Acts 2:1-21

The Coming of the Holy Spirit

When (A)the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like (B)a mighty rushing wind, and (C)it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues (D)as of fire appeared to them and rested[a] on each one of them. And they were all (E)filled with the Holy Spirit and began (F)to speak in other tongues (G)as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. And (H)at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language. And (I)they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking (J)Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? Parthians and (K)Medes and (L)Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, 11 both Jews and (M)proselytes, Cretans and Arabians—we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.” 12 And (N)all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” 13 But others (O)mocking said, “They are filled with new wine.”

Peter's Sermon at Pentecost

14 But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them: “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words. 15 For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, (P)since it is only the third hour of the day.[b] 16 But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel:

17 (Q)“‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares,
(R)that I will pour out my Spirit (S)on all flesh,
and your sons and (T)your daughters shall prophesy,
    and your young men shall see visions,
    and your old men shall dream dreams;
18 even on my male servants[c] and female servants
    in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and (U)they shall prophesy.
19 And I will show wonders in the heavens above
    and signs on the earth below,
    blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke;
20 (V)the sun shall be turned to darkness
    and the moon to blood,
    before (W)the day of the Lord comes, the great and magnificent day.
21 And it shall come to pass that (X)everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.’

Numbers 11:24-30

24 So Moses went out and told the people the words of the Lord. (A)And he gathered seventy men of the elders of the people and placed them round the tent. 25 Then (B)the Lord came down in the cloud and spoke to him, and took some of the Spirit that was on him and put it on the seventy elders. And as soon as the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied. But they did not continue doing it.

26 Now two men remained in the camp, one named Eldad, and the other named Medad, and the Spirit rested on them. They were among those registered, but they (C)had not gone out to the tent, and so they prophesied in the camp. 27 And a young man ran and told Moses, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.” 28 And (D)Joshua the son of Nun, the assistant of Moses from his youth, said, “My lord Moses, (E)stop them.” 29 But Moses said to him, “Are you jealous for my sake? (F)Would that all the Lord's people were prophets, that the Lord would put his Spirit on them!” 30 And Moses and the elders of Israel returned to the camp.

Psalm 104:24-34

24 O Lord, how manifold are your works!
    In (A)wisdom have you made them all;
    the earth is full of your creatures.
25 Here is the sea, great and wide,
    (B)which teems with creatures innumerable,
    living things both small and great.
26 There go the ships,
    and (C)Leviathan, which you formed to (D)play in it.[a]
27 These (E)all look to you,
    to (F)give them their food in due season.
28 When you give it to them, they gather it up;
    when you (G)open your hand, they are filled with good things.
29 When you (H)hide your face, they are (I)dismayed;
    when you (J)take away their breath, they die
    and (K)return to their dust.
30 When you (L)send forth your Spirit,[b] they are created,
    and you (M)renew the face of the ground.
31 May the glory of the Lord (N)endure for ever;
    may the Lord (O)rejoice in his works,
32 who looks on the earth and it (P)trembles,
    who (Q)touches the mountains and they smoke!
33 I will sing to the Lord (R)as long as I live;
    I will sing praise to my God while I have being.
34 May my (S)meditation be pleasing to him,
    for I rejoice in the Lord.

Psalm 104:35

35 Let (A)sinners be consumed from the earth,
    and let the wicked be no more!
(B)Bless the Lord, O my soul!
(C)Praise the Lord!

1 Corinthians 12:3-13

Therefore I want you to understand that (A)no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is (B)accursed!” and (C)no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit.

Now (D)there are varieties of gifts, but (E)the same Spirit; and (F)there are varieties of service, but (G)the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is (H)the same God who empowers them all in everyone. (I)To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of (J)wisdom, and to another the utterance of (K)knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another (L)faith by the same Spirit, to another (M)gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 to another (N)the working of miracles, to another (O)prophecy, to another (P)the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another (Q)various kinds of tongues, to another (R)the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, (S)who apportions to each one individually (T)as he wills.

One Body with Many Members

12 For just as (U)the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, (V)so it is with Christ. 13 For (W)in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—(X)Jews or Greeks, slaves[a] or free—and (Y)all were made to drink of one Spirit.

John 20:19-23

Jesus Appears to the Disciples

19 (A)On the evening (B)of that day, the first day of the week, (C)the doors being locked where the disciples were (D)for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, (E)“Peace be with you.” 20 When he had said this, (F)he showed them his hands and his side. Then (G)the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. 21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As (H)the Father has sent me, (I)even so I am sending you.” 22 And when he had said this, he (J)breathed on them and said to them, (K)“Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 (L)If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.”

John 7:37-39

Rivers of Living Water

37 (A)On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, (B)“If anyone thirsts, let him (C)come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, (D)as[a] the Scripture has said, (E)‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of (F)living water.’” 39 Now (G)this he said about the Spirit, (H)whom those who believed in him were to receive, (I)for as yet the Spirit had not been (J)given, (K)because Jesus was not yet glorified.
