Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
Psalm 14[a]
For the music director, by David.
14 Fools say to themselves,[b] “There is no God.”[c]
They sin and commit evil deeds;[d]
none of them does what is right.[e]
2 The Lord looks down from heaven[f] at the human race,[g]
to see if there is anyone who is wise[h] and seeks God.[i]
3 Everyone rejects God;[j]
they are all morally corrupt.[k]
None of them does what is right,[l]
not even one.
4 All those who behave wickedly[m] do not understand—[n]
those who devour my people as if they were eating bread,
and do not call out to the Lord.
5 They are absolutely terrified,[o]
for God defends the godly.[p]
6 You want to humiliate the oppressed,[q]
even though[r] the Lord is their[s] shelter.
7 I wish the deliverance[t] of Israel would come from Zion!
When the Lord restores the well-being of his people,[u]
may Jacob rejoice,[v]
may Israel be happy![w]
20 Then I said,[a]
“Look up, Jerusalem,[b] and see
the enemy[c] that is coming from the north.
Where now is the flock of people that were entrusted to your care?[d]
Where now are the ‘sheep’ that you take such pride in?[e]
21 What will you say[f] when the Lord[g] appoints as rulers over you those allies
that you, yourself, had actually prepared as such?[h]
Then anguish and agony will grip you
like that of a woman giving birth to a baby.[i]
22 You will probably ask yourself,[j]
‘Why have these things happened to me?
Why have I been treated like a disgraced adulteress
whose skirt has been torn off and her limbs exposed?’[k]
It is because you have sinned so much.[l]
23 But there is little hope for you ever doing good,
you who are so accustomed to doing evil.
Can an Ethiopian[m] change the color of his skin?
Can a leopard remove its spots?[n]
24 “The Lord says,[o]
‘That is why I will scatter your people[p] like chaff
that is blown away by a desert wind.[q]
25 This is your fate,
the destiny to which I have appointed you,
because you have forgotten me
and have trusted in false gods.
26 So I will pull your skirt up over your face
and expose you to shame like a disgraced adulteress![r]
27 People of Jerusalem,[s] I have seen your adulterous worship,
your shameless prostitution to, and your lustful pursuit of, other gods.[t]
I have seen your disgusting acts of worship[u]
on the hills throughout the countryside.
You are doomed to destruction![v]
How long will you continue to be unclean?’”
Salutation
1 From Paul,[a] an apostle of Christ Jesus by the command of God our Savior[b] and of Christ Jesus our hope, 2 to Timothy, my genuine child in the faith. Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord!
Timothy’s Task in Ephesus
3 As I urged you when I was leaving for Macedonia, stay on in Ephesus to instruct[c] certain people not to spread false teachings,[d] 4 nor to occupy themselves with myths and interminable genealogies.[e] Such things promote useless speculations rather than God’s redemptive plan[f] that operates by faith. 5 But the aim of our instruction[g] is love that comes from a pure heart, a good conscience, and a sincere faith.[h] 6 Some have strayed from these and turned away to empty discussion. 7 They want to be teachers of the law, but they do not understand what they are saying or the things they insist on so confidently.[i]
8 But we know that the law is good if someone uses it legitimately, 9 realizing that law[j] is not intended for a righteous person, but for lawless and rebellious people, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, 10 sexually immoral people, practicing homosexuals,[k] kidnappers, liars, perjurers—in fact, for any who live contrary to sound teaching. 11 This[l] accords with the glorious gospel of the blessed God[m] that was entrusted to me.[n]
