BOOK 5

Yahweh Saves in Times of Trouble

107 Oh (A)give thanks to Yahweh, for (B)He is good,
For His lovingkindness endures forever.
Let (C)the redeemed of Yahweh say so,
Whom He has (D)redeemed from the hand of the adversary
And (E)gathered from the lands,
From the east and from the west,
From the north and from the [a]south.

They (F)wandered in the wilderness along the way of the wasteland;
They did not find an inhabited (G)city.
Hungry [b]and thirsty,
Their (H)soul fainted within them.
Then they (I)cried out to Yahweh in their trouble;
He delivered them out of their distresses.
He led them by a [c](J)straight way,
To go to (K)an inhabited city.
(L)Let them give thanks to Yahweh for His lovingkindness,
And for His wondrous deeds to the sons of men!
For He has (M)satisfied the [d]thirsty soul,
And the (N)hungry soul He has filled with what is good.

10 There were those who (O)inhabited darkness and the shadow of death,
(P)Prisoners in affliction and irons,
11 Because they had (Q)rebelled against the words of God
And (R)spurned the (S)counsel of the Most High.
12 So He subdued their heart with labor;
They stumbled and there was (T)none to help.
13 Then they (U)cried out to Yahweh in their trouble;
He saved them out of their distresses.
14 He (V)brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death
And (W)broke their bands apart.
15 (X)Let them give thanks to Yahweh for His lovingkindness,
And for His wondrous deeds to the sons of men!
16 For He has (Y)shattered the doors of bronze
And cut through the bars of iron.

Numbers 20:1-13

No Water for the Congregation

20 Then the sons of Israel, the whole congregation, came to the (A)wilderness of Zin in the first month; and the people stayed at Kadesh. And Miriam died there and was buried there.

(B)Now there was no water for the congregation, (C)and they assembled themselves against Moses and Aaron. (D)The people thus contended with Moses and spoke, saying, “(E)If only we had breathed our last (F)when our brothers breathed their last before Yahweh! (G)Why then have you brought the assembly of Yahweh into this wilderness, for us and our beasts to die [a]here? And why have you made us come up from Egypt, to bring us into this evil place? (H)It is not a place of [b]grain or figs or vines or pomegranates, nor is there water to drink.” Then Moses and Aaron came in from the presence of the assembly to the doorway of the tent of meeting and (I)fell on their faces. Then the glory of Yahweh appeared to them; and Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, “Take (J)the rod; and you and your brother Aaron assemble the congregation and speak to the rock before their eyes, that it may yield its water. You shall thus bring forth water for them out of the rock and let the congregation and their beasts drink.”

Moses Strikes the Rock

So Moses took the rod (K)from before Yahweh, just as He had commanded him; 10 and Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly before the rock. And he said to them, “(L)Listen now, you rebels; shall we bring forth water for you out of this rock?” 11 Then Moses raised high his hand and struck the rock twice with his rod; and (M)water came forth abundantly, and the congregation and their beasts drank. 12 But Yahweh said to Moses and Aaron, “(N)Because you did not believe Me, to treat Me as holy in the sight of the sons of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them.” 13 Those were the waters of [c](O)Meribah [d]because the sons of Israel contended with Yahweh, and He proved Himself holy among them.

1 Corinthians 10:6-13

Now these things happened as (A)examples for us, so that we would not crave evil things as (B)they also craved.

Do not be (C)idolaters, as some of them were. As it is written, “(D)The people sat down to eat and drink, and stood up to (E)play.” Nor let us act in sexual immorality, as (F)some of them [a]did, and (G)twenty-three thousand fell in one day. Nor let us put Christ to the test, as (H)some of them [b]did, and were destroyed by the serpents. 10 Nor (I)grumble, as some of them [c]did, and (J)were destroyed by the (K)destroyer. 11 Now these things happened to them as an (L)example, and (M)they were written for our instruction, upon whom (N)the ends of the ages have arrived. 12 Therefore let him who (O)thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall. 13 No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man, but (P)God is faithful, who will not allow you to be (Q)tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.
