Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
Psalm 3[a]
Threatened but Trusting
1 A psalm of David, when he fled from his son Absalom.[b](A)
I
2 How many are my foes, Lord!
How many rise against me!
3 [c]How many say of me,
“There is no salvation for him in God.”(B)
Selah
4 But you, Lord, are a shield around me;
my glory, you keep my head high.(C)
II
5 With my own voice I will call out to the Lord,
and he will answer me from his holy mountain.
Selah
6 I lie down and I fall asleep,
[and] I will wake up, for the Lord sustains me.(D)
7 I do not fear, then, thousands of people
arrayed against me on every side.
III
5 Then you shall declare in the presence of the Lord, your God, “My father was a refugee Aramean[a] who went down to Egypt with a small household and lived there as a resident alien.(A) But there he became a nation great, strong and numerous. 6 (B)When the Egyptians maltreated and oppressed us, imposing harsh servitude upon us, 7 we cried to the Lord, the God of our ancestors, and the Lord heard our cry and saw our affliction, our toil and our oppression. 8 Then the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a strong hand and outstretched arm, with terrifying power, with signs and wonders,(C) 9 and brought us to this place, and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey.(D) 10 Now, therefore, I have brought the first fruits of the products of the soil which you, Lord, have given me.” You shall set them before the Lord, your God, and you shall bow down before the Lord, your God.
32 Remember the days past when, after you had been enlightened,[a] you endured a great contest of suffering.(A) 33 At times you were publicly exposed to abuse and affliction; at other times you associated yourselves with those so treated.(B) 34 You even joined in the sufferings of those in prison and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property, knowing that you had a better and lasting possession.(C) 35 Therefore, do not throw away your confidence; it will have great recompense.(D) 36 You need endurance to do the will of God and receive what he has promised.(E)
37 “For, after just a brief moment,[b]
he who is to come shall come;
he shall not delay.(F)
38 But my just one shall live by faith,
and if he draws back I take no pleasure in him.”(G)
39 We are not among those who draw back and perish, but among those who have faith and will possess life.
