Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
6 [a](A)Sacrifice and meal offering [b]You have not desired;
My ears You have [c]opened;
Burnt offering and sin offering You have not required.
7 Then I said, “Behold, I come;
In the scroll of the book it is [d]written of me.
8 (B)I desire to do Your will, O my God;
(C)Your law is within my inner being.”
9 I (D)proclaim good news of righteousness in the great assembly;
Behold, I do (E)not restrain my lips,
O Yahweh, (F)You know.
10 I do (G)not conceal Your righteousness within my heart;
I (H)speak of Your faithfulness and Your salvation;
I do not hide Your lovingkindness and Your truth from the great assembly.
11 You, O Yahweh, will not withhold Your compassion from me;
[e]Your (I)lovingkindness and Your truth will continually guard me.
12 For evils beyond number have (J)surrounded me;
My (K)iniquities have overtaken me, so that I am not able to see;
They are (L)more numerous than the hairs of my head,
And my (M)heart has [f]failed me.
13 (N)Be pleased, O Yahweh, to deliver me;
Make (O)haste, O Yahweh, to help me.
14 Let those be (P)ashamed and humiliated together
Who (Q)seek my [g]life to sweep it away;
Let those be turned back and dishonored
Who delight in [h]evil against me.
15 Let those (R)be [i]appalled because of their shame
Who (S)say to me, “Aha, aha!”
16 (T)Let all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You;
Let those who love Your salvation (U)say continually,
“Yahweh be magnified!”
17 As for me, (V)I am afflicted and needy,
[j](W)May the Lord think of me.
You are my help and the One who rescues me;
Do not delay, O my God.
The Suffering Servant
53 (A)Who has believed our report?
And to whom has the arm of Yahweh been revealed?
2 For He grew up before Him like a (B)tender [a]shoot,
And like a root out of parched ground;
He has (C)no stately form or majesty
That we should look upon Him,
Nor appearance that we should desire Him.
3 He was (D)despised and forsaken of men,
A man of [b]sorrows and (E)acquainted with [c]grief;
And like one from whom men hide their face
He was (F)despised, and we did not (G)esteem Him.
4 Surely our [d]griefs He Himself [e](H)bore,
And our [f]sorrows He [g]carried;
Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken,
[h]Smitten of (I)God, and afflicted.
5 But He was [i]pierced through for (J)our transgressions,
He was crushed for (K)our iniquities;
The (L)chastening for our peace fell upon Him,
And by (M)His [j]wounds we are healed.
6 All of us like sheep have gone astray,
Each of us has turned to his own way;
But Yahweh has caused the iniquity of us all
To [k]fall on Him.
7 He was oppressed and He was afflicted,
Yet He did not (N)open His mouth;
(O)Like a lamb that is led to slaughter,
And like a sheep that is silent before its shearers,
So He did not open His mouth.
8 By oppression and judgment He was taken away;
And as for His generation, who considered
That He was cut off out of the land of [l]the living,
(P)That for the transgression of my people, striking was due to Him?
9 So His grave was assigned with wicked men,
Yet He was with a (Q)rich man in His death,
(R)Because He had (S)done no violence,
Nor was there any deceit in His mouth.
10 But [m]Yahweh was pleased
To (T)crush Him, [n](U)putting Him to grief;
If You would place His soul as a guilt (V)offering,
He will see (W)His seed,
He will prolong His days,
And the [o]good (X)pleasure of Yahweh will succeed in His hand.
11 As a result of the [p]anguish of His soul,
He will (Y)see [q]it and be satisfied;
By His (Z)knowledge the Righteous One,
My Servant, will [r]justify the many,
As He will (AA)bear their iniquities.
12 Therefore, I will divide for Him a (AB)portion with the many,
And He will divide the spoil with the strong;
Because He poured out (AC)His soul to death,
And was (AD)numbered with the transgressors;
Yet He Himself [s](AE)bore the sin of many,
And interceded for the transgressors.
Christ’s Sacrifice Once for All
10 For the Law, since it has only (A)a shadow of (B)the good things to come and not the very [a]form of things, [b]can (C)never, by the same sacrifices which they offer continually year by year, (D)make perfect those who draw near. 2 Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered, because the worshipers, having once been cleansed, would no longer have (E)consciousness of sins? 3 But (F)in [c]those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins year by year. 4 For it is (G)impossible for the (H)blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.
