Psalm 127

Laboring and Prospering with the Lord

A Song of Ascents. Of Solomon.

127 Unless the Lord builds the house,
They labor in vain who build it;
Unless (A)the Lord guards the city,
The watchman stays awake in vain.
It is vain for you to rise up early,
To sit up late,
To (B)eat the bread of sorrows;
For so He gives His beloved sleep.

Behold, (C)children are a heritage from the Lord,
(D)The fruit of the womb is a (E)reward.
Like arrows in the hand of a warrior,
So are the children of one’s youth.
(F)Happy is the man who has his quiver full of them;
(G)They shall not be ashamed,
But shall speak with their enemies in the gate.

Ecclesiastes 3:16-4:8

Injustice Seems to Prevail

16 Moreover (A)I saw under the sun:

In the place of [a]judgment,
Wickedness was there;
And in the place of righteousness,
[b]Iniquity was there.

17 I said in my heart,

(B)“God shall judge the righteous and the wicked,
For there is a time there for every [c]purpose and for every work.”

18 I said in my heart, “Concerning the condition of the sons of men, God tests them, that they may see that they themselves are like animals.” 19 (C)For what happens to the sons of men also happens to animals; one thing befalls them: as one dies, so dies the other. Surely, they all have one breath; man has no advantage over animals, for all is vanity. 20 All go to one place: (D)all are from the dust, and all return to dust. 21 (E)Who[d] knows the spirit of the sons of men, which goes upward, and the spirit of the animal, which goes down to the earth? 22 (F)So I perceived that nothing is better than that a man should rejoice in his own works, for (G)that is his [e]heritage. (H)For who can bring him to see what will happen after him?

The Uselessness of Selfish Toil

Then I returned and considered all the (I)oppression that is done under the sun:

And look! The tears of the oppressed,
But they have no comforter—
[f]On the side of their oppressors there is power,
But they have no comforter.
(J)Therefore I praised the dead who were already dead,
More than the living who are still alive.
(K)Yet, better than both is he who has never existed,
Who has not seen the evil work that is done under the sun.

The Vanity of Selfish Toil

Again, I saw that for all toil and every skillful work a man is envied by his neighbor. This also is vanity and grasping for the wind.

(L)The fool folds his hands
And consumes his own flesh.
(M)Better a handful with quietness
Than both hands full, together with toil and grasping for the wind.

Then I returned, and I saw vanity under the sun:

There is one alone, without [g]companion:
He has neither son nor brother.
Yet there is no end to all his labors,
Nor is his (N)eye satisfied with riches.
But (O)he never asks,
“For whom do I toil and deprive myself of (P)good?”
This also is vanity and a [h]grave misfortune.

Colossians 4:2-6

Christian Graces

(A)Continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it (B)with thanksgiving; (C)meanwhile praying also for us, that God would (D)open to us a door for the word, to speak (E)the [a]mystery of Christ, (F)for which I am also in chains, that I may make it manifest, as I ought to speak.

(G)Walk in (H)wisdom toward those who are outside, (I)redeeming the time. Let your speech always be (J)with grace, (K)seasoned with salt, (L)that you may know how you ought to answer each one.
