Psalm 63

Psalm 63[a]

Ardent Longing for God

A psalm of David, when he was in the wilderness of Judah.(A)

I

O God, you are my God—
    it is you I seek!
For you my body yearns;
    for you my soul thirsts,
In a land parched, lifeless,
    and without water.(B)
I look to you in the sanctuary
    to see your power and glory.
For your love is better than life;[b]
    my lips shall ever praise you!

II

I will bless you as long as I live;
    I will lift up my hands, calling on your name.
My soul shall be sated as with choice food,
    with joyous lips my mouth shall praise you!
I think of you upon my bed,
    I remember you through the watches of the night
You indeed are my savior,
    and in the shadow of your wings I shout for joy.(C)
My soul clings fast to you;
    your right hand upholds me.

III

10 But those who seek my life will come to ruin;
    they shall go down to the depths of the netherworld!
11     Those who would hand over my life to the sword shall
    become the prey of jackals!
12 But the king shall rejoice in God;
    all who swear by the Lord[c] shall exult,
    but the mouths of liars will be shut!(D)

2 Samuel 2:1-7

Chapter 2

David Is Anointed King. After this, David inquired of the Lord, “Shall I go up into one of the cities of Judah?” The Lord replied to him: Go up. Then David asked, “Where shall I go?” He replied: To Hebron. So David went up there, with his two wives, Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail, the wife of Nabal of Carmel.(A) David also brought up his men with their families, and they dwelt in the towns of Hebron. Then the men of Judah came there and anointed David king over the house of Judah.

A report reached David that the people of Jabesh-gilead had buried Saul.(B) So David sent messengers to the people of Jabesh-gilead and said to them: “May you be blessed by the Lord for having done this kindness to your lord Saul in burying him. And now may the Lord show you kindness and fidelity. For my part, I will show generosity to you for having done this. So take courage and prove yourselves valiant, for though your lord Saul is dead, the house of Judah has anointed me king over them.”

John 16:25-33

25 [a](A)“I have told you this in figures of speech. The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures but I will tell you clearly about the Father. 26 On that day you will ask in my name, and I do not tell you that I will ask the Father for you.(B) 27 For the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have come to believe that I came from God. 28 I came from the Father and have come into the world. Now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.”(C) 29 His disciples said, “Now you are talking plainly, and not in any figure of speech. 30 Now we realize that you know everything and that you do not need to have anyone question you. Because of this we believe that you came from God.”[b] 31 Jesus answered them, “Do you believe now? 32 Behold, the hour is coming and has arrived when each of you will be scattered[c] to his own home and you will leave me alone. But I am not alone, because the Father is with me.(D) 33 I have told you this so that you might have peace in me. In the world you will have trouble, but take courage, I have conquered the world.”(E)
