Old/New Testament
Psalm 113
Praise to the Merciful God
1 Hallelujah!
Give praise, servants of Yahweh;
praise the name of Yahweh.(A)
2 Let the name of Yahweh be praised
both now and forever.(B)
3 From the rising of the sun to its setting,
let the name of Yahweh be praised.(C)
4 Yahweh is exalted above all the nations,(D)
His glory above the heavens.(E)
5 Who is like Yahweh our God—
the One enthroned on high,(F)
6 who stoops down to look
on the heavens and the earth?(G)
7 He raises the poor from the dust
and lifts the needy from the garbage pile(H)
8 in order to seat them with nobles—
with the nobles of His people.(I)
9 He gives the childless woman a household,
making her the joyful mother of children.(J)
Hallelujah!
Psalm 114
God’s Deliverance of Israel
1 When Israel came out of Egypt—
the house of Jacob from a people
who spoke a foreign language(K)—
2 Judah became His sanctuary,
Israel, His dominion.(L)
3 The sea looked and fled;(M)
the Jordan turned back.(N)
4 The mountains skipped like rams,
the hills, like lambs.(O)
5 Why was it, sea, that you fled?
Jordan, that you turned back?(P)
6 Mountains, that you skipped like rams?
Hills, like lambs?(Q)
7 Tremble, earth, at the presence of the Lord,
at the presence of the God of Jacob,(R)
8 who turned the rock into a pool of water,
the flint into a spring of water.(S)
Psalm 115
Glory to God Alone
1 Not to us, Yahweh, not to us,
but to Your name give glory
because of Your faithful love, because of Your truth.(T)
2 Why should the nations say,
“Where is their God?”(U)
3 Our God is in heaven
and does whatever He pleases.(V)
4 Their idols are silver and gold,
made by human hands.(W)
5 They have mouths but cannot speak,
eyes, but cannot see.
6 They have ears but cannot hear,
noses, but cannot smell.(X)
7 They have hands but cannot feel,
feet, but cannot walk.(Y)
They cannot make a sound with their throats.(Z)
8 Those who make them are[a] just like them,
as are all who trust in them.(AA)
9 Israel,[b] trust in the Lord!(AB)
He is their help and shield.(AC)
10 House of Aaron, trust in the Lord!(AD)
He is their help and shield.(AE)
11 You who fear the Lord, trust in the Lord!(AF)
He is their help and shield.
12 The Lord remembers us and will bless us.
He will bless the house of Israel;
He will bless the house of Aaron;(AG)
13 He will bless those who fear the Lord—
small and great alike.(AH)
14 May the Lord add to your numbers,
both yours and your children’s.(AI)
15 May you be blessed by the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.(AJ)
16 The heavens are the Lord’s,[c]
but the earth He has given to the human race.(AK)
17 It is not the dead who praise the Lord,
nor any of those descending into the silence of death.(AL)
18 But we will praise the Lord,
both now and forever.(AM)
Hallelujah!
Lawsuits among Believers
6 If any of you has a legal dispute against another, do you dare go to court(A) before the unrighteous,[a] and not before the saints? 2 Or don’t you know that the saints will judge the world? And if the world is judged by you, are you unworthy to judge the smallest cases? 3 Don’t you know that we will judge angels—not to mention ordinary matters? 4 So if you have cases pertaining to this life, do you select those[b] who have no standing(B) in the church to judge? 5 I say this to your shame!(C) Can it be that there is not one wise person among you who is able to arbitrate between his brothers?(D) 6 Instead, believer[c] goes to court against believer, and that before unbelievers!(E)
7 Therefore, to have legal disputes against one another is already a moral failure for you.(F) Why not rather put up with injustice?(G) Why not rather be cheated?(H) 8 Instead, you act unjustly and cheat—and you do this to believers! 9 Don’t you know that the unrighteous(I) will not inherit God’s kingdom?(J) Do not be deceived: No sexually immoral people, idolaters,(K) adulterers,(L) or anyone practicing homosexuality,[d](M) 10 no thieves,(N) greedy(O) people, drunkards, verbally abusive people,(P) or swindlers(Q) will inherit God’s kingdom. 11 And some of you used to be like this.(R) But you were washed, you were sanctified,(S) you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
Glorifying God in Body and Spirit
12 “Everything is permissible(T) for me,”[e] but not everything is helpful. “Everything is permissible for me,” but I will not be brought under the control of anything. 13 “Food(U) for the stomach and the stomach for food,” but God will do away with both of them.[f] The body is not for sexual immorality(V) but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. 14 God raised up the Lord and will also raise us up by His power.(W) 15 Don’t you know that your bodies are a part of Christ’s body?(X) So should I take a part of Christ’s body and make it part of a prostitute? Absolutely not! 16 Don’t you know that anyone joined to a prostitute is one body with her? For Scripture says, The two will become one flesh.(Y)[g] 17 But anyone joined(Z) to the Lord is one spirit(AA) with Him.
18 Run(AB) from sexual immorality! “Every sin a person can commit is outside the body.”[h] On the contrary, the person who is sexually immoral(AC) sins against his own body. 19 Don’t you know that your body is a sanctuary(AD) of the Holy Spirit(AE) who is in you,(AF) whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought(AG) at a price. Therefore glorify God in your body.[i]
