Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
81 1 An exhortation to praise God both in heart and voice for his benefits, 8 and to worship him only. 11 God condemneth their ingratitude, 12 and showeth what great benefit they have lost through their own malice.
To him that excelleth upon [a]Gittith. A Psalm committeth to Asaph.
1 Sing [b]joyfully unto God our strength: sing loud unto the God of Jacob.
2 Take the song and bring forth the timbrel, the pleasant harp with the viol.
3 Blow the trumpet in the [c]new moon, even in the time appointed at our feast day.
4 For this is a statute for Israel, and a Law of the God of Jacob.
5 He set this in [d]Joseph for a testimony, when he came out of the land of Egypt, where I heard a language, that [e]I understood not.
6 I have withdrawn his shoulder from the burden, and his hands have left the [f]pots.
7 Thou calledst in affliction, and I delivered thee, and [g]answered thee in the secret of the thunder: I proved thee at the waters of [h]Meribah. Selah.
8 [i]Hear, O my people, and I will protest unto thee: O Israel, if thou wilt hearken unto me,
9 And wilt have no strange god in thee, neither worship any strange god,
10 (For I am the Lord thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt:) [j]open thy mouth wide, and I will fill it.
11 But my people would not hear my voice, and Israel would none of me,
12 So I gave them up unto the hardness of their heart, and they have walked in their own counsels.
13 [k]Oh that my people had hearkened unto me, and Israel had walked in my ways!
14 I would soon have humbled their enemies, and turned mine hand [l]against their adversaries.
15 The haters of the Lord should have been subject unto him, and their time [m]should have endured forever.
16 And God would have fed them with the [n]fat of wheat, and with honey out of the rock would I have sufficed thee.
4 Hear ye the word of the Lord, O house of Jacob, and all the families of the house of Israel.
5 Thus saith the Lord, What iniquity have your fathers found in me, that they are gone [a]far from me, and have walked after vanity, and are become [b]vain?
6 For they said not, Where is the Lord that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, that led us through the wilderness, through a desert, and waste land, through a dry land, and by [c]the shadow of death, by a land that no man passed through, and where no man dwelt?
7 And I brought you into a plentiful country, to eat the fruit thereof, and the commodities of the same: but when ye entered, ye defiled [d]my land, and made mine heritage an abomination.
8 The priests said not, [e]Where is the Lord? and they that should minister the [f]Law, knew me not: the [g]pastors also offended against me, and the prophets prophesied in [h]Baal, and went after things that did not profit.
9 Wherefore I will yet [i]plead with you, saith the Lord, and I will plead with your children’s children.
10 For go ye to the isles of [j]Chittim, and behold, and send unto [k]Kedar, and take diligent heed, and see whether there be such things.
11 Hath any nation changed their gods, which yet are no gods? but my people have changed their [l]glory, for that which doth not [m]profit.
12 O ye [n]heavens, be astonied at this: be afraid and utterly confounded, saith the Lord.
13 For my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me [o]the fountain of living waters, to dig them pits, even broken pits that can hold no water.
14 [a]Now when [b]half the feast was done, Jesus went up into the Temple, and taught.
15 And the Jews marveled, saying, How knoweth this man the Scriptures, seeing that he never learned!
16 [c]Jesus answered them, and said, [d]My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.
17 If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.
18 [e]He that speaketh of himself, seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.
19 (A)[f]Did not Moses give you a Law, and yet none of you keepeth the Law? (B)Why go ye about to kill me?
20 The people answered, and said, Thou hast a devil: who goeth about to kill thee?
21 [g]Jesus answered, and said unto them, I have done one work, and ye all marvel.
22 (C)Moses therefore gave unto you circumcision, (not because it is of Moses, but of the (D)fathers) and ye on the Sabbath day circumcise a man.
23 If a man on the Sabbath receive circumcision, that the [h]Law of Moses should not be broken, be ye angry with me, because I have made a man every whit whole on the Sabbath day?
24 (E)[i]Judge not [j]according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.
25 ¶ [k]Then said some of them of Jerusalem, Is not this he whom they go about to kill?
26 And behold, he speaketh openly, and they say nothing to him: do the rulers know indeed that this is indeed that Christ?
27 [l]Howbeit we know this man whence he is: but when that Christ cometh, no man shall know whence he is.
28 ¶ [m]Then cried Jesus in the Temple as he taught, saying, Ye both know me, and know whence I am: yet am I not come of myself, but he that sent me, is true, whom ye know not.
29 But I know him: for I am of him, and he hath sent me.
30 [n]Then they sought to take him, but no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come.
31 Now many of the people believed on him, and said, When that Christ cometh, will he do more miracles than this man hath done?
37 [a]Now in the [b]last and (A)great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.
38 He that believeth in me, (B)as saith the [c]Scripture, out of his belly shall flow rivers of water of life.
39 ((C)This spake he of the Spirit, which they that believed in him, should receive: for the [d]holy Ghost was not yet given, because that Jesus was not yet [e]glorified.)
