Micah 3:5-12

Against Prophets Who Lead the People Astray

Thus says the Lord about the prophets
    who lead my people astray,
who promise prosperity
    when they have something to eat,
but who declare war against those
    who put no food into their mouths.
Therefore, you will have night without vision
    and darkness without divination.
The sun will go down on the prophets;
    for them the daytime will be black.
Then the seers will be disgraced
    and the diviners will be put to shame.
They will all cover their lips,
    for there is no answer from God.
But as for me, I am filled with strength,
    with the Spirit of the Lord,
    with justice and might
to declare to Jacob his crime
    and to Israel his sin.

A Civilization Built on Injustice

Listen to this,
    you leaders of the house of Jacob,
    you rulers of the house of Israel,
who despise justice
    and pervert what is right,
10 who build Zion through bloodshed
    and Jerusalem through wickedness.
11 Her leaders accept bribes for favorable judgments,
    her priests render judgments for a fee,
    her prophets practice divination for money.
And yet they rely upon the Lord, saying,
    “Isn’t the Lord in our midst?
    No harm can come upon us.”
12 Therefore, because of you,
    Zion will be plowed like a field.
Jerusalem will be reduced to a heap of rubble,
    and the temple mount to a height
    overgrown with thickets.

Psalm 43

Psalm 43[a]

Prayer To Worship God Anew

Grant me your justice, O God,
    and plead my cause against a godless nation;
    rescue me from those who are deceitful and unjust.
You, O God, are my refuge;
    why have you rejected me?
Why must I go about in mourning,
    while my enemy oppresses me?
Send forth your light and your truth;[b]
    they will serve as my guide.
Let them bring me to your holy mountain,
    to the place of your dwelling.
Then I will go to the altar of God,
    to the God of my joy and delight,
and I will praise you[c] with the harp,
    O God, my God.
Why are you so disheartened, O my soul?
    Why do you sigh within me?
Place your hope in God;
    for I will once again praise him,
    my Savior and my God.[d]

1 Thessalonians 2:9-13

You surely remember, brethren, our toil and drudgery as we worked night and day so that we would not be a burden to anyone while we proclaimed the gospel of God to you. 10 You are witnesses, as is God, that our treatment of you who believed has been devout, upright, and blameless.

11 As you are well aware, we treated each one of you as a father treats his children, 12 urging and encouraging you and pleading with you to lead lives worthy of God who calls you into his kingdom and glory.

13 The Word of God Is at Work.[a] We also unceasingly give thanks to God because, when we handed on the word of God to you, you accepted it not as a human word but as what it truly is, the word of God, which is at work in you who believe.

Matthew 23:1-12

Chapter 23

Portrait of the Scribes and Pharisees.[a] Then Jesus addressed the crowds and his disciples: “The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses’ seat. Therefore, be careful to do whatever they tell you, but do not follow their example, for they do not practice what they preach. They tie up heavy burdens that are difficult to bear and lay them on the shoulders of others, but they will not lift a finger to be of assistance.

“Everything they do is meant to attract the attention of others. They widen their phylacteries[b] and lengthen their tassels. They love to have places of honor at banquets and the best seats in synagogues, and to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and to be addressed as ‘Rabbi.’

Do Not Be Called Teacher.[c] “But do not allow yourselves to be called ‘Rabbi,’ for you have only one Master, and you are all brethren. Call no one on earth your father, for you have but one Father, and he is in heaven. 10 You must not be called ‘teacher,’ for you have only one Teacher, the Christ. 11 The greatest among you must be your servant. 12 All those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and all those who humble themselves will be exalted.
