David Escapes to the Philistines
27 Then David said in his heart, “Now I will be swept away one day by the hand of Saul. (A)There is nothing better for me than that I should utterly escape into the land of the Philistines. Saul then will despair of searching for me anymore in all the territory of Israel, and I will escape from his hand.” 2 So David arose and crossed over, he and (B)the six hundred men who were with him, to (C)Achish the son of Maoch, king of Gath. 3 And David lived with Achish at Gath, he and his men, (D)each with his household, even David with (E)his two wives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the Carmelitess, Nabal’s wife. 4 And it was told to Saul that David had fled to Gath, so he no longer searched for him.
5 Then David said to Achish, “If now I have found favor in your sight, let them give me a place in one of the cities in the country, that I may live there; for why should your servant live in the royal city with you?” 6 So Achish gave him Ziklag that day; therefore (F)Ziklag has belonged to the kings of Judah to this day. 7 And the number of days that David lived in the country of the Philistines was (G)a year and four months.
8 Now David and his men went up and raided (H)the Geshurites and the Girzites and (I)the Amalekites; for they were the inhabitants of the land from ancient times, as you come to (J)Shur even as far as the land of Egypt. 9 And David struck the land and did not leave a man or a woman alive, and he (K)took away the sheep, the cattle, the donkeys, the camels, and the clothing. Then he returned and came to Achish. 10 And Achish said, “Where have you (L)made a raid today?” And David said, “Against the [a]Negev of Judah and against the [b]Negev of (M)the Jerahmeelites and against the [c]Negev of (N)the Kenites.” 11 And David did not leave a man or a woman alive to bring to Gath, saying, “Lest they tell about us, saying, ‘So has David done and so has been his custom all the time he has lived in the country of the Philistines.’” 12 So Achish believed David, saying, “He has surely made himself odious among his people Israel; therefore he will become my servant forever.”
Saul and the Woman of En-dor
28 Now it happened in those days that (O)the Philistines gathered their armed camps for war, to fight against Israel. And Achish said to David, “Know assuredly that you will go out with me in the camp, you and your men.” 2 And David said to Achish, “Very well, you shall know what your servant can do.” So Achish said to David, “Very well, I will make you [d]my bodyguard (P)for life.”
3 Now (Q)Samuel was dead, and all Israel had lamented for him and buried him (R)in Ramah, his own city. And Saul had removed from the land those who (S)were mediums and spiritists. 4 So the Philistines gathered together and came and camped (T)in Shunem; and Saul gathered all Israel together, and they camped in (U)Gilboa. 5 Saul saw the camp of the Philistines and was afraid and his heart trembled greatly. 6 (V)So Saul asked of Yahweh, but (W)Yahweh did not answer him, either by (X)dreams or by (Y)Urim or by prophets. 7 So Saul said to his servants, “Seek for me a woman who is a medium, that I may go to her and inquire of her.” And his servants said to him, “Behold, (Z)there is a woman who is a medium at (AA)En-dor.”
8 Then Saul (AB)disguised himself and put on other clothes, and he went, he and two men with him, and they came to the woman by night; and he said, “(AC)Divine for me, please, and (AD)bring up for me whom I shall say to you.” 9 But the woman said to him, “Behold, you know (AE)what Saul has done, how he has cut off those who are mediums and spiritists from the land. Why are you then laying a snare for my life to bring about my death?” 10 Then Saul swore to her by Yahweh, saying, “As Yahweh lives, no punishment shall come upon you for this thing.” 11 Then the woman said, “Whom shall I bring up for you?” And he said, “Bring up Samuel for me.” 12 And the woman saw Samuel and cried out with a loud voice; and the woman spoke to Saul, saying, “Why have you deceived me? For you are Saul.” 13 And the king said to her, “Do not be afraid; but what do you see?” And the woman said to Saul, “I see a [e]divine being coming up out of the earth.” 14 And he said to her, “What is his form?” And she said, “An old man is coming up, and (AF)he is wrapped with a robe.” And Saul knew that it was Samuel, and (AG)he bowed with his [f]face to the ground and prostrated himself.
15 Then Samuel said to Saul, “Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?” And Saul answered, “I am greatly distressed, for the Philistines are waging war against me, and (AH)God has turned away from me and (AI)no longer answers me, either by the hand of the prophets or by dreams; therefore I have called you, that you may make known to me what I should do.” 16 And Samuel said, “Why then do you ask me, since Yahweh has turned away from you and has become your adversary? 17 So Yahweh has done [g]accordingly (AJ)as He spoke by my hand, for Yahweh has torn the kingdom out of your hand and given it to your neighbor, to David. 18 As (AK)you did not listen to the voice of Yahweh and did not execute His burning anger on Amalek, so Yahweh has done this thing to you this day. 19 Moreover Yahweh will also give over Israel along with you into the hands of the Philistines, therefore tomorrow (AL)you and your sons will be with me. Indeed Yahweh will give over the camp of Israel into the hands of the Philistines!”
20 Then Saul quickly fell full length upon the ground and was very afraid because of the words of Samuel; also there was no strength in him, for he had eaten no [h]food all day and all night. 21 And the woman came to Saul and saw that he was terrified and said to him, “Behold, your servant-woman has listened to your voice, and (AM)I have [i]taken my life in my hand and have listened to your words which you spoke to me. 22 So now also, please listen to the voice of your servant-woman, and let me set a piece of bread before you that you may eat and have strength when you go on your way.” 23 But he refused and said, “(AN)I will not eat.” (AO)However, his servants together with the woman urged him, and he listened to [j]them. So he arose from the ground and sat on (AP)the bed. 24 And the woman had a (AQ)fattened calf in the house, and she quickly sacrificed it; and she (AR)took flour, kneaded it, and baked unleavened bread from it. 25 And she brought it before Saul and his servants, and they ate. Then they arose and went away that night.
Achish Makes David Leave the Battle
29 Then (AS)the Philistines gathered together all their camps to (AT)Aphek, while the Israelites were camping by the spring which is in (AU)Jezreel. 2 And the lords of the Philistines were proceeding on by hundreds and by thousands, and (AV)David and his men were proceeding on in the rear with Achish. 3 Then the commanders of the Philistines said, “What are these Hebrews doing here?” And Achish said to the commanders of the Philistines, “Is this not David, the servant of Saul the king of Israel, (AW)who has been with me these days, or rather these years, and (AX)I have found no fault in him from the day he [k]deserted to me to this day?” 4 But the commanders of the Philistines were angry with him, and the commanders of the Philistines said to him, “Make the man return, that he may return (AY)to his place where you have assigned him, and do not let him go down to battle with us, (AZ)or in the battle he may become an adversary to us. For with what could this man make himself acceptable to his lord? Would it not be with the heads of [l]these men? 5 Is this not David, (BA)of whom they sing in the dances, saying,
‘Saul has struck his thousands,
And David his ten thousands’?”
6 Then Achish called David and said to him, “As Yahweh lives, you have been upright, and (BB)your going out and your coming in with me in the camp are pleasing in my sight; (BC)for I have not found evil in you from the day of your coming to me to this day. Nevertheless, you are not pleasing in the sight of the lords. 7 So now, return and go in peace, that you may not do evil in the sight of the lords of the Philistines.” 8 And David said to Achish, “(BD)But what have I done? And what have you found in your servant from the day when I came before you to this day, that I may not go and fight against the enemies of my lord the king?” 9 But Achish answered and said to David, “I know that you are pleasing in my sight, (BE)like an angel of God; nevertheless (BF)the commanders of the Philistines have said, ‘He must not go up with us to the battle.’ 10 So now, arise early in the morning (BG)with the servants of your lord who have come with you, and as soon as you have arisen early in the morning and have light, go.” 11 So David arose early, he and his men, to go in the morning to return to the land of the Philistines. And the Philistines went up to Jezreel.
Repent or Perish
13 Now at that same time there were some present who were reporting to Him about the Galileans whose blood (A)Pilate had [a]mixed with their sacrifices. 2 And Jesus answered and said to them, “(B)Do you think that these Galileans were greater sinners than all other Galileans because they suffered these things? 3 I tell you, no, but unless you [b]repent, you will all likewise perish. 4 Or do you think that those eighteen on whom the tower in (C)Siloam fell and killed them were worse [c](D)offenders than all the men who live in Jerusalem? 5 I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.”
The Parable of the Barren Fig Tree
6 And He was telling this parable: “A man had (E)a fig tree which had been planted in his vineyard; and he came seeking fruit on it and did not find any. 7 And he said to the vineyard-keeper, ‘Behold, for three years I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree [d]without finding any. (F)Cut it down! Why does it even use up the ground?’ 8 And he answered and said to him, ‘Let it alone, sir, for this year too, until I dig around it and put in manure, 9 and if it bears fruit next year, fine, but if not, cut it down.’”
A Woman Healed on the Sabbath
10 And He was (G)teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. 11 And behold, there was a woman who for eighteen years had [e](H)a sickness caused by a spirit, and she was bent double, and could not straighten up at all. 12 But when Jesus saw her, He called her over and said to her, “Woman, you are freed from your sickness.” 13 And He (I)laid His hands on her, and immediately she was made erect again and began (J)glorifying God. 14 But (K)the synagogue official, indignant because Jesus (L)healed on the Sabbath, answered and was saying to the crowd, “(M)There are six days in which work should be done; so come during them and get healed, and not on the Sabbath day.” 15 But (N)the Lord answered him and said, “You hypocrites, (O)does not each of you on the Sabbath release his ox or his donkey from the stall and lead it away to water it? 16 And this woman, (P)being a daughter of Abraham, whom (Q)Satan has bound for—behold—eighteen years, should she not have been released from this bond on the Sabbath day?” 17 And as He said this, all His opponents were being put to shame; and (R)the entire crowd was rejoicing over all the glorious things being done by Him.
The Parables of the Mustard Seed and the Leaven
18 Therefore, (S)He was saying, “(T)What is the kingdom of God like, and to what shall I compare it? 19 It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and threw into his own garden, and it grew and became a tree, and (U)the birds of the [f]air nested in its branches.”
20 And again He said, “(V)To what shall I compare the kingdom of God? 21 (W)It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in [g](X)three sata of flour until it was all leavened.”
The Narrow Door
22 And He was passing through from one city and village to another, teaching, and (Y)proceeding on His way to Jerusalem.
