28 (A)And there you will serve gods, the work of man’s hands, (B)wood and stone, (C)which neither see nor hear nor eat nor smell.

10 Who has formed a god or cast a graven image to (A)no profit? 11 Behold, all his companions will be (B)put to shame. The craftsmen themselves are mere men. Let them all assemble themselves, let them stand up, let them be in dread, let them together be put to shame.

12 The (C)man crafts iron into a cutting tool and does his work over the coals, [a]forming it with hammers and working it with his powerful arm. He also gets hungry and has no power; he drinks no water and becomes weary. 13 (D)Another crafts wood, he extends a measuring line; he outlines it with [b]a stylus. He makes it with planes and outlines it with a compass and makes it like the form of a man, like the glory of (E)man, so that it may sit in a (F)house. 14 In order to cut cedars for himself, he takes a [c]cypress or an oak and [d]raises it for himself among the trees of the forest. He plants a fir, and the rain makes it grow. 15 Then it becomes something for a man to burn, so he takes one of them and warms himself; he also kindles a fire to bake bread. He also (G)works to produce a god and worships it; he makes it a graven image and (H)falls down before it. 16 Half of it he burns in the fire; over this half he eats meat as he roasts a roast and is satisfied. He also warms himself and says, “Aha! I am warm; I have seen the fire.” 17 But the rest of it he (I)makes into a god, his graven image. He falls down before it and worships; he also (J)prays to it and says, “Deliver me, for you are my god.”

18 They do not (K)know, nor do they understand, for He has (L)smeared over their eyes so that they cannot see and their hearts so that they will have no insight. 19 No one causes this to return to his heart, nor is there (M)knowledge or understanding to say, “I have burned half of it in the fire and also have baked bread over its coals. I roast meat and eat it. Then [e]I make the rest of it into an (N)abomination; [f]I fall down before a block of wood!” 20 He [g](O)feeds on ashes; a (P)deceived heart has turned him aside. And he cannot deliver his soul, and he cannot say, “(Q)Is there not a lie in my right hand?”

For the statutes of the peoples are (A)vanity
Because (B)it is wood cut from the forest,
The work of the hands of a craftsman with a cutting tool.
They (C)make it beautiful with silver and with gold;
They (D)strengthen it with nails and with hammers
So that it will not totter.
Like a scarecrow in a cucumber field are they,
And they (E)cannot speak;
They must be (F)carried
Because they cannot take a step!
Do not fear them,
For they (G)can do no harm,
Nor can they do any good.”

(H)There is none like You, O Yahweh;
You are (I)great, and great is Your name in might.
(J)Who would not fear You, O (K)King of the nations?
Indeed it is Your due!
For among all the (L)wise men of the nations
And in all their kingdoms,
There is none like You.
But they are altogether (M)senseless and foolish;
They are in a discipline of [a]vanities—it is mere wood!
Beaten (N)silver is brought from (O)Tarshish,
And (P)gold from Uphaz,
The work of a craftsman and of the hands of a goldsmith;
Blue and purple are their clothing;
They are all the (Q)work of wise craftsmen.
10 But Yahweh is the (R)true God;
He is the (S)living God and the (T)everlasting King.
At His wrath the (U)earth quakes,
And the nations cannot (V)endure His indignation.

11 [b]Thus you shall say to them, “The (W)gods that did not make the heavens and the earth will (X)perish from the earth and from under [c]the heavens.”

12 It is (Y)He who made the earth by His power,
Who (Z)established the world by His wisdom;
And by His understanding He has (AA)stretched out the heavens.
13 When He gives forth His (AB)voice, there is a tumult of waters in the heavens,
And He causes the (AC)clouds to ascend from the end of the earth;
He makes lightning for the rain,
And brings out the (AD)wind from His storehouses.
14 Every man is (AE)senseless, devoid of knowledge;
Every goldsmith is put to shame by his graven images;
For his molten images are a lie,
And there is no breath in them.
15 They are (AF)vanity, a work of mockery;
In the (AG)time of their punishment they will perish.
16 The (AH)portion of Jacob is not like these;
For the [d](AI)Maker of all is He,
And (AJ)Israel is the tribe of His inheritance;
(AK)Yahweh of hosts is His name.

17 (AL)Gather up your bundle from the ground,
You who inhabit a land under siege!

18 For thus says Yahweh,

“Behold, I am (AM)slinging out the inhabitants of the land
At this time,
And will cause them distress,
That they may find it.”

19 (AN)Woe is me, because of my [e]injury!
My (AO)wound is desperately sick.
But I said, “Truly this is a sickness,
And I (AP)must bear it.”
20 My (AQ)tent is destroyed,
And all my ropes are torn out;
My (AR)sons have gone from me and are no more.
There is (AS)no one to stretch out my tent again
Or to set up my curtains.
21 For the shepherds have become senseless
And (AT)have not sought Yahweh;
Therefore they have not prospered,
And (AU)all their flock is scattered.
22 The sound of a (AV)report! Behold, it comes—
A great quaking (AW)out of the land of the north—
To (AX)make the cities of Judah
A desolation, a haunt of jackals.

23 I know, O Yahweh, that (AY)a man’s way is not in himself,
(AZ)Nor is it in a man who walks to [f]direct his steps.
24 (BA)Discipline me, O Yahweh, but with justice;
Not with Your anger, lest You [g]bring me to nothing.
25 (BB)Pour out Your wrath on the nations that (BC)do not know You
And on the families that (BD)do not call Your name,
For they have devoured Jacob;
They have (BE)devoured him and consumed him
And have made desolate his [h]abode.
