17 1 The Israelites come into Rephidim, and grudge for water. 6 Water is given them out of the rock. 11 Moses holdeth up his hands, and they overcome the Amalekites. 15 Moses buildeth an altar to the Lord.
1 And all the Congregation of the children of Israel departed from the wilderness of Sin, by their journeys at the [a]commandment of the Lord, and camped in [b]Rephidim, where was no water for the people to drink.
2 (A)Wherefore the people contended with Moses, and said, Give us water, that we may drink. And Moses said unto them, Why contend ye with me? wherefore do ye [c]tempt the Lord?
3 So the people thirsted there for water, and the people murmured against Moses, and said, Wherefore hast thou thus brought us out of Egypt, to kill us, and our children, and our cattle with thirst?
4 And Moses cried unto the Lord, saying, What shall I do to this people? for they be almost ready to [d]stone me.
5 And the Lord answered to Moses, Go before the people, and take with thee of the Elders of Israel: and thy rod wherewith thou (B)smotest the river, take in thine hand, and go:
6 (C)Behold, I will stand there before thee upon the rock in Horeb, and thou shalt smite on the rock, and water shall come out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the Elders of Israel.
7 And he called the name of the place [e]Massah and [f]Meribah, because of the contention of the children of Israel, and because they had tempted the Lord, saying, Is the [g]Lord among us, or no?
95 1 An earnest exhortation to praise God, 4 for the government of the world and the election of the Church. 8 An admonition not to follow the rebellion of the old fathers, that tempted God in the wilderness. 11 For the which they might not enter into the land of promise.
1 Come, let us rejoice unto the Lord: let us sing [a]aloud unto the rock of our salvation.
2 Let us come before his face with praise: let us sing loud unto him with Psalms.
3 For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all [b]gods,
4 In whose hand are the deep places of the earth, and the [c]heights of the mountains are his,
5 To whom the Sea belongeth, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land.
6 Come, let us [d]worship and fall down, and kneel before the Lord our maker.
7 For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his [e]hand: today, if ye will hear his voice,
8 [f]Harden not your heart, as in [g]Meribah, and as in the day of [h]Massah in the wilderness,
9 When your fathers (A)tempted me, proved me, though they had seen my work.
10 Forty years have I contended with this generation, and said, They are a people that [i]err in heart, for they have not known my ways.
11 Wherefore I sware in my wrath, saying, Surely they shall not enter into [j]my rest.
5 1 He amplifieth 2 Christ’s righteousness, which is laid hold on by faith, 5 who was given for the weak, 8 and sinful. 14 He compareth Christ with Adam. 17 Death with Life, 20 and the Law with Grace.
1 Then being [a]justified by faith, we have peace toward God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
2 (A)[b]By whom also through faith we have [c]had this access into this grace [d]wherein we [e]stand, [f]and [g]rejoice under the hope of the glory of God.
3 [h]Neither that only, but also we (B)rejoice in tribulations, [i]knowing that tribulation bringeth forth patience.
4 And patience experience, and experience hope.
5 [j]And hope maketh not ashamed, because the [k]love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the holy Ghost, which is given unto us.
6 [l]For Christ, when we were yet of no strength, at his [m]time died for the (C)ungodly.
7 [n]Doubtless one will scarce die [o]for a righteous man: but yet for a good man it may be that one dare die.
8 But God [p]setteth out his love towards us, seeing that while we were yet [q]sinners, Christ died for us.
9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from [r]wrath through him.
10 For if when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life,
11 [s]And not only so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.
5 [a]Then came he to a city of Samaria called Sychar, near unto the possession that (A)Jacob gave to his son Joseph.
6 And there was Jacob’s Well. Jesus then wearied in the journey, sat [b]thus on the Well: it was about the [c]sixth hour.
7 There came a woman of Samaria to draw water. Jesus said unto her, Give me drink.
8 For his disciples were gone away into the city, to buy meat.
9 Then said the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it, that thou being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? For the Jews [d]meddle not with the Samaritans.
10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest [e]that gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me drink, thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee [f]water of life.
11 The woman said unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the Well is deep: from whence then hast thou that water of life?
12 Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the Well, and he himself drank thereof, and his sons, and his cattle.
13 Jesus answered, and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water, shall thirst again:
14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him, shall never be more athirst: but the water that I shall give him, shall be in him a well of water, springing up into everlasting life.
15 The woman said unto him, Sir, give me of that water, that I may not thirst, neither come hither to draw.
16 Jesus said unto her, Go, call thine husband, and come hither.
17 The woman answered, and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, thou hast well said, I have no husband.
18 For thou hast had five husbands, and he whom thou now hast, is not thine husband: that saidest thou truly.
19 The woman said unto him, Sir, I see that thou art a Prophet.
20 [g]Our fathers worshipped in this [h]mountain, and ye say, that in (B)Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.
21 Jesus said unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor at Jerusalem worship the Father.
22 Ye worship that which ye (C)know not: we worship that which we know: for salvation is of the Jews.
23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in [i]Spirit and Truth: for the Father requireth even such to worship him.
24 (D)God is a [j]Spirit, and they that worship him, must worship him in Spirit and Truth.
25 The woman said unto him, I know well that Messiah shall come, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things.
26 Jesus said unto her, I am he, that speak unto thee.
27 ¶ And upon that, came his disciples, and marveled that he talked with a woman: yet no man said unto him, What askest thou? or why talkest thou with her.
28 The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and said to the men,
29 Come, see a man which hath told me all things that ever I did: is not he that Christ?
30 Then they went out of the city, and came unto him.
31 ¶ In the meanwhile, the disciples prayed him, saying, Master, eat.
32 [k]But he said unto them, I have meat to eat, that ye know not of.
33 Then said the disciples between themselves, Hath any man brought him meat?
34 Jesus said unto them, My meat is that I may do the will of him that sent me, and finish his work.
35 [l]Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? Behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the regions: (E)for they are white already unto harvest.
36 [m]And he that reapeth, receiveth reward, and gathered fruit unto life eternal, that both he that soweth, and he that reapeth might rejoice together.
37 For herein is the [n]saying true, that one soweth and another reapeth.
38 I sent you to reap that, whereon ye bestowed no labor: other men labored, and ye are entered into their labors.
39 [o]Now many of the Samaritans of that city believed in him, for the saying of the woman which testified, He hath told me all things that ever I did.
40 Then when the Samaritans were come unto him, they besought him, that he would tarry with them: and he abode there two days.
41 And many more believed because of his own word.
42 And they said unto the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy saying: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed that Christ the Savior of the world.
