Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
Psalm 122
A Prayer for Jerusalem
A song of ascents. Of David.
1 I rejoiced with those who said to me,
“Let’s go to the house of the Lord.”(A)
2 Our feet were standing
within your gates, Jerusalem(B)—
3 Jerusalem, built as a city should be,
solidly united,(C)
4 where the tribes, the Lord’s tribes, go up
to give thanks to the name of the Lord.(D)
(This is an ordinance for Israel.(E))
5 There, thrones for judgment are placed,
thrones of the house of David.(F)
6 Pray for the well-being[a] of Jerusalem:
“May those who love you be secure;(G)
7 may there be peace within your walls,
security within your fortresses.”(H)
8 Because of my brothers and friends,
I will say, “May peace be in you.”[b](I)
9 Because of the house of the Lord our God,
I will pursue your prosperity.(J)
15 Now, Lord our God—who brought your people out of the land of Egypt with a strong hand(A) and made your name renowned(B) as it is this day—we have sinned, we have acted wickedly. 16 Lord, in keeping with all your righteous acts, may your anger and wrath(C) turn away from your city Jerusalem, your holy mountain;(D) for because of our sins and the iniquities of our ancestors, Jerusalem and your people have become an object of ridicule to all those around us.
17 Therefore, our God, hear the prayer and the petitions of your servant. Make your face shine(E) on your desolate sanctuary(F) for the Lord’s sake. 18 Listen closely,[a] my God, and hear. Open your eyes and see our desolations and the city that bears your name. For we are not presenting our petitions before you based on our righteous acts, but based on your abundant compassion. 19 Lord, hear! Lord, forgive! Lord, listen and act! My God, for your own sake, do not delay,(G) because your city and your people bear your name.
Proud or Humble
4 What is the source of wars and fights among you? Don’t they come from your passions(A) that wage war within you?[a] 2 You desire and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and wage war.[b] You do not have because you do not ask. 3 You ask and don’t receive because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures.(B)
4 You adulterous people![c] Don’t you know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? So whoever wants to be the friend of the world becomes the enemy of God.(C) 5 Or do you think it’s without reason that the Scripture says: The spirit he made to dwell in us envies intensely?[d](D)
6 But he gives greater grace. Therefore he says:
7 Therefore, submit to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.(F) 8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.(G) 9 Be miserable and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom.(H) 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.
