Old/New Testament
How Long, O Yahweh?
A Psalm of Asaph.
79 O God, the (A)nations have come into (B)Your inheritance;
They have defiled Your (C)holy temple;
They have (D)laid Jerusalem in ruins.
2 They have given the (E)dead bodies of Your slaves for food to the birds of the heavens,
The flesh of Your holy ones to the beasts of the earth.
3 They have poured out their blood like water round about Jerusalem;
And there was (F)no one to bury them.
4 We have become a (G)reproach to our neighbors,
A mockery and derision to those around us.
5 (H)How long, O Yahweh? Will You be angry forever?
Will Your (I)jealousy (J)burn like fire?
6 (K)Pour out Your wrath upon the nations which (L)do not know You,
And upon the kingdoms which (M)do not call upon Your name.
7 For they have (N)devoured Jacob
And (O)laid waste his [a]abode.
8 (P)Do not remember our former iniquities against us;
Let Your compassion quickly (Q)approach us,
For we are (R)brought very low.
9 (S)Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of (T)Your name;
And deliver us and (U)atone for our sins (V)for Your name’s sake.
10 (W)Why should the nations say, “Where is their God?”
Let it be known among the nations before our eyes:
(X)Vengeance for the blood of Your slaves which has been poured out.
11 Let (Y)the groaning of the prisoner come before You;
According to the greatness of Your [b]power preserve [c]those who are (Z)doomed to die.
12 And return to our neighbors (AA)sevenfold (AB)into their bosom
[d]The (AC)reproach with which they have reproached You, O Lord.
13 But as for us, as Your people and the (AD)sheep of Your pasture,
We will (AE)give thanks to You forever;
From generation to generation we will (AF)recount Your praise.
O God, Restore Us
For the choir director. [e]El Shoshannim. [f]Eduth. Of Asaph. A Psalm.
80 O (AG)Shepherd of Israel, give ear,
You who guide (AH)Joseph like a flock;
You who (AI)are enthroned above the cherubim, shine forth!
2 Before (AJ)Ephraim and Benjamin and Manasseh, (AK)stir up Your might
And come to save us!
3 O God, (AL)restore us
And (AM)cause Your face to shine upon us, that we would be saved.
4 O (AN)Yahweh God of hosts,
(AO)How long will You [g]smolder against the prayer of Your people?
5 You have fed them with the (AP)bread of tears,
And You have made them to drink tears in [h]large measure.
6 You set us as [i]an object of strife (AQ)to our neighbors,
And our enemies mock us among themselves.
7 O God of hosts, restore us
And cause Your face to shine upon us, that we might be saved.
8 You removed a (AR)vine from Egypt;
You (AS)drove out the [j]nations and then You (AT)planted it.
9 You (AU)cleared the ground before it,
And it (AV)took deep root and filled the land.
10 The mountains were covered with its shadow,
And [k]the cedars of God with its (AW)boughs.
11 It sent out its branches (AX)to the sea
And its shoots to the River.
12 Why have You (AY)broken down its [l]hedges,
So that all who pass that way pick its fruit?
13 A boar from the forest (AZ)devours it
And whatever moves in the field feeds on it.
14 O God of hosts, (BA)return now, we beseech You;
(BB)Look down from heaven and see, and visit this vine,
15 Even the [m](BC)sapling which Your right hand has planted,
And on the [n]son whom You have [o]strengthened for Yourself.
16 It is (BD)burned with fire, it is cut down;
They perish at the (BE)rebuke of Your face.
17 Let (BF)Your hand be upon the man of Your right hand,
Upon the son of man whom You (BG)made strong for Yourself.
18 Then we shall not (BH)turn back from You;
(BI)Revive us, and we will call upon Your name.
19 O Yahweh God of hosts, (BJ)restore us;
Cause Your face to shine upon us, that we might be saved.
God Has Not Rejected Israel
11 I say then, has God (A)rejected His people? (B)May it never be! For (C)I too am an Israelite, a seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin. 2 [a](D)God has not rejected His people whom He (E)foreknew. (F)Or do you not know what the Scripture says in the passage about Elijah, how he appeals to God against Israel? 3 “Lord, (G)they have killed Your prophets, they have torn down Your altars, and I alone am left, and they are seeking my life.” 4 But what does the divine response say to him? “(H)I have left for Myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal.” 5 In this way then, at the present time, (I)a remnant according to God’s [b]gracious choice has also come to be. 6 But (J)if it is by grace, it is no longer of works, otherwise grace is no longer grace.
7 What then? What (K)Israel is seeking, it has not obtained, but the chosen obtained it, and the rest were (L)hardened; 8 just as it is written,
“[c](M)God gave them a spirit of stupor,
Eyes to see not and ears to hear not,
Down to this very day.”
9 And David says,
“(N)Let their table become a snare and a trap,
And a stumbling block and a retribution to them.
10 (O)Let their eyes be darkened to see not,
And bend their backs forever.”
Gentiles Grafted In
11 (P)I say then, did they stumble so as to fall? (Q)May it never be! But by their transgression (R)salvation has come to the Gentiles, to (S)make them jealous. 12 Now if their transgression is riches for the world and their failure is riches for the Gentiles, how much more will their [d](T)fullness be! 13 But I am speaking to you who are Gentiles. Inasmuch then as (U)I am an apostle of Gentiles, I magnify my ministry, 14 if somehow I might (V)move to jealousy (W)my [e]fellow countrymen and (X)save some of them. 15 For if their rejection is the (Y)reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance be but (Z)life from the dead? 16 And if the (AA)first piece of dough is holy, the lump is also; and if the root is holy, the branches are too.
17 But if some of the (AB)branches were broken off, and (AC)you, being a wild olive, were grafted in among them and became a partaker with them of the [f]rich root of the olive tree, 18 do not boast against the branches. But if you do boast against them, remember that (AD)it is not you who supports the root, but the root supports you.
