what was called the Synagogue of the Freedmen, including both ^(CC)Cyrenians and ^(CD)Alexandrians, and some from ^(CE)Cilicia and ^[an](CF)Asia, rose up and argued with Stephen. ¹⁰ But they were unable to cope with the wisdom and the Spirit with which he was speaking. ¹¹ Then they secretly induced men to say, “We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and against God.” ¹² And they stirred up the people, the elders and the scribes, and they ^(CG)came up to him and dragged him away and brought him ^[ao]before ^(CH)the ^[ap]Council. ¹³ They put forward ^(CI)false witnesses who said, “This man incessantly speaks against this ^(CJ)holy place and the Law; ¹⁴ for we have heard him say that ^(CK)this Nazarene, Jesus, will destroy this place and alter ^(CL)the customs which Moses handed down to us.” ¹⁵ And fixing their gaze on him, all who were sitting in the ^[aq](CM)Council saw his face like the face of an angel.

Stephen’s Defense

7 The high priest said, “Are these things so?”

² And he said, “Hear me, ^(CN)brethren and fathers! ^(CO)The God of glory ^(CP)appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he lived in ^[ar]Haran, ³ and said to him, ‘^(CQ)Leave your country and your relatives, and come into the land that I will show you.’ ^4 (CR)Then he left the land of the Chaldeans and settled in ^[as]Haran. ^(CS)From there, after his father died, God had him move to this country in which you are now living. ⁵ But He gave him no inheritance in it, not even a foot of ground, and yet, even when he had no child, ^(CT)He promised that He would give it to him as a possession, and to his descendants after him. ⁶ But ^(CU)God spoke to this effect, that his descendants would be aliens in a foreign land, and that they would ^[at]be enslaved and mistreated for four hundred years. ⁷ ‘And whatever nation to which they will be in bondage I Myself will judge,’ said God, ‘and ^(CV)after that they will come out and ^[au]serve Me in this place.’ ⁸ And He ^(CW)gave him ^[av]the covenant of circumcision; and so ^(CX)Abraham became the father of Isaac, and circumcised him on the eighth day; and ^(CY)Isaac became the father of Jacob, and ^(CZ)Jacob of the twelve ^(DA)patriarchs.

⁹ “The patriarchs ^(DB)became jealous of Joseph and sold him into Egypt. Yet God was with him, ¹⁰ and rescued him from all his afflictions, and ^(DC)granted him favor and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh, king of Egypt, and he made him governor over Egypt and all his household.

¹¹ “Now ^(DD)a famine came over all Egypt and Canaan, and great affliction with it, and our fathers ^[aw]could find no food. ¹² But ^(DE)when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent our fathers there the first time. ¹³ On the second visit ^(DF)Joseph ^[ax]made himself known to his brothers, and ^(DG)Joseph’s family was disclosed to Pharaoh. ¹⁴ Then ^(DH)Joseph sent word and invited Jacob his father and all his relatives to come to him, ^(DI)seventy-five ^[ay](DJ)persons in all. ¹⁵ And ^(DK)Jacob went down to Egypt and there he and our fathers died. ¹⁶ From there they were removed to ^[az](DL)Shechem and laid in the tomb which Abraham had purchased for a sum of money from the sons of ^[ba]Hamor in ^[bb]Shechem.

¹⁷ “But as the ^(DM)time of the promise was approaching which God had assured to Abraham, ^(DN)the people increased and multiplied in Egypt, ¹⁸ until ^(DO)there arose another king over Egypt who knew nothing about Joseph. ¹⁹ It was he who took ^(DP)shrewd advantage of our race and mistreated our fathers so that they would ^[bc](DQ)expose their infants and they would not survive. ²⁰ It was at this time that ^(DR)Moses was born; and he was lovely ^[bd]in the sight of God, and he was nurtured three months in his father’s home. ²¹ And after he had been set outside, ^(DS)Pharaoh’s daughter ^[be]took him away and nurtured him as her own son. ²² Moses was educated in all ^(DT)the learning of the Egyptians, and he was a man of power in words and deeds. ²³ But when he was approaching the age of forty, ^(DU)it entered his ^[bf]mind to visit his brethren, the sons of Israel. ²⁴ And when he saw one of them being treated unjustly, he defended him and took vengeance for the oppressed by striking down the Egyptian. ²⁵ And he supposed that his brethren understood that God was granting them ^[bg]deliverance ^[bh]through him, but they did not understand. ^26 (DV)On the following day he appeared to them as they were fighting together, and he tried to reconcile them in peace, saying, ‘Men, you are brethren, why do you injure one another?’ ²⁷ But the one who was injuring his neighbor pushed him away, saying, ‘^(DW)Who made you a ruler and judge over us? ^28 (DX)You do not mean to kill me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday, do you?’ ²⁹ At this remark, ^(DY)Moses fled and became an alien in the land of ^[bi]Midian, where he ^(DZ)became the father of two sons.

³⁰ “After forty years had passed, ^(EA)an angel appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sinai, in the flame of a burning thorn bush. ³¹ When Moses saw it, he marveled at the sight; and as he approached to look more closely, there came the voice of the Lord: ³² ‘^(EB)I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham and Isaac and Jacob.’ Moses shook with fear and would not venture to look. ^33 (EC)But the Lord said to him, ‘^(ED)Take off the sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground. ^34 (EE)I have certainly seen the oppression of My people in Egypt and have heard their groans, and I have come down to rescue them; ^[bj](EF)come now, and I will send you to Egypt.’

³⁵ “This Moses whom they ^(EG)disowned, saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and a judge?’ is the one whom God ^[bk]sent to be both a ruler and a deliverer with the ^[bl]help of the angel who appeared to him in the thorn bush. ^36 (EH)This man led them out, performing ^(EI)wonders and ^[bm]signs in the land of Egypt and in the Red Sea and in the ^(EJ)wilderness for forty years. ³⁷ This is the Moses who said to the sons of Israel, ‘^(EK)God will raise up for you a prophet ^[bn]like me from your brethren.’ ³⁸ This is the one who was in ^(EL)the ^[bo]congregation in the wilderness together with ^(EM)the angel who was speaking to him on Mount Sinai, and who was with our fathers; and he received ^(EN)living ^(EO)oracles to pass on to you. ³⁹ Our fathers were unwilling to be obedient to him, but ^(EP)repudiated him and in their hearts turned back to Egypt, ^40 (EQ)saying to Aaron, ‘Make for us gods who will go before us; for this Moses who led us out of the land of Egypt—we do not know what happened to him.’ ^41 [bp]At that time ^(ER)they made a ^[bq]calf and brought a sacrifice to the idol, and were rejoicing in ^(ES)the works of their hands. ⁴² But God ^(ET)turned away and delivered them up to ^[br]serve the ^[bs]host of heaven; as it is written in the book of the prophets, ‘^(EU)It was not to Me that you offered victims and sacrifices ^(EV)forty years in the wilderness, was it, O house of Israel? ^43 (EW)You also took along the tabernacle of Moloch and the star of the god ^[bt]Rompha, the images which you made to worship. I also will remove you beyond Babylon.’

⁴⁴ “Our fathers had ^(EX)the tabernacle of testimony in the wilderness, just as He who spoke to Moses directed him to make it ^(EY)according to the pattern which he had seen. ⁴⁵ And having received it in their turn, our fathers ^(EZ)brought it in with ^[bu]Joshua upon dispossessing the ^[bv]nations whom God drove out before our fathers, until the time of David. ^46 (FA)David found favor in God’s sight, and ^(FB)asked that he might find a dwelling place for the ^[bw]God of Jacob. ⁴⁷ But it was ^(FC)Solomon who built a house for Him. ⁴⁸ However, ^(FD)the Most High does not dwell in houses made by human hands; as the prophet says:

⁵¹ “You men who are ^(FG)stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears are always resisting the Holy Spirit; you are doing just as your fathers did. ^52 (FH)Which one of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? They killed those who had previously announced the coming of ^(FI)the Righteous One, whose betrayers and murderers ^(FJ)you have now become; ⁵³ you who received the law as ^(FK)ordained by angels, and yet did not keep it.”

Stephen Put to Death

⁵⁴ Now when they heard this, they were ^(FL)cut to the quick, and they began gnashing their teeth at him. ⁵⁵ But being ^(FM)full of the Holy Spirit, he ^(FN)gazed intently into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing ^(FO)at the right hand of God; ⁵⁶ and he said, “Behold, I see the ^(FP)heavens opened up and ^(FQ)the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.” ⁵⁷ But they cried out with a loud voice, and covered their ears and rushed at him with one impulse. ⁵⁸ When they had ^(FR)driven him out of the city, they began stoning him; and ^(FS)the witnesses ^(FT)laid aside their robes at the feet of ^(FU)a young man named Saul. ⁵⁹ They went on stoning Stephen as he ^(FV)called on the Lord and said, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit!” ⁶⁰ Then ^(FW)falling on his knees, he cried out with a loud voice, “Lord, ^(FX)do not hold this sin against them!” Having said this, he ^[bx](FY)fell asleep.

Saul Persecutes the Church

8 ^(FZ)Saul was in hearty agreement with putting him to death.

And on that day a great persecution ^[by]began against ^(GA)the church in Jerusalem, and they were all ^(GB)scattered throughout the regions of Judea and ^(GC)Samaria, except the apostles. ² Some devout men buried Stephen, and made loud lamentation over him. ³ But ^(GD)Saul began ravaging the church, entering house after house, and ^(GE)dragging off men and women, he would put them in prison.

Philip in Samaria

⁴ Therefore, those ^(GF)who had been scattered went about ^[bz](GG)preaching the word. ^5 (GH)Philip went down to the city of Samaria and began proclaiming ^[ca]Christ to them. ⁶ The crowds with one accord were giving attention to what was said by Philip, as they heard and saw the ^[cb]signs which he was performing. ⁷ For in the case of many who had ^(GI)unclean spirits, they were coming out of them shouting with a loud voice; and many who had been ^(GJ)paralyzed and lame were healed. ⁸ So there was ^(GK)much rejoicing in that city.

⁹ Now there was a man named Simon, who formerly was practicing ^(GL)magic in the city and astonishing the people of Samaria, ^(GM)claiming to be someone great; ¹⁰ and they all, from smallest to greatest, were giving attention to him, saying, “^(GN)This man is what is called the Great Power of God.” ¹¹ And they were giving him attention because he had for a long time astonished them with his ^(GO)magic arts. ¹² But when they believed Philip ^(GP)preaching the good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were being ^(GQ)baptized, men and women alike. ¹³ Even Simon himself believed; and after being baptized, he continued on with Philip, and as he observed ^(GR)signs and ^(GS)great miracles taking place, he was constantly amazed.

¹⁴ Now when ^(GT)the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent them ^(GU)Peter and John, ¹⁵ who came down and prayed for them ^(GV)that they might receive the Holy Spirit. ¹⁶ For He had ^(GW)not yet fallen upon any of them; they had simply been ^(GX)baptized ^[cc]in the name of the Lord Jesus. ¹⁷ Then they ^(GY)began laying their hands on them, and they were ^(GZ)receiving the Holy Spirit. ¹⁸ Now when Simon saw that the Spirit was bestowed through the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money, ¹⁹ saying, “Give this authority to me as well, so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.” ²⁰ But Peter said to him, “May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could ^(HA)obtain the gift of God with money! ²¹ You have ^(HB)no part or portion in this ^[cd]matter, for your heart is not ^(HC)right before God. ²² Therefore repent of this wickedness of yours, and pray the Lord that, ^(HD)if possible, the intention of your heart may be forgiven you. ²³ For I see that you are in the gall of bitterness and in ^(HE)the ^[ce]bondage of iniquity.” ²⁴ But Simon answered and said, “^(HF)Pray to the Lord for me yourselves, so that nothing of what you have said may come upon me.”

An Ethiopian Receives Christ

²⁵ So, when they had solemnly ^(HG)testified and spoken ^(HH)the word of the Lord, they started back to Jerusalem, and were ^(HI)preaching the gospel to many villages of the ^(HJ)Samaritans.

²⁶ But ^(HK)an angel of the Lord spoke to ^(HL)Philip saying, “Get up and go south to the road that descends from Jerusalem to ^(HM)Gaza.” (^[cf]This is a desert road.) ²⁷ So he got up and went; and ^(HN)there was an Ethiopian eunuch, a court official of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, who was in charge of all her treasure; and he ^(HO)had come to Jerusalem to worship, ²⁸ and he was returning and sitting in his ^[cg]chariot, and was reading the prophet Isaiah. ²⁹ Then ^(HP)the Spirit said to Philip, “Go up and join this ^[ch]chariot.” ³⁰ Philip ran up and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet, and said, “Do you understand what you are reading?” ³¹ And he said, “Well, how could I, unless someone guides me?” And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. ³² Now the passage of Scripture which he was reading was this:

³⁴ The eunuch answered Philip and said, “Please tell me, of whom does the prophet say this? Of himself or of someone else?” ³⁵ Then Philip ^(HS)opened his mouth, and ^(HT)beginning from this Scripture he ^(HU)preached Jesus to him. ³⁶ As they went along the road they came to some water; and the eunuch *said, “Look! Water! ^(HV)What prevents me from being baptized?” ³⁷ [^[ck]And Philip said, “If you believe with all your heart, you may.” And he answered and said, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.”] ³⁸ And he ordered the ^[cl]chariot to stop; and they both went down into the water, Philip as well as the eunuch, and he baptized him. ³⁹ When they came up out of the water, ^(HW)the Spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away; and the eunuch no longer saw him, ^[cm]but went on his way rejoicing. ⁴⁰ But Philip ^[cn]found himself at ^[co](HX)Azotus, and as he passed through he ^(HY)kept preaching the gospel to all the cities until he came to ^(HZ)Caesarea.
