Paul in Ephesus
19 While Apollos was in the city of Corinth, Paul was visiting some places on his way to Ephesus. In Ephesus he found some other followers of the Lord. 2 He asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?”
These followers said to him, “We have never even heard of a Holy Spirit!”
3 Paul asked them, “So what kind of baptism did you have?”
They said, “It was the baptism that John taught.”
4 Paul said, “John told people to be baptized to show they wanted to change their lives. He told people to believe in the one who would come after him, and that one is Jesus.”
5 When these followers heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 Then Paul laid his hands on them, and the Holy Spirit came on them. They began speaking different languages and prophesying. 7 There were about twelve men in this group.
8 Paul went into the synagogue and spoke very boldly. He continued doing this for three months. He talked with the Jews, trying to persuade them to accept what he was telling them about God’s kingdom. 9 But some of them became stubborn and refused to believe. In front of everyone, they said bad things about the Way. So Paul left these Jews and took the Lord’s followers with him. He went to a place where a man named Tyrannus had a school. There Paul talked with people every day. 10 He did this for two years. Because of this work, everyone in Asia, Jews and Greeks, heard the word of the Lord.
The Sons of Sceva
11 God used Paul to do some very special miracles. 12 Some people carried away handkerchiefs and clothes that Paul had used and put them on those who were sick. The sick people were healed, and evil spirits left them.
13-14 Some Jews also were traveling around forcing evil spirits out of people. The seven sons of Sceva, one of the leading priests, were doing this. These Jews tried to use the name of the Lord Jesus to make the evil spirits go out of people. They all said, “By the same Jesus that Paul talks about, I order you to come out!”
15 But one time an evil spirit said to these Jews, “I know Jesus, and I know about Paul, but who are you?”
16 Then the man who had the evil spirit inside him jumped on these Jews. He was much stronger than all of them. He beat them up and tore their clothes off. They all ran away from that house.
17 All the people in Ephesus, Jews and Greeks, learned about this. They were all filled with fear and gave great honor to the Lord Jesus. 18 Many of the believers began to confess, telling about all the evil things they had done. 19 Some of them had used magic. These believers brought their magic books and burned them before everyone. These books were worth about 50,000 silver coins.[a] 20 This is how the word of the Lord was spreading in a powerful way, causing more and more people to believe.
Paul Plans a Trip
21 After this, Paul made plans to go to Jerusalem. He planned to go through the regions of Macedonia and Achaia, and then go to Jerusalem. He thought, “After I visit Jerusalem, I must also visit Rome.” 22 Timothy and Erastus were two of his helpers. Paul sent them ahead to Macedonia. But he stayed in Asia for a while.
Trouble in Ephesus
23 But during that time there was some trouble in Ephesus about the Way. This is how it all happened: 24 There was a man named Demetrius. He worked with silver. He made little silver models that looked like the temple of the goddess Artemis. The men who did this work made a lot of money.
25 Demetrius had a meeting with these men and some others who did the same kind of work. He told them, “Men, you know that we make a lot of money from our business. 26 But look at what this man Paul is doing. Listen to what he is saying. He has convinced many people in Ephesus and all over Asia to change their religion. He says the gods that people make by hand are not real. 27 I’m afraid this is going to turn people against our business. But there is also another problem. People will begin to think that the temple of the great goddess Artemis is not important. Her greatness will be destroyed. And Artemis is the goddess that everyone in Asia and the whole world worships.”
28 When the men heard this, they became very angry. They shouted, “Great is Artemis, the goddess of Ephesus!” 29 The whole city was thrown into confusion. The people grabbed Gaius and Aristarchus, men from Macedonia who were traveling with Paul, and rushed all together into the stadium. 30 Paul wanted to go in and talk to the people, but the Lord’s followers did not let him go. 31 Also, some leaders of the country who were friends of Paul sent him a message telling him not to go into the stadium.
32 Some people were shouting one thing and others were shouting something else. The meeting was very confused. Most of the people did not know why they had come there. 33 Some Jews made a man named Alexander stand before the crowd, and they told him what to say. Alexander waved his hand, trying to explain things to the people. 34 But when the people saw that Alexander was a Jew, they all began shouting the same thing. For two hours they continued shouting, “Great is Artemis of Ephesus! Great is Artemis of Ephesus! Great is Artemis …!”
35 Then the city clerk persuaded the people to be quiet. He said, “Men of Ephesus, everyone knows that Ephesus is the city that keeps the temple of the great goddess Artemis. Everyone knows that we also keep her holy rock.[b] 36 No one can deny this, so you should be quiet. You must stop and think before you do anything else.
37 “You brought these men[c] here, but they have not said anything bad against our goddess. They have not stolen anything from her temple. 38 We have courts of law and there are judges. Do Demetrius and those men who work with him have a charge against anyone? They should go to the courts. Let them argue with each other there.
39 “Is there something else you want to talk about? Then come to the regular town meeting of the people. It can be decided there. 40 I say this because someone might see this trouble today and say we are rioting. We could not explain all this trouble, because there is no real reason for this meeting.” 41 After the city clerk said this, he told the people to go home.

19 Now it happened that while (A)Apollos was at (B)Corinth, Paul passed through the (C)upper regions and came to (D)Ephesus and found some disciples. 2 And he said to them, “(E)Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” And they said to him, “No, (F)we have not even heard if the Holy Spirit is being received.” 3 And he said, “Into what then were you baptized?” And they said, “(G)Into John’s baptism.” 4 Then Paul said, “(H)John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people (I)to believe in Him who was coming after him, that is, in Jesus.” 5 And when they heard this, they were (J)baptized [a]in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had (K)laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began (L)speaking with tongues and (M)prophesying. 7 Now there were in all about twelve men.
8 And after he entered (N)the synagogue, he continued speaking out boldly for three months, reasoning and persuading them (O)about the kingdom of God. 9 But when (P)some were becoming hardened and were not believing, speaking evil of (Q)the Way before the multitude, he left them and took away (R)the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus. 10 This took place for (S)two years, so that all who lived in [b](T)Asia heard (U)the word of the Lord, both Jews and Greeks.
Miracles in Ephesus
11 And God was doing (V)extraordinary [c]miracles by the hands of Paul, 12 (W)so that cloths or aprons were even carried from his body to the sick, and the diseases left them and (X)the evil spirits went out. 13 But also some of the Jewish (Y)exorcists, who went from place to place, attempted to invoke over those who had the evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, “I implore you by Jesus whom Paul preaches.” 14 Now seven sons of one named Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this. 15 And the evil spirit answered and said to them, “I recognize Jesus, and I know about Paul, but who are you?” 16 And the man, in whom was the evil spirit, leaped on them, subdued all of them, and utterly prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. 17 And this became known to all, both Jews and Greeks, who lived in (Z)Ephesus; and fear fell upon them all and the name of the Lord Jesus was being magnified. 18 Also, many of those who had believed kept coming, confessing and disclosing their practices. 19 And many of those who practiced magic brought their books together and were burning them in the sight of everyone; and they counted up the price of them and found it fifty thousand [d](AA)pieces of silver. 20 So [e](AB)the word of the Lord (AC)was growing mightily and prevailing.
Riots in Ephesus
21 Now after these things were finished, Paul purposed in the [f]Spirit to (AD)go to Jerusalem (AE)after he had passed through (AF)Macedonia and (AG)Achaia, saying, “After I have been there, (AH)I must also see Rome.” 22 And having sent into (AI)Macedonia two of (AJ)those who ministered to him, (AK)Timothy and (AL)Erastus, he himself stayed in [g](AM)Asia for a while.
23 Now about that time there occurred no small disturbance concerning (AN)the Way. 24 For a man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of [h]Artemis, (AO)was bringing no little [i]business to the craftsmen; 25 these he gathered together with the workers of similar trades, and said, “Men, you know that our prosperity is from this business. 26 And you see and hear that not only in (AP)Ephesus, but in almost all of (AQ)Asia, this Paul has persuaded and turned away a considerable crowd, saying that (AR)things made with hands are not gods. 27 And not only is there danger that this trade of ours fall into disrepute, but also that the temple of the great goddess [j]Artemis be considered as worthless and that she, whom all of (AS)Asia and (AT)the [k]world worship, is even about to be brought down from her majesty.”
28 When they heard this and were filled with rage, they began crying out, saying, “Great is [l]Artemis of the (AU)Ephesians!” 29 And the city was filled with the confusion, and they rushed [m]with one accord into the theater, dragging along (AV)Gaius and (AW)Aristarchus, Paul’s traveling (AX)companions from (AY)Macedonia. 30 And when Paul wanted to go into the [n]assembly, (AZ)the disciples would not let him. 31 Also some of the [o]Asiarchs who were friends of his sent to him and repeatedly urged him not to [p]venture into the theater. 32 (BA)So then, some were shouting one thing and some another, for the [q]meeting was in confusion and the majority did not know [r]for what reason they had come together. 33 And some of the crowd [s]concluded it was Alexander, since the Jews had put him forward; and having (BB)motioned with his hand, Alexander was intending to make a defense to the [t]assembly. 34 But when they recognized that he was a Jew, a single cry arose from them all as they shouted for about two hours, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!” 35 Now after calming the crowd, the city clerk *said, “Men of (BC)Ephesus, what man is there after all who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is guardian of the temple of the great Artemis and of the image which fell down from heaven? 36 So, since these are undeniable facts, you ought to keep calm and to do nothing rash. 37 For you have brought these men here who are neither (BD)robbers of temples nor blasphemers of our goddess. 38 So then, if Demetrius and the craftsmen who are with him have a complaint against anyone, the courts are in session and [u](BE)proconsuls are available; let them bring charges against one another. 39 But if you want anything beyond this, it shall be settled in the [v]lawful meeting. 40 For indeed we are in danger of being accused of a riot in connection with today’s events, since there is no cause for which we can give as an account for this disorderly gathering.” 41 After saying this he dismissed the meeting.

Paulus in Efeze
19 Terwijl Apollos in Korinte was, reisde Paulus door de noordelijke gebieden. Zo kwam hij ook in Efeze. Daar vond hij een aantal leerlingen. 2 Hij vroeg aan hen: "Hebben jullie de Heilige Geest ontvangen toen jullie in Jezus gingen geloven?" Ze antwoordden: "We wisten niet eens dat er een Heilige Geest is." 3 Toen vroeg hij: "Hoe zijn jullie dan gedoopt?" Zei zeiden: "Met de doop van Johannes." 4 Maar Paulus zei: "Johannes' doop betekende dat je wilde gaan leven zoals God het wil. En Johannes zei tegen de mensen dat ze moesten geloven in de Man die na hem kwam. Dat is dus Jezus Christus." 5 Toen ze dat hoorden, lieten ze zich dopen in de naam van de Heer Jezus. 6 En toen Paulus hun de handen oplegde, kwam de Heilige Geest over hen. Ze begonnen in nieuwe talen van de Geest te spreken en te profeteren. 7 Het waren ongeveer twaalf mannen.
8 Paulus ging ook naar de synagoge en sprak daar drie maanden lang, vol geloof en zonder vrees. Hij probeerde de mensen te overtuigen dat ze in het Koninkrijk van God moesten gaan geloven. 9 Maar sommige mensen bleven koppig en eigenwijs. Ze wilden niet gehoorzamen aan wat hij hun leerde. Tegen de mensen die naar Paulus luisterden, bleven ze slechte dingen zeggen over de weg van God. Daarom ging Paulus bij hen weg en nam de leerlingen mee. Met hen sprak hij elke dag in de zaal van Tyrannus. 10 Dat bleef hij twee jaar lang doen. Zo hoorden alle Joden en Grieken in Asia het woord van de Heer.
11 En God deed heel bijzondere wonderen door Paulus. 12 De mensen brachten zelfs Paulus' zakdoeken en hoofddoeken naar de zieken toe. Als die op de zieken werden gelegd, werden de zieken gezond en gingen duivelse geesten uit hen weg.
De zonen van Sceva
13 Er waren ook een paar rondreizende Joden die duivelse geesten uit mensen wegjoegen. Ze waren op een keer zo brutaal om daarvoor de naam van de Heer Jezus te gebruiken. Ze zeiden: "Ik beveel je bij de Jezus over wie Paulus het heeft, om uit deze man weg te gaan!" 14 Het waren de zeven zonen van Sceva die dat deden. Sceva was een Joodse leider van de priesters. 15 Maar de duivelse geest antwoordde: "Jezus ken ik. Van Paulus heb ik gehoord. Maar wie zijn jullie?" 16 En de man in wie de duivelse geest zat, sprong op hen af en gaf hun ervan langs. Hij was zóveel sterker dan zij, dat ze zonder kleren en gewond uit dat huis moesten vluchten. 17 Alle Joden en Grieken die in Efeze woonden, hoorden ervan. En ze kregen diep ontzag voor Jezus en ze prezen Hem.
De tovenaars
18 Heel veel mensen die in Jezus waren gaan geloven, kwamen naar Paulus en vertelden wat ze voor verkeerde dingen hadden gedaan. 19 Een paar mannen die vroeger aan toverij hadden gedaan, brachten hun toverboeken bij elkaar en verbrandden ze. Iedereen kwam kijken. Er werd geschat dat die boeken ongeveer 50.000 zilverstukken waard waren geweest.
20 Zo groeide het woord van de Heer snel en werd steeds sterker.
21 Hierna maakte Paulus plannen om door Macedonië en Achaje naar Jeruzalem te reizen. Hij zei: "En als ik in Jeruzalem ben geweest, moet ik ook naar Rome gaan." 22 Hij stuurde twee van zijn helpers, Timoteüs en Erastus, alvast naar Macedonië. Maar zelf bleef hij nog een tijd in Asia.
De zilversmid Demetrius
23 Rond die tijd ontstond er een grote rel rond het goede nieuws. 24 Want er was een zilversmid, Demetrius, die zilveren tempeltjes maakte. Die tempeltjes waren een afbeelding van de tempel van de godin Artemis in Efeze. Veel mensen verdienden goed aan de verkoop van die tempeltjes. 25 Demetrius riep die mensen en de andere zilversmeden bij elkaar en zei: "Mannen, jullie weten dat we door dit werk rijk zijn geworden. 26 Nu zien en horen jullie wat deze Paulus doet. Hij heeft een hele grote groep mensen omgepraat om niet meer in onze godin Artemis te geloven. Dat doet hij niet alleen in Efeze, maar in heel Asia. Hij zegt dat goden die door mensen worden gemaakt geen goden zijn. 27 Nu wordt Artemis nog in heel Asia en in de hele wereld als godin aanbeden. Maar door hem lopen we het gevaar dat ons beroep straks niet meer meetelt. Door hem zal over enige tijd de tempel van de grote godin Artemis niet meer belangrijk zijn en zal Artemis niet langer beroemd zijn!"
28 Toen ze dit hoorden, werden ze woedend. Ze begonnen te schreeuwen: "De Artemis van Efeze is geweldig!" 29 De hele stad raakte in rep en roer en stormde als één man naar het plein. Ze sleurden Gajus en Aristarchus mee. Dat waren reisgenoten van Paulus uit Macedonië. 30 Paulus wilde er naartoe gaan, maar de leerlingen hielden hem tegen. 31 Hij werd zelfs door een paar bestuurders van Asia gewaarschuwd om niet naar het plein te gaan. Ze waren met Paulus bevriend en zeiden hem dat het er te gevaarlijk voor hem was.
De rel op het plein
32 Op het plein riep de één dit, de ander dat. De hele vergadering was één grote verwarring. De meeste mensen wisten niet eens waarvoor ze waren gekomen. 33 De Joden duwden Alexander naar voren om het woord te doen. Alexander wenkte met zijn hand om de mensen stil te krijgen. Hij wilde een toespraak beginnen tot het volk, om uit te leggen waarom ze naar het plein waren gekomen. 34 Maar toen de mensen merkten dat hij een Jood was, begonnen ze te schreeuwen: "De Artemis van Efeze is geweldig!" Dat deden ze twee uur lang. 35 Toen wist de schrijver van de stad de mensen weer rustig te krijgen. Hij zei namelijk: "Mannen van Efeze! De hele wereld weet dat de stad Efeze de bewaker is van de tempel van de machtige Artemis en van het beeld dat uit de hemel is gevallen. 36 Niemand twijfelt daaraan. Daarom moeten jullie je rustig houden en geen overhaaste dingen gaan doen. 37 Jullie hebben zomaar deze mannen gearresteerd. Maar ze zijn geen tempelrovers en ze hebben onze godin niet beledigd. 38 Als Demetrius en andere zilversmeden iets tegen hen hebben, moeten ze naar de rechter gaan. Jullie weten dat er rechtszittingen zijn en bestuurders. Laten ze daar dan naartoe gaan om deze mensen te beschuldigen. 39 Als jullie verder nog iets willen, moet daarover in een officiële vergadering worden beslist. 40 Want nu lopen we het gevaar dat we door de Romeinen worden beschuldigd van een opstand. Want we kunnen helemaal geen goede reden opgeven waarom er vandaag zo'n rel is." Met die woorden sloot hij de vergadering.
