The Ark of God Inhabits a Tent
7 (A)Now it happened when the king inhabited his house, and Yahweh had given him rest on every side from all his enemies, 2 that the king said to (B)Nathan the prophet, “See now, I inhabit (C)a house of cedar, but the ark of God (D)inhabits tent curtains.” 3 So Nathan said to the king, “(E)Go, do all that is in your heart, for Yahweh is with you.”
4 Now it happened in the same night, that the word of Yahweh came to Nathan, saying, 5 “Go and say to My servant David, ‘Thus says Yahweh, “(F)Are you the one who would build Me a house to inhabit? 6 For (G)I have not inhabited a house since the day I brought up the sons of Israel from Egypt, even to this day; but I have been going about (H)in a tent, even in a [a]tabernacle. 7 (I)Wherever I have gone about with all the sons of Israel, did I speak a word with one of the tribes of Israel, (J)which I commanded to shepherd My people Israel, saying, ‘Why have you not built Me a house of cedar?’”’
David’s House Will Be Established Forever
8 So now, thus you shall say to My servant David, ‘Thus says Yahweh of hosts, “(K)I Myself took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, (L)to be ruler over My people Israel. 9 (M)And I have been with you wherever you have gone and (N)have cut off all your enemies from before you; and I will make you a great name, like the name of the great men who are on the earth. 10 And I will appoint a place for My people Israel and (O)will plant them, that they may dwell in their own place and not be disturbed again; (P)and the [b]unrighteous will not afflict them any more as formerly, 11 even (Q)from the day that I commanded judges to be over My people Israel; and (R)I will give you rest from all your enemies. Yahweh also declares to you that (S)Yahweh will make a house for you. 12 (T)When your days are fulfilled and you (U)lie down with your fathers, (V)I will raise up one of your seed after you, who will come forth from [c]your own body, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 (W)He shall build a house for My name, and (X)I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. 14 (Y)I will be a father to him and he will be a son to Me; (Z)when he commits iniquity, I will reprove him with the rod of men and the strikes from the sons of men, 15 but My lovingkindness shall not be removed from him, (AA)as I removed it from Saul, whom I removed from before you. 16 (AB)And your house and your kingdom shall [d]endure before [e]Me forever; your throne shall be established forever.”’” 17 According to all these words and according to all this vision, so Nathan spoke to David.
David Magnifies Yahweh’s Name
18 Then David the king went in and sat before Yahweh, and he said, “(AC)Who am I, O Lord Yahweh, and what is my house, that You have brought me this far? 19 And yet this was a small thing in Your eyes, O Lord Yahweh, (AD)for You have spoken also of the house of Your slave concerning the distant future. And (AE)this is the law of man, O Lord Yahweh. 20 And again what more can David say to You? And (AF)You know Your slave, O Lord Yahweh! 21 (AG)For the sake of Your word, and according to Your own heart, You have done all this greatness to let Your slave know. 22 For this reason (AH)You are great, O Lord Yahweh; for (AI)there is none like You, and there is no God besides You, (AJ)according to all that we have heard with our ears. 23 And (AK)what one nation on the earth is like Your people Israel, whom God went to redeem for Himself as a people and to make a name for Himself, and (AL)to do a great thing for You and awesome things for Your land, before (AM)Your people whom (AN)You have redeemed for Yourself from Egypt, from nations and their gods? 24 Yet (AO)You have established for Yourself Your people Israel as Your own people forever, and (AP)You, O Yahweh, have become their God. 25 So now, O Yahweh God, the word that You have spoken concerning Your slave and concerning his house, establish it forever, and do as You have spoken, 26 (AQ)that Your name may be magnified forever, by saying, ‘Yahweh of hosts is God over Israel’; and the house of Your [f]servant David shall be established before You. 27 For You, O Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel, have revealed in the hearing of Your slave, saying, ‘(AR)I will build you a house’; therefore Your slave has found courage in his heart to pray this prayer to You. 28 So now, O Lord Yahweh, You are God, and (AS)Your words are truth, and You have [g]promised this good thing to Your slave. 29 So now, be pleased and bless the house of Your slave, that it may be forever before You. For You, O Lord Yahweh, have spoken; and (AT)with Your blessing may the house of Your slave be blessed forever.”
David Strikes Down Nations
8 (AU)Now it happened afterwards, that David struck the Philistines and subdued them; and David took [h]control of the chief city from the hand of the Philistines.
2 (AV)He also struck (AW)Moab, and measured them with the line, making them lie down on the ground; and he measured two lines to put to death and one full line to keep alive. And (AX)the Moabites became servants to David, (AY)bringing tribute.
3 Then David struck (AZ)Hadadezer, the son of Rehob king of Zobah, as (BA)he went to restore his [i]power at the [j]River. 4 And David captured from him 1,700 horsemen and 20,000 foot soldiers; and David (BB)hamstrung all the chariot horses, but left enough of them for 100 chariots. 5 Then (BC)the Arameans of Damascus came to help Hadadezer, king of Zobah. And David struck down 22,000 Arameans. 6 Then David placed garrisons among the Arameans of Damascus; and (BD)the Arameans became servants to David, bringing tribute. And (BE)Yahweh granted salvation to David wherever he went. 7 And David took the small shields of gold which were [k]carried by the servants of Hadadezer and brought them to Jerusalem. 8 Also from [l]Betah and from (BF)Berothai, cities of Hadadezer, King David took a very large amount of bronze.
9 Then Toi king of (BG)Hamath heard that David had struck down all the military force of Hadadezer, 10 so Toi sent [m]Joram his son to King David to [n]greet him and to bless him, because he had fought against Hadadezer and struck him down; for Hadadezer [o]had been at war with Toi. And in [p]Joram’s hand were articles of silver, of gold, and of bronze. 11 King David also (BH)set these apart as holy to Yahweh, with the silver and the gold that he had set apart as holy from all the nations which he had subdued: 12 from [q]Aram, (BI)Moab, (BJ)the sons of Ammon, (BK)the Philistines, (BL)Amalek, and from the spoil of Hadadezer, son of Rehob, king of Zobah.
13 So (BM)David made a name for himself when he returned from striking down 18,000 [r]Arameans in (BN)the Valley of Salt. 14 Then he placed garrisons in Edom. In all Edom he placed garrisons, and (BO)all the Edomites became servants to David. And (BP)Yahweh granted salvation to David wherever he went.
15 So David reigned over all Israel; and David was doing justice and righteousness for all his people. 16 (BQ)Now Joab the son of Zeruiah was over the army, and (BR)Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was (BS)recorder; 17 (BT)and Zadok the son of Ahitub and Ahimelech the son of Abiathar were (BU)priests, and Seraiah was (BV)scribe; 18 (BW)and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada [s]was over the (BX)Cherethites and the Pelethites; and the sons of David were [t](BY)priests.
David’s Lovingkindness to Mephibosheth
9 Then David said, “Is there yet [u]anyone left of the house of Saul, (BZ)that I may show him lovingkindness for Jonathan’s sake?” 2 Now there was a servant of the house of Saul whose name was Ziba, and they called him to David; and the king said to him, “Are you (CA)Ziba?” And he said, “I am your servant.” 3 And the king said, “Is there not yet anyone of the house of Saul to whom I may show the (CB)lovingkindness of God?” And Ziba said to the king, “(CC)There is still a son of Jonathan who is crippled in both feet.” 4 So the king said to him, “Where is he?” And Ziba said to the king, “Behold, he is (CD)in the house of Machir the son of Ammiel in Lo-debar.” 5 Then King David sent and took him from the house of Machir the son of Ammiel, from Lo-debar. 6 (CE)So Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan the son of Saul, came to David and (CF)fell on his face and prostrated himself. And David said, “Mephibosheth.” And he said, “Here is your servant!” 7 And David said to him, “Do not fear, for (CG)I will surely show lovingkindness to you for the sake of your father Jonathan, and (CH)will restore to you all the [v]land of your [w]grandfather Saul; and (CI)you shall [x]eat at my table continually.” 8 So he prostrated himself and said, “What is your servant, that you should regard (CJ)a dead dog like me?”
9 Then the king called Saul’s young man Ziba and said to him, “(CK)All that belonged to Saul and to all his house I have given to your master’s [y]grandson. 10 And you and your sons and your servants shall cultivate the land for him, and you shall bring in the produce so that your master’s grandson may have food and eat of it; nevertheless (CL)Mephibosheth your master’s grandson (CM)shall [z]eat at my table continually.” Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants. 11 Then Ziba said to the king, “According (CN)to all that my lord the king commands his servant so your servant will do.” So Mephibosheth ate at [aa]David’s table as one of the king’s sons. 12 Now Mephibosheth had a young son whose name was Mica. And all who lived in the house of Ziba were servants to Mephibosheth. 13 So Mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem, for (CO)he ate at the king’s table continually. Now (CP)he was lame in both feet.
The Ammonites Dishonor David’s Men
10 (CQ)Now it happened afterwards, that (CR)the king of the sons of Ammon died, and Hanun his son became king in his place. 2 So David said, “I will show lovingkindness to Hanun the son of (CS)Nahash, just as his father showed lovingkindness to me.” So David sent to comfort him concerning his father by the hand of his servants. And David’s servants came to the land of the sons of Ammon. 3 But the princes of the sons of Ammon said to Hanun their lord, “In your eyes, is David honoring your father because he has sent comforters to you? (CT)Has David not sent his servants to you in order to search the city, to spy it out and overthrow it?” 4 So Hanun took David’s servants and (CU)shaved off half of their beards, and (CV)cut off their garments in the middle as far as their hips, and sent them away. 5 Then they told it to David. And he sent to meet them, for the men were greatly dishonored. And the king said, “[ab]Stay at Jericho until your beards grow, and then return.”
6 Then the sons of Ammon saw that (CW)they had become odious to David. So the sons of Ammon sent and (CX)hired the Arameans of (CY)Beth-rehob and the (CZ)Arameans of Zobah, 20,000 foot soldiers, and the king of (DA)Maacah with 1,000 men, and the men of Tob with 12,000 men. 7 Then David heard of it and sent Joab and all the army, the mighty men. 8 And the sons of Ammon came out and arranged themselves for battle (DB)at the entrance of the gate of the city. But the Arameans of Zobah and of Rehob and the men of (DC)Tob and Maacah were by themselves in the field.
David Defeats Ammon and Aram
9 Then Joab saw that [ac]the battle was set against him from the front and from the rear. So he chose from all the choice men of Israel, and they arranged themselves to meet the Arameans. 10 But the remainder of the people he put in the hand of Abishai his brother; and he arranged them to meet the sons of Ammon. 11 And he said, “If the Arameans are too strong for me, then you shall save me, but if the sons of Ammon are too strong for you, then I will come to save you. 12 (DD)Be strong, and let us show strength for the sake of our people and for the cities of our God; and (DE)may Yahweh do what is good in His sight.” 13 So Joab and the people who were with him drew near for the battle against the Arameans, and (DF)they fled before him. 14 Now the sons of Ammon saw that the Arameans fled. So they also fled before Abishai and came into the city. (DG)Then Joab returned from fighting against the sons of Ammon and came to Jerusalem.
15 Then the Arameans saw that they had been [ad]defeated by Israel. So they gathered themselves together. 16 (DH)And Hadadezer sent and brought out the Arameans who were beyond the [ae]River, and they came to Helam; and (DI)Shobach the commander of the army of Hadadezer [af]led them. 17 And it was told to David, so he gathered all Israel together and crossed the Jordan, and came to Helam. And the Arameans arranged themselves to meet David and fought against him. 18 But the Arameans fled before Israel, and David killed of the Arameans (DJ)700 charioteers and 40,000 horsemen and struck down Shobach the commander of their army, and he died there. 19 Then all the kings, the servants of Hadadezer, saw that they were [ag]defeated by Israel. So (DK)they made peace with Israel and served them. And the Arameans were afraid to save the sons of Ammon anymore.
