Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
You Will Not Forsake My Soul
A [a]Mikhtam of David.
16 (A)Keep me, O God, for (B)I take refuge in You.
2 O my soul, you have said to Yahweh, “You are [b]my Lord;
I (C)have no good without You.”
3 As for the [c](D)saints who are in the earth,
They are the majestic ones (E)in whom is all my delight.
4 The [d](F)pains of those who have [e]bartered for another god will be multiplied;
I shall not pour out their drink offerings of (G)blood,
Nor will I (H)take their names upon my lips.
5 Yahweh is the (I)portion of my inheritance and my (J)cup;
You support my (K)lot.
6 The (L)lines have fallen to me in pleasant places;
Indeed, my inheritance is (M)beautiful to me.
7 I will bless Yahweh who has (N)counseled me;
Indeed, my [f](O)mind instructs me in the night.
8 (P)I have (Q)set Yahweh continually before me;
Because He is (R)at my right hand, (S)I will not be shaken.
9 Therefore (T)my heart is glad and (U)my glory rejoices;
My flesh also will (V)dwell securely.
10 For You (W)will not forsake my soul to Sheol;
You will not (X)give Your [g]Holy One over to see [h]corruption.
11 You will make known to me (Y)the path of life;
In (Z)Your presence is fullness of joy;
In Your right hand there are (AA)pleasures forever.
15 “(A)But [a]Jeshurun grew fat and kicked—
You grew fat, thick, and sleek—
(B)Then he abandoned God (C)who made him,
And treated (D)the Rock of his salvation with wicked foolishness.
16 (E)They made Him jealous with strange gods;
(F)With abominations they provoked Him to anger.
17 (G)They sacrificed to demons who were not God,
(H)To gods whom they have not known,
(I)New gods who came lately,
Whom your fathers did not dread.
18 You neglected (J)the Rock who begot you,
(K)And forgot the God who brought you forth.
19 “(L)And Yahweh saw this and spurned them
(M)Because of the provocation of His sons and daughters.
20 Then He said, ‘I will hide My face from them;
(N)I will see what their end shall be;
(O)For they are a perverse generation,
(P)Sons in whom is no faithfulness.
21 (Q)They have made Me jealous with what is not God;
They have provoked Me to anger with their [b](R)idols.
(S)So I will make them jealous with those who are not a people;
I will provoke them to anger with a wickedly foolish nation,
22 (T)For a fire is kindled in My anger,
And it burns to the lowest part of Sheol,
(U)And it consumes the earth with its produce,
And it sets on fire the foundations of the mountains.
23 ‘(V)I will heap calamities on them;
(W)I will exhaust My arrows on them.
24 (X)They will be wasted by famine, and consumed by [c]plague
(Y)And bitter destruction;
(Z)And the teeth of beasts I will send upon them,
(AA)With the venom of crawling things of the dust.
25 (AB)Outside the sword will bereave,
And inside terror—
(AC)Both choice man and virgin,
The nursing baby with the man of gray hair.
26 I would have said, “(AD)I will cut them to pieces;
(AE)I will cause the memory of them to cease from men,”
27 Had I not feared the provocation by the enemy,
Lest their adversaries misjudge,
Lest they say, “(AF)Our hand is [d]triumphant,
And Yahweh has not done all this.”’
39 (A)See now that I, I am He,
(B)And there is no god besides Me;
(C)It is I who put to death and give life.
(D)I have wounded, and it is I who heal,
(E)And there is no one who can deliver from My hand.
40 Indeed, (F)I lift up My hand to heaven,
And say, as I live forever,
41 (G)If I sharpen My [a]flashing sword,
And My hand takes hold on judgment,
(H)I will render vengeance on My adversaries,
And I will repay those who hate Me.
42 (I)I will make My arrows drunk with blood,
(J)And My sword will devour flesh,
With the blood of the slain and the captives,
From the long-haired [b]leaders of the enemy.’
43 (K)O nations, cause His people to shout for joy;
(L)For He will avenge the blood of His slaves,
(M)And He will render vengeance on His adversaries,
(N)And He will atone for His land and His people.”
21 But He [a](A)warned them and directed them not to tell this to anyone, 22 (B)saying, “(C)The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed and be raised up on the third day.”
Take Up Your Cross
23 And He was saying to them all, “(D)If anyone wishes to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me. 24 For (E)whoever wishes to save his [b]life will lose it, but whoever loses his [c]life for My sake, he is the one who will save it. 25 For what is a man profited if he gains the whole world, and (F)loses or forfeits himself? 26 (G)For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when He comes in His glory, and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels. 27 But I say to you truthfully, (H)there are some of those standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God.”
