David Plans to Build a Temple

7 (A)Now it came about when the king lived in his house, and the Lord had given him rest on every side from all his enemies, 2 that the king said to (B)Nathan the prophet, “See now, I dwell in (C)a house of cedar, but the ark of God (D)dwells within tent curtains.” 3 Nathan said to the king, “(E)Go, do all that is in your mind, for the Lord is with you.”

4 But in the same night the word of the Lord came to Nathan, saying, 5 “Go and say to My servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord, “(F)Are you the one who should build Me a house to dwell in? 6 For (G)I have not dwelt in a house since the day I brought up the sons of Israel from Egypt, even to this day; but I have been moving about (H)in a tent, even in a [a]tabernacle. 7 (I)Wherever I have gone with all the sons of Israel, did I speak a word with one of the tribes of Israel, (J)which I commanded to shepherd My people Israel, saying, ‘Why have you not built Me a house of cedar?’”’

God’s Covenant with David

8 “Now therefore, thus you shall say to My servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, “(K)I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, (L)to be ruler over My people Israel. 9 (M)I have been with you wherever you have gone and (N)have cut off all your enemies from before you; and I will make you a great name, like the names of the great men who are on the earth. 10 I will also appoint a place for My people Israel and (O)will plant them, that they may live in their own place and not be disturbed again, (P)nor will the [b]wicked afflict them any more as formerly, 11 even (Q)from the day that I commanded judges to be over My people Israel; and (R)I will give you rest from all your enemies. The Lord also declares to you that (S)the Lord will make a house for you. 12 (T)When your days are complete and you (U)lie down with your fathers, (V)I will raise up your [c]descendant after you, who will come forth from [d]you, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 (W)He shall build a house for My name, and (X)I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. 14 (Y)I will be a father to him and he will be a son to Me; (Z)when he commits iniquity, I will correct him with the rod of men and the strokes of the sons of men, 15 but My lovingkindness shall not depart from him, (AA)as I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from before you. 16 (AB)Your house and your kingdom shall endure before [e]Me forever; your throne shall be established forever.”’” 17 In accordance with all these words and all this vision, so Nathan spoke to David.

God’s Promise to David(A)

7 After the king was settled in his palace(B) and the Lord had given him rest from all his enemies(C) around him,(D) 2 he said to Nathan(E) the prophet, “Here I am, living in a house(F) of cedar, while the ark of God remains in a tent.”(G)

3 Nathan replied to the king, “Whatever you have in mind,(H) go ahead and do it, for the Lord is with you.”

4 But that night the word of the Lord came to Nathan, saying:

5 “Go and tell my servant David, ‘This is what the Lord says: Are you(I) the one to build me a house to dwell in?(J) 6 I have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought the Israelites up out of Egypt to this day.(K) I have been moving from place to place with a tent(L) as my dwelling.(M) 7 Wherever I have moved with all the Israelites,(N) did I ever say to any of their rulers whom I commanded to shepherd(O) my people Israel, “Why have you not built me a house(P) of cedar?(Q)”’

8 “Now then, tell my servant David, ‘This is what the Lord Almighty says: I took you from the pasture, from tending the flock,(R) and appointed you ruler(S) over my people Israel.(T) 9 I have been with you wherever you have gone,(U) and I have cut off all your enemies from before you.(V) Now I will make your name great, like the names of the greatest men on earth.(W) 10 And I will provide a place for my people Israel and will plant(X) them so that they can have a home of their own and no longer be disturbed.(Y) Wicked(Z) people will not oppress them anymore,(AA) as they did at the beginning 11 and have done ever since the time I appointed leaders[a](AB) over my people Israel. I will also give you rest from all your enemies.(AC)

“‘The Lord declares(AD) to you that the Lord himself will establish(AE) a house(AF) for you: 12 When your days are over and you rest(AG) with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, your own flesh and blood,(AH) and I will establish his kingdom.(AI) 13 He is the one who will build a house(AJ) for my Name,(AK) and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.(AL) 14 I will be his father, and he will be my son.(AM) When he does wrong, I will punish him(AN) with a rod(AO) wielded by men, with floggings inflicted by human hands. 15 But my love will never be taken away from him,(AP) as I took it away from Saul,(AQ) whom I removed from before you. 16 Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me[b]; your throne(AR) will be established(AS) forever.(AT)’”

17 Nathan reported to David all the words of this entire revelation.

18 Then David the king went in and sat before the Lord, and he said, “(A)Who am I, O Lord [a]God, and what is my house, that You have brought me this far? 19 And yet this was insignificant in Your eyes, O Lord God, (B)for You have spoken also of the house of Your servant concerning the distant future. And (C)this is the [b]custom of man, O Lord God. 20 Again what more can David say to You? 18 Then King David went in and sat before the Lord, and he said:

“Who am I,(B) Sovereign Lord, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? 19 And as if this were not enough in your sight, Sovereign Lord, you have also spoken about the future of the house of your servant—and this decree,(C) Sovereign Lord, is for a mere human![a]

20 “What more can David say(D) to you? For you know(E) your servant,(F) Sovereign Lord. 21 For the sake of your word and according to your will, you have done this great thing and made it known to your servant.

22 “How great(G) you are,(H) Sovereign Lord! There is no one like(I) you, and there is no God(J) but you, as we have heard with our own ears.(K) 23 And who is like your people Israel(L)—the one nation on earth that God went out to redeem as a people for himself, and to make a name(M) for himself, and to perform great and awesome wonders(N) by driving out nations and their gods from before your people, whom you redeemed(O) from Egypt?[b] 24 You have established your people Israel as your very own(P) forever, and you, Lord, have become their God.(Q)

16 Then David the king went in and sat before the Lord and said, “(A)Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my house that You have brought me this far? 17 This was a small thing in Your eyes, O God; but You have spoken of Your servant’s house for a great while to come, and have regarded me according to the standard of a man of high degree, O Lord God. 18 What more can David still say to You concerning the honor bestowed on Your servant? For You know Your servant. 19 O Lord, (B)for Your servant’s sake, and according to Your own heart, You have wrought all this greatness, to make known all these great things. 20 O Lord, there is none like You, nor is there any God besides You, according to all that we have heard with our ears. 21 And what one nation in the earth is like Your people Israel, whom God went to redeem for Himself as a people, to make You a name by great and terrible things, in driving out nations from before Your people, whom You redeemed out of Egypt? 22 (C)For Your people Israel You made Your own people forever, and You, O Lord, became their God.

8 (A)Now after this it came about that David [a]defeated the Philistines and subdued them; and David took [b]control of the chief city from the hand of the Philistines.

2 (B)He [c]defeated (C)Moab, and measured them with the line, making them lie down on the ground; and he measured two lines to put to death and one full line to keep alive. And (D)the Moabites became servants to David, (E)bringing tribute.

3 Then David [d]defeated (F)Hadadezer, the son of Rehob king of Zobah, as (G)he went to restore his [e]rule at the [f]River. 4 David captured from him 1,700 horsemen and 20,000 foot soldiers; and David (H)hamstrung the chariot horses, but reserved enough of them for 100 chariots. 5 When (I)the Arameans of Damascus came to help Hadadezer, king of Zobah, David [g]killed 22,000 Arameans. 6 Then David put garrisons among the Arameans of Damascus, and (J)the Arameans became servants to David, bringing tribute. And (K)the Lord helped David wherever he went. 7 David took the shields of gold which were [h]carried by the servants of Hadadezer and brought them to Jerusalem. 8 From [i]Betah and from (L)Berothai, cities of Hadadezer, King David took a very large amount of bronze.

9 Now when Toi king of (M)Hamath heard that David had [j]defeated all the army of Hadadezer, 10 Toi sent [k]Joram his son to King David to [l]greet him and bless him, because he had fought against Hadadezer and [m]defeated him; for Hadadezer [n]had been at war with Toi. David’s Victories(A)

8 In the course of time, David defeated the Philistines(B) and subdued(C) them, and he took Metheg Ammah from the control of the Philistines.

2 David also defeated the Moabites.(D) He made them lie down on the ground and measured them off with a length of cord. Every two lengths of them were put to death, and the third length was allowed to live. So the Moabites became subject to David and brought him tribute.(E)

3 Moreover, David defeated Hadadezer(F) son of Rehob, king of Zobah,(G) when he went to restore his monument at[a] the Euphrates(H) River. 4 David captured a thousand of his chariots, seven thousand charioteers[b] and twenty thousand foot soldiers. He hamstrung(I) all but a hundred of the chariot horses.

5 When the Arameans of Damascus(J) came to help Hadadezer king of Zobah, David struck down twenty-two thousand of them. 6 He put garrisons(K) in the Aramean kingdom of Damascus, and the Arameans became subject(L) to him and brought tribute. The Lord gave David victory wherever he went.(M)

7 David took the gold shields(N) that belonged to the officers of Hadadezer and brought them to Jerusalem. 8 From Tebah[c] and Berothai,(O) towns that belonged to Hadadezer, King David took a great quantity of bronze.

9 When Tou[d] king of Hamath(P) heard that David had defeated the entire army of Hadadezer,(Q) 10 he sent his son Joram[e] to King David to greet him and congratulate him on his victory in battle over Hadadezer, who had been at war with Tou. Joram brought with him articles of silver, of gold and of bronze.

11 King David dedicated(R) these articles to the Lord, as he had done with the silver and gold from all the nations he had subdued: 12 Edom[f](S) and Moab,(T) the Ammonites(U) and the Philistines,(V) and Amalek.(W) He also dedicated the plunder taken from Hadadezer son of Rehob, king of Zobah.

13 And David became famous(X) after he returned from striking down eighteen thousand Edomites[g] in the Valley of Salt.(Y)

14 He put garrisons throughout Edom, and all the Edomites(Z) became subject to David.(AA) The Lord gave David victory(AB) wherever he went.(AC)

David’s Kingdom Strengthened

18 Now after this (A)it came about that David [a]defeated the Philistines and subdued them and took Gath and its towns from the hand of the Philistines. 2 He defeated Moab, and the Moabites became servants to David, bringing tribute.

3 David also defeated Hadadezer king of Zobah as far as Hamath, as he went to establish his [b]rule to the Euphrates River. 4 David took from him 1,000 chariots and 7,000 horsemen and 20,000 foot soldiers, and David hamstrung all the chariot horses, but reserved enough of them for 100 chariots.

5 When the Arameans of [c]Damascus came to help Hadadezer king (B)of Zobah, David [d]killed 22,000 men of the Arameans. 6 Then David put garrisons among the Arameans of [e]Damascus; and the Arameans became servants to David, bringing tribute. And the Lord helped David wherever he went. 7 David took the shields of gold which were [f]carried by the servants of Hadadezer and brought them to Jerusalem. 8 Also from [g]Tibhath and from Cun, cities of Hadadezer, David took a very large amount of bronze, with which (C)Solomon made the bronze sea and the pillars and the bronze utensils.

9 Now when [h]Tou king of Hamath heard that David had [i]defeated all the army of Hadadezer king of Zobah, 10 he sent [j]Hadoram his son to King David to [k]greet him and to bless him, because he had fought against Hadadezer and had [l]defeated him; for Hadadezer had been at war with Tou. 60 O God, (A)You have rejected us. You have [d](B)broken us;
You have been (C)angry; O, (D)restore us.
2 You have made the [e](E)land quake, You have split it open;
(F)Heal its breaches, for it totters.
3 You have [f](G)made Your people experience hardship;
You have given us [g]wine to (H)drink that makes us stagger.
4 You have given a (I)banner to those who fear You,
That it may be displayed because of the truth. [h]Selah.
5 (J)That Your (K)beloved may be delivered,
(L)Save with Your right hand, and answer [i]us!

6 God has spoken in His [j](M)holiness:
“I will exult, I will portion out (N)Shechem and measure out the valley of (O)Succoth.
7 “(P)Gilead is Mine, and Manasseh is Mine;
(Q)Ephraim also is the [k]helmet of My head;
Judah is My [l](R)scepter.
8 “(S)Moab is My washbowl;
Over (T)Edom I shall throw My shoe;
Shout loud, O (U)Philistia, because of Me!”

9 Who will bring me into the besieged city?
Who [m]will lead me to Edom?
10 Have not You Yourself, O God, (V)rejected us?
And (W)will You not go forth with our armies, O God?
11 O give us help against the adversary,
For (X)deliverance [n]by man is in vain.
12 [o]Through God we shall (Y)do valiantly,
And it is He who will (Z)tread down our adversaries.

Psalm 60[a](A)

For the director of music. To the tune of “The Lily of the Covenant.” A miktam[b] of David. For teaching. When he fought Aram Naharaim[c] and Aram Zobah,[d] and when Joab returned and struck down twelve thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt.(B)

1 You have rejected us,(C) God, and burst upon us;
    you have been angry(D)—now restore us!(E)
2 You have shaken the land(F) and torn it open;
    mend its fractures,(G) for it is quaking.
3 You have shown your people desperate times;(H)
    you have given us wine that makes us stagger.(I)
4 But for those who fear you, you have raised a banner(J)
    to be unfurled against the bow.[e]

5 Save us and help us with your right hand,(K)
    that those you love(L) may be delivered.
6 God has spoken from his sanctuary:
    “In triumph I will parcel out Shechem(M)
    and measure off the Valley of Sukkoth.(N)
7 Gilead(O) is mine, and Manasseh is mine;
    Ephraim(P) is my helmet,
    Judah(Q) is my scepter.(R)
8 Moab is my washbasin,
    on Edom I toss my sandal;
    over Philistia I shout in triumph.(S)”

9 Who will bring me to the fortified city?
    Who will lead me to Edom?
10 Is it not you, God, you who have now rejected us
    and no longer go out with our armies?(T)
11 Give us aid against the enemy,
    for human help is worthless.(U)
12 With God we will gain the victory,
