1 Samuel 2:1-10

Hannah’s Thanksgiving Psalm

Then Hannah prayed:

“My heart exults in the Lord;
my strength[a] is increased by the Lord.
I will open my mouth to speak[b] against my enemies,
because I rejoice in your deliverance.

Indeed,[c] there is no one holy like the Lord,
indeed, there is no one besides you,
there is no rock like our God.

Don’t continue to talk proudly,
    and don’t speak arrogantly,
for the Lord is a God of knowledge,
and by him actions are weighed.

The bows of warriors are shattered,[d]
but those who stumble are equipped with[e] strength.
Those who had an abundance of bread
    now hire themselves out,
and those who were hungry
    hunger no more.[f]
While the barren woman gives birth to seven children,[g]
she who had many children languishes.

The Lord kills and gives life,
he brings people down to where the dead are[h]
        and he raises them up.
The Lord makes people poor
    and he makes people rich,
he brings them low,
    and he also exalts them.
He raises the poor up from the dust,
he lifts up the needy from the trash heap
to make them sit with princes
and inherit a seat of honor.
Indeed the pillars of the earth belong to the Lord,
and he has set the world on them.
He guards the steps[i] of his faithful ones,
while the wicked are made silent[j] in darkness.
He grants the request of the one who prays.[k]
He blesses the year of the righteous.[l]
Indeed it’s not by strength that a person prevails.

10 The Lord will shatter his enemies[m]
    —those who contend against him.
Who is holy?[n]
The one who will thunder[o] against them in the heavens.
The Lord will judge the ends of the earth,
he will give strength to his king,
and he will increase the strength of His anointed one.”

Genesis 17:15-22

Sarah’s Pregnancy Foretold

15 God told Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you are not to call her Sarai any longer,[a] because her name is to be Sarah.[b] 16 I will bless her. Furthermore, I will give you a son from her. I will bless her, so that nations, kings, and people will come from her.”

17 Abraham fell to the ground,[c] laughed, and told himself, “Can a child be born to a 100-year-old man? Can a 90-year-old Sarah give birth?” 18 So Abraham responded to God, “If only Ishmael would live in constant awareness that you’re always with him!”[d]

19 But God replied, “No, but your wife Sarah will give birth to your son, and you are to name him Isaac.[e] I’ll confirm my covenant with him as an eternal covenant for his descendants. 20 And as for Ishmael, I’ve heard you. I’ll bless him, and he’ll have many descendants.[f] I will multiply him greatly, he’ll father twelve tribal leaders, and I’ll cause his descendants[g] to become a great nation. 21 Now as to Isaac, I’ll confirm my covenant with him, to whom Sarah will give birth as your son at this time next year.” 22 With that, God finished talking to Abraham, and ascended, leaving him.

Galatians 4:8-20

However, in the past, when you did not know God, you were slaves to things that are not really gods at all.[a] But now that you know God, or rather have been known by God, how can you turn back again to those powerless and bankrupt basic principles?[b] Why do you want to become their slaves all over again? 10 You are observing days, months, seasons, and years. 11 I am afraid for you! I don’t want my work for you to have[c] been wasted!

Paul’s Concern for the Galatians

12 I beg you, brothers, to become like me, since I became like you. You did not do anything wrong to me. 13 You know that it was because I was ill[d] that I brought you the gospel the first time. 14 Even though my condition put you to the test, you did not despise or reject me. On the contrary, you welcomed me as if I were an angel of God, or as if I were the Messiah[e] Jesus. 15 What, then, happened to your positive attitude?[f] For I testify that if it had been possible, you would have torn out your eyes and given them to me. 16 So have I now become your enemy for telling you the truth?

17 These people who have been instructing you[g] are devoted to you, but not in a good way. They want you to avoid me so that you will be devoted to them. 18 (Now it is always good to be devoted to a good cause, even when I am not with you.) 19 My children, I am suffering birth pains for you again until the Messiah[h] is formed in you. 20 Indeed, I wish I were with you right now so that I could change the tone of my voice, because I am completely baffled by you!
