Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
Psalm 141
Protection from Sin and Sinners
A psalm of David.
1 Lord, I call on you; hurry to help me.
Listen to my voice when I call on you.(A)
2 May my prayer be set before you as incense,(B)
the raising of my hands as the evening offering.(C)
3 Lord, set up a guard for my mouth;
keep watch at the door of my lips.(D)
4 Do not let my heart turn to any evil thing
or perform wicked acts with evildoers.
Do not let me feast on their delicacies.(E)
5 Let the righteous one strike me—
it is an act of faithful love;
let him rebuke me—
it is oil for my head;
let me[a] not refuse it.(F)
Even now my prayer is against
the evil acts of the wicked.[b](G)
6 When their rulers[c] will be thrown off
the sides of a cliff,
the people[d] will listen to my words,
for they are pleasing.(H)
Return of the Lord’s Glory
43 He led me to the gate,(A) the one that faces east, 2 and I saw the glory of the God of Israel(B) coming from the east.(C) His voice sounded like the roar of a huge torrent,(D) and the earth shone with his glory.(E) 3 The vision I saw(F) was like the one I had seen when he[a] came to destroy the city,(G) and like the ones I had seen by the Chebar Canal.(H) I fell facedown.(I) 4 The glory of the Lord entered the temple by way of the gate that faced east.(J) 5 Then the Spirit lifted me up(K) and brought me to the inner court, and the glory of the Lord filled the temple.(L)
6 While the man was standing beside me, I heard someone speaking to me from the temple.(M) 7 He said to me, “Son of man, this is the place of my throne and the place for the soles of my feet,(N) where I will dwell among the Israelites forever.(O) The house of Israel and their kings will no longer defile my holy name by their religious prostitution and by the corpses[b](P) of their kings at their high places.[c](Q) 8 Whenever they placed their threshold next to my threshold and their doorposts beside my doorposts, with only a wall between me and them, they were defiling my holy name by the detestable acts they committed.(R) So I destroyed them in my anger. 9 Now let them remove their prostitution and the corpses(S) of their kings far from me, and I will dwell among them forever.(T)
10 “As for you, son of man, describe the temple to the house of Israel,(U) so that they may be ashamed of their iniquities.(V) Let them measure its pattern,(W) 11 and they will be ashamed of all that they have done. Reveal[d] the design of the temple to them—its layout with its exits and entrances(X)—its complete design along with all its statutes, design specifications, and laws. Write it down in their sight(Y) so that they may observe its complete design and all its statutes and may carry them out.(Z) 12 This is the law of the temple: All its surrounding territory on top of the mountain(AA) will be especially holy. Yes, this is the law of the temple.
Jesus’s Lamenting over Jerusalem
37 “Jerusalem, Jerusalem,(A) who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her. How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks[a] under her wings, but you were not willing!(B) 38 See, your house is left to you desolate.(C) 39 For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord’!”[b](D)
Destruction of the Temple Predicted
24 As Jesus left and was going out of the temple,(E) his disciples(F) came up and called his attention to its buildings. 2 He replied to them, “Do you see all these things? Truly I tell you, not one stone will be left here on another that will not be thrown down.”
Signs of the End of the Age
3 While he was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples approached him privately and said, “Tell us, when will these things happen? And what is the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?” (G)
4 Jesus replied to them, “Watch out that no one deceives(H) you. 5 For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and they will deceive many.(I) 6 You are going to hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, because these things must take place, but the end is not yet. 7 For nation will rise up against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines[c](J) and earthquakes in various places.(K) 8 All these events are the beginning of labor pains.(L)
Persecutions Predicted
9 “Then they will hand you over to be persecuted, and they will kill you. You will be hated by all nations because of my name.(M) 10 Then many will fall away, betray one another, and hate one another. 11 Many false prophets(N) will rise up and deceive many. 12 Because lawlessness(O) will multiply, the love of many will grow cold. 13 But the one who endures to the end will be saved. 14 This good news of the kingdom will be proclaimed in all the world[d] as a testimony to all nations,(P) and then the end will come.(Q)
