19 பிறகு பிலாத்து இயேசுவை அழைத்துப்போய் சவுக்கால் அடிக்குமாறு கட்டளையிட்டான். 2 போர்ச் சேவகர்கள் முள்ளினால் ஒரு முடியைப் பின்னினர். அவர்கள் அதை இயேசுவின் தலைமீது அணிவித்தனர். பிறகு சிவப்பான அங்கியை அவருக்கு உடுத்தினார்கள். 3 “யூதருடைய ராஜாவே, வாழ்க” என்று அடிக்கடி பலதடவை அவரிடம் வந்து சொன்னார்கள். அவர்கள் இயேசுவை முகத்தில் அறைந்தார்கள்.
4 மீண்டும் பிலாத்து யூதர்களிடம் போய் “பாருங்கள்! நான் உங்களுக்காக இயேசுவை வெளியே கொண்டு வருகிறேன். நான் இவனிடம் ஒரு குற்றமும் காணவில்லை என்று நீங்கள் அறிந்து கொள்ள வேண்டும்” என்றான். 5 பிறகு இயேசு வெளியே வந்தார். அவர் தலையில் முள்முடியும் சரீரத்தில் சிவப்பு அங்கியும் அணிந்திருந்தார். “இதோ அந்த மனிதன்” என்று யூதர்களிடம் பிலாத்து சொன்னான்.
6 பிரதான ஆசாரியரும் யூதக் காவலர்களும் இயேசுவைக் கண்டவுடன் “அவனைச் சிலுவையில் அறையுங்கள்” என்று சத்தமிட்டனர்.
ஆனால் பிலாத்துவோ, “நீங்கள் அவனை அழைத்துப்போய் நீங்களாகவே அவனைச் சிலுவையில் அறையுங்கள். நான் தண்டனை தரும்படியாக இவனுக்கு எதிராக எந்த குற்றத்தையும் கண்டு பிடிக்கவில்லை” என்று கூறிவிட்டான்.
7 யூதர்களோ, “எங்களுக்கென்று ஒரு சட்டம் உண்டு. அதன்படி இவன் சாகவேண்டும். ஏனென்றால் அவன் தன்னை தேவனின் குமாரன் என்று கூறியிருக்கிறான்” என்றனர்.
8 பிலாத்து இவற்றைக் கேட்டதும் மேலும் பயந்தான். 9 பிலாத்து மீண்டும் அரண்மனைக்குள் போனான். அவன் இயேசுவிடம், “நீ எங்கே இருந்து வருகிறாய்?” எனக் கேட்டான். ஆனால் இயேசு அவனுக்குப் பதில் சொல்லவில்லை. 10 அதனால் பிலாத்து, “நீ என்னோடு பேச மறுக்கவா செய்கிறாய்? நான் உன்னை விடுதலை செய்யக்கூடிய அதிகாரத்தில் இருப்பவன். இதனை நினைத்துக்கொள். உன்னைச் சிலுவையில் அறைந்து கொல்லும் அதிகாரமும் எனக்கு இருக்கிறது” என்றான்.
11 “தேவனிடமிருந்து அதிகாரம் வந்தால் ஒழிய நீர் என்மீது எவ்வித அதிகாரமும் செலுத்த முடியாது. எனவே, என்னை உம்மிடம் ஒப்படைத்தவனுக்கு அதிகப் பாவம் உண்டு” என்று இயேசு பதிலுரைத்தார்.
12 இதற்குப் பிறகு இயேசுவை விடுதலை செய்யப் பிலாத்து முயற்சி செய்தான். ஆனால் யூதர்களோ, “எவனொருவன் தன்னை ராஜா என்று கூறுகிறானோ அவன் இராயனின் பகைவன். எனவே, நீங்கள் இயேசுவை விடுதலை செய்தால் நீங்கள் இராயனின் நண்பன் இல்லை என்று பொருள்” எனச் சத்தமிட்டார்கள்.
13 யூதர்கள் சொன்னவற்றைப் பிலாத்து கேட்டான். எனவே, அவன் இயேசுவை அரண்மனையை விட்டு வெளியே இழுத்து வந்தான். யூதர்களின் மொழியில் கபத்தா என்று அழைக்கப்பெறும் கல்தள வரிசை அமைக்கப்பட்ட மேடைக்கு வந்தான். அங்கே இருந்த நீதிபதியின் இருக்கையில் அமர்ந்தான். 14 அப்பொழுது அது பஸ்காவுக்குத் தயாராகும் நாளாகவும் மதியவேளையாகவும் இருந்தது. பிலாத்து யூதர்களிடம் “இதோ உங்கள் ராஜா” என்றான்.
15 அதற்கு யூதர்கள், “அவனை அப்புறப்படுத்துங்கள்! அவனை அப்புறப்படுத்துங்கள்! அவனைச் சிலுவையில் அறைந்து கொல்லுங்கள்” என்று சத்தமிட்டனர்.
அவர்களிடம் பிலாத்து, “உங்களது ராஜாவை நான் சிலுவையில் அறைந்து கொல்ல வேண்டும் என்று விரும்புகிறீர்களா?” என்று கேட்டான்.
அதற்குத் தலைமை ஆசாரியன், “எங்களது ஒரே ராஜா இராயன் மட்டுமே” என்று பதில் சொன்னான். 16 அதனால் பிலாத்து இயேசுவைச் சிலுவையில் அறைந்து கொல்லும்படி அவரை அவர்களிடம் ஒப்படைத்தான்.
சிலுவையில் இயேசு
(மத்தேயு 27:32-44; மாற்கு 15:21-32; லூக்கா 23:26-39)
சேவகர்கள் இயேசுவை இழுத்துக்கொண்டுபோனார்கள். 17 இயேசு தனது சிலுவையைத் தானே சுமந்துகொண்டுபோனார். அவர் மண்டை ஓடுகளின் இடம் என்னும் கபாலஸ்தலம் என்று அழைக்கப்படும் இடத்துக்குப்போனார். (இதனை யூத மொழியில் கொல்கதா என்று அழைப்பர்) 18 கொல்கதாவில் சிலுவையில் இயேசுவை ஆணிகளால் அறைந்தார்கள். அவர்கள் வேறு இருவரையும் சிலுவையில் அறைந்தனர். இயேசுவை நடுவிலும் ஏனைய இருவரை இரு பக்கத்திலும் நட்டு வைத்தனர்.
19 பிலாத்து ஓர் அறிவிப்பு எழுதி அதனை இயேசுவின் சிலுவையின் மேல் பொருத்தி வைத்தான். அந்த அறிவிப்பில் “நசரேயனாகிய இயேசு, யூதர்களின் ராஜா” என்று எழுதப்பட்டிருந்தது. 20 அந்த அறிவிப்பு யூத மொழியிலும் இலத்தீன், கிரேக்க மொழிகளிலும் இருந்தது. ஏராளமான யூதர்கள் இந்த அறிவிப்பை வாசித்தனர். ஏனென்றால் இயேசுவைச் சிலுவையில் அறைந்த அந்த இடம் நகரத்தின் அருகில் இருந்தது.
21 யூதர்களின் தலைமை ஆசாரியன் பிலாத்துவிடம், “யூதருடைய ராஜா என்று எழுதக்கூடாது. அவன் தன்னை யூதருடைய ராஜா என்று சொன்னதாக எழுதவேண்டும்” என்றான்.
22 அதற்குப் பிலாத்து, “நான் எழுதினதை மாற்றி எழுதமாட்டேன்” என்று கூறிவிட்டான்.
23 ஆணிகளால் இயேசுவைச் சிலுவையில் அறைந்த பிற்பாடு, சேவகர்கள் அவரது ஆடையை எடுத்துக்கொண்டனர். அவர்கள் அதனை நான்கு பாகங்களாகப் பங்கு வைத்தனர். ஒவ்வொரு சேவகனும் ஒரு பாகத்தைப் பெற்றான். அவர்கள் அவரது அங்கியையும் எடுத்தனர். அது தையலில்லாமல் ஒரே துணியாக நெய்யப்பட்டிருந்தது. 24 எனவே சேவகர்கள் தங்களுக்குள், “இதனை நாம் கிழித்து பங்கு போட வேண்டாம். அதைவிட இது யாருக்கு என்று சீட்டுப் போட்டு எடுத்துக்கொள்வோம்” என சொல்லிக் கொண்டனர்.
“அவர்கள் என் ஆடைகளைத் தங்களுக்குள் பங்கிட்டனர்.
என் அங்கியின் மேல் சீட்டுப்போட்டார்கள்”(A)
என்று வேதவாக்கியம் கூறியது நிறைவேறும்படிக்கு இவ்வாறு நிகழ்ந்தது.
25 இயேசுவின் தாயார் சிலுவையின் அருகில் நின்றிருந்தார். அவரது தாயின் சகோதரியும், கிலேயோப்பா மரியாளும், மகதலேனா மரியாளும் நின்றுகொண்டிருந்தார்கள். 26 இயேசு அவருடைய தாயைப் பார்த்தார். அவரால் பெரிதும் நேசிக்கப்பட்ட சீஷனையும் அங்கே பார்த்தார். அவர் தன் தாயிடம், “அன்பான பெண்ணே, அதோ உன் குமாரன்” என்றார். 27 பிறகு இயேசு தன் சீஷனிடம், “இதோ உன்னுடைய தாய்” என்றார். அதற்குப்பின் அந்த சீஷன் இயேசுவின் தாயைத் தன் வீட்டிற்குத் தன்னோடு அழைத்துச் சென்றான்.
இயேசுவின் மரணம்

28 பின்பு எல்லாம் முடிந்தது என்பதை இயேசு அறிந்தார். வேதவாக்கியம் நிறைவேறும்பொருட்டு அவர், “நான் தாகமாயிருக்கிறேன்”[a] என்றார். 29 காடி நிறைந்த பாத்திரம் ஒன்று அங்கே வைக்கப்பட்டிருந்தது. அங்கே நின்ற சேவகர்கள் கடற்பஞ்சைக் காடியிலே தோய்த்தார்கள். அதனை ஈசோப்புத் தண்டில் மாட்டினார்கள். பிறகு அதனை இயேசுவின் வாயருகே நீட்டினார்கள். 30 இயேசு காடியைச் சுவைத்தார். பிறகு அவர், “எல்லாம் முடிந்தது” என்றார். இயேசு தன் தலையைச் சாய்த்து இறந்துபோனார்.
31 அது ஆயத்தநாளாக இருந்தது. மறுநாள் சிறப்பான ஓய்வு நாள். ஓய்வு நாளில் சரீரங்கள் உயிரோடு சிலுவையில் இருப்பதை யூதர்கள் விரும்பவில்லை. எனவே, அவர்களைச் சாகடிக்க கால்களை முறித்துக் கொல்ல வேண்டும் என இதற்கான உத்தரவை யூதர்கள் பிலாத்துவிடம் கேட்டார்கள். அதோடு அவர்களின் பிணங்களைச் சிலுவையில் இருந்து அப்புறப்படுத்தவும் அனுமதி பெற்றனர். 32 எனவே, சேவகர்கள் இயேசுவின் ஒருபுறத்தில் சிலுவையில் அறையப்பட்டவனிடம் வந்து அவன் கால்களை முறித்தனர். பிறகு அவர்கள் இயேசுவின் மறுபுறத்தில் சிலுவையில் அறையப்பட்டவனிடம் வந்து அவன் கால்களையும் முறித்தனர். 33 அவர்கள் இயேசுவிடம் வந்தபோது அவர் ஏற்கெனவே இறந்திருந்தார். எனவே அவரது கால்களை அவர்கள் முறிக்கவில்லை.
34 ஆனால் ஒரு சேவகன் தனது ஈட்டியால் இயேசுவின் விலாவில் குத்தினான். அதிலிருந்து இரத்தமும் நீரும் வெளியே வந்தது. 35 (இவ்வாறு நிகழ்வதைப் பார்த்தவன் அதைப்பற்றிக் கூறுகிறான். அவனே அதைக் கூறுவதால் அதனை நீங்களும் நம்ப முடியும். அவன் சொல்கின்றவை எல்லாம் உண்மை. அவன் சொல்வது உண்மையென்று அவன் அறிந்திருக்கிறான்.) 36 “அவரது எலும்புகள் எதுவும் முறிக்கப்படுவதில்லை”(B) என்று வேதவாக்கியங்களில் சொல்லப்பட்டவை நிறைவேறும்படி இவ்வாறு நிகழ்ந்தது.
37 அத்துடன் “மக்கள் தாங்கள் ஈட்டியால் குத்தினவரைப் பார்ப்பார்கள்”(C) என்றும் வேதவாக்கியத்தில் இன்னொரு இடத்தில் சொல்லப்பட்டிருக்கிறது.
இயேசுவின் அடக்கம்
(மத்தேயு 27:57-61; மாற்கு 15:42-47; லூக்கா 23:50-56)
38 பிறகு அரிமத்தியா ஊரானான யோசேப்பு எனப்படும் மனிதன் பிலாத்துவிடம் வந்து இயேசுவின் சரீரத்தைக் கேட்டான். (இவன் இயேசுவைப் பின்பற்றினவர்களில் ஒருவன். ஆனால் அவன் யூதர்களுக்குப் பயந்து இதைப்பற்றி இதுவரை மக்களிடம் சொல்லவில்லை). யோசேப்பு இயேசுவின் சரீரத்தை எடுத்துச்செல்ல, பிலாத்து அனுமதி தந்தான். ஆகையால் யோசேப்பு வந்து இயேசுவின் சரீரத்தை எடுத்துப் போனான்.
39 நிக்கோதேமு யோசேப்போடு சென்றான். இவன் ஏற்கெனவே ஒரு நாள் இரவு இயேசுவிடம் வந்து அவரோடு பேசியிருக்கிறான். அவன் 100 இராத்தல்[b] வாசனைமிக்க கரியபோளமும் வெள்ளைப் போளமும் கலந்து கொண்டுவந்தான். 40 அவர்கள் இருவரும் இயேசுவின் சரீரத்தை எடுத்துப்போனார்கள். அவர்கள் அந்த சரீரத்தை வாசனைத் திரவியங்களோடு கூட துணிகளினால் சுற்றினார்கள். (இதுதான் யூதர்கள் இறந்தவர்களை அடக்கம் செய்யும் முறை.) 41 இயேசு சிலுவையில் அறையப்பட்ட இடத்தில் ஒரு தோட்டம் இருந்தது. அங்கு ஒரு கல்லறை இருந்தது. அதில் இதுவரை எந்த சரீரமும் வைக்கப்படவில்லை. 42 அந்தக் கல்லறையில் இயேசுவை வைத்தார்கள். அன்று யூதருடைய ஆயத்த நாளாக இருந்தது. அத்துடன் அந்த இடம் நகரத்தின் அருகில் இருந்தது.

The Soldiers Mock Jesus(A)
19 So then (B)Pilate took Jesus and scourged Him. 2 And the soldiers twisted a crown of thorns and put it on His head, and they put on Him a purple robe. 3 [a]Then they said, “Hail, King of the Jews!” And they (C)struck Him with their hands.
4 Pilate then went out again, and said to them, “Behold, I am bringing Him out to you, (D)that you may know that I find no fault in Him.”
Pilate’s Decision
5 Then Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate said to them, “Behold the Man!”
6 (E)Therefore, when the chief priests and officers saw Him, they cried out, saying, “Crucify Him, crucify Him!”
Pilate said to them, “You take Him and crucify Him, for I find no fault in Him.”
7 The Jews answered him, (F)“We have a law, and according to [b]our law He ought to die, because (G)He made Himself the Son of God.”
8 Therefore, when Pilate heard that saying, he was the more afraid, 9 and went again into the Praetorium, and said to Jesus, “Where are You from?” (H)But Jesus gave him no answer.
10 Then Pilate said to Him, “Are You not speaking to me? Do You not know that I have [c]power to crucify You, and power to release You?”
11 Jesus answered, (I)“You could have no power at all against Me unless it had been given you from above. Therefore (J)the one who delivered Me to you has the greater sin.”
12 From then on Pilate sought to release Him, but the Jews cried out, saying, “If you let this Man go, you are not Caesar’s friend. (K)Whoever makes himself a king speaks against Caesar.”
13 (L)When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus out and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called The Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha. 14 Now (M)it was the Preparation Day of the Passover, and about the sixth hour. And he said to the Jews, “Behold your King!”
15 But they cried out, “Away with Him, away with Him! Crucify Him!”
Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?”
The chief priests answered, (N)“We have no king but Caesar!”
16 (O)Then he delivered Him to them to be crucified. Then they took Jesus [d]and led Him away.
The King on a Cross(P)
17 (Q)And He, bearing His cross, (R)went out to a place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha, 18 where they crucified Him, and (S)two others with Him, one on either side, and Jesus in the center. 19 (T)Now Pilate wrote a title and put it on the cross. And the writing was:
JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.
20 Then many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin.
21 Therefore the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but, ‘He said, “I am the King of the Jews.” ’ ”
22 Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”
23 (U)Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His garments and made four parts, to each soldier a part, and also the tunic. Now the tunic was without seam, woven from the top in one piece. 24 They said therefore among themselves, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be,” that the Scripture might be fulfilled which says:
(V)“They divided My garments among them,
And for My clothing they cast lots.”
Therefore the soldiers did these things.
Behold Your Mother
25 (W)Now there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of (X)Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and (Y)the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, (Z)“Woman, behold your son!” 27 Then He said to the disciple, “Behold your mother!” And from that hour that disciple took her (AA)to his own home.
It Is Finished
28 After this, Jesus, [e]knowing that all things were now accomplished, (AB)that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!” 29 Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and (AC)they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth. 30 So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, (AD)“It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.
Jesus’ Side Is Pierced
31 (AE)Therefore, because it was the Preparation Day, (AF)that the bodies should not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a (AG)high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. 32 Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who was crucified with Him. 33 But when they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs. 34 But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately (AH)blood and water came out. 35 And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is (AI)true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you may (AJ)believe. 36 For these things were done that the Scripture should be fulfilled, (AK)“Not one of His bones shall be broken.” 37 And again another Scripture says, (AL)“They shall look on Him whom they pierced.”
Jesus Buried in Joseph’s Tomb(AM)
38 (AN)After this, Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly, (AO)for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took the body of Jesus. 39 And (AP)Nicodemus, who at first came to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of (AQ)myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds. 40 Then they took the body of Jesus, and (AR)bound it in strips of linen with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury. 41 Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. 42 So (AS)there they laid Jesus, (AT)because of the Jews’ Preparation Day, for the tomb was nearby.

The Crucifixion
So they took Jesus, 17 and (Y)he went out, (Z)bearing his own cross, to the place called The Place of a Skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha. 18 (AA)There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them. 19 Pilate (AB)also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.” 20 Many of the Jews read this inscription, for (AC)the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Aramaic, in Latin, and in Greek. 21 So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but rather, ‘This man said, I am King of the Jews.’” 22 Pilate answered, (AD)“What I have written I have written.”
23 (AE)When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his garments and divided them into four parts, one part for each soldier; also his tunic.[d] But the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom, 24 so they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be.” (AF)This was to fulfill the Scripture which says,
(AG)“They divided my garments among them,
and for my clothing they cast lots.”

The Death of Jesus
28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now (AL)finished, said ((AM)to fulfill the Scripture), (AN)“I thirst.” 29 A jar full of sour wine stood there, (AO)so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. 30 When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, (AP)“It is finished,” and he bowed his head and (AQ)gave up his spirit.
Jesus' Side Is Pierced
31 Since it was (AR)the day of Preparation, and (AS)so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was (AT)a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away. 32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other (AU)who had been crucified with him. 33 But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34 But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out (AV)blood and water. 35 (AW)He who saw it has borne witness—(AX)his testimony is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth—(AY)that you also may believe. 36 (AZ)For these things took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled: (BA)“Not one of his bones (BB)will be broken.” 37 And again another Scripture says, (BC)“They will look on him whom they have pierced.”
Jesus Is Buried
38 (BD)After these things Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly (BE)for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took away his body. 39 (BF)Nicodemus also, who earlier had come to Jesus[e] by night, came (BG)bringing a mixture of (BH)myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds[f] in weight. 40 So they took the body of Jesus and (BI)bound it in (BJ)linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. 41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was a (BK)garden, and (BL)in the garden a new tomb (BM)in which no one had yet been laid. 42 So because of the Jewish (BN)day of Preparation, (BO)since the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there.

19 Then therefore, Pilate took Jesus, and scourged him.
2 And the soldiers platting a crown of thorns, put it upon his head; and they put on him a purple garment.
3 And they came to him, and said: Hail, king of the Jews; and they gave him blows.
4 Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith to them: Behold, I bring him forth unto you, that you may know that I find no cause in him.
5 (Jesus therefore came forth, bearing the crown of thorns and the purple garment.) And he saith to them: Behold the Man.
6 When the chief priests, therefore, and the servants, had seen him, they cried out, saying: Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate saith to them: Take him you, and crucify him: for I find no cause in him.
7 The Jews answered him: We have a law; and according to the law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.
8 When Pilate therefore had heard this saying, he feared the more.
9 And he entered into the hall again, and he said to Jesus: Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer.
10 Pilate therefore saith to him: Speakest thou not to me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and I have power to release thee?
11 Jesus answered: Thou shouldst not have any power against me, unless it were given thee from above. Therefore, he that hath delivered me to thee, hath the greater sin.
12 And from henceforth Pilate sought to release him. But the Jews cried out, saying: If thou release this man, thou art not Caesar's friend. For whosoever maketh himself a king, speaketh against Caesar.
13 Now when Pilate had heard these words, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat, in the place that is called Lithostrotos, and in Hebrew Gabbatha.
14 And it was the parasceve of the pasch, about the sixth hour, and he saith to the Jews: Behold your king.
15 But they cried out: Away with him; away with him; crucify him. Pilate saith to them: Shall I crucify your king? The chief priests answered: We have no king but Caesar.
16 Then therefore he delivered him to them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him forth.
17 And bearing his own cross, he went forth to that place which is called Calvary, but in Hebrew Golgotha.
18 Where they crucified him, and with him two others, one on each side, and Jesus in the midst.
19 And Pilate wrote a title also, and he put it upon the cross. And the writing was: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.
20 This title therefore many of the Jews did read: because the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, in Greek, and in Latin.
21 Then the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate: Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am the King of the Jews.
22 Pilate answered: What I have written, I have written.
23 The soldiers therefore, when they had crucified him, took his garments, (and they made four parts, to every soldier a part,) and also his coat. Now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout.
24 They said then one to another: Let us not cut it, but let us cast lots for it, whose it shall be; that the scripture might be fulfilled, saying: They have parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture they have cast lots. And the soldiers indeed did these things.
25 Now there stood by the cross of Jesus, his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalen.
26 When Jesus therefore had seen his mother and the disciple standing whom he loved, he saith to his mother: Woman, behold thy son.
27 After that, he saith to the disciple: Behold thy mother. And from that hour, the disciple took her to his own.
28 Afterwards, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, said: I thirst.
29 Now there was a vessel set there full of vinegar. And they, putting a sponge full of vinegar and hyssop, put it to his mouth.
30 Jesus therefore, when he had taken the vinegar, said: It is consummated. And bowing his head, he gave up the ghost.
31 Then the Jews, (because it was the parasceve,) that the bodies might not remain on the cross on the sabbath day, (for that was a great sabbath day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.
32 The soldiers therefore came; and they broke the legs of the first, and of the other that was crucified with him.
33 But after they were come to Jesus, when they saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs.
34 But one of the soldiers with a spear opened his side, and immediately there came out blood and water.
35 And he that saw it, hath given testimony, and his testimony is true. And he knoweth that he saith true; that you also may believe.
36 For these things were done, that the scripture might be fulfilled: You shall not break a bone of him.
37 And again another scripture saith: They shall look on him whom they pierced.

42 There, therefore, because of the parasceve of the Jews, they laid Jesus, because the sepulchre was nigh at hand.
