Old/New Testament
Separation from Yahweh
59 Behold, (A)the hand of Yahweh is not so short
That it cannot save;
(B)Nor is His ear so [a]dull
That it cannot hear.
2 But your (C)iniquities have made a separation between you and your God,
And your sins have hidden His [b]face from you so that He does (D)not hear.
3 For your (E)hands are defiled with blood
And your fingers with iniquity;
Your lips have spoken a (F)lie;
Your tongue mutters unrighteousness.
4 (G)No one calls in righteousness, and (H)no one seeks justice in truth.
They (I)trust in [c]confusion and speak worthlessness;
They (J)conceive trouble and give birth to wickedness.
5 They break open vipers’ eggs and (K)weave the spider’s web;
He who eats of their eggs dies,
And from that which is crushed a snake breaks forth.
6 Their webs will not become a garment,
Nor will they (L)cover themselves with their works;
Their (M)works are works of wickedness,
And a (N)deed of violence is in their [d]hands.
7 (O)Their feet run to evil,
And they are quick to shed innocent blood;
(P)Their thoughts are thoughts of wickedness;
Devastation and destruction are in their highways.
8 They do not know the (Q)way of peace,
And there is (R)no justice in their tracks;
They have made their paths crooked,
(S)Whoever treads on [e]them does not know peace.
Trangressing and Denying Yahweh
9 Therefore (T)justice is far from us,
And righteousness does not overtake us;
We (U)hope for light, but behold, darkness,
For brightness, but we walk in thick darkness.
10 We (V)grope along the wall like blind men;
We grope like those who have no eyes;
We (W)stumble at midday as in the twilight,
Among those who are vigorous we are (X)like dead men.
11 All of us growl like bears,
And (Y)moan sadly like doves;
We hope for (Z)justice, but there is none,
For salvation, but it is far from us.
12 For our (AA)transgressions are multiplied before You,
And our (AB)sins answer against us;
For our transgressions are with us,
And [f]we know our iniquities:
13 Transgressing and (AC)denying Yahweh,
And turning back from our God,
Speaking (AD)oppression and revolt,
Conceiving in and (AE)uttering from the heart lying words.
14 (AF)Justice is turned back,
And (AG)righteousness stands far away;
For truth has stumbled in the street,
And rightness cannot enter.
15 So it is that truth is missing;
And he who turns aside from evil (AH)makes himself plunder.
Then Yahweh saw,
And it was evil in His eyes (AI)that there was no justice.
16 And He saw that there was (AJ)no man,
And was astonished that there was no one to intercede;
Then His (AK)own arm brought salvation to Him,
And His righteousness upheld Him.
17 He put on (AL)righteousness like a breastplate,
And a (AM)helmet of salvation on His head;
And He put on (AN)garments of vengeance for clothing
And wrapped Himself with (AO)zeal as a mantle.
18 (AP)According to [g]what they deserve, [h]so He will pay in full,
Wrath to His adversaries, [i]what is deserved to His enemies;
To the coastlands He will [j]pay what they deserve.
19 So they will fear the name of Yahweh from the (AQ)west
And His glory from the (AR)rising of the sun,
For He will (AS)come like a [k]rushing stream
Which the wind of Yahweh makes flee.
20 “A (AT)Redeemer will come to Zion,
And to those who (AU)turn from transgression in Jacob,” declares Yahweh.
21 “As for Me, this is My (AV)covenant with them,” says Yahweh: “My (AW)Spirit which is upon you, and My (AX)words which I have put in your mouth, shall not depart from your mouth, nor from the mouth of your seed, nor from the mouth of your seed’s seed,” says Yahweh, “from now and forever.”
A Glorified Zion
60 “(AY)Arise, shine, for your (AZ)light has come,
And the (BA)glory of Yahweh has risen upon you.
2 For behold, (BB)darkness will cover the earth
And dense gloom the peoples;
But Yahweh will rise upon you,
And His (BC)glory will appear upon you.
3 (BD)Nations will come to your light,
And kings to the brightness of your rising.
4 “(BE)Lift up your eyes round about and see;
They all gather together; they (BF)come to you.
Your sons will come from afar,
And your (BG)daughters will be [l]carried on the nurses’ hip.
5 Then you will see and be (BH)radiant,
And your heart will tremble and be large with joy;
Because the (BI)abundance of the sea will be turned to you,
The (BJ)wealth of the nations will come to you.
6 A multitude of camels will cover you,
The young camels of Midian and (BK)Ephah;
All those from (BL)Sheba will come;
They will bring (BM)gold and frankincense,
And will (BN)bear good news of the praises of Yahweh.
7 All the flocks of (BO)Kedar will be gathered together to you;
The rams of Nebaioth will minister to you;
They will go up with acceptance on My (BP)altar,
And I shall [m](BQ)adorn My [n]glorious house with beautiful glory.
8 (BR)Who are these who fly like a cloud
And like the doves to their [o]lattices?
9 Surely the (BS)coastlands will hope in Me;
And the (BT)ships of Tarshish will come first,
To (BU)bring your sons from afar,
Their silver and their gold with them,
For the name of Yahweh your God,
And for the Holy One of Israel because He has [p](BV)adorned you with beautiful glory.
10 “(BW)Foreigners will build up your walls,
And their (BX)kings will minister to you;
For in My (BY)wrath I struck you,
And in My favor I have had compassion on you.
11 Your (BZ)gates will be open continually;
They will not be closed day or night,
So that men may (CA)bring to you the wealth of the nations,
With (CB)their kings led in procession.
12 For the (CC)nation and the kingdom which will not serve you will perish,
And the nations will surely be laid waste.
13 The (CD)glory of Lebanon will come to you,
The (CE)juniper, the box tree, and the cypress together,
To adorn the place of My sanctuary with beautiful glory;
And I shall make the (CF)place of My feet glorious.
14 The (CG)sons of those who afflicted you will come bowing to you,
And all those who spurned you will bow themselves at the soles of your feet;
And they will call you the (CH)City of Yahweh,
The (CI)Zion of the Holy One of Israel.
15 “Instead of being (CJ)forsaken and (CK)hated
With no one passing through,
I will make you an everlasting (CL)pride,
A joy from generation to generation.
16 You will also (CM)suck the milk of nations
And suck the breast of kings;
Then you will know that I, Yahweh, am your (CN)Savior
And your (CO)Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.
17 Instead of bronze I will bring gold,
And instead of iron I will bring silver,
And instead of wood, bronze,
And instead of stones, iron.
And I will make peace your overseers
And righteousness your taskmasters.
18 (CP)Violence will not be heard again in your land,
Nor (CQ)devastation or destruction within your borders;
But you will call your (CR)walls salvation, and your (CS)gates praise.
19 No longer will you have the (CT)sun for light by day,
Nor for brightness will the moon give you light;
But you will have (CU)Yahweh for an everlasting light,
And your (CV)God for your [q]glory.
20 Your (CW)sun will no longer set,
Nor will your moon wane;
For you will have Yahweh for an everlasting light,
And the days of your (CX)mourning will be finished.
21 Then all your (CY)people will be righteous;
They will (CZ)possess the land forever,
The branch of [r]My planting,
The (DA)work of My hands,
That I may show forth My (DB)beautiful glory.
22 The (DC)smallest one will become a [s]clan,
And the miniscule one a mighty nation.
I, Yahweh, will hasten it in its time.”
Exaltation of the Afflicted
61 The (DD)Spirit of Lord Yahweh is upon me
Because Yahweh has anointed me
To (DE)bring good news to the [t](DF)afflicted;
He has sent me to (DG)bind up the brokenhearted,
To (DH)proclaim release to captives
And [u]freedom to prisoners,
2 To (DI)proclaim the favorable year of Yahweh
And the (DJ)day of vengeance of our God,
To (DK)comfort all who mourn,
3 To (DL)grant those who mourn in Zion,
Giving them a headdress instead of ashes,
The (DM)oil of rejoicing instead of mourning,
The mantle of praise instead of a spirit of fainting.
So they will be called [v](DN)oaks of righteousness,
The planting of Yahweh, that He may show forth His beautiful glory.
4 Then they will (DO)rebuild the ancient waste places;
They will raise up the former desolations;
And they will make new the ruined cities,
The desolations from generation to generation.
5 (DP)Strangers will stand and pasture your flocks,
And [w]foreigners will be your farmers and your vinedressers.
6 But you will be called the (DQ)priests of Yahweh;
You will be spoken of as (DR)ministers of our God.
You will eat the (DS)wealth of nations,
And in their glories you will boast.
7 Instead of your (DT)shame you will have a (DU)double portion,
And instead of dishonor they will shout for joy over their portion.
Therefore they will possess a double portion in their land;
(DV)Everlasting gladness will be theirs.
8 For I, Yahweh, (DW)love justice,
I hate robbery [x]in the burnt offering;
And in truth I will give them their recompense
And cut an (DX)everlasting covenant with them.
9 Then their seed will be known among the nations,
And their offspring in the midst of the peoples.
All who see them will recognize them
Because they are the (DY)seed whom Yahweh has blessed.
10 I will (DZ)rejoice greatly in Yahweh;
My soul will rejoice in (EA)my God,
For He has (EB)clothed me with garments of salvation,
He has wrapped me with a robe of righteousness,
As a bridegroom decks himself with a headdress,
And (EC)as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.
11 For as the (ED)earth brings forth its branches,
And as a garden causes the things sown in it to branch out,
So Lord Yahweh will (EE)cause (EF)righteousness and praise
To branch out before all the nations.
Disobedient Brothers
3 (A)Finally, brothers, (B)pray for us that (C)the word of the Lord will [a]spread rapidly and be glorified, just as it did also with you; 2 and that we will be (D)rescued from [b]perverse and evil men, for not all have [c]faith. 3 But (E)the Lord is faithful, who will strengthen and guard you [d]from (F)the evil one. 4 And we have (G)confidence in the Lord about you, that you (H)are doing and will continue to do what we command. 5 And may the Lord (I)direct your hearts into the love of God and into the steadfastness of Christ.
6 Now we command you, brothers, (J)in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you [e](K)keep away from every brother who walks in an [f](L)unruly manner and not according to (M)the tradition which [g]they received from us. 7 For you yourselves know how you ought to (N)imitate us, because we did not act in an unruly manner among you, 8 nor did we (O)eat [h]anyone’s bread [i]without paying for it, but with (P)labor and hardship we kept (Q)working night and day so that we would not be a burden to any of you; 9 not because we do not have (R)the authority, but in order to offer ourselves (S)as a model for you, so that you would imitate us. 10 For even (T)when we were with you, we used to command this to you: (U)if anyone is not willing to work, neither let him eat. 11 For we hear that some among you are (V)walking in an unruly manner, doing no work at all, but acting like (W)busybodies. 12 Now such persons we command and (X)exhort in the Lord Jesus Christ, that (Y)working with quietness, they eat their own bread. 13 But as for you, (Z)brothers, (AA)do not lose heart in doing good.
14 And if anyone does not obey our word [j](AB)in this letter, take special note of that person (AC)to not associate with him, so that he will be (AD)put to shame. 15 And yet (AE)do not regard him as an enemy, but [k](AF)admonish him as a (AG)brother.
16 Now (AH)may the Lord of peace (AI)Himself continually give you peace in every [l]circumstance. (AJ)The Lord be with you all!
17 The greeting (AK)is in my own hand—[m]Paul, which is a distinguishing mark in every letter; this is the way I write. 18 (AL)The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.
