Joshua 6:6-27

So Joshua the son of Nun called the priests and said to them, “Carry the ark of the covenant, and let seven priests carry seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark of Yahweh.” Then [a]he said to the people, “Go forward, and march around the city, and let the armed men go on before the ark of Yahweh.” And so it happened that, when Joshua had spoken to the people, the seven priests carrying the seven trumpets of rams’ horns before Yahweh passed on forward and blew the trumpets; and the ark of the covenant of Yahweh came after them. And the armed men went before the priests who blew the trumpets, and (A)the rear guard came after the ark, while they continued to blow the trumpets. 10 But Joshua commanded the people, saying, “You shall not shout nor let your voice be heard nor let a word proceed out of your mouth, until the day I tell you, ‘Shout!’ Then you shall shout!” 11 So he had the ark of Yahweh [b]taken around the city, circling it once; then they came into the camp and spent the night in the camp.

12 Then Joshua rose early in the morning, and the priests carried the ark of Yahweh. 13 (B)And the seven priests carrying the seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark of Yahweh went on continually and blew the trumpets; and the armed men went before them, and (C)the rear guard came after the ark of Yahweh, and they continued to blow the trumpets. 14 Thus the second day they marched around the city once and returned to the camp; they did so for six days.

15 Then it happened that on the seventh day they rose early at the [c]breaking of dawn and marched around the city in the same manner seven times; only on that day they marched around the city seven times. 16 Now it happened that on the seventh time, the priests blew the trumpets, and Joshua said to the people, “(D)Shout! For Yahweh has given you the city. 17 And the city shall be (E)devoted to destruction, it and all that is in it belongs to Yahweh; only Rahab the harlot [d]and all who are with her in the house shall live because she hid the messengers whom we sent. 18 But as for you, only keep yourselves from the things devoted to destruction, lest as you are devoting them to destruction, you also (F)take some of the things devoted to destruction and make the camp of Israel devoted to destruction and bring trouble on it. 19 (G)But all the silver and gold and articles of bronze and iron are holy to Yahweh; they shall go into the treasury of Yahweh.” 20 So the people shouted, and [e]the priests blew the trumpets; and when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, the people shouted with a great shout, and the (H)wall fell down [f]beneath itself, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight [g]ahead, and they took the city. 21 (I)And they devoted to destruction everything in the city, both man and woman, young and old, and ox and sheep and donkey, with the edge of the sword.

22 Now to the two men who had spied out the land, Joshua said, “(J)Go into the harlot’s house and bring the woman and all she has out of there, as you have sworn to her.” 23 So the young men who were spies went in and (K)brought out Rahab and her father and her mother and her brothers and all she had; they also brought out all her relatives and placed them outside the camp of Israel. 24 (L)But they burned the city with fire, and all that was in it. Only the silver and gold, and articles of bronze and iron, they put into the treasury of the [h]house of Yahweh. 25 However, (M)Rahab the harlot and her father’s household and all she had, Joshua preserved alive; and she has lived in the midst of Israel to this day, for (N)she hid the messengers whom Joshua sent to spy out Jericho.

26 Then Joshua made them swear an oath at that time, saying, “(O)Cursed before Yahweh is the man who rises up and builds this city Jericho; with the loss of his firstborn he shall lay its foundation, and with the loss of his youngest son he shall set up its gates.” 27 So (P)Yahweh was with Joshua, and the (Q)report about him was in all the land.

Psalm 135-136

O Yahweh, Your Name Is Everlasting

135 [a](A)Praise Yah!
Praise the name of Yahweh;
Praise Him, O (B)slaves of Yahweh,
You who stand in the house of Yahweh,
In the (C)courts of the house of our God!
[b]Praise Yah, for (D)Yahweh is good;
(E)Sing praises to His name, (F)for it is lovely.
For Yah has (G)chosen Jacob for Himself,
Israel for His [c](H)treasured possession.

For I know that (I)Yahweh is great
And that our Lord is greater (J)than all gods.
(K)Whatever Yahweh pleases, He does,
In heaven and on earth, in the seas and in all deeps.
The One who (L)causes the clouds to ascend from the end of the earth;
Who (M)makes lightnings for the rain,
Who (N)brings forth the wind from His storehouses.

[d]He (O)struck the firstborn of Egypt,
From man to beast.
[e]He sent (P)signs and wonders into your midst, O Egypt,
Amongst (Q)Pharaoh and all his slaves.
10 [f](R)He (S)struck many nations
And slew mighty kings,
11 (T)Sihon, king of the Amorites,
And (U)Og, king of Bashan,
And (V)all the kingdoms of Canaan;
12 And He (W)gave their land as an inheritance,
An inheritance to Israel His people.
13 O Yahweh, Your (X)name is everlasting,
O Yahweh, Your [g]remembrance is [h]from generation to generation.
14 For Yahweh will (Y)render justice for His people
And (Z)will give comfort to His slaves.
15 The (AA)idols of the nations are silver and gold,
The work of man’s hands.
16 They have mouths, but they do not speak;
They have eyes, but they do not see;
17 They have ears, but they do not hear,
Surely, there is not any breath in their mouths.
18 Those who make them will be like them,
All who trust in them.

19 O house of (AB)Israel, bless Yahweh;
O house of Aaron, bless Yahweh;
20 O house of Levi, bless Yahweh;
You (AC)who fear Yahweh, bless Yahweh.
21 Blessed be Yahweh (AD)from Zion,
Who (AE)dwells in Jerusalem.
[i]Praise Yah!

His Lovingkindness Endures Forever

136 (AF)Give thanks to Yahweh, for (AG)He is good,
For (AH)His lovingkindness endures forever.
Give thanks to the (AI)God of gods,
For His lovingkindness endures forever.
Give thanks to the (AJ)Lord of lords,
For His lovingkindness endures forever.

To Him who (AK)alone does great [j]wonders,
For His lovingkindness endures forever;
To Him who (AL)made the heavens (AM)with [k]skill,
For His lovingkindness endures forever;
To Him who (AN)spread out the earth above the waters,
For His lovingkindness endures forever;
To Him who (AO)made the great lights,
For His lovingkindness endures forever:
The (AP)sun to rule [l]by day,
For His lovingkindness endures forever,
The (AQ)moon and stars to rule [m]by night,
For His lovingkindness endures forever.

10 To Him who (AR)struck [n]the Egyptians through their firstborn,
For His lovingkindness endures forever,
11 Then (AS)brought Israel out from their midst,
For His lovingkindness endures forever,
12 With a (AT)strong hand and an (AU)outstretched arm,
For His lovingkindness endures forever.

13 To Him who (AV)divided the [o]Red Sea in two,
For His lovingkindness endures forever,
14 And (AW)made Israel pass through the midst of it,
For His lovingkindness endures forever,
15 But (AX)He [p]overthrew Pharaoh and his army in the [q]Red Sea,
For His lovingkindness endures forever.

16 To Him who (AY)led His people through the wilderness,
For His lovingkindness endures forever;

17 To Him who (AZ)struck great kings,
For His lovingkindness endures forever,
18 And (BA)killed [r]mighty kings,
For His lovingkindness endures forever:
19 (BB)Sihon, king of the Amorites,
For His lovingkindness endures forever,
20 And (BC)Og, king of Bashan,
For His lovingkindness endures forever,
21 And (BD)gave their land as an inheritance,
For His lovingkindness endures forever,
22 Even an inheritance to Israel His (BE)servant,
For His lovingkindness endures forever.

23 Who (BF)remembered us in our low estate,
For His lovingkindness endures forever,
24 And has (BG)snatched us from our adversaries,
For His lovingkindness endures forever;
25 Who (BH)gives food to all flesh,
For His lovingkindness endures forever.
26 Give thanks to the (BI)God of heaven,
For His lovingkindness endures forever.

Isaiah 66

Heaven Is Yahweh’s Throne

66 Thus says Yahweh,

(A)Heaven is My throne, and the earth is the footstool of My feet.
Where then is a (B)house you could build for Me?
And where is a place that [a]I may rest?
For (C)My hand made all these things,
Thus all these things came into being,” declares Yahweh.
“But to this one I will look,
To him who is humble and (D)contrite of spirit, and who (E)trembles at My word.

But he who slaughters an ox is the one who strikes down a man;
He who sacrifices a lamb is the one who breaks a dog’s neck;
He who offers a grain offering is the one who offers (F)swine’s blood;
He who (G)offers a memorial offering of frankincense is the one who blesses wickedness.
As they have chosen their (H)own ways,
And their soul takes pleasure in their (I)detestable things,
So I will (J)choose their [b]punishments
And will (K)bring on them what they dread,
Because I called, but (L)no one answered;
I spoke, but they did not listen.
And they did what was (M)evil in My eyes
And chose that in which I did not take pleasure.”
Hear the word of Yahweh, you who (N)tremble at His word:
“Your brothers who (O)hate you, who (P)exclude you for My name’s sake,
Have said, ‘Let Yahweh be glorified, that we may see your gladness.’
But (Q)they will be put to shame.
A voice of rumbling from the city, a voice from the temple,
The voice of Yahweh who is (R)paying recompense to His enemies.

“Before she was in labor pains, (S)she gave birth;
Before her pangs came, (T)she delivered a male child.
(U)Who has heard such a thing? Who has seen such things?
Can a land be [c]brought forth through labor pains in one day?
Can a nation be born all at once?
As soon as Zion was in labor pains, she also gave birth to her sons.
Shall I bring to the point of breaking forth and (V)not cause birth?” says Yahweh.
“Or shall I who causes birth shut the womb?” says your God.

Joy in Jerusalem’s Future

10 “Be (W)glad with Jerusalem and rejoice for her, all you who (X)love her;
Be exceedingly (Y)joyful with her, all you who mourn over her,
11 That you may nurse and (Z)be satisfied with her comforting breasts,
That you may suck and be delighted with her (AA)bountiful bosom.”
12 For thus says Yahweh, “Behold, I stretch out (AB)peace to her like a river,
And the (AC)glory of the nations like an overflowing stream;
And you will [d]be nursed; you will be (AD)carried on the [e]hip and played with on the knees.
13 As one whom his mother comforts, so I will (AE)comfort you;
And you will be comforted in Jerusalem.”
14 Then you will (AF)see this, and your (AG)heart will be joyful,
And your (AH)bones will flourish like the new grass;
And the (AI)hand of Yahweh will be made known to His slaves,
But He will be (AJ)indignant toward His enemies.
15 For behold, Yahweh will come in (AK)fire
And His (AL)chariots like the whirlwind,
To return His anger with wrath,
And His rebuke with flames of fire.
16 For Yahweh will execute judgment by (AM)fire
And by His (AN)sword on all flesh,
And those slain by Yahweh will be many.
17 “Those who sanctify and purify themselves to go to the (AO)gardens,
[f]Following one in the center,
Who eat (AP)swine’s flesh, detestable things, and mice,
Will (AQ)come to an end altogether,” declares Yahweh.

18 “And I [g]know their works and their (AR)thoughts; [h]the time is coming to (AS)gather all nations and tongues. And they shall come and see My glory. 19 I will set a (AT)sign among them and will send those who have escaped from them to the nations: (AU)Tarshish, [i]Put, (AV)Lud, [j]Meshech, (AW)Tubal, and [k]Javan, to the distant (AX)coastlands that have neither heard My report nor seen My glory. And they will (AY)declare My glory among the nations. 20 Then they shall (AZ)bring all your brothers from all the nations as a grain offering to Yahweh, on horses, in chariots, in litters, on mules, and on camels, to My (BA)holy mountain Jerusalem,” says Yahweh, “just as the sons of Israel bring their grain offering in a (BB)clean vessel to the house of Yahweh. 21 I will also take some of them for (BC)priests and for Levites,” says Yahweh.

22 “For just as the (BD)new heavens and the new earth
Which I make will endure before Me,” declares Yahweh,
“So your (BE)seed and your (BF)name will endure.
23 And it shall be from (BG)new moon to new moon
And from sabbath to sabbath,
All [l]mankind will come to (BH)worship before Me,” says Yahweh.
24 “Then they will go forth and look
On the (BI)corpses of the men
Who have [m](BJ)transgressed against Me.
For their (BK)worm will not die
(BL)And their fire will not be quenched;
And they will be an object of (BM)contempt to all [n]mankind.”

Matthew 14

John the Baptist Beheaded

14 (A)At that [a]time (B)Herod the tetrarch heard the news about Jesus, and said to his servants, “(C)This is John the Baptist; [b]he has risen from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him.”

For when (D)Herod had John arrested, he bound him and put him (E)in prison because of (F)Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip. For John had been saying to him, “(G)It is not lawful for you to have her.” And although Herod wanted to put him to death, he feared the crowd, because they were regarding [c]John as (H)a prophet.

But when Herod’s birthday came, the daughter of (I)Herodias danced [d]before them and pleased (J)Herod, so much that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked. Now having been prompted by her mother, she *said, “Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.” And although he was grieved, the king commanded it to be given because of his oaths, and because of [e]his dinner guests. 10 And he sent and had John beheaded in the prison. 11 And his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother. 12 And his disciples came and took away the body and buried [f]it; and they went and reported to Jesus.

Jesus Feeds Five Thousand

13 (K)Now when Jesus heard about John, He withdrew from there in a boat to a desolate place by Himself; and when the crowds heard of this, they followed Him on foot from the cities. 14 And when He went [g]ashore, He (L)saw a large crowd, and felt compassion for them and (M)healed their sick.

15 Now when it was evening, the disciples came to Him and said, “This place is desolate and the hour is already [h]late; so send the crowds away, that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves.” 16 But Jesus said to them, “They do not need to go away; you give them something to eat!” 17 But they *said to Him, “We have here only (N)five loaves and two fish.” 18 And He said, “Bring them here to Me.” 19 And ordering the crowds to [i]sit down on the grass, He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up toward heaven, He (O)blessed the food. And breaking the loaves, He gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds, 20 and they all ate and were satisfied. They picked up what was left over of the broken pieces, twelve full (P)baskets. 21 And there were about five thousand men who ate, besides women and children.

Jesus Walks on the Sea

22 (Q)Immediately He [j]made the disciples get into the boat and go ahead of Him to the other side, while He sent the crowds away. 23 And after He had sent the crowds away, (R)He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray; and when it was evening, He was there alone. 24 But the boat was already many [k]stadia away from the land, [l]being battered by the waves; for the wind was [m](S)against them. 25 And in (T)the [n]fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea. 26 Now when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is (U)a ghost!” And they cried out [o]in fear. 27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, (V)Take courage, [p]it is I; (W)do not be afraid.”

28 And Peter answered and said to Him, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.” 29 And He said, “Come!” And getting out of the boat, Peter walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But seeing the wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!” 31 And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and took hold of him, and *said to him, (X)You of little faith, why did you doubt?” 32 And when they got into the boat, the wind stopped. 33 And those who were in the boat worshiped Him, saying, “You are truly (Y)God’s Son!”

34 (Z)And when they had crossed over, they came to land at (AA)Gennesaret. 35 And when the men of that place [q]recognized Him, they sent word into all that surrounding district and brought to Him all who were sick; 36 and they were pleading with Him that they might just touch (AB)the fringe of His garment; and as many as (AC)touched it were cured.
