Psalm 138

Psalm 138[a]

By David.

138 I will give you thanks with all my heart;
before the heavenly assembly[b] I will sing praises to you.
I will bow down toward your holy temple,
and give thanks to your name,
because of your loyal love and faithfulness,
for you have exalted your promise above the entire sky.[c]
When[d] I cried out for help, you answered me.
You made me bold and energized me.[e]
Let all the kings of the earth give thanks[f] to you, O Lord,
when they hear the words you speak.[g]
Let them sing about the Lord’s deeds,[h]
for the Lord’s splendor is magnificent.[i]
Though the Lord is exalted, he looks after the lowly,
and from far away humbles[j] the proud.
Even when I must walk in the midst of danger,[k] you revive me.
You oppose my angry enemies,[l]
and your right hand delivers me.
The Lord avenges me.[m]
O Lord, your loyal love endures.
Do not abandon those whom you have made.[n]

Esther 3:7-15

In the first month (that is, the month of Nisan), in the twelfth year[a] of King Ahasuerus’ reign, pur[b] (that is, the lot) was cast before Haman in order to determine a day and a month.[c] It turned out to be the twelfth month (that is, the month of Adar).[d]

Then Haman said to King Ahasuerus, “There is a particular people[e] that is dispersed and spread among the inhabitants[f] throughout all the provinces of your kingdom whose laws differ from those of all other peoples. Furthermore, they do not observe the king’s laws. It is not appropriate for the king to provide a haven for them.[g] If the king is so inclined,[h] let an edict be issued[i] to destroy them. I will pay 10,000 talents of silver[j] to be conveyed to the king’s treasuries for the officials who carry out this business.”

10 So the king removed his signet ring[k] from his hand and gave it to Haman the son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, who was hostile toward the Jews. 11 The king replied to Haman, “Keep your money,[l] and do with those people whatever you wish.”[m]

12 So the royal scribes[n] were summoned in the first month, on the thirteenth day of the month. Everything Haman commanded was written to the king’s satraps[o] and governors who were in every province and to the officials of every people, province by province according to its script and people by people according to their language. In the name of King Ahasuerus it was written and sealed with the king’s signet ring. 13 Letters were sent by the runners to all the king’s provinces stating that[p] they should destroy, kill, and annihilate all the Jews, from youth to elderly, both women and children,[q] on a particular day, namely the thirteenth day[r] of the twelfth month (that is, the month of Adar), and to loot and plunder their possessions. 14 A copy of this edict was to be presented as law throughout every province; it was to be made known to all the inhabitants,[s] so that they would be prepared for this day. 15 The messengers[t] scurried forth[u] with the king’s order.[v] The edict was issued in Susa the citadel. While the king and Haman sat down to drink, the city of Susa was in an uproar.[w]

Acts 2:22-36

22 “Men of Israel,[a] listen to these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man clearly attested to you by God with powerful deeds,[b] wonders, and miraculous signs[c] that God performed among you through him, just as you yourselves know— 23 this man, who was handed over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you executed[d] by nailing him to a cross at the hands of Gentiles.[e] 24 But God raised him up,[f] having released[g] him from the pains[h] of death, because it was not possible for him to be held in its power.[i] 25 For David says about him,

I saw the Lord always in front of me,[j]
for he is at my right hand so that I will not be shaken.
26 Therefore my heart was glad and my tongue rejoiced;
my body[k] also will live in hope,
27 because you will not leave my soul in Hades,[l]
nor permit your Holy One to experience[m] decay.
28 You have made known to me the paths of life;
you will make me full of joy with your presence.’[n]

29 “Brothers,[o] I can speak confidently[p] to you about our forefather[q] David, that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. 30 So then, because[r] he was a prophet and knew that God had sworn to him with an oath to seat one of his descendants[s] on his throne,[t] 31 David by foreseeing this[u] spoke about the resurrection of the Christ,[v] that he was neither abandoned to Hades,[w] nor did his body[x] experience[y] decay.[z] 32 This Jesus God raised up, and we are all witnesses of it.[aa] 33 So then, exalted[ab] to the right hand[ac] of God, and having received[ad] the promise of the Holy Spirit[ae] from the Father, he has poured out[af] what you both see and hear. 34 For David did not ascend into heaven, but he himself says,

The Lord said to my lord,
Sit[ag] at my right hand
35 until I make your enemies a footstool[ah] for your feet.”’[ai]

36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know beyond a doubt[aj] that God has made this Jesus whom you crucified[ak] both Lord[al] and Christ.”[am]
