Psalm 116:1-2

Psalm 116[a]

116 I love the Lord
because he heard my plea for mercy,[b]
and listened to me.[c]
As long as I live, I will call to him when I need help.[d]

Psalm 116:12-19

12 How can I repay the Lord
for all his acts of kindness to me?
13 I will celebrate my deliverance,[a]
and call on the name of the Lord.
14 I will fulfill my vows to the Lord
before all his people.
15 The Lord values
the lives of his faithful followers.[b]
16 Yes, Lord! I am indeed your servant;
I am your servant, the son of your female servant.[c]
You saved me from death.[d]
17 I will present a thank offering to you,
and call on the name of the Lord.
18 I will fulfill my vows to the Lord
before all his people,
19 in the courts of the Lord’s temple,
in your midst, O Jerusalem.
Praise the Lord!

Genesis 24:1-9

The Wife for Isaac

24 Now Abraham was old, well advanced in years,[a] and the Lord had blessed him[b] in everything. Abraham said to his servant, the senior one[c] in his household who was in charge of everything he had, “Put your hand under my thigh[d] so that I may make you solemnly promise[e] by the Lord, the God of heaven and the God of the earth: You must not acquire[f] a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I am living. You must go instead to my country and to my relatives[g] to find[h] a wife for my son Isaac.”

The servant asked him, “What if the woman is not willing to come back with me[i] to this land? Must I then[j] take your son back to the land from which you came?”

“Be careful[k] never to take my son back there!” Abraham told him.[l] “The Lord, the God of heaven, who took me from my father’s house and the land of my relatives,[m] promised me with a solemn oath,[n] ‘To your descendants I will give this land.’ He will send his angel[o] before you so that you may find[p] a wife for my son from there. But if the woman is not willing to come back with you,[q] you will be free[r] from this oath of mine. But you must not take my son back there!” So the servant placed his hand under the thigh of his master Abraham and gave his solemn promise he would carry out his wishes.[s]

Acts 7:35-43

35 This same[a] Moses they had rejected, saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and judge?[b] God sent as both ruler and deliverer[c] through the hand of the angel[d] who appeared to him in the bush. 36 This man led them out, performing wonders and miraculous signs[e] in the land of Egypt,[f] at[g] the Red Sea, and in the wilderness[h] for forty years. 37 This is the Moses who said to the Israelites,[i]God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your brothers.’[j] 38 This is the man who was in the congregation[k] in the wilderness[l] with the angel who spoke to him at Mount Sinai, and with our ancestors,[m] and he[n] received living oracles[o] to give to you.[p] 39 Our[q] ancestors[r] were unwilling to obey[s] him, but pushed him aside[t] and turned back to Egypt in their hearts, 40 saying to Aaron, ‘Make us gods who will go in front of us, for this Moses, who led us out of the land of Egypt[u] —we do not know what has happened to him![v] 41 At[w] that time[x] they made an idol in the form of a calf,[y] brought[z] a sacrifice to the idol, and began rejoicing[aa] in the works of their hands.[ab] 42 But God turned away from them and gave them over[ac] to worship the host[ad] of heaven, as it is written in the book of the prophets: ‘It was not to me that you offered slain animals and sacrifices[ae] forty years in the wilderness, was it,[af] house of Israel? 43 But you took along the tabernacle[ag] of Moloch[ah] and the star of the[ai] god Rephan,[aj] the images you made to worship, but I will deport[ak] you beyond Babylon.’[al]
