The Canticle of Mary. 46 (A)And Mary said:[a]
“My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord;(B)
47 my spirit rejoices in God my savior.(C)
48 For he has looked upon his handmaid’s lowliness;
behold, from now on will all ages call me blessed.(D)
49 The Mighty One has done great things for me,
and holy is his name.(E)
50 His mercy is from age to age
to those who fear him.(F)
51 He has shown might with his arm,
dispersed the arrogant of mind and heart.(G)
52 He has thrown down the rulers from their thrones
but lifted up the lowly.(H)
53 The hungry he has filled with good things;
the rich he has sent away empty.(I)
54 He has helped Israel his servant,
remembering his mercy,(J)
55 according to his promise to our fathers,
to Abraham and to his descendants forever.”(K)
6 [a]With what shall I come before the Lord,
and bow before God most high?
Shall I come before him with burnt offerings,
with calves a year old?(A)
7 Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams,
with myriad streams of oil?
[b] Shall I give my firstborn for my crime,
the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?
8 [c]You have been told, O mortal, what is good,
and what the Lord requires of you:
Only to do justice and to love goodness,
and to walk humbly with your God.(B)
5 For this reason, when he came into the world, he said:[a]
“Sacrifice and offering you did not desire,(A)
but a body you prepared for me;
6 holocausts and sin offerings you took no delight in.
7 Then I said, ‘As is written of me in the scroll,
Behold, I come to do your will, O God.’”
8 First he says, “Sacrifices and offerings, holocausts and sin offerings,[b] you neither desired nor delighted in.” These are offered according to the law.(B) 9 Then he says, “Behold, I come to do your will.” He takes away the first to establish the second.(C) 10 By this “will,” we have been consecrated through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.(D)
