The Servant of the Lord

49 Listen to me, (A)O coastlands,
    and give attention, you peoples (B)from afar.
(C)The Lord called me from the womb,
    from the body of my mother he named my name.
(D)He made my mouth like a sharp sword;
    (E)in the shadow of his hand he hid me;
he made me a polished arrow;
    in his quiver he hid me away.
And he said to me, “You are my servant,
    Israel, (F)in whom I will be glorified.”[a]
(G)But I said, “I have labored in vain;
    I have spent my strength for nothing and vanity;
yet surely my right is with the Lord,
    and my recompense with my God.”

(H)And now the Lord says,
    he (I)who formed me from the womb to be his servant,
to bring Jacob back to him;
    and that Israel might be gathered to him—
for (J)I am honored in the eyes of the Lord,
    and my God has become my strength—
he says:
“It is too light a thing that you should be my servant
    to raise up the tribes of Jacob
    and to bring back the preserved of Israel;
(K)I will make you (L)as a light for the nations,
    that (M)my salvation may reach to the end of the earth.”

Thus says the Lord,
    (N)the Redeemer of Israel and his Holy One,
(O)to one deeply despised, abhorred by the nation,
    the servant of rulers:
(P)“Kings shall see and arise;
    princes, and they shall prostrate themselves;
because of the Lord, who is faithful,
    the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you.”

The Restoration of Israel

Thus says the Lord:
(Q)“In a (R)time of favor I have answered you;
    in a day of salvation I have helped you;
I will keep you (S)and give you
    as a covenant to the people,
to establish the land,
    (T)to apportion the desolate heritages,
(U)saying to the prisoners, ‘Come out,’
    to those who are in darkness, ‘Appear.’
(V)They shall feed along the ways;
    on all bare heights shall be their pasture;
10 (W)they shall not hunger or thirst,
    neither scorching wind nor sun shall strike them,
for he who has pity on them (X)will lead them,
    and by springs of water will guide them.
11 (Y)And I will make all my mountains a road,
    and my highways shall be raised up.
12 (Z)Behold, these shall come from afar,
    and behold, (AA)these from the north and from the west,[b]
    and these from the land of Syene.”[c]

13 (AB)Sing for joy, O heavens, and exult, O earth;
    break forth, O mountains, into singing!
For the Lord (AC)has comforted his people
    and will have compassion on his afflicted.

14 But Zion said, (AD)“The Lord has forsaken me;
    my Lord has forgotten me.”

15 (AE)“Can a woman forget her nursing child,
    that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb?
Even these may forget,
    yet I will not forget you.
16 Behold, (AF)I have engraved you on the palms of my hands;
    your walls are continually before me.
17 Your builders make haste;[d]
    (AG)your destroyers and those who laid you waste go out from you.
18 (AH)Lift up your eyes around and see;
    they all gather, they come to you.
(AI)As I live, declares the Lord,
    (AJ)you shall put them all on as an ornament;
    you shall bind them on as a bride does.

19 “Surely your waste and your desolate places
    and your devastated land—
(AK)surely now you will be too narrow for your inhabitants,
    and those who swallowed you up will be far away.
20 (AL)The children of your bereavement
    will yet say in your ears:
(AM)‘The place is too narrow for me;
    make room for me to dwell in.’
21 Then you will say in your heart:
    ‘Who has borne me these?
(AN)I was bereaved and barren,
    exiled and put away,
    but who has brought up these?
Behold, I was left alone;
    from where have these come?’”

22 Thus says the Lord God:
“Behold, I will lift up my hand to the nations,
    (AO)and raise my signal to the peoples;
(AP)and they shall bring your sons in their arms,[e]
    and your daughters shall be carried on their shoulders.
23 (AQ)Kings shall be your foster fathers,
    and their queens your nursing mothers.
(AR)With their faces to the ground they shall bow down to you,
    and (AS)lick the dust of your feet.
Then you will know that I am the Lord;
    (AT)those who wait for me (AU)shall not be put to shame.”

24 Can the prey be taken from the mighty,
    or the captives of a tyrant[f] be rescued?
25 For thus says the Lord:
(AV)“Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken,
    and the prey of the tyrant be rescued,
for I will contend with those who contend with you,
    and I will save your children.
26 (AW)I will make your oppressors eat their own flesh,
    and they shall be drunk (AX)with their own blood as with wine.
Then all flesh shall know
    that (AY)I am the Lord your Savior,
    and your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.”

Israel's Sin and the Servant's Obedience

50 Thus says the Lord:
“Where is (AZ)your mother's certificate of divorce,
    with which (BA)I sent her away?
Or (BB)which of my creditors is it
    to whom I have sold you?
(BC)Behold, for your iniquities you were sold,
    and for your transgressions your mother was sent away.
(BD)Why, when I came, was there no man;
    why, when I called, was there no one to answer?
(BE)Is my hand shortened, that it cannot redeem?
    Or have I no power to deliver?
(BF)Behold, by my rebuke (BG)I dry up the sea,
    (BH)I make the rivers a desert;
(BI)their fish stink for lack of water
    and die of thirst.
(BJ)I clothe the heavens with blackness
    and make sackcloth their covering.”

The Lord God has given (BK)me
    the tongue of those who are taught,
that (BL)I may know how to sustain with a word
    (BM)him who is weary.
Morning by morning he awakens;
    he awakens my ear
    to hear as those who are taught.
(BN)The Lord God has opened my ear,
    (BO)and I was not rebellious;
    I turned not backward.
(BP)I gave my back to those who strike,
    and my cheeks to those who pull out the beard;
I hid not my face
    from disgrace and spitting.

But the Lord God helps me;
    therefore I have not been disgraced;
(BQ)therefore I have set my face like a flint,
    and I know that I shall not be put to shame.
    (BR)He who vindicates me is near.
Who will contend with me?
    Let us stand up together.
Who is my adversary?
    Let him come near to me.
(BS)Behold, the Lord God helps me;
    who will declare me guilty?
Behold, all of them will wear out like a garment;
    the moth will eat them up.

10 Who among you fears the Lord
    and obeys (BT)the voice of his servant?
(BU)Let him who walks in darkness
    and has no light
trust in the name of the Lord
    and rely on his God.
11 Behold, all you who kindle a fire,
    who equip yourselves with burning torches!
Walk by the light of your fire,
    and by the torches that you have kindled!
(BV)This you have from my hand:
    you shall lie down in torment.

The Lord's Comfort for Zion

51 (BW)“Listen to me, you who pursue righteousness,
    you who seek the Lord:
look to the rock from which you were hewn,
    and to the quarry from which you were dug.
Look to Abraham your father
    and to Sarah who bore you;
for (BX)he was but one when I called him,
    that I might bless him and multiply him.
For the Lord (BY)comforts Zion;
    he comforts all her waste places
and makes her wilderness like (BZ)Eden,
    her desert like (CA)the garden of the Lord;
(CB)joy and gladness will be found in her,
    thanksgiving and the voice of song.

(CC)“Give attention to me, my people,
    and give ear to me, my nation;
(CD)for a law[g] will go out from me,
    and I will set my justice for a light to the peoples.
(CE)My righteousness draws near,
    my salvation has gone out,
    and my arms will judge the peoples;
(CF)the coastlands hope for me,
    and for my arm they wait.
(CG)Lift up your eyes to the heavens,
    and look at the earth beneath;
(CH)for the heavens vanish like smoke,
    the earth will wear out like a garment,
    and they who dwell in it will die in like manner;[h]
(CI)but my salvation will be forever,
    and my righteousness will never be dismayed.

(CJ)“Listen to me, you who know righteousness,
    the people (CK)in whose heart is my law;
(CL)fear not the reproach of man,
    nor be dismayed at their revilings.
(CM)For the moth will eat them up like a garment,
    and the worm will eat them like wool,
(CN)but my righteousness will be forever,
    and my salvation to all generations.”

(CO)Awake, awake, (CP)put on strength,
    O (CQ)arm of the Lord;
awake, (CR)as in days of old,
    the generations of long ago.
Was it not you who cut (CS)Rahab in pieces,
    who pierced (CT)the dragon?
10 (CU)Was it not you who dried up the sea,
    the waters of the great deep,
who made the depths of the sea a way
    for the redeemed to pass over?
11 (CV)And the ransomed of the Lord shall return
    and come to Zion with singing;
everlasting joy shall be upon their heads;
    they shall obtain gladness and joy,
    and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

12 “I, I am he (CW)who comforts you;
    who are you that you are afraid of (CX)man who dies,
    of the son of man who is made (CY)like grass,
13 and have forgotten the Lord, your Maker,
    (CZ)who stretched out the heavens
    and (DA)laid the foundations of the earth,
and you fear continually all the day
    because of the wrath of (DB)the oppressor,
when he sets himself to destroy?
    And where is the wrath of (DC)the oppressor?
14 (DD)He who is bowed down shall speedily be released;
    he shall not die and go down (DE)to the pit,
    neither shall his bread be lacking.
15 I am the Lord your God,
    (DF)who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar—
    the Lord of hosts is his name.
16 (DG)And I have put my words in your mouth
    (DH)and covered you in the shadow of my hand,
(DI)establishing[i] the heavens
    and (DJ)laying the foundations of the earth,
    and saying to Zion, ‘You are my people.’”

17 (DK)Wake yourself, wake yourself,
    stand up, O Jerusalem,
(DL)you who have drunk from the hand of the Lord
    the cup of his wrath,
who have drunk to the dregs
    the bowl, (DM)the cup of staggering.
18 (DN)There is none to guide her
    among all the sons she has borne;
there is none to take her by the hand
    among all the sons she has brought up.
19 (DO)These two things have happened to you—
    who will console you?—
devastation and destruction, famine and sword;
    who will comfort you?[j]
20 (DP)Your sons have fainted;
    they lie at the head of every street
    like an (DQ)antelope (DR)in a net;
they are full of the wrath of the Lord,
    the rebuke of your God.

21 (DS)Therefore hear this, you who are afflicted,
    who are drunk, but not with wine:
22 Thus says your Lord, the Lord,
    your God (DT)who pleads the cause of his people:
“Behold, I have taken from your hand (DU)the cup of staggering;
the bowl of my wrath you shall drink no more;
23 (DV)and I will put it into the hand of your tormentors,
    (DW)who have said to you,
    ‘Bow down, that we may pass over’;
and (DX)you have made your back like the ground
    and like the street for them to pass over.”

The Lord's Coming Salvation

52 (DY)Awake, awake,
    put on your strength, O Zion;
(DZ)put on your beautiful garments,
    O Jerusalem, (EA)the holy city;
(EB)for there shall no more come into you
    the uncircumcised and the unclean.
(EC)Shake yourself from the dust and arise;
    be seated, O Jerusalem;
(ED)loose the bonds from your neck,
    O captive daughter of Zion.

For thus says the Lord: (EE)“You were sold for nothing, and (EF)you shall be redeemed without money.” For thus says the Lord God: (EG)“My people went down at the first into Egypt to sojourn there, and the Assyrian oppressed them for nothing.[k] Now therefore what have I here,” declares the Lord, “seeing that my people are taken away for nothing? Their rulers wail,” declares the Lord, “and (EH)continually all the day my name is despised. Therefore my people shall know my name. (EI)Therefore in that day they shall know that it is I who speak; here I am.”

(EJ)How beautiful upon the mountains
    are the feet of him who brings good news,
who publishes peace, (EK)who brings good news of happiness,
    who publishes salvation,
    who says to Zion, “Your God reigns.”
The voice of (EL)your watchmen—they lift up their voice;
    together they sing for joy;
(EM)for eye to eye they see
    the return of the Lord to Zion.
(EN)Break forth together into singing,
    (EO)you waste places of Jerusalem,
for (EP)the Lord has comforted his people;
    he has redeemed Jerusalem.
10 (EQ)The Lord has bared his holy arm
    before the eyes of all the nations,
(ER)and all the ends of the earth shall see
    the salvation of our God.

11 (ES)Depart, depart, go out from there;
    touch no unclean thing;
go out from the midst of her; purify yourselves,
    (ET)you who bear the vessels of the Lord.
12 For you shall not (EU)go out in haste,
    and you shall not go in flight,
(EV)for the Lord will go before you,
    (EW)and the God of Israel will be your rear guard.

The Lord's Chosen Servant

42 (A)Behold (B)my servant, whom I uphold,
    my chosen, (C)in whom my soul delights;
(D)I have put my Spirit upon him;
    (E)he will bring forth justice to the nations.
He will not cry aloud or lift up his voice,
    or make it heard in the street;
(F)a bruised reed he will not break,
    and a faintly burning wick he will not quench;
    (G)he will faithfully bring forth justice.
He will not grow faint or be discouraged[a]
    till he has established justice in the earth;
    and (H)the coastlands wait for his law.

Thus says God, the Lord,
    who created the heavens (I)and stretched them out,
    who spread out the earth and what comes from it,
(J)who gives breath to the people on it
    and spirit to those who walk in it:
“I am the Lord; (K)I have called you[b] in righteousness;
    I will take you by the hand and keep you;
I will give you (L)as a covenant for the people,
    (M)a light for the nations,
    (N)to open the eyes that are blind,
to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon,
    (O)from the prison those who sit in darkness.
I am the Lord; that is my name;
    (P)my glory I give to no other,
    nor my praise to carved idols.
Behold, the former things have come to pass,
    (Q)and new things I now declare;
before they spring forth
    I tell you of them.”

The Servant of the Lord

49 Listen to me, (A)O coastlands,

(C)The Lord called me from the womb,

He Was Pierced for Our Transgressions

13 Behold, (A)my servant shall act wisely;[a]
    he shall be high and lifted up,
    and shall be exalted.
14 As many were astonished at you—
    (B)his appearance was so marred, beyond human semblance,
    and his form beyond that of the children of mankind—
15 so (C)shall he sprinkle[b] many nations.
    (D)Kings shall shut their mouths because of him,
(E)for that which has not been told them they see,
    and that which they have not heard they understand.
53 (F)Who has believed what he has heard from us?[c]
    And to whom has (G)the arm of the Lord been revealed?
For he grew up before him like a young plant,
    (H)and like a root out of dry ground;
(I)he had no form or majesty that we should look at him,
    and no beauty that we should desire him.
(J)He was despised and rejected[d] by men,
    a man of sorrows[e] and acquainted with[f] grief;[g]
and as one from whom men hide their faces[h]
    he was despised, and (K)we esteemed him not.

(L)Surely he has borne our griefs
    and carried our sorrows;
yet we esteemed him stricken,
    (M)smitten by God, and afflicted.
(N)But he was pierced for our transgressions;
    he was crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,
    (O)and with his wounds we are healed.
(P)All we like sheep have gone astray;
    we have turned—every one—to his own way;
(Q)and the Lord has laid on him
    the iniquity of us all.

He was oppressed, and he was afflicted,
    (R)yet he opened not his mouth;
(S)like a (T)lamb that is led to the slaughter,
    and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent,
    so he opened not his mouth.
By oppression and judgment he was taken away;
    and as for his generation, (U)who considered
that he was cut off out of the land of the living,
    stricken for the transgression of my people?
And they made his grave with the wicked
    (V)and with a rich man in his death,
although (W)he had done no violence,
    and there was no deceit in his mouth.

10 Yet (X)it was the will of the Lord to crush him;
    he has put him to grief;[i]
(Y)when his soul makes[j] an offering for guilt,
    he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days;
(Z)the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.
11 Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see[k] and be satisfied;
by his knowledge shall (AA)the righteous one, my servant,
    (AB)make many to be accounted righteous,
    (AC)and he shall bear their iniquities.
12 (AD)Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many,[l]
    (AE)and he shall divide the spoil with the strong,[m]
because he poured out his soul to death
    and was numbered with the transgressors;
(AF)yet he bore the sin of many,
    and makes intercession for the transgressors.

Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

47 (A)While he was still speaking, (B)Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a great crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the elders of the people. 48 Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man; seize him.” 49 And he came up to Jesus at once and said, “Greetings, (C)Rabbi!” And he kissed him. 50 Jesus said to him, (D)“Friend, (E)do what you came to do.”[a] Then they came up and laid hands on Jesus and seized him. 51 And behold, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his (F)sword and struck the servant[b] of the high priest and cut off his ear. 52 Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back into its place. For (G)all who take the sword will perish by the sword. 53 (H)Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me (I)more than twelve (J)legions of angels? 54 (K)But how then should the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must be so?” 55 At that hour Jesus said to the crowds, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me? Day after day (L)I sat in the temple (M)teaching, and you did not seize me. 56 But (N)all this has taken place that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled.” (O)Then all the disciples left him and fled.

Jesus Before Caiaphas and the Council

57 (P)Then (Q)those who had seized Jesus led him to (R)Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders had gathered. 58 And (S)Peter was following him at a distance, as far as (T)the courtyard of the high priest, and going inside he sat with (U)the guards to see the end. 59 Now the chief priests and the whole council[c] (V)were seeking false testimony against Jesus that they might put him to death, 60 but they found none, (W)though many false witnesses came forward. At last (X)two came forward 61 and said, “This man said, (Y)‘I am able to (Z)destroy the temple of God, and to rebuild it in three days.’” 62 And the high priest stood up and said, “Have you no answer to make? What is it that these men testify against you?”[d] 63 (AA)But Jesus remained silent. (AB)And the high priest said to him, (AC)“I adjure you by (AD)the living God, (AE)tell us if you are (AF)the Christ, (AG)the Son of God.” 64 Jesus said to him, (AH)“You have said so. But I tell you, from now on (AI)you will see the Son of Man (AJ)seated at the right hand of Power and (AK)coming on the clouds of heaven.” 65 Then the high priest (AL)tore his robes and said, (AM)“He has uttered blasphemy. What further witnesses do we need? You have now heard his blasphemy. 66 What is your judgment?” They answered, (AN)“He deserves death.” 67 Then (AO)they spit in his face (AP)and (AQ)struck him. And some slapped him, 68 saying, “Prophesy to us, you (AR)Christ! Who is it that struck you?”

Peter Denies Jesus

69 (AS)Now Peter was sitting outside (AT)in the courtyard. And a servant girl came up to him and said, “You also were with Jesus the Galilean.” 70 But he denied it before them all, saying, “I do not know what you mean.” 71 And when he went out to the entrance, another servant girl saw him, and she said to the bystanders, “This man was with Jesus (AU)of Nazareth.” 72 And again he denied it with an oath: “I do not know the man.” 73 After a little while the bystanders came up and said to Peter, “Certainly you too are one of them, for (AV)your accent betrays you.” 74 Then he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, “I do not know the man.” And immediately the rooster crowed. 75 And Peter remembered the saying of Jesus, (AW)“Before the rooster crows, you will (AX)deny me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly.

Jesus Delivered to Pilate

27 (AY)When morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people (AZ)took counsel against Jesus to put him to death. And they bound him and (BA)led him away and (BB)delivered him over to (BC)Pilate the governor.

Judas Hangs Himself

Then when (BD)Judas, his betrayer, saw that Jesus[e] was condemned, (BE)he changed his mind and brought back (BF)the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders, saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” They said, “What is that to us? (BG)See to it yourself.” And throwing down the pieces of silver into the temple, (BH)he departed, and he went and hanged himself. But the chief priests, taking the pieces of silver, said, “It is not lawful to put them into (BI)the treasury, since it is blood money.” So they took counsel and bought with them the potter's field as a burial place for strangers. Therefore (BJ)that field has been called the Field of Blood (BK)to this day. (BL)Then was fulfilled what had been spoken by the prophet Jeremiah, saying, (BM)“And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him on whom a price had been set by some of the sons of Israel, 10 and they gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord directed me.”

Jesus Before Pilate

11 (BN)Now Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, “Are you (BO)the King of the Jews?” Jesus said, (BP)“You have said so.” 12 (BQ)But when he was accused by the chief priests and elders, he gave no answer. 13 Then Pilate said to him, (BR)“Do you not hear how many things they testify against you?” 14 But he gave him no answer, not even to a single charge, so that the governor was greatly amazed.

The Crowd Chooses Barabbas

15 (BS)Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to release for the crowd any one prisoner whom they wanted. 16 And they had then a notorious prisoner called Barabbas. 17 So when they had gathered, Pilate said to them, “Whom do you want me to release for you: Barabbas, or (BT)Jesus who is called Christ?” 18 For he knew that it was out (BU)of envy that they had delivered him up. 19 Besides, while he was sitting on (BV)the judgment seat, his wife sent word to him, “Have nothing to do with (BW)that righteous man, for I have suffered much because of him today (BX)in a dream.” 20 Now the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to (BY)ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus. 21 The governor again said to them, “Which of the two do you want me to release for you?” And they said, “Barabbas.” 22 Pilate said to them, “Then what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” (BZ)They all said, “Let him be crucified!” 23 And he said, “Why? (CA)What evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Let him be crucified!”

Pilate Delivers Jesus to Be Crucified

24 So when Pilate saw that he was gaining nothing, but rather that (CB)a riot was beginning, he took water and (CC)washed his hands before the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of (CD)this man's blood;[f] (CE)see to it yourselves.” 25 And all the people answered, (CF)“His blood be on us and (CG)on our children!” 26 Then he released for them Barabbas, and having (CH)scourged[g] Jesus, delivered him to be crucified.

Jesus Is Mocked

27 (CI)Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the (CJ)governor's headquarters,[h] and they gathered the whole (CK)battalion[i] before him. 28 And they stripped him and put (CL)a scarlet robe on him, 29 and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on his head and put a reed in his right hand. And kneeling before him, they (CM)mocked him, saying, “Hail, (CN)King of the Jews!” 30 And (CO)they spit on him and took the reed and struck him on the head. 31 And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the robe and put his own clothes on him and (CP)led him away to crucify him.

The Crucifixion

32 (CQ)(CR)As they went out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name. They compelled this man to (CS)carry his cross. 33 (CT)And when they came to a place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull), 34 (CU)they offered him wine to drink, mixed with (CV)gall, but when he tasted it, he would not drink it. 35 And when they had crucified him, (CW)they divided his garments among them by casting lots. 36 Then they sat down and (CX)kept watch over him there. 37 And over his head they put the charge against him, which read, “This is Jesus, (CY)the King of the Jews.” 38 Then two (CZ)robbers were crucified with him, (DA)one on the right and one on the left. 39 And (DB)those who passed by (DC)derided him, (DD)wagging their heads 40 and saying, (DE)“You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself! (DF)If you are (DG)the Son of God, come down from the cross.” 41 So also the chief priests, with the scribes and elders, mocked him, saying, 42 (DH)“He saved others; (DI)he cannot save himself. (DJ)He is the King of Israel; let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. 43 (DK)He trusts in God; let God deliver him now, if he desires him. For he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” 44 (DL)And the robbers who were crucified with him also reviled him in the same way.

The Death of Jesus

45 Now from the sixth hour[j] there was darkness over all the land[k] until the ninth hour.[l] 46 And about the ninth hour Jesus (DM)cried out with a loud voice, saying, (DN)“Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” that is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” 47 And some of the bystanders, hearing it, said, “This man is calling Elijah.” 48 And one of them at once ran and took a sponge, filled it with (DO)sour wine, and put it on a reed and (DP)gave it to him to drink. 49 But the others said, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to save him.” 50 And Jesus (DQ)cried out again with a loud voice and (DR)yielded up his spirit.

51 And behold, (DS)the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And (DT)the earth shook, and the rocks were split. 52 The tombs also were opened. And many bodies of (DU)the saints (DV)who had fallen asleep were raised, 53 and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection they went into (DW)the holy city and appeared to many. 54 (DX)When the centurion and those who were with him, (DY)keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they were filled with awe and said, (DZ)“Truly this was the Son[m] of God!”

55 There were also (EA)many women there, looking on (EB)from a distance, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, (EC)ministering to him, 56 among whom were (ED)Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James and Joseph and (EE)the mother of the sons of Zebedee.

Jesus Is Buried

57 (EF)When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who also was a disciple of Jesus. 58 He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given to him. 59 And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen shroud 60 and (EG)laid it in his own new tomb, (EH)which he had cut in the rock. And he rolled (EI)a great stone to the entrance of the tomb and went away. 61 Mary Magdalene and (EJ)the other Mary were there, sitting opposite the tomb.

The Guard at the Tomb

62 The next day, that is, after the day of (EK)Preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate 63 and said, “Sir, we remember how (EL)that impostor said, while he was still alive, (EM)‘After three days I will rise.’ 64 Therefore order the tomb to be made secure until the third day, (EN)lest his disciples go and steal him away and tell the people, ‘He has risen from the dead,’ and the last fraud will be worse than the first.” 65 Pilate said to them, “You have (EO)a guard[n] of soldiers. Go, make it as secure as you can.” 66 So they went and made the tomb secure by (EP)sealing the stone and setting a guard.

The Resurrection

28 (EQ)Now after the Sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and (ER)the other Mary went to see the tomb. And behold, there was a great earthquake, for (ES)an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it. (ET)His appearance was like lightning, and (EU)his clothing white as snow. And for fear of him the guards trembled and (EV)became like dead men. But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here, for he has risen, (EW)as he said. Come, see the place where he[o] lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and behold, (EX)he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him. See, I have told you.” So they departed quickly from the tomb (EY)with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples. And behold, Jesus (EZ)met them and said, “Greetings!” And they came up and (FA)took hold of his feet and (FB)worshiped him. 10 Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; (FC)go and tell (FD)my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.”

The Report of the Guard

11 While they were going, behold, some of (FE)the guard went into the city and told the chief priests all that had taken place. 12 And when they had assembled with the elders and taken counsel, they gave a sufficient sum of money to the soldiers 13 and said, “Tell people, (FF)‘His disciples came by night and stole him away while we were asleep.’ 14 And if this comes to (FG)the governor's ears, we will (FH)satisfy him and keep you out of trouble.” 15 So they took the money and did as they were directed. And this story has been spread among the Jews (FI)to this day.

The Eternal Covenant of Peace

54 (A)“Sing, O barren one, who did not bear;
    break forth into singing and cry aloud,
    you who have not been in labor!
For the children of (B)the desolate one (C)will be more
    than the children of her who is married,” says the Lord.
(D)“Enlarge the place of your tent,
    and let the curtains of your habitations be stretched out;
do not hold back; lengthen your cords
    and strengthen your stakes.
(E)For you will spread abroad to the right and to the left,
    and your offspring will possess the nations
    and will people the desolate cities.

“Fear not, (F)for you will not be ashamed;
    be not confounded, for you will not be disgraced;
for you will forget the shame of your youth,
    and the reproach of your widowhood you will remember no more.
(G)For your Maker is your husband,
    the Lord of hosts is his name;
(H)and the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer,
    (I)the God of the whole earth he is called.
(J)For the Lord has called you
    like a wife deserted and grieved in spirit,
like a wife of youth when she is cast off,
    says your God.
(K)For a brief moment I deserted you,
    but with great compassion I will gather you.
(L)In overflowing anger for a moment
    I hid my face from you,
(M)but with everlasting love I will have compassion on you,”
    says the Lord, your Redeemer.

“This is like (N)the days of Noah[a] to me:
    as I swore that the waters of Noah
    should no more go over the earth,
so I have sworn that I will not be angry with you,
    and will not rebuke you.
10 For the mountains may depart
    and the hills be removed,
but my steadfast love shall not depart from you,
    and (O)my covenant of peace shall not be removed,”
    says the Lord, who has compassion on you.

11 (P)“O afflicted one, storm-tossed and not comforted,
    behold, (Q)I will set your stones in antimony,
    (R)and lay your foundations with sapphires.[b]
12 I will make your pinnacles of agate,[c]
    your gates of carbuncles,[d]
    and all your wall of precious stones.
13 (S)All your children (T)shall be taught by the Lord,
    (U)and great shall be the peace of your children.
