Egypt Plunders Jerusalem

12 ^(A)When the rule of Rehoboam was established ^(B)and he was strong, ^(C)he abandoned the law of the Lord, and all Israel with him. ^2 (D)In the fifth year of King Rehoboam, because they had been unfaithful to the Lord, ^(E)Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem ³ with 1,200 chariots and 60,000 horsemen. And the people were without number who came with him from Egypt—^(F)Libyans, Sukkiim, and Ethiopians. ⁴ And he took ^(G)the fortified cities of Judah and came as far as Jerusalem. ⁵ Then ^(H)Shemaiah the prophet came to Rehoboam and to the princes of Judah, who had gathered at Jerusalem because of Shishak, and said to them, “Thus says the Lord, ^(I)‘You abandoned me, so I have abandoned you to the hand of Shishak.’” ⁶ Then the princes of ^(J)Israel and the king humbled themselves and said, ^(K)“The Lord is righteous.” ⁷ When the Lord saw that they humbled themselves, the word of the Lord came to Shemaiah: ^(L)“They have humbled themselves. I will not destroy them, but I will grant them some deliverance, ^(M)and my wrath shall not be poured out on Jerusalem by the hand of Shishak. ⁸ Nevertheless, they shall be servants to him, ^(N)that they may know my service and the service of the kingdoms of the countries.”

^9 (O)So Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem. He took away the treasures of the house of the Lord and the treasures of the king's house. He took away everything. He also took away ^(P)the shields of gold that Solomon had made, ¹⁰ and King Rehoboam made in their place shields of bronze and committed them to the hands of the officers of the guard, who kept the door of the king's house. ¹¹ And as often as the king went into the house of the Lord, the guard came and carried them and brought them back to the guardroom. ¹² And when ^(Q)he humbled himself the wrath of the Lord turned from him, so as not to make a complete destruction. Moreover, ^(R)conditions were good^[a] in Judah.

⁷ Remember ^(A)your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life, and ^(B)imitate their faith. ⁸ Jesus Christ is ^(C)the same yesterday and today and for ever. ⁹ Do not be ^(D)led away by diverse and strange teachings, for it is good for the heart to be strengthened by grace, ^(E)not by foods, which have not benefited those devoted to them. ¹⁰ We have an altar ^(F)from which those who serve the tent have no right to eat. ¹¹ For ^(G)the bodies of those animals whose blood is brought into the holy places by the high priest as a sacrifice for sin are burned ^(H)outside the camp. ¹² So Jesus also ^(I)suffered ^(J)outside the gate in order to sanctify the people ^(K)through his own blood. ¹³ Therefore let us go to him outside the camp and bear ^(L)the reproach he endured. ¹⁴ For ^(M)here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city that is to come. ^15 (N)Through him then let us continually offer up ^(O)a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, ^(P)the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name. ¹⁶ Do not neglect to do good and ^(Q)to share what you have, for such ^(R)sacrifices are pleasing to God.

¹⁷ Obey ^(S)your leaders and submit to them, ^(T)for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to ^(U)give an account. ^(V)Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you.

^18 (W)Pray for us, for we are sure that we have a clear conscience, desiring to act honourably in all things. ¹⁹ I urge you the more earnestly to do this in order ^(X)that I may be restored to you the sooner.

²⁰ Now ^(Y)may the God of peace ^(Z)who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, ^(AA)the great shepherd of the sheep, by ^(AB)the blood of the eternal covenant, ^21 (AC)equip you with everything good that you may do his will, ^(AD)working in us^[a] that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, ^(AE)to whom be glory for ever and ever.
