Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
40 So the Lord was angry with his people[a]
and despised the people who belonged to him.[b]
41 He handed them over to[c] the nations,
and those who hated them ruled over them.
42 Their enemies oppressed them;
they were subject to their authority.[d]
43 Many times he delivered[e] them,
but they had a rebellious attitude,[f]
and degraded themselves[g] by their sin.
44 Yet he took notice of their distress,
when he heard their cry for help.
45 He remembered his covenant with them,
and relented[h] because of his great loyal love.
46 He caused all their conquerors[i]
to have pity on them.
47 Deliver us, O Lord, our God.
Gather us from among the nations.
Then we will give thanks[j] to your holy name,
and boast about your praiseworthy deeds.[k]
48 The Lord God of Israel deserves praise,[l]
in the future and forevermore.[m]
Let all the people say, “We agree![n] Praise the Lord!”[o]
Jeremiah Laments for and Prays for the People Soon to be Judged
17 “Gather your belongings together and prepare to leave the land,
you people of Jerusalem who are being besieged.[a]
18 For the Lord says, ‘I will now throw out
those who live in this land.
I will bring so much trouble on them
that they will actually feel it.’[b]
19 And I cried out,[c] ‘We are doomed![d]
Our wound is severe!’
We once thought, ‘This is only an illness.
And we will be able to bear it.’[e]
20 But our tents have been destroyed.
The ropes that held them in place have been ripped apart.[f]
Our children are gone and are not coming back.[g]
There is no survivor to put our tents back up,
no one left to hang their tent curtains in place.
21 For our leaders[h] are stupid.
They have not sought the Lord’s advice.[i]
So they do not act wisely,
and the people they are responsible for[j] have all been scattered.
22 Listen! News is coming even now.[k]
The rumble of a great army is heard approaching[l] from a land in the north.[m]
It is coming to turn the towns of Judah into rubble,
places where only jackals live.
23 Lord, we know that people do not control their own destiny.[n]
It is not in their power to determine what will happen to them.[o]
24 Correct us, Lord, but only in due measure.[p]
Do not punish us in anger or you will reduce us to nothing.[q]
25 Vent your anger on the nations that do not acknowledge you.[r]
Vent it on the peoples[s] who do not worship you.[t]
For they have destroyed the people of Jacob.[u]
They have completely destroyed them[v]
and left their homeland in utter ruin.”
Jesus Warns the Disciples against Pride
45 As[a] all the people were listening, Jesus[b] said to his disciples, 46 “Beware[c] of the experts in the law.[d] They[e] like walking around in long robes, and they love elaborate greetings[f] in the marketplaces[g] and the best seats[h] in the synagogues[i] and the places of honor at banquets. 47 They[j] devour[k] widows’ property,[l] and as a show make long prayers. They will receive a more severe punishment.”
The Widow’s Offering
21 Jesus[m] looked up[n] and saw the rich putting their gifts into the offering box.[o] 2 He also saw a poor widow put in two small copper coins.[p] 3 He[q] said, “I tell you the truth,[r] this poor widow has put in more than all of them.[s] 4 For they all offered their gifts out of their wealth.[t] But she, out of her poverty, put in everything she had to live on.”[u]
