Capitolele 31—34. Ioan 14—17.
Iosua
31 Moise s-a dus şi a mai spus următoarele cuvinte întregului Israel: 2 „Astăzi”, le-a zis el, „eu sunt(A) în vârstă de o sută douăzeci de ani. Nu voi mai putea merge(B) în fruntea voastră, şi Domnul mi-a zis: ‘Tu să(C) nu treci Iordanul!’ 3 Domnul, Dumnezeul tău, va merge(D) El Însuşi înaintea ta, va nimici neamurile acestea dinaintea ta şi vei pune stăpânire pe ele. Iosua va merge înaintea ta, cum a spus(E) Domnul. 4 Domnul(F) va face neamurilor acestora cum(G) a făcut lui Sihon şi Og, împăraţii amoriţilor, şi ţării lor, pe care a nimicit-o. 5 Domnul(H) vi le va da în mână şi le veţi face după poruncile pe care vi le-am dat. 6 Întăriţi-vă(I) şi îmbărbătaţi-vă! Nu vă temeţi(J) şi nu vă înspăimântaţi de ei, căci Domnul, Dumnezeul tău, va merge El Însuşi(K) cu tine, nu(L) te va părăsi şi nu te va lăsa”. 7 Moise a chemat pe Iosua şi i-a zis în faţa întregului Israel: „Întăreşte-te(M) şi îmbărbătează-te. Căci tu vei intra cu poporul acesta în ţara pe care Domnul a jurat părinţilor lor că le-o va da şi tu îi vei pune în stăpânirea ei. 8 Domnul(N) Însuşi va merge înaintea ta, El Însuşi va fi cu(O) tine, nu te va părăsi şi nu te va lăsa; nu te teme şi nu te înspăimânta!”
Să citească legea
9 Moise a scris legea aceasta şi a încredinţat-o(P) preoţilor, fiii lui Levi, care(Q) duceau chivotul legământului Domnului şi tuturor bătrânilor lui Israel. 10 Moise le-a dat porunca aceasta: „La fiecare şapte ani, pe vremea anului(R) iertării, la(S) Sărbătoarea Corturilor, 11 când tot Israelul va veni să se(T) înfăţişeze înaintea Domnului, Dumnezeului tău, în locul pe care-l va alege El, să citeşti(U) legea aceasta înaintea întregului Israel, în auzul lor. 12 Să strângi poporul, bărbaţii, femeile, copiii şi străinul care va fi în cetăţile tale, ca să audă şi să înveţe să se teamă de Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru, să păzească şi să împlinească toate cuvintele legii acesteia. 13 Pentru ca şi copiii lor, care(V) n-o vor cunoaşte, s-o audă(W) şi să înveţe să se teamă de Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru, în tot timpul cât veţi trăi în ţara pe care o veţi lua în stăpânire, după ce veţi trece Iordanul.” 14 Domnul a zis lui Moise: „Iată(X) că se apropie clipa când vei muri. Cheamă pe Iosua şi înfăţişaţi-vă în cortul întâlnirii. Eu îi voi da(Y) poruncile Mele.” Moise şi Iosua s-au dus şi s-au înfăţişat în cortul întâlnirii. 15 Şi Domnul(Z) S-a arătat în cort, într-un stâlp de nor: şi stâlpul de nor s-a oprit la uşa cortului. 16 Domnul a zis lui Moise: „Iată, tu vei adormi împreună cu părinţii tăi. Şi poporul acesta se va scula(AA) şi va curvi(AB) după dumnezeii străini ai ţării în care intră. Pe Mine(AC) Mă va părăsi şi va călca(AD) legământul Meu, pe care l-am încheiat cu el. 17 În ziua aceea, Mă voi aprinde de mânie împotriva lui. Îi voi(AE) părăsi şi-Mi voi ascunde Faţa(AF) de ei. El va fi prăpădit şi-l vor ajunge o mulţime de rele şi necazuri şi atunci va zice: ‘Oare(AG) nu m-au ajuns aceste(AH) rele din pricină că Dumnezeul meu nu este în mijlocul meu?’ 18 Şi Eu Îmi(AI) voi ascunde Faţa în ziua aceea, din pricina tot răului pe care-l va face, întorcându-se spre alţi dumnezei. 19 Acum, scrieţi-vă cântarea aceasta. Învaţă pe copiii din Israel s-o cânte, pune-le-o în gură, şi cântarea aceasta să-Mi fie martoră(AJ) împotriva copiilor lui Israel. 20 Căci voi duce pe poporul acesta în ţara pe care am jurat părinţilor lui că i-o voi da, ţară unde curge lapte şi miere; el va mânca, se va sătura şi se va îngrăşa(AK), apoi se va întoarce(AL) la alţi dumnezei şi le va sluji, iar pe Mine Mă va nesocoti şi va călca legământul Meu. 21 Când va fi lovit(AM) atunci cu o mulţime de rele şi necazuri, cântarea aceasta, care nu va fi uitată şi pe care uitarea n-o va şterge din gura urmaşilor, va sta ca martoră împotriva acestui popor. Căci Eu îi cunosc(AN) pornirile, care se arată(AO) şi azi, înainte chiar ca să-l fi dus în ţara pe care am jurat că i-o voi da”. 22 În ziua aceea, Moise a scris cântarea aceasta şi a învăţat pe copiii lui Israel s-o cânte. 23 Domnul(AP) a poruncit lui Iosua, fiul lui Nun, şi a zis: „Întăreşte-te(AQ) şi îmbărbătează-te, căci tu vei duce pe copiii lui Israel în ţara pe care am jurat că le-o voi da; şi Eu Însumi voi fi cu tine”. 24 După ce a isprăvit Moise în totul de scris(AR) într-o carte cuvintele legii acesteia, 25 a dat următoarea poruncă leviţilor, care duceau chivotul legământului Domnului: 26 „Luaţi cartea aceasta a legii şi puneţi-o(AS) lângă chivotul legământului Domnului, Dumnezeului vostru, ca să fie acolo ca martoră(AT) împotriva ta. 27 Căci eu(AU) îţi cunosc duhul tău de răzvrătire(AV) şi încăpăţânarea ta cea mare. Dacă vă răzvrătiţi voi împotriva Domnului cât trăiesc eu încă în mijlocul vostru, cu cât mai răzvrătiţi veţi fi după moartea mea! 28 Strângeţi înaintea mea pe toţi bătrânii seminţiilor voastre şi pe căpeteniile oştirii voastre; voi spune cuvintele acestea în faţa lor şi voi lua martor împotriva lor cerul(AW) şi pământul. 29 Căci ştiu că după moartea mea vă(AX) veţi strica şi vă veţi abate de la calea pe care v-am arătat-o şi, în cele din urmă(AY), vă va ajunge(AZ) nenorocirea, dacă veţi face ce este rău înaintea Domnului, până acolo încât să-L mâniaţi prin lucrul mâinilor voastre”. 30 Moise a rostit toate cuvintele cântării acesteia în faţa întregii adunări a lui Israel:
Cântarea lui Moise
32 „Luaţi aminte(BA), ceruri, şi voi vorbi;
Ascultă, pământule, cuvintele gurii mele!
2 Ca ploaia să curgă(BB) învăţăturile mele,
Ca roua să cadă cuvântul meu,
Ca ploaia(BC) repede pe verdeaţă,
Ca picăturile de ploaie pe iarbă!
3 Căci voi vesti Numele Domnului.
Daţi(BD) slavă Dumnezeului nostru!
4 El este(BE) Stânca; lucrările(BF) Lui sunt desăvârşite,
Căci toate(BG) căile Lui sunt drepte;
El este un Dumnezeu(BH) credincios şi fără nedreptate(BI),
El este drept şi curat.
5 Ei s-au stricat(BJ);
Netrebnicia copiilor Lui este ruşinea lor!
Neam îndărătnic(BK) şi stricat!
6 Pe Domnul Îl răsplătiţi(BL) astfel?!
Popor nechibzuit şi fără înţelepciune!
Nu este El oare Tatăl(BM) tău, care te-a făcut(BN),
Te-a întocmit(BO) şi ţi-a dat fiinţă?
7 Adu-ţi aminte de zilele din vechime,
Socoteşte anii, vârstă de oameni după vârstă de oameni,
Întreabă pe tatăl(BP) tău, şi te va învăţa,
Pe bătrânii tăi, şi îţi vor spune.
8 Când Cel Preaînalt a dat(BQ) o moştenire neamurilor,
Când a despărţit(BR) pe copiii oamenilor,
A pus hotare popoarelor
După numărul copiilor lui Israel,
9 Căci partea(BS) Domnului este poporul Lui,
Iacov este partea Lui de moştenire.
10 El l-a găsit într-un ţinut pustiu(BT),
Într-o singurătate plină de urlete înfricoşate;
L-a înconjurat, l-a îngrijit(BU)
Şi l-a păzit(BV) ca lumina ochiului Lui.
11 Ca vulturul(BW) care îşi scutură cuibul,
Zboară deasupra puilor,
Îşi întinde aripile, îi ia
Şi-i poartă pe penele lui:
12 Aşa a călăuzit Domnul singur pe poporul Său,
Şi nu era niciun dumnezeu străin cu El.
13 L-a suit(BX) pe înălţimile ţării,
Şi Israel a mâncat roadele câmpului;
I-a dat să sugă(BY) miere din stâncă,
Untdelemnul care iese din stânca cea mai tare,
14 Untul de la vaci şi laptele oilor,
Cu grăsimea mieilor,
A berbecilor din Basan şi a ţapilor,
Cu grăsimea grâului(BZ),
Şi ai băut vinul, sângele(CA) strugurelui.
15 Israel(CB) s-a îngrăşat şi a azvârlit(CC) din picior;
Te-ai(CD) îngrăşat, te-ai îngroşat şi te-ai lăţit!
Şi a părăsit(CE) pe Dumnezeu, Ziditorul(CF) lui,
A nesocotit Stânca(CG) mântuirii lui,
16 L-au(CH) întărâtat la gelozie prin dumnezei străini,
L-au mâniat prin urâciuni;
17 Au adus jertfe(CI) dracilor, unor idoli care nu sunt dumnezei,
Unor dumnezei pe care nu-i cunoşteau,
Dumnezei noi, veniţi de curând,
De care nu se temuseră părinţii voştri.
18 Ai părăsit Stânca(CJ) cea care te-a născut
Şi ai uitat(CK) pe Dumnezeul care te-a întocmit.
19 Domnul a văzut lucrul(CL) acesta şi S-a mâniat,
S-a supărat(CM) pe fiii şi fiicele Lui.
20 El a zis: ‘Îmi(CN) voi ascunde Faţa de ei
Şi voi vedea care le va fi sfârşitul,
Căci sunt un neam stricat,
Sunt nişte copii(CO) necredincioşi.
21 Mi-au(CP) întărâtat gelozia prin ceea ce nu este Dumnezeu,
M-au mâniat(CQ) prin idolii lor deşerţi.
Şi Eu îi(CR) voi întărâta la gelozie printr-un popor care nu este un popor.
Îi voi mânia printr-un neam fără pricepere.
22 Căci(CS) focul mâniei Mele s-a aprins
Şi va arde până în fundul Locuinţei morţilor,
Va nimici pământul şi roadele lui,
Va arde temeliile munţilor.
23 Voi(CT) îngrămădi toate nenorocirile peste ei,
Îmi voi(CU) arunca toate săgeţile împotriva lor.
24 Vor fi topiţi de foame, stinşi de friguri
Şi de boli cumplite;
Voi trimite în ei dinţii fiarelor(CV) sălbatice
Şi otrava şerpilor.
25 Afară(CW) vor pieri de sabie
Şi înăuntru vor pieri de groază:
Şi tânărul, şi fata,
Şi copilul de ţâţă, ca şi bătrânul.
26 Voiam să(CX) zic: «Îi voi lua cu o suflare»,
Le voi şterge pomenirea dintre oameni!
27 Dar Mă tem de ocările vrăjmaşului,
Mă tem ca nu cumva vrăjmaşii lor să se amăgească
Şi să(CY) zică: «Mâna noastră cea puternică,
Şi nu Domnul a făcut toate aceste lucruri».
28 Ei sunt un neam care şi-a pierdut bunul simţ
Şi nu-i pricepere în ei(CZ).
29 Dacă ar fi fost(DA) înţelepţi, ar înţelege
Şi s-ar gândi(DB) la ce li se va întâmpla.
30 Cum ar urmări unul(DC) singur o mie din ei
Şi cum ar pune doi pe fugă zece mii,
Dacă nu i-ar fi vândut(DD) Stânca,
Dacă nu i-ar fi vândut Domnul?
31 Căci(DE) stânca lor nu este ca Stânca noastră,
Vrăjmaşii noştri înşişi sunt judecători în această privinţă(DF).
32 Ci viţa(DG) lor este din sadul Sodomei
Şi din ţinutul Gomorei;
Strugurii lor sunt struguri otrăviţi,
Bobiţele lor sunt amare;
33 Vinul lor este venin(DH) de şerpi,
Este otravă(DI) cumplită de aspidă.
34 Oare nu este ascuns(DJ) lucrul acesta la Mine,
Pecetluit în comorile Mele?
35 A Mea(DK) este răzbunarea şi
Eu voi răsplăti
Când va începe să le alunece piciorul!
Căci ziua nenorocirii lor(DL) este aproape
Şi ceea ce-i aşteaptă nu va zăbovi.’
36 Domnul(DM) va judeca pe poporul Său,
Dar va avea milă(DN) de robii Săi,
Văzând că puterea le este sleită
Şi că nu(DO) mai este nici rob, nici slobod.
37 El va zice: ‘Unde sunt dumnezeii(DP) lor,
Stânca aceea care le slujea de adăpost,
38 Dumnezeii aceia care mâncau grăsimea jertfelor lor,
Care beau vinul jertfelor lor de băutură?
Să se scoale să vă ajute
Şi să vă ocrotească!
39 Să ştiţi dar că Eu sunt(DQ) Dumnezeu
Şi că nu(DR) este alt dumnezeu afară de Mine;
Eu dau(DS) viaţă şi Eu omor,
Eu rănesc şi Eu tămăduiesc,
Şi nimeni nu poate scoate pe cineva din mâna Mea.
40 Căci Îmi(DT) ridic mâna spre cer
Şi zic: «Cât este de adevărat că trăiesc în veci,
41 Atât este de adevărat că, atunci când voi(DU) ascuţi fulgerul sabiei Mele
Şi voi pune mâna să fac judecată,
Mă voi răzbuna(DV) împotriva potrivnicilor Mei
Şi voi pedepsi pe cei ce Mă urăsc!»
42 Sabia Mea le va înghiţi carnea
Şi-Mi voi îmbăta(DW) săgeţile de sânge,
De sângele celor ucişi şi prinşi,
Din capetele fruntaşilor(DX) vrăjmaşului.’
43 Neamuri, cântaţi(DY) laudele poporului Lui!
Căci Domnul răzbună(DZ) sângele robilor Săi,
El Se răzbună(EA) împotriva potrivnicilor Săi
Şi face ispăşire pentru(EB) ţara Lui, pentru poporul Lui.”
44 Moise a venit şi a rostit toate cuvintele cântării acesteia în faţa poporului; Iosua, fiul lui Nun, era cu el. 45 După ce a isprăvit Moise de rostit toate cuvintele acestea înaintea întregului Israel, 46 le-a zis: „Puneţi-vă(EC) la inimă toate cuvintele pe care vă jur astăzi să le porunciţi copiilor voştri, ca să păzească şi să împlinească toate cuvintele legii acesteia. 47 Căci nu este un lucru fără însemnătate pentru voi; este viaţa(ED) voastră şi prin aceasta vă veţi lungi zilele în ţara pe care o veţi lua în stăpânire, după ce veţi trece Iordanul.” 48 În aceeaşi zi, Domnul(EE) a vorbit lui Moise şi a zis: 49 „Suie-te pe muntele(EF) acesta Abarim, pe muntele Nebo, în ţara Moabului, în faţa Ierihonului, şi priveşte ţara Canaanului pe care o dau în stăpânire copiilor lui Israel. 50 Tu vei muri pe muntele pe care te vei sui şi vei fi adăugat la poporul tău, după cum Aaron(EG), fratele tău, a murit pe muntele Hor şi a fost adăugat la poporul lui, 51 pentru că aţi(EH) păcătuit împotriva Mea în mijlocul copiilor lui Israel, lângă apele Meriba, la Cades, în pustia Ţin, şi nu M-aţi(EI) sfinţit în mijlocul copiilor lui Israel. 52 Tu vei(EJ) vedea doar de departe ţara dinaintea ta, dar nu vei intra în ţara pe care o dau copiilor lui Israel”.
Binecuvântarea rostită de Moise
33 Iată binecuvântarea(EK) cu care Moise, omul(EL) lui Dumnezeu, a binecuvântat pe copiii lui Israel înainte de moartea lui.
2 El a zis:
„Domnul(EM) a venit din Sinai
Şi a răsărit peste ei din Seir,
A strălucit din muntele Paran
Şi a ieşit din mijlocul zecilor de mii(EN) de sfinţi,
Având în dreapta Lui focul legii.
3 Da, El iubeşte(EO) popoarele;
Toţi(EP) sfinţii sunt în mâna Ta.
Ei au stat(EQ) la picioarele Tale,
Au primit(ER) cuvintele Tale.
4 Moise(ES) ne-a dat legea,
Moştenirea(ET) adunării lui Iacov.
5 El era împărat(EU) în Israel(EV)
Când se adunau căpeteniile poporului
Şi seminţiile lui Israel.
6 Trăiască Ruben şi să nu moară
Şi bărbaţii lui să fie mulţi la număr!”
7 Iată ce a zis despre Iuda:
„Ascultă, Doamne, glasul lui Iuda
Şi adu-l la poporul lui.
Puternice să-i fie mâinile(EW)
Şi să-i fii în ajutor(EX) împotriva vrăjmaşilor lui!”
8 Despre Levi a zis:
„Tumim(EY) şi Urim au fost încredinţaţi bărbatului sfânt
Pe care l-ai(EZ) ispitit la Masa
Şi cu care Te-ai certat la apele Meriba.
9 Levi a zis despre tatăl său şi despre mama sa: ‘Nu i-am văzut!’
Şi despre fraţii lui: ‘Nu vă(FA) cunosc!’
Şi despre fraţii lui: ‘Nu vă cunosc!’
Iar de copii n-a vrut să mai ştie.
Căci ei păzesc(FB) Cuvântul Tău
Şi ţin legământul Tău;
10 Ei învaţă(FC) pe Iacov poruncile Tale
Şi pe Israel legea Ta;
Ei pun(FD) tămâie sub nările Tale
Şi ardere-de-tot(FE) pe altarul Tău.
11 Binecuvântează tăria lui, Doamne!
Primeşte lucrarea(FF) mâinilor lui!
Frânge şalele potrivnicilor lui
Şi vrăjmaşii lui să nu se mai scoale!”
12 Despre Beniamin a zis:
„El este preaiubitul Domnului,
El va locui la adăpost lângă Dânsul.
Domnul îl va ocroti totdeauna
Şi se va odihni între umerii Lui.”
13 Despre Iosif a zis:
„Ţara lui va primi de la Domnul, ca semn de binecuvântare(FG),
Cel mai bun dar al cerului, roua(FH),
Cele mai bune ape care sunt jos,
14 Cele mai bune roade ale soarelui,
Cele mai bune roade ale fiecărei luni,
15 Cele mai bune roade din munţii(FI) cei vechi,
Cele mai bune roade de pe dealurile(FJ) cele veşnice,
16 Cele mai bune roade ale pământului şi din tot ce cuprinde el.
Bunăvoinţa(FK) Celui ce S-a arătat în rug
Să vină peste capul(FL) lui Iosif,
Pe creştetul capului domnului fraţilor lui!
17 El are frumuseţea întâiului născut(FM) al taurului;
Coarnele(FN) lui sunt cum sunt coarnele bivolului;
Cu ele va împunge(FO) pe toate popoarele,
Până la marginile pământului:
Ele sunt zecile de(FP) mii ale lui Efraim,
Ele sunt miile lui Manase.”
18 Despre Zabulon a zis:
„Bucură-te(FQ), Zabuloane, de alergările tale
Şi tu, Isahar, de corturile tale!
19 Ei vor chema(FR) popoarele pe munte;
Acolo vor(FS) aduce jertfe de dreptate,
Căci vor suge bogăţia mării
Şi comorile ascunse în nisip.”
20 Despre Gad a zis:
„Binecuvântat să fie cine lărgeşte pe Gad!
Gad se odihneşte ca un leu
şi sfâşie la braţe şi capete.
21 El a ales(FT) cea dintâi parte a ţării,
Căci acolo stă ascunsă moştenirea legiuitorului;
El a mers cu fruntaşii(FU) poporului,
A adus la îndeplinire dreptatea Domnului
Şi poruncile Lui faţă de Israel.”
22 Despre Dan a zis:
„Dan este un pui de leu
Care s-aruncă(FV) din Basan.”
23 Despre Neftali a zis:
„Neftali, sătul(FW) de bunăvoinţă
Şi copleşit cu binecuvântări de la Domnul,
Ia în stăpânire partea de(FX) apus şi miazăzi!”
24 Despre Aşer a zis:
„Binecuvântat(FY) să fie Aşer între copiii lui Israel!
Plăcut să fie fraţilor lui
Şi să-şi înmoaie(FZ) piciorul în untdelemn!
25 Zăvoarele tale să fie de fier şi de aramă(GA)
Şi puterea ta să ţină cât zilele tale!
26 Nimeni(GB) nu este ca Dumnezeul lui Israel(GC),
El trece pe ceruri ca să-ţi vină în ajutor,
Trece(GD) cu măreţie pe nori.
27 Dumnezeul cel veşnic este un loc de adăpost(GE)
Şi sub braţele Lui cele veşnice este un loc de scăpare.
El a izgonit(GF) pe vrăjmaş dinaintea ta
Şi a zis: ‘Nimiceşte-l.’
28 Israel(GG) este fără frică în locuinţa lui,
Izvorul(GH) lui Iacov este deoparte,
Într-o ţară plină de grâu şi de must,
Şi cerul(GI) lui picură roua.
29 Ferice(GJ) de tine, Israele! Cine(GK) este ca tine,
Un popor mântuit de Domnul,
Scutul(GL) care îţi dă ajutor
Şi sabia care te face slăvit?
Vrăjmaşii tăi vor face pe prietenii(GM) înaintea ta,
Şi tu(GN) vei călca peste înălţimile lor.”
Moartea lui Moise
34 Moise s-a suit din câmpia Moabului pe(GO) muntele Nebo, pe vârful muntelui Pisga, în faţa Ierihonului. Şi Domnul i-a arătat(GP) toată ţara: de la Galaad până(GQ) la Dan, 2 tot ţinutul lui Neftali, ţara lui Efraim şi Manase, toată ţara lui Iuda până la Marea(GR) de Apus, 3 partea de miazăzi, împrejurimile Iordanului, valea Ierihonului, cetatea(GS) finicilor, până la Ţoar. 4 Domnul i-a zis: „Aceasta(GT) este ţara pe care am jurat că o voi da lui Avraam, lui Isaac şi lui Iacov, zicând: ‘O voi da seminţei tale.’ Ţi-am arătat(GU) ca s-o vezi cu ochii tăi, dar nu vei intra în ea.” 5 Moise(GV), robul Domnului, a murit acolo, în ţara Moabului, după porunca Domnului. 6 Şi Domnul l-a îngropat în vale, în ţara Moabului, faţă în faţă cu Bet-Peor. Nimeni(GW) nu i-a cunoscut mormântul până în ziua de azi. 7 Moise(GX) era în vârstă de o sută douăzeci de ani când a murit; vederea(GY) nu-i slăbise şi puterea nu-i trecuse. 8 Copiii lui Israel au plâns pe Moise treizeci(GZ) de zile în câmpia Moabului; şi zilele acelea de plâns şi de jale pentru Moise s-au sfârşit. 9 Iosua, fiul lui Nun, era plin(HA) de duhul înţelepciunii, căci Moise(HB) îşi pusese mâinile peste el. Joshua to Succeed Moses
31 Then Moses went out and spoke these words to all Israel: 2 “I am now a hundred and twenty years old(A) and I am no longer able to lead you.(B) The Lord has said to me, ‘You shall not cross the Jordan.’(C) 3 The Lord your God himself will cross(D) over ahead of you.(E) He will destroy these nations(F) before you, and you will take possession of their land. Joshua also will cross(G) over ahead of you, as the Lord said. 4 And the Lord will do to them what he did to Sihon and Og,(H) the kings of the Amorites, whom he destroyed along with their land. 5 The Lord will deliver(I) them to you, and you must do to them all that I have commanded you. 6 Be strong and courageous.(J) Do not be afraid or terrified(K) because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you;(L) he will never leave you(M) nor forsake(N) you.”
7 Then Moses summoned Joshua and said(O) to him in the presence of all Israel, “Be strong and courageous, for you must go with this people into the land that the Lord swore to their ancestors to give them,(P) and you must divide it among them as their inheritance. 8 The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you;(Q) he will never leave you nor forsake you.(R) Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”
Public Reading of the Law
9 So Moses wrote(S) down this law and gave it to the Levitical priests, who carried(T) the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and to all the elders of Israel. 10 Then Moses commanded them: “At the end of every seven years, in the year for canceling debts,(U) during the Festival of Tabernacles,(V) 11 when all Israel comes to appear(W) before the Lord your God at the place he will choose,(X) you shall read this law(Y) before them in their hearing. 12 Assemble the people—men, women and children, and the foreigners residing in your towns—so they can listen and learn(Z) to fear(AA) the Lord your God and follow carefully all the words of this law. 13 Their children,(AB) who do not know this law, must hear it and learn to fear the Lord your God as long as you live in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess.”
Israel’s Rebellion Predicted
14 The Lord said to Moses, “Now the day of your death(AC) is near. Call Joshua(AD) and present yourselves at the tent of meeting, where I will commission him.(AE)” So Moses and Joshua came and presented themselves at the tent of meeting.(AF)
15 Then the Lord appeared at the tent in a pillar of cloud, and the cloud stood over the entrance to the tent.(AG) 16 And the Lord said to Moses: “You are going to rest with your ancestors,(AH) and these people will soon prostitute(AI) themselves to the foreign gods of the land they are entering. They will forsake(AJ) me and break the covenant I made with them. 17 And in that day I will become angry(AK) with them and forsake(AL) them; I will hide(AM) my face(AN) from them, and they will be destroyed. Many disasters(AO) and calamities will come on them, and in that day they will ask, ‘Have not these disasters come on us because our God is not with us?’(AP) 18 And I will certainly hide my face in that day because of all their wickedness in turning to other gods.
19 “Now write(AQ) down this song and teach it to the Israelites and have them sing it, so that it may be a witness(AR) for me against them. 20 When I have brought them into the land flowing with milk and honey, the land I promised on oath to their ancestors,(AS) and when they eat their fill and thrive, they will turn to other gods(AT) and worship them,(AU) rejecting me and breaking my covenant.(AV) 21 And when many disasters and calamities come on them,(AW) this song will testify against them, because it will not be forgotten by their descendants. I know what they are disposed to do,(AX) even before I bring them into the land I promised them on oath.” 22 So Moses wrote(AY) down this song that day and taught it to the Israelites.
23 The Lord gave this command(AZ) to Joshua son of Nun: “Be strong and courageous,(BA) for you will bring the Israelites into the land I promised them on oath, and I myself will be with you.”
24 After Moses finished writing(BB) in a book the words of this law(BC) from beginning to end, 25 he gave this command to the Levites who carried(BD) the ark of the covenant of the Lord: 26 “Take this Book of the Law and place it beside the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God. There it will remain as a witness against you.(BE) 27 For I know how rebellious(BF) and stiff-necked(BG) you are. If you have been rebellious against the Lord while I am still alive and with you, how much more will you rebel after I die! 28 Assemble before me all the elders of your tribes and all your officials, so that I can speak these words in their hearing and call the heavens and the earth to testify against them.(BH) 29 For I know that after my death you are sure to become utterly corrupt(BI) and to turn from the way I have commanded you. In days to come, disaster(BJ) will fall on you because you will do evil in the sight of the Lord and arouse his anger by what your hands have made.”
The Song of Moses
30 And Moses recited the words of this song from beginning to end in the hearing of the whole assembly of Israel:
32 Listen,(BK) you heavens,(BL) and I will speak;
hear, you earth, the words of my mouth.(BM)
2 Let my teaching fall like rain(BN)
and my words descend like dew,(BO)
like showers(BP) on new grass,
like abundant rain on tender plants.
3 I will proclaim(BQ) the name of the Lord.(BR)
Oh, praise the greatness(BS) of our God!
4 He is the Rock,(BT) his works are perfect,(BU)
and all his ways are just.
A faithful God(BV) who does no wrong,
upright(BW) and just is he.(BX)
5 They are corrupt and not his children;
to their shame they are a warped and crooked generation.(BY)
6 Is this the way you repay(BZ) the Lord,
you foolish(CA) and unwise people?(CB)
Is he not your Father,(CC) your Creator,[a]
who made you and formed you?(CD)
7 Remember the days of old;(CE)
consider the generations long past.(CF)
Ask your father and he will tell you,
your elders, and they will explain to you.(CG)
8 When the Most High(CH) gave the nations their inheritance,
when he divided all mankind,(CI)
he set up boundaries(CJ) for the peoples
according to the number of the sons of Israel.[b](CK)
9 For the Lord’s portion(CL) is his people,
Jacob his allotted inheritance.(CM)
10 In a desert(CN) land he found him,
in a barren and howling waste.(CO)
He shielded(CP) him and cared for him;
he guarded him as the apple of his eye,(CQ)
11 like an eagle that stirs up its nest
and hovers over its young,(CR)
that spreads its wings to catch them
and carries them aloft.(CS)
12 The Lord alone led(CT) him;(CU)
no foreign god was with him.(CV)
13 He made him ride on the heights(CW) of the land
and fed him with the fruit of the fields.
He nourished him with honey from the rock,(CX)
and with oil(CY) from the flinty crag,
14 with curds and milk from herd and flock
and with fattened lambs and goats,
with choice rams of Bashan(CZ)
and the finest kernels of wheat.(DA)
You drank the foaming blood of the grape.(DB)
15 Jeshurun[c](DC) grew fat(DD) and kicked;
filled with food, they became heavy and sleek.
They abandoned(DE) the God who made them
and rejected the Rock(DF) their Savior.
16 They made him jealous(DG) with their foreign gods
and angered(DH) him with their detestable idols.
17 They sacrificed(DI) to false gods,(DJ) which are not God—
gods they had not known,(DK)
gods that recently appeared,(DL)
gods your ancestors did not fear.
18 You deserted the Rock, who fathered you;
you forgot(DM) the God who gave you birth.
19 The Lord saw this and rejected them(DN)
because he was angered by his sons and daughters.(DO)
20 “I will hide my face(DP) from them,” he said,
“and see what their end will be;
for they are a perverse generation,(DQ)
children who are unfaithful.(DR)
21 They made me jealous(DS) by what is no god
and angered me with their worthless idols.(DT)
I will make them envious by those who are not a people;
I will make them angry by a nation that has no understanding.(DU)
22 For a fire will be kindled by my wrath,(DV)
one that burns down to the realm of the dead below.(DW)
It will devour(DX) the earth and its harvests(DY)
and set afire the foundations of the mountains.(DZ)
23 “I will heap calamities(EA) on them
and spend my arrows(EB) against them.
24 I will send wasting famine(EC) against them,
consuming pestilence(ED) and deadly plague;(EE)
I will send against them the fangs of wild beasts,(EF)
the venom of vipers(EG) that glide in the dust.(EH)
25 In the street the sword will make them childless;
in their homes terror(EI) will reign.(EJ)
The young men and young women will perish,
the infants and those with gray hair.(EK)
26 I said I would scatter(EL) them
and erase their name from human memory,(EM)
27 but I dreaded the taunt of the enemy,
lest the adversary misunderstand(EN)
and say, ‘Our hand has triumphed;
the Lord has not done all this.’”(EO)
28 They are a nation without sense,
there is no discernment(EP) in them.
29 If only they were wise and would understand this(EQ)
and discern what their end will be!(ER)
30 How could one man chase a thousand,
or two put ten thousand to flight,(ES)
unless their Rock had sold them,(ET)
unless the Lord had given them up?(EU)
31 For their rock is not like our Rock,(EV)
as even our enemies concede.(EW)
32 Their vine comes from the vine of Sodom(EX)
and from the fields of Gomorrah.
Their grapes are filled with poison,(EY)
and their clusters with bitterness.(EZ)
33 Their wine is the venom of serpents,
the deadly poison of cobras.(FA)
34 “Have I not kept this in reserve
and sealed it in my vaults?(FB)
35 It is mine to avenge;(FC) I will repay.(FD)
In due time their foot will slip;(FE)
their day of disaster is near
and their doom rushes upon them.(FF)”
36 The Lord will vindicate his people(FG)
and relent(FH) concerning his servants(FI)
when he sees their strength is gone
and no one is left, slave(FJ) or free.[d]
37 He will say: “Now where are their gods,
the rock they took refuge in,(FK)
38 the gods who ate the fat of their sacrifices
and drank the wine of their drink offerings?(FL)
Let them rise up to help you!
Let them give you shelter!
39 “See now that I myself am he!(FM)
There is no god besides me.(FN)
I put to death(FO) and I bring to life,(FP)
I have wounded and I will heal,(FQ)
and no one can deliver out of my hand.(FR)
40 I lift my hand(FS) to heaven and solemnly swear:
As surely as I live forever,(FT)
41 when I sharpen my flashing sword(FU)
and my hand grasps it in judgment,
I will take vengeance(FV) on my adversaries
and repay those who hate me.(FW)
42 I will make my arrows drunk with blood,(FX)
while my sword devours flesh:(FY)
the blood of the slain and the captives,
the heads of the enemy leaders.”
43 Rejoice,(FZ) you nations, with his people,[e][f]
for he will avenge the blood of his servants;(GA)
he will take vengeance on his enemies(GB)
and make atonement for his land and people.(GC)
44 Moses came with Joshua[g](GD) son of Nun and spoke all the words of this song in the hearing of the people. 45 When Moses finished reciting all these words to all Israel, 46 he said to them, “Take to heart all the words I have solemnly declared to you this day,(GE) so that you may command(GF) your children to obey carefully all the words of this law. 47 They are not just idle words for you—they are your life.(GG) By them you will live long(GH) in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess.”
Moses to Die on Mount Nebo
48 On that same day the Lord told Moses,(GI) 49 “Go up into the Abarim(GJ) Range to Mount Nebo(GK) in Moab, across from Jericho,(GL) and view Canaan,(GM) the land I am giving the Israelites as their own possession. 50 There on the mountain that you have climbed you will die(GN) and be gathered to your people, just as your brother Aaron died(GO) on Mount Hor(GP) and was gathered to his people. 51 This is because both of you broke faith with me in the presence of the Israelites at the waters of Meribah Kadesh(GQ) in the Desert of Zin(GR) and because you did not uphold my holiness among the Israelites.(GS) 52 Therefore, you will see the land only from a distance;(GT) you will not enter(GU) the land I am giving to the people of Israel.”
Moses Blesses the Tribes(GV)
33 This is the blessing(GW) that Moses the man of God(GX) pronounced on the Israelites before his death. 2 He said:
“The Lord came from Sinai(GY)
and dawned over them from Seir;(GZ)
he shone forth(HA) from Mount Paran.(HB)
He came with[h] myriads of holy ones(HC)
from the south, from his mountain slopes.[i]
3 Surely it is you who love(HD) the people;
all the holy ones are in your hand.(HE)
At your feet they all bow down,(HF)
and from you receive instruction,
4 the law that Moses gave us,(HG)
the possession of the assembly of Jacob.(HH)
5 He was king(HI) over Jeshurun[j](HJ)
when the leaders of the people assembled,
along with the tribes of Israel.
7 And this he said about Judah:(HL)
“Hear, Lord, the cry of Judah;
bring him to his people.
With his own hands he defends his cause.
Oh, be his help against his foes!”
8 About Levi(HM) he said:
“Your Thummim and Urim(HN) belong
to your faithful servant.(HO)
You tested(HP) him at Massah;
you contended with him at the waters of Meribah.(HQ)
9 He said of his father and mother,(HR)
‘I have no regard for them.’
He did not recognize his brothers
or acknowledge his own children,
but he watched over your word
and guarded your covenant.(HS)
10 He teaches(HT) your precepts to Jacob
and your law to Israel.(HU)
He offers incense before you(HV)
and whole burnt offerings on your altar.(HW)
11 Bless all his skills, Lord,
and be pleased with the work of his hands.(HX)
Strike down those who rise against him,
his foes till they rise no more.”
12 About Benjamin(HY) he said:
“Let the beloved of the Lord rest secure in him,(HZ)
for he shields him all day long,(IA)
and the one the Lord loves(IB) rests between his shoulders.(IC)”
13 About Joseph(ID) he said:
“May the Lord bless his land
with the precious dew from heaven above
and with the deep waters that lie below;(IE)
14 with the best the sun brings forth
and the finest the moon can yield;
15 with the choicest gifts of the ancient mountains(IF)
and the fruitfulness of the everlasting hills;
16 with the best gifts of the earth and its fullness
and the favor of him who dwelt in the burning bush.(IG)
Let all these rest on the head of Joseph,
on the brow of the prince among[l] his brothers.(IH)
17 In majesty he is like a firstborn bull;
his horns(II) are the horns of a wild ox.(IJ)
With them he will gore(IK) the nations,
even those at the ends of the earth.
Such are the ten thousands of Ephraim;(IL)
such are the thousands of Manasseh.(IM)”
18 About Zebulun(IN) he said:
“Rejoice, Zebulun, in your going out,
and you, Issachar,(IO) in your tents.
19 They will summon peoples to the mountain(IP)
and there offer the sacrifices of the righteous;(IQ)
they will feast on the abundance of the seas,(IR)
on the treasures hidden in the sand.”
20 About Gad(IS) he said:
“Blessed is he who enlarges Gad’s domain!(IT)
Gad lives there like a lion,
tearing at arm or head.
21 He chose the best land for himself;(IU)
the leader’s portion was kept for him.(IV)
When the heads of the people assembled,
he carried out the Lord’s righteous will,(IW)
and his judgments concerning Israel.”
22 About Dan(IX) he said:
“Dan is a lion’s cub,
springing out of Bashan.”
23 About Naphtali(IY) he said:
“Naphtali is abounding with the favor of the Lord
and is full of his blessing;
he will inherit southward to the lake.”
24 About Asher(IZ) he said:
“Most blessed of sons is Asher;
let him be favored by his brothers,
and let him bathe his feet in oil.(JA)
25 The bolts of your gates will be iron and bronze,(JB)
and your strength will equal your days.(JC)
26 “There is no one like the God of Jeshurun,(JD)
who rides(JE) across the heavens to help you(JF)
and on the clouds(JG) in his majesty.(JH)
27 The eternal(JI) God is your refuge,(JJ)
and underneath are the everlasting(JK) arms.
He will drive out your enemies before you,(JL)
saying, ‘Destroy them!’(JM)
28 So Israel will live in safety;(JN)
Jacob will dwell[m] secure
in a land of grain and new wine,
where the heavens drop dew.(JO)
29 Blessed are you, Israel!(JP)
Who is like you,(JQ)
a people saved by the Lord?(JR)
He is your shield and helper(JS)
and your glorious sword.
Your enemies will cower before you,
and you will tread on their heights.(JT)”
The Death of Moses
34 Then Moses climbed Mount Nebo(JU) from the plains of Moab to the top of Pisgah,(JV) across from Jericho.(JW) There the Lord showed(JX) him the whole land—from Gilead to Dan,(JY) 2 all of Naphtali, the territory of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the Mediterranean Sea,(JZ) 3 the Negev(KA) and the whole region from the Valley of Jericho, the City of Palms,(KB) as far as Zoar.(KC) 4 Then the Lord said to him, “This is the land I promised on oath(KD) to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob(KE) when I said, ‘I will give it(KF) to your descendants.’ I have let you see it with your eyes, but you will not cross(KG) over into it.”
5 And Moses the servant of the Lord(KH) died(KI) there in Moab, as the Lord had said. 6 He buried him[n] in Moab, in the valley opposite Beth Peor,(KJ) but to this day no one knows where his grave is.(KK) 7 Moses was a hundred and twenty years old(KL) when he died, yet his eyes were not weak(KM) nor his strength gone.(KN) 8 The Israelites grieved for Moses in the plains of Moab(KO) thirty days,(KP) until the time of weeping and mourning(KQ) was over.
9 Now Joshua son of Nun was filled with the spirit[o] of wisdom(KR) because Moses had laid his hands on him.(KS) So the Israelites listened to him and did what the Lord had commanded Moses.
10 Since then, no prophet(KT) has risen in Israel like Moses,(KU) whom the Lord knew face to face,(KV) 11 who did all those signs and wonders(KW) the Lord sent him to do in Egypt—to Pharaoh and to all his officials(KX) and to his whole land. 12 For no one has(KY) ever shown the mighty power or performed the awesome deeds(KZ) that Moses did in the sight of all Israel.
