Psalm 119:49-56

ז (Zayin)

49 Remember your word to your servant,
for you have given me hope.
50 This[a] is what comforts me in my trouble,
for your promise revives me.[b]
51 Arrogant people do nothing but scoff at me.[c]
Yet I do not turn aside from your law.
52 I remember your ancient regulations,[d]
O Lord, and console myself.[e]
53 Rage takes hold of me because of the wicked,
those who reject your law.
54 Your statutes have been my songs[f]
in the house where I live.[g]
55 I remember your name during the night, O Lord,
and I will keep[h] your law.
56 This[i] has been my practice,
for I observe your precepts.

Jeremiah 32:16-35

Jeremiah’s Prayer of Praise and Bewilderment

16 “After I had given the copies of the deed of purchase to Baruch son of Neriah, I prayed to the Lord, 17 ‘Oh, Sovereign Lord,[a] you did indeed[b] make heaven and earth by your mighty power and great strength.[c] Nothing is too hard for you! 18 You show unfailing love to thousands.[d] But you also punish children for the sins of their parents.[e] You are the great and powerful God whose name is the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.[f] 19 You plan great things and you do mighty deeds.[g] You see everything people do.[h] You reward each of them for the way they live and for the things they do.[i] 20 You did miracles and amazing deeds in the land of Egypt that have had lasting effect. By this means you gained both in Israel and among humankind a renown that lasts to this day.[j] 21 You used your mighty power and your great strength to perform miracles and amazing deeds and to bring great terror on the Egyptians. By this means you brought your people Israel out of the land of Egypt.[k] 22 You kept the promise that you swore on oath to their ancestors.[l] You gave them a land flowing with milk and honey.[m] 23 But when they came in and took possession of it, they did not obey you or live as you had instructed them. They did not do anything that you commanded them to do.[n] So you brought all this disaster on them. 24 Even now siege ramps have been built up around the city[o] in order to capture it. War,[p] starvation, and disease are sure to make the city fall into the hands of the Babylonians[q] who are attacking it.[r] Lord,[s] you threatened that this would happen. Now you can see that it is already taking place.[t] 25 The city is sure to fall into the hands of the Babylonians.[u] Yet, in spite of this,[v] you, Sovereign Lord,[w] have said to me, “Buy that field with silver and have the transaction legally witnessed.”’”[x]

The Lord Answers Jeremiah’s Prayer

26 The Lord’s message came to Jeremiah: 27 “I am the Lord, the God of all humankind. There is, indeed, nothing too difficult for me.[y] 28 Therefore I, the Lord, say:[z] ‘I will indeed hand[aa] this city over to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon and the Babylonian army.[ab] They will capture it. 29 The Babylonian soldiers[ac] that are attacking this city will break into it and set it on fire. They will burn it down along with the houses where people have made me angry by offering sacrifices to the god Baal and by pouring out drink offerings to other gods on their rooftops.[ad] 30 This will happen because the people of Israel and Judah have repeatedly done what displeases me[ae] from their earliest history until now[af] and because they[ag] have repeatedly made me angry by the things they have done.[ah] I, the Lord, affirm it![ai] 31 This will happen because[aj] the people of this city have aroused my anger and my wrath since the time they built it until now.[ak] They have made me so angry that I am determined to remove[al] it from my sight. 32 I am determined to do so because the people of Israel and Judah have made me angry with all their wickedness—they, their kings, their officials, their priests, their prophets, and especially the people of Judah and the citizens of Jerusalem have done this wickedness.[am] 33 They have turned away from me instead of turning to me.[an] I tried over and over again[ao] to instruct them, but they did not listen and respond to correction.[ap] 34 They set up their disgusting idols in the temple that I have claimed for my own[aq] and defiled it. 35 They built places of worship for the god Baal in the Valley of Ben Hinnom so that they could sacrifice their sons and daughters to the god Molech.[ar] Such a disgusting practice was not something I commanded them to do. It never even entered my mind to command them to do such a thing! So Judah is certainly liable for punishment.’[as]

Revelation 3:14-22

To the Church in Laodicea

14 “To[a] the angel of the church in Laodicea write the following:[b]

“This is the solemn pronouncement of[c] the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the originator[d] of God’s creation: 15 ‘I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot.[e] I wish you were either cold or hot! 16 So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I am going[f] to vomit[g] you out of my mouth! 17 Because you say, “I am rich and have acquired great wealth,[h] and need nothing,” but[i] do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful,[j] poor, blind, and naked, 18 take my advice[k] and buy gold from me refined by fire so you can become rich! Buy from me[l] white clothing so you can be clothed and your shameful nakedness[m] will not be exposed, and buy eye salve[n] to put on your eyes so you can see! 19 All those[o] I love, I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent! 20 Listen![p] I am standing at the door and knocking! If anyone hears my voice and opens the door I will come into his home[q] and share a meal with him, and he with me. 21 I will grant the one[r] who conquers[s] permission[t] to sit with me on my throne, just as I too conquered[u] and sat down with my Father on his throne. 22 The one who has an ear had better hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’”
