Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
Conditions Among the Early Believers
32 The group of those who believed were of one heart and mind,[a] and no one said that any of his possessions was his own, but everything was held in common.[b] 33 With[c] great power the apostles were giving testimony[d] to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was on them all. 34 For there was no one needy[e] among them, because those who were owners of land or houses were selling[f] them[g] and bringing the proceeds from the sales 35 and placing them at the apostles’ feet. The proceeds[h] were distributed to each, as anyone had need.
Psalm 133[a]
A song of ascents;[b] by David.
133 Look! How good and how pleasant it is
when brothers truly live in unity.[c]
2 It is like fine oil poured on the head,
which flows down the beard[d]—
Aaron’s beard,
and then flows down his garments.[e]
3 It is like the dew of Hermon,[f]
which flows down upon the hills of Zion.[g]
Indeed,[h] that is where the Lord has decreed
a blessing will be available—eternal life.[i]
The Prologue to the Letter
1 This is what we proclaim to you:[a] what was from the beginning,[b] what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have looked at and our hands have touched (concerning the word of life— 2 and the life was revealed, and we have seen and testify and announce[c] to you the eternal life that was with the Father and was revealed to us).[d] 3 What we have seen and heard we announce[e] to you too, so that[f] you may have fellowship[g] with us (and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ). 4 Thus[h] we are writing these things so that[i] our[j] joy may be complete.[k]
God Is Light, So We Must Walk in the Light
5 Now[l] this is the gospel[m] message[n] we have heard from him[o] and announce to you: God is light, and in him there is no darkness at all.[p] 6 If we say we have fellowship with him and yet keep on walking[q] in the darkness, we are lying and not practicing[r] the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light as he himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses[s] us from all sin.[t] 8 If we say we do not bear the guilt of sin,[u] we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 But if we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous,[v] forgiving[w] us our sins and cleansing[x] us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar and his word is not in us. 2 1 (My little children,[y] I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin.[z]) But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate[aa] with the Father, Jesus Christ the Righteous One,[ab] 2 and he himself is the atoning sacrifice[ac] for our sins, and not only for our sins but also for the whole world.[ad]
Jesus’ Appearance to the Disciples
19 On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the disciples had gathered together[a] and locked the doors[b] of the place[c] because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders.[d] Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” 20 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.[e] 21 So Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. Just as the Father has sent me, I also send you.” 22 And after he said this, he breathed on them and said,[f] “Receive the Holy Spirit.[g] 23 If you forgive anyone’s sins, they are forgiven;[h] if you retain anyone’s sins, they are retained.”[i]
The Response of Thomas
24 Now Thomas (called Didymus),[j] one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 The other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he replied,[k] “Unless I see the wounds[l] from the nails in his hands, and put my finger into the wounds from the nails, and put my hand into his side, I will never believe it!”[m]
26 Eight days later the disciples were again together in the house,[n] and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were locked,[o] Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put[p] your finger here, and examine[q] my hands. Extend[r] your hand and put it[s] into my side. Do not continue in your unbelief, but believe.”[t] 28 Thomas replied to him,[u] “My Lord and my God!”[v] 29 Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are the people[w] who have not seen and yet have believed.”[x]
30 Now Jesus performed[y] many other miraculous signs in the presence of the[z] disciples, which are not recorded[aa] in this book.[ab] 31 But these[ac] are recorded[ad] so that you may believe[ae] that Jesus is the Christ,[af] the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.[ag]
