Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
The Victorious Power of the God of Jacob.
For the choir director; on stringed instruments. A Psalm of Asaph, a Song.
76 God is (A)known in Judah;
His name is (B)great in Israel.
2 His [a](C)tabernacle is in (D)Salem;
His (E)dwelling place also is in Zion.
3 There He (F)broke the [b]flaming arrows,
The shield and the sword and the [c]weapons of war. [d]Selah.
4 You are resplendent,
[e]More majestic than the mountains of prey.
5 The (G)stouthearted were plundered,
[f]They sank into sleep;
And none of the [g]warriors could use his hands.
6 At Your (H)rebuke, O God of Jacob,
Both [h](I)rider and horse were cast into a dead sleep.
7 You, even You, are (J)to be feared;
And (K)who may stand in Your presence when once [i]You are angry?
19 “Then I desired to know the [a]exact meaning of the (A)fourth beast, which was different from all [b]the others, exceedingly dreadful, with its teeth of iron and its claws of bronze, and which devoured, crushed and trampled down the remainder with its feet, 20 and the meaning of the ten horns that were on its head and the other horn which came up, and before which three of them fell, namely, that horn which had eyes and a mouth uttering great boasts and [c]which was larger in appearance than its associates. 21 I kept looking, and that horn was (B)waging war with the [d]saints and overpowering them 22 until the Ancient of Days came and (C)judgment was [e]passed in favor of the [f]saints of the Highest One, and the time arrived when the [g]saints took possession of the kingdom.
23 “Thus he said: ‘The fourth beast will be a fourth kingdom on the earth, which will be different from all the other kingdoms and will devour the whole earth and tread it down and crush it. 24 As for the (D)ten horns, out of this kingdom ten kings will arise; and another will arise after them, and he will be different from the previous ones and will subdue three kings. 25 He will (E)speak [h]out against the (F)Most High and (G)wear down the [i]saints of the Highest One, and he will intend to make (H)alterations in times and in law; and [j]they will be given into his hand for a [k](I)time, [l]times, and half a [m]time. 26 But the court will sit for judgment, and his dominion will be (J)taken away, [n]annihilated and destroyed [o]forever. 27 Then the [p](K)sovereignty, the dominion and the greatness of all the kingdoms under the whole heaven will be given to the people of the [q]saints of the Highest One; His kingdom will be an (L)everlasting kingdom, and all the dominions will (M)serve and obey Him.’
The Two Witnesses
11 Then there was given me a [a](A)measuring rod like a staff; [b]and (B)someone said, “Get up and measure the [c]temple of God and the altar, and those who worship in it. 2 [d]Leave out the (C)court which is outside the [e]temple and do not measure it, for (D)it has been given to the nations; and they will (E)tread under foot (F)the holy city for (G)forty-two months. 3 And I will grant authority to my two (H)witnesses, and they will prophesy for (I)twelve hundred and sixty days, clothed in (J)sackcloth.” 4 These are the (K)two olive trees and the two lampstands that stand before the Lord of the earth. 5 And if anyone wants to harm them, (L)fire flows out of their mouth and devours their enemies; so if anyone wants to harm them, (M)he must be killed in this way. 6 These have the power to (N)shut up the sky, so that rain will not fall during (O)the days of their prophesying; and they have power over the waters to (P)turn them into blood, and (Q)to strike the earth with every plague, as often as they desire.
7 When they have finished their testimony, (R)the beast that comes up out of the (S)abyss will (T)make war with them, and overcome them and kill them. 8 And their dead bodies will lie in the street of the (U)great city which [f]mystically is called (V)Sodom and (W)Egypt, where also their Lord was crucified. 9 Those from (X)the peoples and tribes and tongues and nations will look at their dead [g]bodies for three and a half days, and [h](Y)will not permit their dead bodies to be laid in a tomb. 10 And (Z)those who dwell on the earth will rejoice over them and celebrate; and they will (AA)send gifts to one another, because these two prophets tormented (AB)those who dwell on the earth.
11 But after the three and a half days, (AC)the breath of life from God came into them, and they stood on their feet; and great fear fell upon those who were watching them. 12 And they heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them, “(AD)Come up here.” Then they (AE)went up into heaven in the cloud, and their enemies watched them. 13 And in that hour there was a great (AF)earthquake, and a tenth of the city fell; [i]seven thousand people were killed in the earthquake, and the rest were terrified and (AG)gave glory to the (AH)God of heaven.
14 The second (AI)woe is past; behold, the third woe is coming quickly.
