Psalm 90[a]

God’s Eternity and Human Frailty

A prayer of Moses, the man of God.

I

Lord, you have been our refuge
    through all generations.
Before the mountains were born,
    the earth and the world brought forth,
    from eternity to eternity you are God.(A)
You turn humanity back into dust,[b]
    saying, “Return, you children of Adam!”(B)
A thousand years in your eyes
    are merely a day gone by,(C)
Before a watch passes in the night,
    [c]you wash them away;(D)
They sleep,
    and in the morning they sprout again like an herb.
In the morning it blooms only to pass away;
    in the evening it is wilted and withered.[d](E)

II

Truly we are consumed by your anger,
    filled with terror by your wrath.
You have kept our faults before you,
    our hidden sins in the light of your face.(F)
Our life ebbs away under your wrath;(G)
    our years end like a sigh.
10 Seventy is the sum of our years,
    or eighty, if we are strong;
Most of them are toil and sorrow;
    they pass quickly, and we are gone.
11 Who comprehends the strength of your anger?
    Your wrath matches the fear it inspires.
12 Teach us to count our days aright,
    that we may gain wisdom of heart.

III

13 Relent, O Lord! How long?
    Have pity on your servants!
14 Fill us at daybreak with your mercy,(H)
    that all our days we may sing for joy.
15 Make us glad as many days as you humbled us,
    for as many years as we have seen trouble.(I)
16 Show your deeds to your servants,
    your glory to their children.
17 May the favor of the Lord our God be ours.(J)
    Prosper the work of our hands!
    Prosper the work of our hands!

Isaiah 1:24-31

24 Now, therefore, says the Lord,
    the Lord of hosts, the Mighty One of Israel:
Ah! I will take vengeance on my foes
    and fully repay my enemies!(A)
25 I will turn my hand against you,
    and refine your dross in the furnace,
    removing all your alloy.
26 I will restore your judges[a] as at first,
    and your counselors as in the beginning;
After that you shall be called
    city of justice, faithful city.(B)
27 [b]Zion shall be redeemed by justice,
    and her repentant ones by righteousness.
28 Rebels and sinners together shall be crushed,
    those who desert the Lord shall be consumed.

Judgment on the Sacred Groves

29 [c]You shall be ashamed of the terebinths which you desired,
    and blush on account of the gardens which you chose.
30 You shall become like a terebinth whose leaves wither,
    like a garden that has no water.
31 The strong tree shall turn to tinder,
    and the one who tends it shall become a spark;
Both of them shall burn together,
    and there shall be none to quench them.

Luke 11:29-32

29 While still more people gathered in the crowd, he said to them,(A) “This generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it, except the sign of Jonah.(B) 30 Just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of Man be to this generation. 31 At the judgment the queen of the south will rise with the men of this generation and she will condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and there is something greater than Solomon here.(C) 32 At the judgment the men of Nineveh will arise with this generation and condemn it, because at the preaching of Jonah they repented, and there is something greater than Jonah here.(D)
