Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
ט Teth
65 Lord, you have treated your servant well,
just as you promised.
66 Teach me good judgment and discernment,(A)
for I rely on your commands.
67 Before I was afflicted I went astray,(B)
but now I keep your word.
68 You are good,(C) and you do what is good;(D)
teach me your statutes.
69 The arrogant have smeared me with lies,(E)
but I obey your precepts with all my heart.(F)
70 Their hearts are hard and insensitive,(G)
but I delight in your instruction.(H)
71 It was good for me to be afflicted(I)
so that I could learn your statutes.
72 Instruction from your lips(J) is better for me
than thousands of gold and silver pieces.
The Day of Atonement
16 The Lord spoke to Moses after the death of two of Aaron’s sons when they approached the presence(A) of[a] the Lord and died.(B) 2 The Lord said to Moses, “Tell your brother Aaron that he may not come whenever he wants into the holy place(C) behind the curtain(D) in front of the mercy seat(E) on the ark or else he will die, because I appear in the cloud(F) above the mercy seat.(G)
3 “Aaron is to enter the most holy place(H) in this way: with a young bull for a sin offering and a ram for a burnt offering.(I) 4 He is to wear a holy linen tunic, and linen undergarments are to be on his body. He is to tie a linen sash around him and wrap his head with a linen turban.(J) These are holy garments; he must bathe his body with water before he wears them. 5 He is to take from the Israelite community two male goats for a sin offering and one ram for a burnt offering.(K)
20 “When he has finished making atonement for the most holy place, the tent of meeting, and the altar, he is to present the live male goat. 21 Aaron will lay both his hands on the head of the live goat and confess(A) over it all the Israelites’ iniquities(B) and rebellious acts—all their sins.(C) He is to put them on the goat’s head and send it away into the wilderness(D) by the man appointed for the task.[a] 22 The goat will carry all their iniquities into a desolate land,(E) and the man will release it there.
23 “Then Aaron is to enter the tent of meeting, take off the linen garments(F) he wore when he entered the most holy place, and leave them there. 24 He will bathe his body with water in a holy place(G) and put on his clothes.(H) Then he must go out and sacrifice his burnt offering and the people’s burnt offering; he will make atonement for himself and for the people. 25 He is to burn the fat of the sin offering on the altar. 26 The man who released the goat for an uninhabitable place is to wash his clothes and bathe his body with water; afterward he may reenter the camp. 27 The bull for the sin offering and the goat for the sin offering, whose blood was brought into the most holy place to make atonement, must be brought outside the camp(I) and their hide,(J) flesh, and waste burned.(K) 28 The one who burns them is to wash his clothes and bathe himself with water; afterward he may reenter the camp.
The Barren Fig Tree
18 Early in the morning,(A) as he was returning to the city, he was hungry. 19 Seeing a lone fig tree by the road, he went up to it and found nothing on it except leaves. And he said to it, “May no fruit ever come from you again!” At once the fig tree withered.
20 When the disciples saw it, they were amazed and said, “How did the fig tree wither so quickly?”
21 Jesus answered them, “Truly I tell you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but even if you tell this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ it will be done.(B) 22 And if you believe, you will receive(C) whatever you ask for in prayer.”
