Psalm 7

In You Do I Take Refuge

A (A)Shiggaion[a] of David, which he sang to the Lord concerning the words of Cush, a Benjaminite.

O Lord my God, in you do I (B)take refuge;
    (C)save me from all my pursuers and deliver me,
lest like (D)a lion they tear my soul apart,
    rending it in pieces, with (E)none to deliver.
O Lord my God, (F)if I have done this,
    if there is (G)wrong in my hands,
if I have repaid (H)my friend[b] with evil
    or (I)plundered my enemy without cause,
let the enemy pursue my soul and overtake it,
    and let him (J)trample my life to the ground
    and lay my glory in the dust. Selah
(K)Arise, O Lord, in your anger;
    (L)lift yourself up against the fury of my enemies;
    (M)awake for me; you have appointed a judgement.
Let the assembly of the peoples be gathered about you;
    over it return on high.
The Lord (N)judges the peoples;
    (O)judge me, O Lord, according to my righteousness
    and according to the integrity that is in me.
Oh, let the evil of the wicked come to an end,
    and may you establish the righteous—
you who (P)test (Q)the minds and hearts,[c]
    O righteous God!
10 My shield is (R)with God,
    who saves (S)the upright in heart.
11 God is (T)a righteous judge,
    and a God who feels (U)indignation every day.
12 If a man[d] does not repent, God[e] will (V)whet his sword;
    he has (W)bent and (X)readied his bow;
13 he has prepared for him his deadly weapons,
    making his (Y)arrows (Z)fiery shafts.
14 Behold, the wicked man (AA)conceives evil
    and is (AB)pregnant with mischief
    and gives birth to lies.
15 He makes (AC)a pit, digging it out,
    and falls into the hole that he has made.
16 His (AD)mischief returns upon his own head,
    and on his own skull his violence descends.
17 I will give to the Lord the thanks due to his righteousness,
    and I will (AE)sing praise to the name of the Lord, the Most High.

Ezekiel 33:7-20

(A)“So you, (B)son of man, I have made a watchman for the house of Israel. (C)Whenever you hear a word from my mouth, you shall give them warning from me. (D)If I say to the wicked, O wicked one, you shall surely die, (E)and you do not speak to warn the wicked to turn from his way, (F)that wicked person shall die in his iniquity, but his blood I will require at your hand. (G)But if you warn the wicked to turn from his way, and he does not turn from his way, (H)that person shall die in his iniquity, (I)but you will have delivered your soul.

Why Will You Die, Israel?

10 “And you, (J)son of man, say to the house of Israel, Thus have you said: ‘Surely our transgressions and our sins are upon us, and (K)we rot away because of them. (L)How then can we live?’ 11 Say to them, (M)As I live, declares the Lord God, (N)I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live; (O)turn back, turn back from your evil ways, (P)for why will you die, O house of Israel?

12 (Q)“And you, son of man, say to (R)your people, (S)The righteousness of the righteous shall not deliver him when he transgresses, (T)and as for the wickedness of the wicked, he shall not fall by it when he turns from his wickedness, (U)and the righteous shall not be able to live by his righteousness[a] when he sins. 13 Though I say to the righteous that he shall surely live, yet (V)if he trusts in his righteousness and does injustice, none of his righteous deeds shall be remembered, but in his injustice that he has done he shall die. 14 Again, (W)though I say to the wicked, (X)‘You shall surely die’, yet (Y)if he turns from his sin and does what is just and right, 15 if the wicked (Z)restores the pledge, (AA)gives back what he has taken by robbery, and walks (AB)in the statutes of life, not doing injustice, he shall surely live; he shall not die. 16 (AC)None of the sins that he has committed shall be remembered against him. He has done what is just and right; he shall surely live.

17 “Yet (AD)your people say, (AE)‘The way of the Lord is not just’, when it is their own way that is not just. 18 (AF)When the righteous turns from his righteousness and does injustice, he shall die for it. 19 And (AG)when the wicked turns from his wickedness and does what is just and right, he shall live by this. 20 Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ O house of Israel, (AH)I will judge each of you according to his ways.”

John 5:19-40

The Authority of the Son

19 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, (A)the Son (B)can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father[a] does, that the Son does likewise. 20 For (C)the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And (D)greater works than these will he show him, so that (E)you may marvel. 21 For as the Father (F)raises the dead and (G)gives them life, so (H)also the Son gives life (I)to whom he will. 22 (J)The Father judges no one, but (K)has given all judgement to the Son, 23 that all may honour the Son, just as they (L)honour the Father. (M)Whoever does not honour the Son does not honour the Father who sent him. 24 Truly, truly, I say to you, (N)whoever hears my word and (O)believes him who sent me has eternal life. He (P)does not come into judgement, but (Q)has passed from death to life.

25 “Truly, truly, I say to you, (R)an hour is coming, and is now here, when (S)the dead will hear (T)the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear (U)will live. 26 (V)For as the Father has life in himself, (W)so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. 27 And he (X)has given him authority to execute judgement, because he is the Son of Man. 28 Do not marvel at this, for (Y)an hour is coming when (Z)all who are in the tombs will hear his voice 29 and come out, (AA)those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgement.

Witnesses to Jesus

30 (AB)“I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and (AC)my judgement is just, because (AD)I seek not my own will (AE)but the will of him who sent me. 31 (AF)If I alone bear witness about myself, my testimony is not deemed true. 32 There is (AG)another who bears witness about me, and (AH)I know that the testimony that he bears about me is true. 33 (AI)You sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth. 34 Not that (AJ)the testimony that I receive is from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved. 35 He was a burning and (AK)shining lamp, and (AL)you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light. 36 But (AM)the testimony that I have is greater than that of John. For (AN)the works that the Father has given me (AO)to accomplish, the very works that I am doing, (AP)bear witness about me that (AQ)the Father has sent me. 37 And the Father who sent me (AR)has himself borne witness about me. His voice you have never heard, (AS)his form you have never seen, 38 and (AT)you do not have his word abiding in you, for you do not believe the one whom he has sent. 39 (AU)You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and (AV)it is they that bear witness about me, 40 yet (AW)you refuse to come to me that you may have life.
