Psalm 98

Psalm 98

Praise the King

A psalm.

Sing a new song to the Lord,(A)
for he has performed wonders;
his right hand and holy arm
have won him victory.(B)
The Lord has made his victory known;
he has revealed his righteousness
in the sight of the nations.(C)
He has remembered his love
and faithfulness to the house of Israel;
all the ends of the earth
have seen our God’s victory.(D)

Let the whole earth shout to the Lord;
be jubilant, shout for joy, and sing.(E)
Sing to the Lord with the lyre,
with the lyre and melodious song.(F)
With trumpets and the blast of the ram’s horn
shout triumphantly
in the presence of the Lord, our King.(G)

Let the sea and all that fills it,
the world and those who live in it, resound.(H)
Let the rivers clap their hands;
let the mountains shout together for joy(I)
before the Lord,
for he is coming to judge the earth.
He will judge the world righteously
and the peoples fairly.(J)

Ezekiel 10:1-19

God’s Glory Leaves the Temple

10 Then I looked, and there above the expanse over the heads(A) of the cherubim was something like a throne with the appearance of lapis lazuli. The Lord spoke to the man clothed in linen and said, “Go inside the wheelwork beneath the cherubim. Fill your hands with blazing coals from among the cherubim and scatter them over the city.”(B) So he went in as I watched.

Now the cherubim were standing to the south of the temple when the man went in, and the cloud(C) filled the inner court.(D) Then the glory of the Lord rose from above the cherub to the threshold of the temple.(E) The temple was filled with the cloud,(F) and the court was filled with the brightness of the Lord’s glory.(G) The sound of the cherubim’s wings could be heard as far as the outer court; it was like the voice of God Almighty when he speaks.

After the Lord commanded the man clothed in linen, saying, “Take fire from inside the wheelwork, from among the cherubim,” the man went in and stood beside a wheel. Then the cherub reached out his hand to the fire that was among them. He took some and put it into the hands of the man clothed in linen, who took it and went out. The cherubim appeared to have the form of human hands under their wings.(H)

I looked, and there were four wheels beside the cherubim,(I) one wheel beside each cherub. The luster of the wheels was like the gleam of beryl.(J) 10 In appearance, all four looked alike, like a wheel within a wheel. 11 When they moved, they would go in any of the four directions,(K) without pivoting as they moved. But wherever the head faced, they would go in that direction, without pivoting as they went. 12 Their entire bodies,(L) including their backs, hands, wings, and the wheels that the four of them had, were full of eyes all around.(M) 13 As I listened the wheels were called “the wheelwork.” 14 Each one had four faces:(N) one was the face of a cherub, the second the face of a human, the third the face of a lion, and the fourth the face of an eagle.

15 The cherubim ascended; these were the living creatures I had seen by the Chebar Canal.(O) 16 When the cherubim moved, the wheels moved beside them, and when they lifted their wings to rise from the earth, even then the wheels did not veer away from them. 17 When the cherubim stopped,(P) the wheels stood still, and when they ascended, the wheels ascended with them, for the spirit of the living creatures was in them.

18 Then the glory of the Lord moved away from the threshold of the temple(Q) and stopped above the cherubim.(R) 19 The cherubim lifted their wings and ascended from the earth right before my eyes;(S) the wheels were beside them as they went. The glory of the God of Israel was above them, and it stopped at the entrance to the eastern gate of the Lord’s house.

Luke 17:20-37

The Coming of the Kingdom

20 When he was(A) asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come,(B) he answered them, “The kingdom of God is not coming with something observable; 21 no one will say,[a] ‘See here!’ or ‘There!’ For you see, the kingdom of God is in your midst.”[b]

22 Then he told the disciples, “The days are coming(C) when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, but you won’t see it.(D) 23 They will say to you,(E) ‘See there!’ or ‘See here!’ Don’t follow or run after them.(F) 24 For as the lightning flashes from horizon to horizon and lights up the sky, so the Son of Man will be in his day.(G) 25 But first it is necessary that he suffer many things and be rejected by this generation.(H)

26 “Just as it was in the days of Noah,(I) so it will be in the days of the Son of Man: 27 People went on eating, drinking, marrying and being given in marriage(J) until the day Noah boarded the ark,(K) and the flood came and destroyed them all. 28 It will be the same as it was in the days of Lot:(L) People went on eating, drinking, buying, selling, planting, building. 29 But on the day Lot left Sodom, fire and sulfur rained from heaven and destroyed(M) them all. 30 It(N) will be like that on the day the Son of Man is revealed.(O) 31 On that day, a man on the housetop, whose belongings are in the house, must not come down to get them. Likewise the man who is in the field must not turn back. 32 Remember Lot’s wife!(P) 33 Whoever tries to make his life secure[c][d] will lose it, and whoever loses his life will preserve it.(Q) 34 I tell you, on that night(R) two will be in one bed; one will be taken and the other will be left. 35 Two women will be grinding grain together; one will be taken and the other left.”[e]

37 “Where, Lord?” (S) they asked him.

He said to them, “Where the corpse is, there also the vultures(T) will be gathered.”
