Psalm 78:1-4

Psalm 78

A Contemplative Maskil of Asaph.

Give ear, O my people, to my teaching;
    incline your ears to the words of my mouth.
I will open my mouth in a parable;
    I will utter insightful sayings of old,
which we have heard and known,
    what our fathers have told us.
We will not hide them from their children,
    but will tell the coming generation
the praises of the Lord,
    and His strength, and the wonderful works that He has done.

Psalm 78:12-16

12 In the sight of their ancestors He did marvelous wonders
    in the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan.
13 He divided the sea and caused them to pass through,
    and He made the waters to stand as a heap.
14 In the daytime He led them with a cloud,
    and all the night with a light of fire.
15 He split rocks in the wilderness
    and gave them abundance to drink as out of the great depths.
16 He brought streams out of the rock
    and caused waters to run down like rivers.

Numbers 20:1-13

Moses Strikes the Rock

20 Then the children of Israel, the whole assembly, came to the Wilderness of Zin in the first month, and the people dwelt in Kadesh, and Miriam died there and was buried there.

And there was no water for the assembly, and they gathered themselves together against Moses and against Aaron. The people argued with Moses, and spoke, saying, “O that we had died when our brothers died before the Lord! And why have you brought up the assembly of the Lord into this wilderness, that we and our livestock should die here? And why have you brought us up from Egypt, to bring us into this evil place? It is no place of seed, or of figs, or of vines, or of pomegranates. Nor is there any water to drink.”

Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly to the door of the tent of meeting, and they fell on their faces, and the glory of the Lord appeared to them. The Lord spoke to Moses, saying: Take the rod, and gather the assembly together, you and Aaron your brother, and speak to the rock before their eyes, and it will give its water, and you will bring out to them water from the rock; so you will give the assembly and their livestock drink.

So Moses took the rod from before the Lord, as He commanded him. 10 Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly before the rock, and he said to them, “Hear now, you rebels. Will we bring out water from this rock for you?” 11 And Moses lifted up his hand, and he struck the rock twice with his rod, and plenty of water came out, and the assembly drank, and their livestock.

12 The Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, “Because you did not believe in Me, to sanctify Me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore you will not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them.”

13 This is the water of Meribah because the children of Israel argued with the Lord, and He was sanctified among them.

Acts 13:32-41

32 “We preach to you good news: The promise which was made to the fathers, 33 God has fulfilled to us, their children, raising Jesus. As it is written in the second Psalm:

‘You are My Son;
    today I have become Your Father.’[a]

34 That He raised Him from the dead, no more to return to corruption, He has spoken in this way:

‘I will give You the holy and sure blessings of David.’[b]

35 So He says in another Psalm:

‘You will not let Your Holy One see decay.’[c]

36 “For after David had served by the counsel of God in his own generation, he fell asleep, was buried with his fathers, and saw decay. 37 But He whom God raised up saw no decay.

38 “Therefore, brothers, let it be known to you that through this Man forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you, 39 and by Him everyone who believes is justified from everything from which you could not be justified by the Law of Moses. 40 Therefore beware, lest what is spoken of in the prophets come upon you:

41 ‘Look, you scoffers,
    marvel and perish!
For I will perform a work in your days
    which you will never believe,
    even if someone declares it to you.’[d]
