Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
The Folly of the Godless and Salvation for Israel
For the music director, according to Mahalath.
A maskil of David.[a]
53 The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.”
They are corrupt and they have done abominable iniquity.
There is none who does good.
2 God looks down from heaven upon the children of humankind
to see whether there is one who has insight,
one who seeks God.
3 All of them[b] have turned back.
They are altogether corrupt.
There is none who does good;
there is not even one.
4 Do not evildoers know,
they who eat my people as though they were eating bread?
They do not call on God.
5 There they are very fearful[c]
where no fear had been,
because God has scattered the bones of him who encamps against you.
You have put them to shame, because God has rejected them.
6 Oh, that from Zion[d] would come salvation for Israel!
When God returns the fortunes[e] of his people,
let Jacob rejoice, let Israel be glad.
The Day of Atonement
26 Then[a] Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, 27 “Surely the Day of Atonement is on the tenth day of the seventh month; it shall be a holy assembly for you, and you shall deny yourselves, and you shall present an offering made by fire to Yahweh. 28 And you must not do any regular work[b] on this very same day,[c] because it is the Day of Atonement to make atonement for you before[d] Yahweh your God. 29 If there is any person who does not deny himself on this very same day,[e] then[f] he shall be cut off from his people. 30 As for[g] any person who does any work on this very same day,[h] I will exterminate that person from the midst of his people. 31 You must not do any work; it is a lasting statute[i] throughout your generations in all your dwellings. 32 It is a Sabbath of complete rest[j] for you, and you shall deny yourselves on the ninth day of the month in the evening—from evening to evening you must observe your extraordinary[k] Sabbath.”
The Feast of Booths
33 Then[l] Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, 34 “Speak to the Israelites,[m] saying, ‘On the fifteenth day of the seventh month, this shall be the Feast of Booths for seven days for Yahweh. 35 On the first day there shall be a holy assembly; you must not do any regular work.[n] 36 For seven days you must present an offering made by fire to Yahweh. On the eighth day it shall be a holy assembly for you, and you shall present an offering made by fire to Yahweh; it is a celebration; you must not do any regular work.[o]
Summary
37 “‘These are Yahweh’s festivals, which you must proclaim, holy assemblies to present an offering made by fire to Yahweh—burnt offering and grain offering, sacrifice and libations, each on its proper day[p]— 38 besides[q] Yahweh’s Sabbaths and besides[r] your gifts and besides[s] your vows and besides[t] all your freewill offerings that you give to Yahweh.
39 “‘Surely on the fifteenth day of the seventh month, at your gathering the land’s produce, you shall hold Yahweh’s festival for seven days; on the first day there shall be a rest period and on the eighth day a rest period. 40 And on the first day you shall take for yourselves the first fruit of majestic trees, branches of palm trees and branches[u] of a leafy tree and of a brook’s poplar trees, and you shall rejoice before[v] Yahweh your God for seven days. 41 And you must hold it as a festival for Yahweh for seven days in the year; it shall be a lasting statute[w] throughout your generations; in the seventh month you must hold it.
Rejoicing in Heaven
19 After these things I heard something like the loud sound of a great crowd in heaven saying,
“Hallelujah!
Salvation and glory and power belong to our God,
2 because his judgments are true and righteous,
because he has passed judgment on the great prostitute
who corrupted the earth with her sexual immorality,
and has avenged the blood of his slaves shed by[a] her hand!”
3 And a second time they said,
“Hallelujah!”
And her smoke goes up forever and ever[b]. 4 And the twenty-four elders and the four living creatures fell down and worshiped God who is seated on the throne, saying,
“Amen! Hallelujah!”
5 And a voice came out from the throne, saying,
“Praise our God
all his slaves,
and those who fear him,
the small and the great!”
The Wedding Celebration of the Lamb
6 And I heard something like the sound of a great crowd and something like the sound of many waters and something like the sound of powerful thunder, saying,
“Hallelujah!
For the Lord God,[c] the All-Powerful, reigns!
7 Let us rejoice and be glad
and give him the glory,
because the wedding celebration of the Lamb has come,
and his bride has prepared herself.
8 And it has been granted to her that she be dressed in bright, clean fine linen (for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints).
