Jesus diante de Pilatos(A)
23 Em seguida o grupo todo se levantou e levou Jesus para Pilatos. 2 Lá, começaram a acusá-lo, dizendo:
— Pegamos este homem tentando fazer o nosso povo se revoltar, dizendo a eles que não pagassem impostos ao Imperador e afirmando que ele é o Messias, um rei.
3 Aí Pilatos perguntou a Jesus:
— Você é o rei dos judeus?
Jesus respondeu:
— Quem está dizendo isso é o senhor.
4 Então Pilatos disse aos chefes dos sacerdotes e à multidão:
— Não encontro nenhum motivo para condenar este homem.
5 Mas eles insistiram:
— Ele está causando desordem entre o povo em toda a Judeia. Ele começou na Galileia e agora chegou aqui.
Jesus diante de Herodes
6 Ouvindo isso, Pilatos perguntou:
— Este homem é da Galileia?
7 Quando soube que Jesus era da região governada por Herodes, Pilatos o mandou para ele, pois Herodes também estava em Jerusalém naquela ocasião. 8 Herodes ficou muito contente quando viu Jesus, pois tinha ouvido falar a respeito dele e fazia muito tempo que queria vê-lo. Ele desejava ver Jesus fazer algum milagre. 9 Então fez muitas perguntas a Jesus, mas ele não respondeu nada. 10 Os chefes dos sacerdotes e os mestres da Lei se apresentaram e fizeram acusações muito fortes contra Jesus. 11 Herodes e os seus soldados zombaram de Jesus e o trataram com desprezo. Puseram nele uma capa luxuosa e o mandaram de volta para Pilatos. 12 Naquele dia Herodes e Pilatos, que antes eram inimigos, se tornaram amigos.
Jesus é condenado à morte(B)
13 Pilatos reuniu os chefes dos sacerdotes, os líderes judeus e o povo 14 e disse:
— Vocês me trouxeram este homem e disseram que ele estava atiçando o povo para fazer uma revolta. Pois eu já lhe fiz várias perguntas diante de todos vocês, mas não encontrei nele nenhuma culpa dessas coisas de que vocês o acusam. 15 Herodes também não encontrou nada contra ele e por isso o mandou de volta para nós. Assim, é claro que este homem não fez nada que mereça a pena de morte. 16 Eu vou mandar que ele seja chicoteado e depois o soltarei.
17 [Na Festa da Páscoa, Pilatos tinha o costume de soltar algum preso, a pedido do povo.] 18 Aí toda a multidão começou a gritar:
— Mata esse homem! Solta Barrabás para nós!
19 Barrabás tinha sido preso por causa de uma revolta na cidade e por assassinato.
20 Então Pilatos, querendo soltar Jesus, falou outra vez com a multidão. 21 Mas eles gritavam mais ainda:
— Crucifica! Crucifica!
22 E Pilatos disse pela terceira vez:
— Mas qual foi o crime dele? Não vejo neste homem nada que faça com que ele mereça a pena de morte. Vou mandar que ele seja chicoteado e depois o soltarei.
23 Porém eles continuaram a gritar bem alto, pedindo que Jesus fosse crucificado; e a gritaria deles venceu. 24 Pilatos condenou Jesus à morte, como pediam. 25 E soltou o homem que eles queriam — aquele que havia sido preso por causa de revolta e de assassinato. E entregou Jesus para fazerem com ele o que quisessem.
A crucificação de Jesus(C)
26 Então os soldados levaram Jesus. No caminho, eles encontraram um homem chamado Simão, da cidade de Cirene, que vinha do campo. Agarraram Simão e o obrigaram a carregar a cruz, seguindo atrás de Jesus.
27 Uma grande multidão o seguia. Nela havia algumas mulheres que choravam e se lamentavam por causa dele. 28 Jesus virou-se para elas e disse:
— Mulheres de Jerusalém, não chorem por mim, mas por vocês e pelos seus filhos! 29 Porque chegarão os dias em que todos vão dizer: “Felizes as mulheres que nunca tiveram filhos, que nunca deram à luz e que nunca amamentaram!” 30 Chegará o tempo em que todos vão dizer às montanhas: “Caiam em cima de nós!” E dirão também aos montes: “Nos cubram!” 31 Porque, se isso tudo é feito quando a lenha está verde, o que acontecerá, então, quando ela estiver seca?
32 Levaram também dois criminosos para serem mortos com Jesus. 33 Quando chegaram ao lugar chamado “A Caveira”, ali crucificaram Jesus e junto com ele os dois criminosos, um à sua direita e o outro à sua esquerda.
34 [Então Jesus disse:
— Pai, perdoa esta gente! Eles não sabem o que estão fazendo.]
Em seguida, tirando a sorte com dados, os soldados repartiram entre si as roupas de Jesus. 35 O povo ficou ali olhando, e os líderes judeus zombavam de Jesus, dizendo:
— Ele salvou os outros. Que salve a si mesmo, se é, de fato, o Messias que Deus escolheu!
36 Os soldados também zombavam de Jesus. Chegavam perto dele e lhe ofereciam vinho comum 37 e diziam:
— Se você é o rei dos judeus, salve a você mesmo!
38 Na cruz, acima da sua cabeça, estavam escritas as seguintes palavras: “Este é o Rei dos Judeus”.
39 Um dos criminosos que estavam crucificados ali insultava Jesus, dizendo:
— Você não é o Messias? Então salve a você mesmo e a nós também!
40 Porém o outro o repreendeu, dizendo:
— Você não teme a Deus? Você está debaixo da mesma condenação que ele recebeu. 41 A nossa condenação é justa, e por isso estamos recebendo o castigo que nós merecemos por causa das coisas que fizemos; mas ele não fez nada de mau.
42 Então disse:
— Jesus, lembre de mim quando o senhor vier como Rei!
43 Jesus respondeu:
— Eu afirmo a você que isto é verdade: hoje você estará comigo no paraíso.
A morte de Jesus(D)
44 Mais ou menos ao meio-dia o sol parou de brilhar, e uma escuridão cobriu toda a terra até as três horas da tarde. 45 E a cortina do Templo se rasgou pelo meio. 46 Aí Jesus gritou bem alto:
— Pai, nas tuas mãos entrego o meu espírito!
Depois de dizer isso, ele morreu. 47 Quando o oficial do exército romano viu o que havia acontecido, deu glória a Deus, dizendo:
— De fato, este homem era inocente!
48 Todos os que estavam reunidos ali para assistir àquele espetáculo viram o que havia acontecido e voltaram para casa, batendo no peito em sinal de tristeza. 49 Todos os amigos de Jesus e as mulheres que o tinham seguido desde a Galileia ficaram de longe, olhando tudo aquilo.
O sepultamento de Jesus(E)
50-51 Havia um homem chamado José, da cidade de Arimateia, na região da Judeia. Ele era bom e correto e esperava a vinda do Reino de Deus. Fazia parte do Conselho Superior, mas não tinha concordado com o que o Conselho havia resolvido e feito. 52 José foi e pediu a Pilatos o corpo de Jesus. 53 Então tirou o corpo da cruz e o enrolou num lençol de linho. Depois o colocou num túmulo cavado na rocha, que nunca havia sido usado. 54 Isso foi na sexta-feira, e já estava para começar o sábado.
55 As mulheres que haviam seguido Jesus desde a Galileia foram com José e viram o túmulo e como Jesus tinha sido colocado ali. 56 Depois voltaram para casa e prepararam perfumes e óleos para passar no corpo dele.
E no sábado elas descansaram, conforme a Lei manda.

பிலாத்துவின் கேள்வி
(மத்தேயு 27:1-2,11-14; மாற்கு 15:1-5; யோவான் 18:28-38)
23 அந்தக் கூட்டம் முழுவதும் எழுந்து நின்று இயேசுவைப் பிலாத்துவிடம் அழைத்துச் சென்றது. 2 அவர்கள் இயேசுவைப் பழிக்க ஆரம்பித்தார்கள் பிலாத்துவிடம் அவர்கள், “நமது மக்களைக் குழப்புகிற செய்திகளைக் கூறுகிறபடியால் இந்த மனிதனை நாங்கள் பிடித்து வந்தோம். இராயனுக்கு வரி கொடுக்கக் கூடாதென்று அவன் கூறுகிறான். அவன் தன்னைக் கிறிஸ்துவாகிய ராஜா என்று அழைக்கிறான்” என்றனர்.
3 பிலாத்து இயேசுவிடம், “நீ யூதரின் ராஜாவா?” என்று கேட்டான்.
இயேசு, “ஆம், அது சரியே” என்றார்.
4 அதைக் கேட்ட பிலாத்து தலைமை ஆசாரியரிடமும், மக்களிடமும் “இந்த மனிதனிடம் தவறு எதையும் நான் காணவில்லையே” என்றான்.
5 அவர்கள் மீண்டும் மீண்டுமாக, “இயேசு மக்களின் மத்தியில் அமைதியின்மையை உருவாக்கிக்கொண்டுள்ளான். யூதேயாவைச் சுற்றிலும் அவன் போதிக்கிறான். அவன் கலிலேயாவில் ஆரம்பித்து இங்கு வந்திருக்கிறான்” என்றார்கள்.
ஏரோதுவின் முன் இயேசு
6 அதைக் கேட்ட பிலாத்து, “இயேசு கலிலேயாவிலிருந்து வந்தவரா?” என்று வினவினான். 7 பின்பு ஏரோதின் அதிகாரத்திற்குட்பட்ட பகுதியில் இருந்து இயேசு வருவதை அறிந்தான். அப்போது ஏரோது எருசலேமில் இருந்தான். எனவே பிலாத்து, இயேசுவை அவனிடம் அனுப்பினான்.
8 இயேசுவைப் பார்த்ததும் ஏரோது மிகவும் மகிழ்ச்சியடைந்தான். அவரைப்பற்றி அவன் அதிகமாக கேள்விப்பட்டிருந்தபடியினாலும், இயேசு ஏதேனும் ஓர் அதிசயம் செய்வாரா எனப் பார்க்க விருப்பப்பட்டிருந்தபடியினாலும் அவரைக் காண வெகு நாளாக விருப்பம்கொண்டிருந்தான். 9 இயேசுவிடம் பல கேள்விகளைக் கேட்டான் ஏரோது. ஆனால் இயேசு ஒன்றுமே கூறவில்லை. 10 தலைமை ஆசாரியரும், வேதபாரகரும் அங்கே நின்றுகொண்டிருந்தார்கள். அவர்கள் இயேசுவுக்கு எதிரானவைகளை உரக்கக் கூறிக்கொண்டிருந்தார்கள். 11 ஏரோதுவும், அவனது வீரர்களும் இயேசுவைப் பார்த்து நகைத்தார்கள். ராஜாவுக்குரிய ஆடைகளை அணிவித்து அவரை எள்ளி நகையாடினார்கள். பின்பு ஏரோது இயேசுவைப் பிலாத்துவிடமே திரும்ப அனுப்பினான். 12 முன்னர் பிலாத்துவும், ஏரோதுவும் பகைவர்களாக இருந்து வந்தனர். ஆனால் அன்று ஏரோதுவும், பிலாத்துவும் நண்பர்களாயினர்.
பிலாத்துவும் மக்களும்

13 தலைமை ஆசாரியரையும் யூத அதிகாரிகளையும் மக்களோடு கூட பிலாத்து அழைத்தான். 14 பிலாத்து அவர்களை நோக்கி, “நீங்கள் இந்த மனிதனை (இயேசு) என்னிடம் அழைத்து வந்தீர்கள். மக்களின் நடுவில் அமைதியின்மையை விளைவிக்கிறான் என்று சொன்னீர்கள். ஆனால் உங்களுக்கு முன்பாக நான் நியாயம் தீர்த்தேன். அவன் செய்ததாக நான் எந்தக் குற்றத்தையும் கண்டு பிடிக்க முடியவில்லை. நீங்கள் புகார் சொல்கிற காரியங்களில் இயேசு குற்றவாளியாக்கப்படவில்லை. 15 மேலும் ஏரோதுவும் அவரிடம் தவறேதும் காணவில்லை. மீண்டும் இயேசுவை நம்மிடமே திருப்பி அனுப்பினான் ஏரோது. அவருக்கு மரணதண்டனை தரத் தேவையில்லை. 16 எனவே நான் அவரைச் சிறிய தண்டனை ஏதேனும் கொடுத்து விடுவித்து விடுவேன்” என்றான். 17 [a]
18 ஆனால் மக்கள் அனைவரும், “அவனைக் கொல்லுங்கள். பரபாசை விடுதலை செய்யுங்கள்” என்று சத்தமிட்டனர். 19 (நகருக்குள் கலகம் விளைவித்ததற்காக ஏற்கெனவே சிறையில் அடைக்கப்பட்டிருந்த மனிதன் பரபாஸ். அவன் சிலரைக் கொன்றுமிருந்தான்.)
20 பிலாத்து இயேசுவை விடுதலை செய்ய விரும்பினான். எனவே பிலாத்து மீண்டும் அவர்களை நோக்கி, இயேசுவை விடுவிப்பதாகக் கூறினான். 21 ஆனால் அவர்கள் மீண்டும் உரத்த குரலில், “அவனைக் கொல்லுங்கள். அவனைச் சிலுவையில் அறைந்து கொல்லுங்கள்” என்றார்கள்.
22 மூன்றாம் முறை பிலாத்து மக்களை நோக்கி, “ஏன்? அவன் என்ன தவறு செய்தான்? அவன் குற்றவாளி அல்ல. அவனைக் கொல்வதற்கேற்ற காரணம் எதையும் நான் காணவில்லை. எனவே அவனுக்குச் சிறிய தண்டனை கொடுத்து அவனை விடுதலை செய்வேன்” என்றான்.
23 ஆனால் தொடர்ந்து மக்கள் சத்தமிட்டார்கள். இயேசுவைச் சிலுவையில் அறைய வேண்டுமென வேண்டினார்கள். அவர்கள் மிகவும் உரத்த குரலில் சத்தமிட்டதைக் கேட்டதும் 24 அவர்களின் விருப்பத்தின்படியே செய்ய முடிவெடுத்தான் பிலாத்து. 25 மக்கள் அனைவரும் பரபாஸ் விடுதலை செய்யப்பட வேண்டும் என்று விரும்பினர். கலகம் விளைவித்ததற்காகவும் மக்களைக் கொன்றதற்காகவும் பரபாஸ் சிறையில் இருந்தான். பிலாத்து பரபாஸை விடுவித்தான். கொல்லப்படும்பொருட்டு, இயேசுவை மக்களிடம் பிலாத்து ஒப்படைத்தான். மக்களும் அதையே விரும்பினர்.
சிலுவையில் இயேசு
(மத்தேயு 27:32-44; மாற்கு 15:21-32; யோவான் 19:17-27)
26 இயேசுவைக் கொல்லும்பொருட்டு வீரர்கள் வெளியே அழைத்துச் சென்றனர். அப்போது வயல்களிலிருந்து நகருக்குள் ஒரு மனிதன் வந்துகொண்டிருந்தான். அவன் பெயர் சீமோன். அவன், சிரேனே நகரைச் சேர்ந்தவன். இயேசுவின் சிலுவையைச் சுமந்து அவரைத் தொடர்ந்து வருமாறு சீமோனை வீரர்கள் வற்புறுத்தினார்கள்.
27 பலரும் இயேசுவைத் தொடர்ந்தனர். சில பெண்கள் வருந்தி அழுதனர். அவர்கள் இயேசுவுக்காகக் கவலைப்பட்டனர். 28 ஆனால் இயேசு திரும்பி அப்பெண்களை நோக்கி, “எருசலேமின் பெண்களே, எனக்காக அழாதீர்கள். உங்களுக்காகவும் உங்கள் பிள்ளைகளுக்காவும் அழுங்கள். 29 ஏனெனில் பிள்ளைகளைப் பெற முடியாத பெண்கள் ஆசீர்வதிக்கப்படுகிறார்கள் என்றும் பிள்ளைகள் இல்லாத பெண்கள் ஆசீர்வதிக்கப்படுகிறார்கள் என்றும் மக்கள் பேசப்போகும் காலம் வரும். 30 அப்போது மக்கள் மலையை நோக்கி, ‘எங்கள் மேல் விழு’ என்பார்கள். சிறு குன்றுகளை நோக்கி, ‘எங்களை மறைத்துக்கொள்’ என்று சொல்லத் தொடங்குவார்கள்.(A) 31 வாழ்க்கை நன்றாக இருக்கும்போது மக்கள் இவ்வாறு நடந்துகொண்டால், தீமையான காலம் வரும்போது என்ன நிகழும்?”[b] என்றார்.
32 கொல்லப்படுவதற்காக இரண்டு குற்றவாளிகளும் இயேசுவோடு வழி நடத்திச்செல்லப்பட்டார்கள். 33 இயேசுவும், அக்குற்றவாளிகளும் “கபாலம்” என்று அழைக்கப்பட்ட இடத்துக்கு அழைத்துச் செல்லப்பட்டார்கள். அங்கு வீரர்கள் இயேசுவைச் சிலுவையில் அறைந்தார்கள். அவர்கள் குற்றவாளிகளையும் சிலுவையில் அறைந்தார்கள். ஒரு குற்றவாளியை இயேசுவின் வலது பக்கத்திலும், இன்னொரு குற்றவாளியை இயேசுவின் இடது பக்கத்திலும் சிலுவையில் அறைந்தார்கள்.
34 இயேசு, “தந்தையே, என்னைக் கொல்கிற இந்த மக்களை மன்னித்தருளுங்கள். அவர்கள் செய்துகொண்டிருப்பதை அவர்கள் அறியாமல் இருக்கிறார்கள்” என்றார்.
இயேசுவின் ஆடைகளை எடுப்பது யார் என்று சீட்டுப்போட்டுப் பார்த்தார்கள். 35 இயேசுவைப் பார்த்தபடி மக்கள் நின்றனர். யூத அதிகாரிகள் இயேசுவைப் பார்த்து நகைத்தனர். அவர்கள், “தேவனால் தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப்பட்ட கிறிஸ்து என்றால் அவனே தன்னைக் காப்பாற்றிக்கொள்ளட்டும். அவன் பிற மக்களைக் காப்பாற்றவில்லையா?” என்றார்கள்.
36 வீரர்களும் கூட இயேசுவைப் பார்த்துச் சிரித்து எள்ளி நகையாடினார்கள். அவர்கள் இயேசுவை நெருங்கி புளித்த திராட்சை இரசத்தைக் கொடுத்தனர். 37 வீரர்கள், “நீ யூதர்களின் ராஜாவானால் உன்னைக் காப்பாற்றிக்கொள்” என்றனர். 38 சிலுவையில் மேல் பகுதியில் “இவன் யூதர்களின் ராஜா” என்ற சொற்கள் எழுதப்பட்டிருந்தன.
39 சிலுவையில் அறையப்பட்ட குற்றவாளிகளில் ஒருவன் இயேசுவுக்கு எதிராகத் தீய சொற்களைச் சொல்லிக்கொண்டிருந்தான். “நீ கிறிஸ்து அல்லவா? உன்னைக் காப்பாற்றிக்கொள். எங்களையும் காப்பாற்று” என்றான்.
40 ஆனால் இன்னொரு குற்றவாளி அவனைத் தடுத்தான். அவன், “நீ தேவனுக்கு பயப்பட வேண்டும். நாம் எல்லாரும் விரைவில் இறந்து போவோம். 41 நீயும், நானும் குற்றவாளிகள். நாம் செய்த குற்றங்களுக்கான விலையைக் கொடுக்க வேண்டியிருப்பதால் நீயும் நானும் கொல்லப்பட வேண்டியவர்கள். ஆனால் இம்மனிதரோ (இயேசு) எந்தத் தவறும் செய்ததில்லை” என்றான். 42 பின்பு இக்குற்றவாளி இயேசுவை நோக்கி, “இயேசுவே, உங்கள் இராஜ்யத்தை ஆரம்பிக்கும்போது என்னை நினைவுகூர்ந்துகொள்ளுங்கள்” என்றான்.
43 இயேசு அவனை நோக்கி, “கவனி, நான் சொல்வது உண்மை. இன்று நீ என்னோடு சேர்ந்து பரலோகத்திலிருப்பாய்” என்றார்.
இயேசு மரித்தல்
(மத்தேயு 27:45-56; மாற்கு 15:33-41; யோவான் 19:28-30)
44 அப்போது மதிய வேளை. ஆனால் மதிய நேரம் பின்பு மூன்று மணிவரையிலும் அப்பகுதி முழுவதும் இருள் சூழ்ந்திருந்தது. 45 சூரியன் தென்படவில்லை. தேவாலயத்தின் திரை இரண்டாகக் கிழிந்தது. 46 இயேசு, “பிதாவே, என் ஆவியை உம்மிடம் தருகிறேன்” என்னும் வார்த்தையுடன் இறந்தார்.
47 அங்கு நின்ற இராணுவ அதிகாரி நடந்தவற்றை எல்லாம் பார்த்தான். அவன், “இந்த மனிதன் உண்மையிலேயே தேவ குமாரன்தான் என்பதை அறிவேன்” என்று கூறியவாறே தேவனை வாழ்த்தினான்.
48 இதைப் பார்க்கவென்று நகரிலிருந்து பலரும் வந்திருந்தார்கள். பார்த்ததும் துயரமிகுதியால் மார்பில் அறைந்தபடி வீட்டுக்குத் திரும்பினார்கள். 49 இயேசுவுக்கு மிகவும் நெருக்கமான நண்பர்கள் அங்கு இருந்தார்கள். கலிலேயாவில் இருந்து இயேசுவைத் தொடர்ந்து வந்த சில பெண்களும் அங்கே இருந்தார்கள். அவர்கள் சிலுவைக்கு சற்றே தொலைவில் இவற்றைப் பார்த்தபடி நின்றுகொண்டிருந்தார்கள்.
அரிமத்தியா ஊரின் யோசேப்பு
(மத்தேயு 27:57-61; மாற்கு 15:42-47; யோவான் 19:38-42)
50-51 அரிமத்தியா என்னும் நகரில் இருந்து ஒரு மனிதன் அங்கே வந்திருந்தான். அவன் பெயர் யோசேப்பு. அவன் நல்ல பக்தியுள்ள மனிதன். தேவனின் இராஜ்யத்தின் வருகையை எதிர் நோக்கி இருந்தான். யூதர் அவையில் அவன் ஒரு உறுப்பினன். பிற யூத அதிகாரிகள் இயேசுவைக் கொல்ல முடிவெடுத்தபோது அவன் அதை ஒப்புக்கொள்ளவில்லை. 52 இயேசுவின் உடலைக் கேட்கும்பொருட்டு யோசேப்பு பிலாத்துவிடம் சென்றான். உடலை எடுத்துக்கொள்ள பிலாத்து, யோசேப்புக்கு அனுமதி கொடுத்தான். 53 எனவே யோசேப்பு சிலுவையில் இருந்து இயேசுவின் உடலைக் கீழே இறக்கி ஒரு துணியால் உடலைச் சுற்றினான். பிறகு பாறைக்குள் தோண்டப்பட்டிருந்த ஒரு கல்லறைக்குள் இயேசுவின் உடலை வைத்தான். அக்கல்லறை அதற்கு முன் பயன்படுத்தப்பட்டிருக்கவில்லை. 54 அப்பொழுது ஆயத்த நாளின்[c] இறுதிப்பகுதி நெருங்கியது. சூரியன் மறைந்த பிறகு ஓய்வு நாள் ஆரம்பிக்கும்.
55 கலிலேயாவில் இருந்து இயேசுவோடு வந்திருந்த பெண்கள் யோசேப்பைத் தொடர்ந்தனர். அவர்கள் கல்லறையைப் பார்த்தார்கள். இயேசுவின் உடல் உள்ளே கிடத்தப்பட்டிருந்த இடத்தையும் பார்த்தார்கள். 56 இயேசுவின் உடலில் பூசுவதற்காக மணம்மிக்க பொருள்களைத் தயாரிப்பதற்காக அப்பெண்கள் சென்றார்கள்.
ஓய்வு நாளில் அவர்கள் ஓய்வெடுத்தார்கள். மோசேயின் சட்டம் இவ்வாறு செய்யுமாறு எல்லா மக்களுக்கும் கட்டளை இட்டிருந்தது.

23 The whole company of them rose up and brought him before Pilate. 2 They began to accuse him, saying, “We found this man perverting the nation, forbidding paying taxes to Caesar, and saying that he himself is Christ, a king.”
3 Pilate asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?”
He answered him, “So you say.”
4 Pilate said to the chief priests and the multitudes, “I find no basis for a charge against this man.”
5 But they insisted, saying, “He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee even to this place.”
6 But when Pilate heard Galilee mentioned, he asked if the man was a Galilean. 7 When he found out that he was in Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem during those days.
8 Now when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceedingly glad, for he had wanted to see him for a long time, because he had heard many things about him. He hoped to see some miracle done by him. 9 He questioned him with many words, but he gave no answers. 10 The chief priests and the scribes stood, vehemently accusing him. 11 Herod with his soldiers humiliated him and mocked him. Dressing him in luxurious clothing, they sent him back to Pilate. 12 Herod and Pilate became friends with each other that very day, for before that they were enemies with each other.
13 Pilate called together the chief priests, the rulers, and the people, 14 and said to them, “You brought this man to me as one that perverts the people, and behold, having examined him before you, I found no basis for a charge against this man concerning those things of which you accuse him. 15 Neither has Herod, for I sent you to him, and see, nothing worthy of death has been done by him. 16 I will therefore chastise him and release him.”
17 Now he had to release one prisoner to them at the feast.[a] 18 But they all cried out together, saying, “Away with this man! Release to us Barabbas!”— 19 one who was thrown into prison for a certain revolt in the city, and for murder.
20 Then Pilate spoke to them again, wanting to release Jesus, 21 but they shouted, saying, “Crucify! Crucify him!”
22 He said to them the third time, “Why? What evil has this man done? I have found no capital crime in him. I will therefore chastise him and release him.” 23 But they were urgent with loud voices, asking that he might be crucified. Their voices and the voices of the chief priests prevailed. 24 Pilate decreed that what they asked for should be done. 25 He released him who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, for whom they asked, but he delivered Jesus up to their will.
26 When they led him away, they grabbed one Simon of Cyrene, coming from the country, and laid the cross on him to carry it after Jesus. 27 A great multitude of the people followed him, including women who also mourned and lamented him. 28 But Jesus, turning to them, said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, don’t weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. 29 For behold, the days are coming in which they will say, ‘Blessed are the barren, the wombs that never bore, and the breasts that never nursed.’ 30 Then they will begin to tell the mountains, ‘Fall on us!’ and tell the hills, ‘Cover us.’(A) 31 For if they do these things in the green tree, what will be done in the dry?”
32 There were also others, two criminals, led with him to be put to death. 33 When they came to the place that is called “The Skull”, they crucified him there with the criminals, one on the right and the other on the left.
34 Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.”
Dividing his garments among them, they cast lots. 35 The people stood watching. The rulers with them also scoffed at him, saying, “He saved others. Let him save himself, if this is the Christ of God, his chosen one!”
36 The soldiers also mocked him, coming to him and offering him vinegar, 37 and saying, “If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!”
38 An inscription was also written over him in letters of Greek, Latin, and Hebrew: “THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.”
39 One of the criminals who was hanged insulted him, saying, “If you are the Christ, save yourself and us!”
40 But the other answered, and rebuking him said, “Don’t you even fear God, seeing you are under the same condemnation? 41 And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward for our deeds, but this man has done nothing wrong.” 42 He said to Jesus, “Lord, remember me when you come into your Kingdom.”
43 Jesus said to him, “Assuredly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise.”
44 It was now about the sixth hour,[b] and darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour.[c] 45 The sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was torn in two. 46 Jesus, crying with a loud voice, said, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!” Having said this, he breathed his last.
47 When the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying, “Certainly this was a righteous man.” 48 All the multitudes that came together to see this, when they saw the things that were done, returned home beating their chests. 49 All his acquaintances and the women who followed with him from Galilee stood at a distance, watching these things.
50 Behold, there was a man named Joseph, who was a member of the council, a good and righteous man 51 (he had not consented to their counsel and deed), from Arimathaea, a city of the Jews, who was also waiting for God’s Kingdom. 52 This man went to Pilate, and asked for Jesus’ body. 53 He took it down and wrapped it in a linen cloth, and laid him in a tomb that was cut in stone, where no one had ever been laid. 54 It was the day of the Preparation, and the Sabbath was drawing near. 55 The women who had come with him out of Galilee followed after, and saw the tomb and how his body was laid. 56 They returned and prepared spices and ointments. On the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment.

23 Then the whole assembly rose and led him off to Pilate.(A) 2 And they began to accuse him, saying, “We have found this man subverting our nation.(B) He opposes payment of taxes to Caesar(C) and claims to be Messiah, a king.”(D)
3 So Pilate asked Jesus, “Are you the king of the Jews?”
“You have said so,” Jesus replied.
4 Then Pilate announced to the chief priests and the crowd, “I find no basis for a charge against this man.”(E)
5 But they insisted, “He stirs up the people all over Judea by his teaching. He started in Galilee(F) and has come all the way here.”
6 On hearing this, Pilate asked if the man was a Galilean.(G) 7 When he learned that Jesus was under Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod,(H) who was also in Jerusalem at that time.
8 When Herod saw Jesus, he was greatly pleased, because for a long time he had been wanting to see him.(I) From what he had heard about him, he hoped to see him perform a sign of some sort. 9 He plied him with many questions, but Jesus gave him no answer.(J) 10 The chief priests and the teachers of the law were standing there, vehemently accusing him. 11 Then Herod and his soldiers ridiculed and mocked him. Dressing him in an elegant robe,(K) they sent him back to Pilate. 12 That day Herod and Pilate became friends(L)—before this they had been enemies.
13 Pilate called together the chief priests, the rulers and the people, 14 and said to them, “You brought me this man as one who was inciting the people to rebellion. I have examined him in your presence and have found no basis for your charges against him.(M) 15 Neither has Herod, for he sent him back to us; as you can see, he has done nothing to deserve death. 16 Therefore, I will punish him(N) and then release him.” [17] [a]
18 But the whole crowd shouted, “Away with this man! Release Barabbas to us!”(O) 19 (Barabbas had been thrown into prison for an insurrection in the city, and for murder.)
20 Wanting to release Jesus, Pilate appealed to them again. 21 But they kept shouting, “Crucify him! Crucify him!”
22 For the third time he spoke to them: “Why? What crime has this man committed? I have found in him no grounds for the death penalty. Therefore I will have him punished and then release him.”(P)
23 But with loud shouts they insistently demanded that he be crucified, and their shouts prevailed. 24 So Pilate decided to grant their demand. 25 He released the man who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, the one they asked for, and surrendered Jesus to their will.
The Crucifixion of Jesus(Q)
26 As the soldiers led him away, they seized Simon from Cyrene,(R) who was on his way in from the country, and put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus.(S) 27 A large number of people followed him, including women who mourned and wailed(T) for him. 28 Jesus turned and said to them, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep for yourselves and for your children.(U) 29 For the time will come when you will say, ‘Blessed are the childless women, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!’(V) 30 Then
31 For if people do these things when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?”(X)
32 Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with him to be executed.(Y) 33 When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him there, along with the criminals—one on his right, the other on his left. 34 Jesus said, “Father,(Z) forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”[c](AA) And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.(AB)
35 The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him.(AC) They said, “He saved others; let him save himself if he is God’s Messiah, the Chosen One.”(AD)
36 The soldiers also came up and mocked him.(AE) They offered him wine vinegar(AF) 37 and said, “If you are the king of the Jews,(AG) save yourself.”
38 There was a written notice above him, which read: this is the king of the jews.(AH)
39 One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!”(AI)
40 But the other criminal rebuked him. “Don’t you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence? 41 We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.”(AJ)
42 Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.[d]”(AK)
43 Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”(AL)
The Death of Jesus(AM)
44 It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon,(AN) 45 for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple(AO) was torn in two.(AP) 46 Jesus called out with a loud voice,(AQ) “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.”[e](AR) When he had said this, he breathed his last.(AS)
47 The centurion, seeing what had happened, praised God(AT) and said, “Surely this was a righteous man.” 48 When all the people who had gathered to witness this sight saw what took place, they beat their breasts(AU) and went away. 49 But all those who knew him, including the women who had followed him from Galilee,(AV) stood at a distance,(AW) watching these things.
The Burial of Jesus(AX)
50 Now there was a man named Joseph, a member of the Council, a good and upright man, 51 who had not consented to their decision and action. He came from the Judean town of Arimathea, and he himself was waiting for the kingdom of God.(AY) 52 Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body. 53 Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen cloth and placed it in a tomb cut in the rock, one in which no one had yet been laid. 54 It was Preparation Day,(AZ) and the Sabbath was about to begin.
55 The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee(BA) followed Joseph and saw the tomb and how his body was laid in it. 56 Then they went home and prepared spices and perfumes.(BB) But they rested on the Sabbath in obedience to the commandment.(BC)
