New English Translation (NET)
Version
Psalm 123

Psalm 123[a]

A song of ascents.[b]

123 I look up[c] toward you,
the one enthroned[d] in heaven.
Look, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master,
as the eyes of a female servant look to the hand of her mistress,[e]
so our eyes will look to the Lord, our God, until he shows us favor.
Show us favor, O Lord, show us favor!
For we have had our fill of humiliation, and then some.[f]
We have had our fill[g]
of the taunts of the self-assured,
of the contempt of the proud.

Job 21:1

Job’s Reply to Zophar[a]

21 Then Job answered:

Job 21:17-34

How Often Do the Wicked Suffer?

17 “How often[a] is the lamp of the wicked extinguished?
How often does their[b] misfortune come upon them?
How often does God apportion pain[c] to them[d] in his anger?
18 How often[e] are they like straw before the wind,
and like chaff swept away[f] by a whirlwind?
19 You may say,[g] ‘God stores up a man’s[h] punishment for his children!’[i]
Instead let him repay[j] the man himself[k]
so that[l] he may be humbled![m]
20 Let his own eyes see his destruction;[n]
let him drink of the anger of the Almighty.
21 For what is his interest[o] in his home
after his death,[p]
when the number of his months
has been broken off?[q]
22 Can anyone teach[r] God knowledge,
since[s] he judges those that are on high?[t]

Death Levels Everything

23 “One man dies in his full vigor,[u]
completely secure and prosperous,
24 his body[v] well nourished,[w]
and the marrow of his bones moist.[x]
25 And another man[y] dies in bitterness of soul,[z]
never having tasted[aa] anything good.
26 Together they lie down in the dust,
and worms cover over them both.

Futile Words, Deceptive Answers

27 “Yes, I know what you are thinking,[ab]
the schemes[ac] by which you would wrong me.[ad]
28 For you say,
‘Where now is the nobleman’s house,[ae]
and where are the tents in which the wicked lived?’[af]
29 Have you never questioned those who travel the roads?
Do you not recognize their accounts[ag]
30 that the evil man is spared
from the day of his misfortune,
that he is delivered[ah]
from the day of God’s wrath?
31 No one denounces his conduct to his face;
no one repays him for what[ai] he has done.[aj]
32 And when he is carried to the tombs,
and watch is kept[ak] over the funeral mound,[al]
33 The clods of the torrent valley[am] are sweet to him;
behind him everybody follows in procession,
and before him goes a countless throng.
34 So how can you console me with your futile words?
Nothing is left of your answers but deception!”[an]

2 John

Introduction and Thanksgiving

From[a] the elder,[b] to an elect lady[c] and her children, whom I love in truth[d] (and not I alone, but also all those[e] who know the truth), because of the truth[f] that resides in us and will be with us forever. Grace, mercy, and[g] peace will be with us from God the Father and from[h] Jesus Christ the Son of the Father, in truth and love.

I rejoiced greatly because I have found some[i] of your children living according to the truth,[j] just as the Father commanded us.[k]

Warning Against False Teachers

But now[l] I ask you, lady (not as if I were[m] writing a new commandment[n] to you, but the one[o] we have had from the beginning),[p] that[q] we love one another. (Now this is love: that we walk[r] according to his commandments.) This is the commandment, just as you have heard from the beginning; thus[s] you should walk in it.[t] For[u] many deceivers have gone out into the world, people who do not confess Jesus as[v] Christ[w] coming in the flesh.[x] This person is the deceiver and the antichrist![y] Watch out, so that you do not lose the things we have worked for,[z] but receive a full reward.[aa]

Everyone[ab] who goes on ahead and does not remain[ac] in the teaching of Christ[ad] does not have God.[ae] The one who remains in this teaching has both the Father and the Son. 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house and do not give him any greeting,[af] 11 because the person who gives him a greeting shares in his evil deeds.[ag]

Conclusion

12 Though I have many other[ah] things to write to you, I do not want to do so with[ai] paper and ink,[aj] but I hope to come visit you and speak face to face,[ak] so that our joy may be complete.

13 The children of your elect sister greet you.[al]
