Psalm 78:1-4

Psalm 78

A Contemplative Maskil of Asaph.

Give ear, O my people, to my teaching;
    incline your ears to the words of my mouth.
I will open my mouth in a parable;
    I will utter insightful sayings of old,
which we have heard and known,
    what our fathers have told us.
We will not hide them from their children,
    but will tell the coming generation
the praises of the Lord,
    and His strength, and the wonderful works that He has done.

Psalm 78:12-16

12 In the sight of their ancestors He did marvelous wonders
    in the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan.
13 He divided the sea and caused them to pass through,
    and He made the waters to stand as a heap.
14 In the daytime He led them with a cloud,
    and all the night with a light of fire.
15 He split rocks in the wilderness
    and gave them abundance to drink as out of the great depths.
16 He brought streams out of the rock
    and caused waters to run down like rivers.

Isaiah 48:17-21

17 Thus says the Lord,
    your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel:
I am the Lord your God,
    who teaches you to profit,
    who leads you in the way you should go.
18 Oh, that you had listened to My commandments!
    Then your peace would have been as a river
    and your righteousness as the waves of the sea.
19 Your descendants also would have been as the sand
    and your offspring like grains of sand;
their name would not have been cut off
    nor destroyed from before Me.

20 Go forth from Babylon!
    Flee from the Chaldeans!
With a voice of singing declare,
    proclaim this,
utter it even to the ends of the earth;
    say, “The Lord has redeemed His servant Jacob.”
21 They did not thirst when He led them through the deserts;
    He caused the waters to flow out of the rock for them;
He also split the rock,
    and the waters gushed out.

James 4:11-16

Judging a Brother

11 Do not speak evil of one another, brothers. He who speaks evil of his brother and judges his brother speaks evil of the law and judges the law. If you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law, but a judge. 12 There is one Lawgiver who is able to save and to destroy. Who are you to judge another?

Warning Against Boasting

13 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into this city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit,” 14 whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? It is just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away. 15 Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.” 16 But now you are rejoicing in your boastings. All such rejoicing is evil.
