Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
Psalm 2[a]
2 Why[b] do the nations rebel?[c]
Why[d] are the countries[e] devising[f] plots that will fail?[g]
2 The kings of the earth[h] form a united front;[i]
the rulers collaborate[j]
against the Lord and his anointed king.[k]
3 They say,[l] “Let’s tear off the shackles they’ve put on us.[m]
Let’s free ourselves from[n] their ropes.”
4 The one enthroned[o] in heaven laughs in disgust;[p]
the Lord taunts[q] them.
5 Then he angrily speaks to them
and terrifies them in his rage,[r] saying,[s]
6 “I myself[t] have installed[u] my king
on Zion, my holy hill.”
7 The king says,[v] “I will announce the Lord’s decree. He said to me:[w]
‘You are my son.[x] This very day I have become your father.
8 Ask me,
and I will give you the nations as your inheritance,[y]
the ends of the earth as your personal property.
9 You will break them[z] with an iron scepter;[aa]
you will smash them like a potter’s jar.’”[ab]
10 So now, you kings, do what is wise;[ac]
you rulers of the earth, submit to correction.[ad]
11 Serve[ae] the Lord in fear.
Repent in terror.[af]
12 Give sincere homage.[ag]
Otherwise he[ah] will be angry,[ai]
and you will die because of your behavior,[aj]
when his anger quickly ignites.[ak]
How blessed[al] are all who take shelter in him![am]
20 When Elijah arrived, Ahab said to him,[a] “So, you have found me, my enemy!” Elijah[b] replied, “I have found you, because you are committed[c] to doing evil in the sight of[d] the Lord. 21 The Lord says,[e] ‘Look, I am ready to bring disaster[f] on you. I will destroy you[g] and cut off every last male belonging to Ahab in Israel, including even the weak and incapacitated.[h] 22 I will make your dynasty[i] like those of Jeroboam son of Nebat and Baasha son of Ahijah because you angered me and made Israel sin.’[j] 23 The Lord says this about Jezebel, ‘Dogs will devour Jezebel by the outer wall[k] of Jezreel.’ 24 As for Ahab’s family, dogs will eat the ones[l] who die in the city, and the birds of the sky will eat the ones who die in the country.” 25 (There had never been anyone like Ahab, who was firmly committed[m] to doing evil in the sight of[n] the Lord, urged on by his wife Jezebel.[o] 26 He was so wicked he worshiped the disgusting idols,[p] just as the Amorites[q] whom the Lord had driven out from before the Israelites.)
27 When Ahab heard these words, he tore his clothes, put on sackcloth, and fasted. He slept in sackcloth and walked around dejected. 28 The Lord’s message came to Elijah the Tishbite, 29 “Have you noticed how Ahab shows remorse[r] before me? Because he shows remorse before me, I will not bring disaster on his dynasty during his lifetime, but during the reign of his son.”[s]
9 As they were coming down from the mountain, he gave them orders not to tell anyone what they had seen until after the Son of Man had risen from the dead. 10 They kept this statement to themselves, discussing what this rising from the dead meant.
11 Then[a] they asked him,[b] “Why do the experts in the law[c] say that Elijah must come first?” 12 He said to them, “Elijah does indeed come first, and restores all things. And why is it written that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be despised? 13 But I tell you that Elijah has certainly come, and they did to him whatever they wanted, just as it is written about him.”
