Jesus Before Pilate
23 Then their whole assembly rose up and (A)brought Him before Pilate. 2 (B)And they began to accuse Him, saying, “We found this man (C)misleading our nation and (D)forbidding to pay taxes to Caesar, and saying that He Himself is [a]Christ, a King.” 3 So Pilate asked Him, saying, “Are You the King of the Jews?” And He answered him and said, “(E)You yourself say it.” 4 Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, “(F)I find no guilt in this man.” 5 But they kept on insisting, saying, “He stirs up the people, teaching all over Judea, (G)starting from Galilee even as far as this place.”
6 Now when Pilate heard this, he asked whether the man was a Galilean. 7 And when he learned that He belonged to Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent Him to (H)Herod, who himself also was in Jerusalem in those days.
Jesus Before Herod
8 Now when Herod saw Jesus, he rejoiced greatly; for (I)he had wanted to see Him for a long time, because he had been hearing about Him and was hoping to see some [b]sign performed by Him. 9 And he questioned Him [c]at some length, but (J)He answered him nothing. 10 And the chief priests and the scribes were standing there, vehemently accusing Him. 11 And Herod with his soldiers, after treating Him with contempt and mocking Him, (K)dressed Him in a bright robe and sent Him back to Pilate. 12 Now (L)Herod and Pilate became friends with one another that very day; for before they had been at enmity with each other.
Pilate Grants the Crowd’s Request
13 And Pilate summoned the chief priests and the (M)rulers and the people, 14 and said to them, “You brought this man to me as one who [d](N)incites the people to rebellion, and behold, having examined Him before you, I (O)have found in this man no guilt of what you are accusing Him. 15 No, nor has (P)Herod, for he sent Him back to us; and behold, nothing deserving death has been done by Him. 16 Therefore I will (Q)punish Him and release Him.” 17 [e][Now he was obliged to release to them at the feast one prisoner.]
18 But they cried out all together, saying, “(R)Away with this man, and release for us Barabbas!” 19 (He had been thrown into prison for an insurrection made in the city and for murder.) 20 But again Pilate addressed them, wanting to release Jesus, 21 but they kept on calling out, saying, “Crucify, crucify Him!” 22 And he said to them a third time, “Why, what evil has this man done? I have found in Him no guilt worthy of death; therefore I will (S)punish Him and release Him.” 23 But they were insistent, with loud voices asking that He be crucified. And their voices were prevailing. 24 And Pilate pronounced sentence that their demand be granted. 25 And he released the man they were asking for who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, but he delivered Jesus to their will.
Simon Carries the Cross
26 (T)And when they led Him away, they took hold of a man, Simon of (U)Cyrene, coming in from the country, and placed on him the cross to carry behind Jesus.
27 And following Him was a large multitude of the people, and of women who were [f](V)mourning and lamenting Him. 28 But Jesus, turning to them, said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, stop crying for Me, but cry for yourselves and for your children. 29 For behold, the days are coming when they will say, ‘(W)Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bore, and the breasts that never nursed.’ 30 Then they will begin to (X)say to the mountains, ‘Fall on us,’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us.’ 31 For if they do these things [g]when the tree is green, what will happen [h]when it is dry?”
32 (Y)Now two others also, who were criminals, were being led away to be put to death with Him.
The Crucifixion
33 (Z)And when they came to the place called [i]The Skull, there they crucified Him and the criminals, one on the right and the other on the left. 34 [j]But Jesus was saying, “(AA)Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.” (AB)And they cast lots, dividing up His garments among themselves. 35 And the people stood by, looking on. And even the (AC)rulers were scoffing at Him, saying, “He saved others; (AD)let Him save Himself if this is the [k]Christ of God, His Chosen One.” 36 And the soldiers also mocked Him, coming up to Him, (AE)offering Him sour wine, 37 and saying, “(AF)If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself!” 38 Now there was also an inscription above Him, “(AG)THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.”
39 (AH)And one of the criminals hanging there was blaspheming Him, saying, “Are You not the [l]Christ? (AI)Save Yourself and us!” 40 But the other answered, and rebuking him said, “Do you not even fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? 41 And we indeed are suffering justly, for we are receiving [m]what we deserve for what we have done; but this man has done nothing wrong.” 42 And he was saying, “Jesus, remember me when You come [n]in Your kingdom!” 43 And He said to him, “Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in (AJ)Paradise.”
44 (AK)And it was now about [o](AL)the sixth hour, and darkness [p]fell over the whole land until [q]the ninth hour, 45 [r]because the sun was obscured. And (AM)the veil of the [s]sanctuary was torn [t]in two. 46 And Jesus, (AN)crying out with a loud voice, said, “Father, (AO)into Your hands I commit My spirit.” Having said this, He breathed His last. 47 (AP)Now when the centurion saw what had happened, he began (AQ)praising God, saying, “Certainly this man was righteous.” 48 And all the crowds who came together for this spectacle, when they observed what had happened, were returning, [u](AR)beating their chests. 49 (AS)And all His acquaintances and (AT)the women who accompanied Him from Galilee were standing at a distance, watching these things.
Jesus Is Buried
50 (AU)And behold, a man named Joseph, who was a (AV)Council member, a good and righteous man 51 (he had not consented to their counsel and action), a man from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, who was (AW)waiting for the kingdom of God; 52 this man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. 53 And he took it down and wrapped it in a linen cloth, and laid Him in a tomb cut into the rock, where no one had ever lain. 54 It was [v](AX)Preparation day, and the Sabbath was about to [w]begin. 55 Now (AY)the women, who had come with Him from Galilee, followed and beheld the tomb and how His body was laid. 56 Then after they returned, they (AZ)prepared spices and perfumes.
And (BA)on the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment.

23 (A)И дигна се цялото множество, и Го поведоха към Пилата,
2 (B)и почнаха да Го обвиняват, говорейки: намерихме Тогова, че развратява народа ни и забранява да се дава кесарю данък, като казва за Себе Си, че бил Христос Цар.
3 (C)А Пилат Го попита и каза: Ти ли си Царят на иудеите? А Той отговори и му рече: ти казваш.
4 Пилат рече на първосвещениците и на народа: аз не намирам никаква вина у Тогова Човека.
5 Но те настояваха да казват, че Той бунтува народа, като поучава по цяла Иудея, начевайки от Галилея дотук.
6 Пилат, като чу за Галилея, попита: нима Човекът е галилеец?
7 И като узна, че Той е подвластен на Ирода, изпрати Го при Ирода, който през тия дни беше тъй също в Иерусалим.
8 (D)А Ирод, като видя Иисуса, много се зарадва, понеже отдавна желаеше да Го види, тъй като беше слушал много за Него, и се надяваше да види някое чудо да стане от Него,
9 и Му задаваше много въпроси, но Той нищо му не отговаряше.
10 А първосвещениците и книжниците стояха и силно Го обвиняваха.
11 (E)Но Ирод с войниците си, като Го унизи и подигра, облече Го в светла дреха и Го изпрати назад при Пилата.
12 И него ден Пилат и Ирод станаха приятели помежду си, понеже по-рано враждуваха един против други.
13 А Пилат, като повика първосвещениците, началниците и народа,
14 (F)каза им: доведохте ми Тоя Човек като развратител на народа; а ето, аз изследвах пред вас, и не намерих у Тогози Човека никаква вина от онова, в каквото Го обвинявате;
15 но нито Ирод намери, понеже Го пратих и при него; и ето, нищо достойно за смърт Той не е извършил;
16 и тъй, след като Го накажа, ще Го пусна.
17 А той трябваше за празника да им пуска един затворник.
18 (G)Но целият народ закрещя: премахни Тогова! а пусни ни Варава.
19 А Варава беше хвърлен в тъмница за извършен в града бунт и убийство.
20 Пилат отново издигна глас, като желаеше да пусне Иисуса.
21 Но те крещяха: разпни Го, разпни!
22 Той и трети път им рече: та какво зло е сторил Тоя? Аз не намерих в Него нищо да заслужава смърт; затова след като Го накажа, ще Го пусна.
23 Но те настояваха с голям вик да изискват да бъде разпнат; и викът техен и тоя на първосвещениците надделя.
24 И Пилат реши да бъде, според както искат те,
25 и пусна им хвърления в тъмницата за бунт и убийство, когото искаха, а Иисуса предаде на волята им.
26 И когато Го поведоха, уловиха някого си Симона Киринеец, който идеше от нива, и сложиха върху му кръста, за да го носи след Иисуса.
27 И след Него вървеше голямо множество народ и жени, които плачеха и ридаеха за Него.
28 А Иисус, като се обърна към тях, рече: дъщери иерусалимски, не плачете за Мене, а плачете за себе си и за чедата си;
29 понеже, ето, наближават дни, когато ще се каже: блазе на неплодни, и на утроби неродили, и на гърди некърмили!
30 (H)Тогава ще почнат да казват на планините: паднете върху ни! и на хълмовете: затрупайте ни!
31 Защото, ако това правят със зеленото дърво, какво ще бъде със сухото?
32 Водеха и двама злодейци, за да бъдат погубени с Него.
33 (I)И когато отидоха на мястото, наречено Лобно, там разпнаха Него и злодейците, единия отдясно, а другия отляво.
34 (J)А Иисус говореше: Отче! прости им, понеже не знаят, що правят. И като деляха дрехите Му, хвърлиха жребие.
35 А народът стоеше и гледаше. Подгавряха се заедно с народа и началниците, казвайки: други спаси, нека спаси и Себе Си, ако Този е Христос, избраникът Божий.
36 Също и войниците се подиграваха с Него, като се приближаваха и Му поднасяха оцет,
37 и казваха: ако си Ти Иудейският Цар, спаси се Сам.
38 И над Него имаше надпис, написан на гръцки, латински и еврейски: Този е Царят Иудейски.
39 Един от увисналите на кръста злодейци Го хулеше и казваше: ако си Ти Христос, спаси Себе Си и нас.
40 А другият, като заговори, мъмреше тогова и казваше: та и от Бога ли се не боиш ти, когато и сам си осъден на същото?
41 А ние сме осъдени справедливо, защото получаваме заслуженото според делата си; но Тоя нищо лошо не е сторил.
42 (K)И казваше на Иисуса: спомни си за мене, Господи, кога дойдеш в царството Си!
43 И отговори му Иисус: истина ти казвам: днес ще бъдеш с Мене в рая.
44 (L)Беше вече около шестия час, и настана мрак по цялата земя до деветия час;
45 и потъмня слънцето, и храмовата завеса се раздра през средата.
46 Иисус, като извика с висок глас, рече: Отче! в Твоите ръце предавам духа Си. И това като каза, издъхна.
47 А стотникът, като видя станалото, прослави Бога и рече: наистина, Тоя Човек е бил праведник.
48 И целият народ, който се бе събрал на това зрелище, като видя станалото, връщаше се, удряйки се в гърди.
49 А стояха надалеч и гледаха това всичките Му познайници и жените, които вървяха подире Му от Галилея.
50 (M)И ето, някой си, на име Иосиф, съветник, човек добър и справедлив,
51 – той не бе се съгласил с решението и деянията им, – из Ариматея, иудейски град, който очакваше тъй също царството Божие,
52 дойде при Пилата и измоли тялото Иисусово;
53 и като Го сне, обви в плащаница и Го положи в гроб, изсечен в скала, дето никой не бе още полаган.
54 Тоя ден беше петък, и настъпваше вече събота.
55 Вървяха подире и жените, които бяха дошли с Иисуса от Галилея, и видяха гроба и как бе положено тялото Му;

23 Then the whole assembly rose and led him off to Pilate.(A) 2 And they began to accuse him, saying, “We have found this man subverting our nation.(B) He opposes payment of taxes to Caesar(C) and claims to be Messiah, a king.”(D)
3 So Pilate asked Jesus, “Are you the king of the Jews?”
“You have said so,” Jesus replied.
4 Then Pilate announced to the chief priests and the crowd, “I find no basis for a charge against this man.”(E)
5 But they insisted, “He stirs up the people all over Judea by his teaching. He started in Galilee(F) and has come all the way here.”
6 On hearing this, Pilate asked if the man was a Galilean.(G) 7 When he learned that Jesus was under Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod,(H) who was also in Jerusalem at that time.
8 When Herod saw Jesus, he was greatly pleased, because for a long time he had been wanting to see him.(I) From what he had heard about him, he hoped to see him perform a sign of some sort. 9 He plied him with many questions, but Jesus gave him no answer.(J) 10 The chief priests and the teachers of the law were standing there, vehemently accusing him. 11 Then Herod and his soldiers ridiculed and mocked him. Dressing him in an elegant robe,(K) they sent him back to Pilate. 12 That day Herod and Pilate became friends(L)—before this they had been enemies.
13 Pilate called together the chief priests, the rulers and the people, 14 and said to them, “You brought me this man as one who was inciting the people to rebellion. I have examined him in your presence and have found no basis for your charges against him.(M) 15 Neither has Herod, for he sent him back to us; as you can see, he has done nothing to deserve death. 16 Therefore, I will punish him(N) and then release him.” [17] [a]
18 But the whole crowd shouted, “Away with this man! Release Barabbas to us!”(O) 19 (Barabbas had been thrown into prison for an insurrection in the city, and for murder.)
20 Wanting to release Jesus, Pilate appealed to them again. 21 But they kept shouting, “Crucify him! Crucify him!”
22 For the third time he spoke to them: “Why? What crime has this man committed? I have found in him no grounds for the death penalty. Therefore I will have him punished and then release him.”(P)
23 But with loud shouts they insistently demanded that he be crucified, and their shouts prevailed. 24 So Pilate decided to grant their demand. 25 He released the man who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, the one they asked for, and surrendered Jesus to their will.
The Crucifixion of Jesus(Q)
26 As the soldiers led him away, they seized Simon from Cyrene,(R) who was on his way in from the country, and put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus.(S) 27 A large number of people followed him, including women who mourned and wailed(T) for him. 28 Jesus turned and said to them, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep for yourselves and for your children.(U) 29 For the time will come when you will say, ‘Blessed are the childless women, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!’(V) 30 Then
31 For if people do these things when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?”(X)
32 Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with him to be executed.(Y) 33 When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him there, along with the criminals—one on his right, the other on his left. 34 Jesus said, “Father,(Z) forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”[c](AA) And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.(AB)
35 The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him.(AC) They said, “He saved others; let him save himself if he is God’s Messiah, the Chosen One.”(AD)
36 The soldiers also came up and mocked him.(AE) They offered him wine vinegar(AF) 37 and said, “If you are the king of the Jews,(AG) save yourself.”
38 There was a written notice above him, which read: this is the king of the jews.(AH)
39 One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!”(AI)
40 But the other criminal rebuked him. “Don’t you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence? 41 We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.”(AJ)
42 Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.[d]”(AK)
43 Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”(AL)
The Death of Jesus(AM)
44 It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon,(AN) 45 for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple(AO) was torn in two.(AP) 46 Jesus called out with a loud voice,(AQ) “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.”[e](AR) When he had said this, he breathed his last.(AS)
47 The centurion, seeing what had happened, praised God(AT) and said, “Surely this was a righteous man.” 48 When all the people who had gathered to witness this sight saw what took place, they beat their breasts(AU) and went away. 49 But all those who knew him, including the women who had followed him from Galilee,(AV) stood at a distance,(AW) watching these things.
The Burial of Jesus(AX)
50 Now there was a man named Joseph, a member of the Council, a good and upright man, 51 who had not consented to their decision and action. He came from the Judean town of Arimathea, and he himself was waiting for the kingdom of God.(AY) 52 Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body. 53 Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen cloth and placed it in a tomb cut in the rock, one in which no one had yet been laid. 54 It was Preparation Day,(AZ) and the Sabbath was about to begin.
55 The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee(BA) followed Joseph and saw the tomb and how his body was laid in it. 56 Then they went home and prepared spices and perfumes.(BB) But they rested on the Sabbath in obedience to the commandment.(BC)
